“Calling Lawyers Of World”: Ladakh Innovator On Being Asked To Sign Bond

“Calling Lawyers Of World”: Ladakh Innovator On Being Asked To Sign Bond

Ladakh’s Sonam Wangchuk is on a five-day fast

New Delhi/Leh:

Ladakh’s top environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk has alleged the Union Territory’s administration wants to silence him as he sits on a long fast in protest against destruction of the region’s ecology and unsustainable development.

On Day 3 of his five-day fast to raise awareness about severe environmental exploitation of the region, Mr Wangchuk told NDTV the Ladakh administration is trying to force his hand into signing a bond to prevent him from spreading his message and reaching out to people.

He also tweeted a copy of what he claimed was the bond that he has been asked to sign to ensure he wouldn’t make any statement or participate at public meetings for a month.

“I am under house arrest. In fact quite worse than that. If you’re under house arrest, you know the rules clearly and you may even explore legal ways to counter it. But right now I am being kept at our institute and my movement is restricted,” Mr Wangchuk, wrapped in a blanket amidst snow-capped mountains, told NDTV in a video statement.

He founded the institute, Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, or SECMOL, on whose grounds he has been fasting. Mr Wangchuk had planned his fast at Khardung La Pass, where the temperature could fall to minus 40 degree Celsius. He alleged the administration is trying to stop him from reaching Khardung La Pass.

“Calling lawyers of the world. The Ladakh Union Territory administration wants me to sign this bond even when only fasts and prayers are happening. Please advise. How right is it? Should I silence myself? I don’t mind arrest at all,” Mr Wangchuk tweeted, tagging Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr Wangchuk received the Magsaysay Award in 2018. His work had inspired the fictional character, Phunsukh Wangdu, played by actor Aamir Khan in the 2009 film “3 Idiots”.

He has said that without preventive steps, unsustainable industries, tourism and commerce will continue to mushroom in Ladakh and finish the region eventually.

“Recent studies from Kashmir University and other research organisations have concluded that glaciers in Leh-Ladakh will finish nearly to their two-thirds if they are not properly taken care of. A study by Kashmir University has found that the glaciers surrounded by highways and human activities are melting at a comparatively faster rate,” Mr Wangchuk said.

He has also asked the government to include the region in the 6th schedule of the Constitution, which allows administration of some tribal areas as autonomous entities.

Watch: Four College Students Arrested For Rash Driving In Noida

Delhi-registered SUV was being driven rashly near the Dalit Prerna Sthal.

Noida:

Police arrested four college students and issued a challan of Rs 25,500 for violating traffic norms on Friday, a day after videos of a car being driven rashly in Noida was widely circulated on social media, officials said.

The police also impounded the black-colour Mahindra Scorpio and initiated legal proceedings for cancellation of the vehicle’s registration as well as the driving license of the man who was driving the vehicle, they said.

A police spokesperson said the Delhi-registered SUV was being driven rashly near the Dalit Prerna Sthal which falls under the Phase 1 police station area on Thursday.

The police action came after purported videos of the rash driving with several other vehicles close-by went viral on social media on Thursday.

“The four accused involved in the episode have been arrested. They have been identified as Anshul, Tushar, Himanshu and Harjeet – all aged between 20 and 22,” the police spokesperson said.

While the driver has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 279 (rash driving), the challan of Rs 25,500 against the four accused has been issued under CrPC section 151, according to the police.

“The Scorpio has been impounded. A report has been sent to the regional transport officer (RTO) to initiate proceedings for cancellation of the car’s registration as well as the driver’s driving license,” the spokesperson said.

The challan has been sent to the local court and further legal proceedings are underway, the police added.

The action on rash driving comes at a time when the UP Police is holding a special month-long campaign for road safety awareness.

UP witnessed thousands of road crashes and fatalities over the years. In 2022, Gautam Buddh Nagar district recorded over 400 road crash deaths, according to official figures.

“Hard Work Or Smart Work,” Student Asked PM. His Reply

“Hard Work Or Smart Work,” Student Asked PM. His Reply

Pariksha Pe Charcha 2023: PM also used a cricket analogy to highlight the importance of focus.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today interacted with students, parents and teachers during his annual ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha‘. During the interaction, he advised parents against putting undue pressure on children over marks and also gave tips to students on keeping a balance between hard work and smart work.

“I urge the parents not to pressurise your children. But at the same time, students should also not underestimate their capabilities, said the Prime Minister.

“It is very natural for family members to have a lot of expectations and there is nothing wrong in that, but if the family members are having these expectations due to social status then it is a matter of concern,” he said.

During the discussion, a student asked PM Modi, “What is more important? Smart work or hard work?”

