ISRO’s Latest Video On Rover Roaming On Moon Has A Chandamama Reference

ISRO’s Latest Video On Rover Roaming On Moon Has A Chandamama Reference

Pragyan rover and Vikram lander were carried to the moon by the Chandrayaan-3 module.

New Delhi:

India’s space agency has shared a video of the Pragyan rover being rotated on the Moon’s surface – remotely from the command centre in Bengaluru – in search of a route that avoids craters and rocks on the lunar surface. The rover and Vikram, the lander that carried Pragyan to the Moon, are racing to finish experiments before a lunar night (which lasts 14 Earth days) sets next week.

“The rover was rotated in search of a safe route. The rotation was captured by a Lander Imager Camera,” the Indian Space Research Organisation posted on X (formerly Twitter). “It feels as though a child is playfully frolicking in the yards of Chandamama, while the mother watches affectionately…”

This latest update from the Moon comes a day after Pragyan shared an image of Vikram – the first using its NavCam, or navigation camera and the first since it was deployed. All visuals shared before were taken by the lander; happy ISRO scientists posted the “image of the mission” on X.

Pragyan’s “Moon Walk” Video

On Monday too ISRO shared a “re-route” update from the Moon, noting Pragyan had been sent on a different, and safer, path, after coming face-to-face with a four-meter diameter crater.

Pragyan Confirms Presence Of Sulphur Near Moon’s South Pole

One of the instruments on the rover – the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope – has confirmed the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface near south pole, ISRO said Tuesday, adding that aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon and oxygen had also detected.

ISRO said in-situ measurements revealed, “unambiguously”, the presence of sulphur – something not feasible using instruments onboard orbiters – and that they were now hunting for hydrogen.

India Makes Space History

The nation took a giant leap on August 23 after Chandrayaan-3’s module – Vikram – touched down; India became only the fourth country – after the United States, China, and Russia – to soft land on the moon’s surface – and the first to go as close as it did to the Moon’s South Pole.

India’s next big space mission is to launch on Saturday – Aditya L1 – which will orbit the Sun and observe solar activities and their effects on space weather in real time.

Rajasthan BJP’s Mass Outreach Programme Features Chandrayaan-3 Success

Rajasthan BJP’s Mass Outreach Programme Features Chandrayaan-3 Success

The event highlighted India’s successful third Moon Mission –Chandrayaan-3

Jaipur:

Preparing to take on the Congress in the Rajasthan Assembly elections, the opposition BJP on Wednesday organised an event in Chittorgarh. The event “Nav Matdata Sangam” highlighted India’s successful third Moon Mission –Chandrayaan-3 with a video showing a replica of the Chandrayaan-3 rover Pragyan lifting from the ground to the sky.

The event started from Mewar region and was organised under the leadership of CP Joshi, the Chittorgarh MP, who is also the state BJP chief. The video shows huge crowd waving the Tricolour, cheering for the Chandrayaan-3 with Mr Joshi addressing a public gathering as Saare Jahaan se Acha plays in the background.

The attempt by the BJP to reach out to the masses ahead of the Assembly elections is significant as it plans to ouster the Ashok Gehlot government. Assembly elections in Rajasthan are slated to be held later this year.

India created history on August 23 by becoming the first country to achieve a soft landing near the south pole of the Moon. The successful conduct of what was the maiden lunar landing mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also put India in an elite club of nations featuring the US, Russia and China.

Meanwhile, the Congress in Rajasthan has promised free electricity up to 100 units and fixed rate for the next 100 units. Earlier, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had promised huge subsidies on cooking gas.

Ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections, the Congress announced a slew of promises –monthly free allowances, free 200 units of electricity and 10 kilograms of rice– which helped the grand old party script history in the southern state.

BJP, which is still smarting over its defeat, is gleeful over the ruling party’s predicament. BJP MP Pratap Sinha has urged people not to pay electricity bills from June 1 if their consumption is below 200 units.