“Some people hardly work smart and some people smartly work hard,” the Prime Minister quipped. “We should learn the nuances of these aspects and should work accordingly to achieve the desired results,” he said.

PM Modi guided students on how to distinguish between hard work and smart work by citing ‘The Thirsty Crow’ story.

Pariksha Pe Charchais an annual interaction the Prime Minister has with students about issues like stress and studies related to exams.

He also used a cricket analogy to highlight the importance of focus.

“Like in cricket, a batter focuses on the ball thrown to him ignoring the shouts of fours and sixes from the crowd, students should also concentrate on their work,” said PM Modi. “Do not be suppressed by pressures. Stay focused,” he added.

The Prime Minister spoke about the importance of time-management and advised the students to learn the skill from their mothers. “Have you ever observed your mother’s time management skills? A mother never feels burdened by the immense work she does. If you observe your mother, then you will understand how to manage your time well,” PM Modi told students.

A few students also asked him how he deals with criticism by opposition and media. To that, PM Modi had a witty response. “This is an out of syllabus question,” he said. He further said that in a democracy, “criticism is like purification”. “For a prosperous democracy, criticism is vital,” PM Modi added.

The sixth edition of the interaction was held at the Talkatora Indoor stadium in New Delhi.

Over 38 lakh students registered this year for participation in Pariksha Pe Charcha, out of which more than 16 lakh are from state boards.

PM Modi also spoke strongly against the use of unfair practices in exams.

“Cheating may help someone in an exam or two but not in life in the long run, he said. Never take the shortcut. Hardwork of students will always help them advance in life,” he said.

He added students should at times analyse the pressure applied on them to see if they are underestimating their strengths.

Indian-Origin Professor To Lead “Best And Brightest” Scientists In US’s Texas

Indian-Origin Professor To Lead “Best And Brightest” Scientists In US’s Texas

Dr Ganesh Thakur, currently vice president of TAMEST, will be named the president in 2025

Houston:

Ganesh Thakur, an Indian-origin professor in the US, has been appointed as the vice president of the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST), an organisation that brings the state’s top scientists and researchers to advance research, innovation and business in Texas.

The TAMEST board of directors on Tuesday appointed Dr Thakur, a Distinguished Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston (UH), vice president alongside Brendan Lee, who will serve as the president.

Originally from Jharkhand, Dr Thakur is the first UH faculty member to lead TAMEST.

During his two-year term as vice president, he will help coordinate and guide the board of directors with strategic planning, programmes and communication.

He will eventually be named the president of the organisation in 2025.

“Texas is home to some of the most brilliant minds in the world, and I’m honoured and excited by this opportunity to strengthen collaboration and advance innovation across the state in fields critical to our continued growth and development,” said Dr Thakur, who has been a member of the organisation since 2016, most recently serving as treasurer.

“TAMEST is a scientific and biomedical intellectual engine for the state, and I am passionate about its mission to benefit public good and business,” he added.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors, Dr Thakur is a globally recognised pioneer in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). His patent on forecasting the performance of water injection and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) using a hybrid analytical-empirical methodology provided a much faster approach that served as an alternative to more time-consuming reservoir simulation.

In a USD 5 million partnership with Oil India Limited, Dr Thakur’s team helped capture carbon dioxide from petrochemical plants to boost oil recovery in several fields in Assam. The project is targeted to help reduce India’s carbon footprint and increase its ability to fulfil its energy needs.

“Dr Thakur’s leadership, passion and cutting-edge research have been instrumental in positioning the University as a strategic partner to the energy industry,” said Ramanan Krishnamoorti, UH vice president of energy and innovation.

“His extensive knowledge and expertise will be of great benefit to TAMEST and the state of Texas. I sincerely congratulate him on this well-deserved appointment,” he added.

“We fully support Dr Thakur’s involvement in this key leadership position which is critical to advancing innovation across our state. He has an incredible passion for teaching and collaboration which will be a great asset to the TAMEST,” said Joseph W. Tedesco, Elizabeth D. Rockwell Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering.

Dr Thakur joined UH in 2016 with a grant from the Texas Governor’s University Research Initiative (GURI). He joined as director of UH Energy Industry Partnerships after almost four decades working in the industry at Chevron, where he served in several leadership roles, including vice president of reservoir management.

He earned his doctorate in petroleum and natural gas engineering (PNGE) from Pennsylvania State University in 1973, after earning his master’s degrees in mathematics and PNGE there. He also has an MBA from Houston Baptist University and received his bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in India.

TAMEST membership includes all Texas-based members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, the state’s nine Nobel laureates and 18 member institutions, including the University of Houston. It brings together the state’s “best and brightest” scientists and researchers to foster collaboration and advance research, innovation and business in Texas, according to the TAMEST website.