“Don’t Do Drama”: Fans Angry As India vs Pakistan ICC World Cup 2023 Pre-sale Tickets Get Sold Out In An Hour | Cricket News

“Don’t Do Drama”: Fans Angry As India vs Pakistan ICC World Cup 2023 Pre-sale Tickets Get Sold Out In An Hour | Cricket News

The pre-sale window for the first lot of tickets for the high-voltage ICC World Cup 2023 match between Indian cricket team and Pakistan saw huge interest from fans on Tuesday. The ICC’s ticketing partner ‘Book My Show’ opened its exclusive pre-sale window for the October 14  clash in Ahmedabad, but it was sold out within an hour. There will be another round of general sale for the India-Pakistan match on September 3, there is a chance that then also it would be a complete sell-out within hours, like it happened on Tuesday for all the Mastercard holders.

It couldn’t be confirmed as to how many tickets were put online during the pre-sale window for all India matches and the warm-up games but news agency PTI has learnt that, after the sale opened at 6 pm IST, within an hour, all tickets on the day were exhausted. The ‘Book My Show’ website put a ‘Sold Out’ caption on the Pakistan game, which wasn’t the case for the other eight India games.

“Today it was only for those who owned a Mastercard (credit or debit, India and international). Only two tickets per person was allotted and naturally, the tickets put on pre-sale were bought by fans within an hour. However it is expected that another round will happen on September 3. The best part is that Narendra Modi Stadium has 132,000 capacity, so reasonable number of tickets could be expected to be put on sale on September 3,” a BCCI source told PTI.

However, unable to get tickets, some fans were disappointed.

The ICC is allowing only two tickets to be booked per person for all India games along with semi-final and final while for non-India games, four tickets per person could be booked.

The Benefits Of A Car Running 100% On Ethanol | Explained

The Benefits Of A Car Running 100% On Ethanol | Explained

Nitin Gadkari has been at the forefront of the campaign to shift to alternative fuel options. (File)

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari is set to unveil a 100 per cent ethanol fuel variant of Toyota Innova MPV on Tuesday.

Confirming the development at a media conclave last week, Mr Gadkari had said, “On August 29, I am going to launch the popular (Toyota) Innova car on 100 per cent ethanol.” Ethanol comes from plants– indicated by E100. Toyota, in a statement, said that the Ethanol-powered Innova will be the world’s first BS-VI (Stage-II) electrified flex fuel vehicle.

Mt Gadkari has been at the forefront of the campaign to shift to alternative fuel options. Last year, the minister launched the Toyota Mirai EV, which runs purely on hydrogen-generated electricity. Speaking at the event, Mr Gadkari said that he was first intrigued by biofuels way back in 2004 when petrol prices started spiking. He visited Brazil to understand how a shift to biofuels could change the game.

What Biofuel Shift Means For India?

India depends on oil imports to meet fuel needs, causing great stress on the state coffers. According to Mr Gadkari, the current import bill for petroleum is around Rs 16 lakh crore. With a shift to biofuel options such as ethanol, derived from plant-based sources like sugarcane, the oil import bills could be cut down, making the country more self-reliant to meet its fuel needs.

“If we want to become atmanirbhar (self-reliant) we have to bring this oil import to zero. At present, it is ₹16 lakh crore. This is a big loss to the economy. India needs to take more sustainable measures as pollution is a big problem in the country,” Mr Gadkari was quoted as saying by Mint.

How Does It Change the Game?

The use of biofuels will also help in curbing pollution. To push bio-fuel consumption, India, last year, rolled out petrol mixed with 20 per cent ethanol. The plan is to double the quantity of ethanol by 2025. The use of 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol is estimated to cut carbon monoxide emission by 50 per cent in two-wheelers and about 30 per cent in four-wheelers compared to neat petrol.

China Drops COVID-19 Test Requirements For Travellers

China Drops COVID-19 Test Requirements For Travellers

Air travel to and from the country essentially dried up during Covid. (Representational)

New Delhi:

Travellers to China will no longer be required to take COVID-19 tests starting Wednesday, the country’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday. The move is seen as a milestone in the country’s efforts to reopen to the rest of the world after a nearly three-year isolation due to the pandemic.

A notice on the website of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China said the travellers will also no longer be required to declare the negative test results while exiting and entering the country.

In January, the country ended the quarantine requirements for its own citizens travelling from abroad and gradually expanded the list of countries its citizens can travel to.

China also lifted a ban on group tours to overseas destinations including the US, Australia, the UK, South Korea and Japan, easing the door open for outbound travel.

China decided last December to end the three-year zero-COVID policy, which included mass-testing and stringent and persistent quarantine lockdowns. The abrupt decision led a massive surge in hospitalisations and deaths that health experts say were largely unreported by the government.

A US study showed that China’s move to dismantle its strict COVID-19 regime, which unleashed the virus onto its 1.4 billion residents, could have led to nearly 2 million excess deaths in the following two months.

Air travel to and from the country essentially dried up during Covid, which emerged in early 2020 and resulted in the world’s strictest border controls.

The study said the number of excess deaths far exceeded official Chinese government estimates in January that 60,000 people with COVID-19 had died in hospital since the zero-COVID policy was abandoned a month earlier.

Neeraj Chopra: With World Championship Gold, India’s Javelin Great Completes A Full Circle At Just 25 | Athletics News

Neeraj Chopra: With World Championship Gold, India’s Javelin Great Completes A Full Circle At Just 25 | Athletics News

Twenty five is when dreams start to take wings for most. For some super-special individuals, like Neeraj Chopra, by that age you conquer all that is out there to be conquered. With his first World Athletics Championship gold in javelin throw that he won with an attempt of 88.17m at the 2023 edition late on Sunday night in Budapest, Hungary, the Haryana-born athlete has reached a stupendous height that will be hard to match for generations to come. With his first World Championship gold medal, which was the only major missing piece of metal in his already envious trophy cabinet, Chopra has completed a full circle.

He is the reigning Olympic champion – the first Indian sportsperson to win a gold medal at the Games in athletics (field events). Now, Chopra is the first from the country to win a gold medal at World Athletics Championship. Till now, the silver medal that he won in 2022 was India’s best return from the World Athletics Championships after Anju Bobby George’s bronze medal in the women’s long jump back in 2003 at Paris.

Chopra has an Asian Games gold medal and a Commonwealth Games gold medal. He is a Diamond League champion too. Add to it, the U20 World Championship gold medal that he won in 2016. Neeraj is truly the golden boy of Indian sport.

Chopra is now the second Indian, after Abhinav Bindra, to simultaneously hold the Olympics and World Championships title. Bindra won the World Championships title when he was 23, and the Olympics gold at 25.

The Rise

To think that Chopra took up javelin almost by chance is another fascinating story. In 2011, a then 14-year-old Chopra weighed 85kg. He was obese and his family somehow convinced his to join a gym. From his village in Khandra,  Haryana, he used to go to Panipat, situated 17km away, for gym training. On his way, he would go to Shivaji Stadium, where he first threw up javelin upon the insistence of his senior Jaiveer, a national-level javelin thrower. He had found his calling and there was no looking back.

By 2015, he had breached the hallowed 80m mark. By 2016, he had set a world record at the Under-20 level. In 2017, he won the Asian Championships gold medal. In 2018, he won gold medals at the Asian Games as well as the Commonwealth Games.

The Injury

Just when he was primed to be India’s favourite contender for a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, he hit a roadblock. Ahead of the 2019 World Championships, he suffered a major elbow problem due to bone spurs in his throwing arm. He had to undergo an intense two-hour surgery and then underwent a four-month rehabilitation. He ultimately came back, and came back in style.

The Comeback

In the summer of 2021, at his maiden Olympics, with a throw of 87.58 m, he became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Games in athletics (field events).

Therein lies the greatness of Chopra. Though from the outside, it might seem that he is that wonder-boy who has the Midas touch, he has had his share of struggles. And every time, he was pinned down he came back stronger and he threw the javelin to a greater distance.

After the Olympics, he went to break his own national record twice in a space of just over two weeks in 2022. His current record is 89.94m. Last year, he won the Diamond League but missed the World Championship gold. He came very close to clinching that gold in 2022 with a throw of 88.13 m. However, he fell short of Grenada javelin thrower Anderson Peters’ monstrous 90.54 m throw. This time he led the field in style though he started with a false throw. However, an attempt of 88.17m was enough for him to take the gold ahead of Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem (87.82m).

And, with age on his side, he is in no mood to stop!
