Viral Video Shows Woman Thrashing Mother-In-Law In Gwalior, Dragging Her By Hair

Bhopal:

A video of a woman thrashing her mother-in-law in Madhya Pradesh has gone viral with her husband now fearing for his and his mother’s life in light of the grisly Meerut murder. The elderly woman is seen being dragged away by her daughter-in-law at their Gwalior home as she tried to save her son from being thrashed by his in-laws.

Vishal Batra, who runs a car spare shop, and his mother Sarla Batra, 70, have complained to the police that their in-laws barged into their house and attacked them over what they claimed was a “small issue”. Mr Batra later told reporters that his wife had been insisting on sending his mother to the old-age home – which he had refused.

Ms Batra claimed her daughter-in-law called her father Surendra Kohli on April 1 afternoon after which he reached their house in Adarsh Colony with his son Nanak Kohli and some other men. CCTV video showed Vishal Batra inside his house when his father-in-law entered the house and abruptly slapped him. He tried to hit back, but some others barged inside and started beating him.

Neelika, who was on the first floor, came downstairs and dragged away her mother-in-law, who was seen trying to save her son. The video showed her dragging the elderly woman by her hair and landing punches on her arms.

Their minor son – visibly scared – was also present during the assault.

Another video showed Mr Batra being assaulted on the streets and his son trying to move his mother away. Sarla Batra, who now has a swollen eye, said his son’s in-laws dragged him outside and the assault continued.

The neighbours then intervened and the matter moved to the police station.

“I am being harassed a lot. I can’t take it anymore. They called goons, and her father and brother thrashed us. How can someone beat a woman? Now they are threatening to kill us. We are scared and staying away from home,” she later told NDTV.

Mr Batra alleged his brother-in-law threatened him at the police station that he would kill him and his mother. And that his in-laws also took over his house – reportedly valued in crores – and locked it, leaving them stranded outside. He alleged that his wife has also threatened to file false charges against him and his mother.

“I am afraid that like the Meerut incident, my wife can kill me and my old mother,” he told reporters, pointing to the grisly murder in which a woman and her lover murdered her husband, chopped his body, and concealed it in a drum.

Neelika and her father are yet to make a public comment on the matter.

Mr Batra also claimed the police were initially reluctant to help but filed an FIR later. On Friday, he went to the Superintendent of Police’s office after which Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vishal Batra assured him of strict action.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s remarks were interrupted by a pro-Palestinian protesting employee during the technology company’s 50th anniversary celebration on Friday over the firm’s ties with Israel.

“You are a war profiteer. Stop using AI for genocide,” Microsoft employee Ibtihal Aboussad said at the event in Redmond, Washington, while interrupting Mr Suleyman who was talking about the company’s artificial intelligence assistant product.

Mr Suleyman responded by saying: “I hear your protest, thank you.” The protesting employee was then escorted away.

An investigation by The Associated Press revealed earlier this year that AI models from Microsoft and OpenAI were used as part of an Israeli military program to select bombing targets during its wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

Various other firms and educational institutions have also faced protests over their ties with Israel as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza from Israel’s military assault has mounted.

The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered in October 2023, when Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel’s subsequent assault on Hamas-governed Gaza has killed over 50,000 Palestinians, according to Gazan health officials, while also triggering accusations of genocide and war crimes that Israel denies. The assault has internally displaced nearly Gaza’s entire 2.3 million population and caused a hunger crisis.

The Verge tech news website quoted an email that Aboussad, the protesting employee, sent to other Microsoft employees justifying her protest.

Microsoft said it provided many avenues for all voices to be heard in a way that does not cause business interruption.

Aboussad was cited by AP to be saying that she and another protesting employee lost access to their work accounts after the protest.

London’s Metropolitan Police on Friday said it had charged comedian and actor Russell Brand with rape and a number of other sexual offences.

Russell Brand, who became known internationally as the former husband of pop star Katy Perry after forging a career as a stand-up comedian with risque routines, was also charged with one count each of rape, indecent assault, and oral rape as well as two counts of sexual assault, the force said.

Srinagar:

The initial bonhomie between the Omar Abdullah government and the Centre in Jammu and Kashmir appears to be fizzling out. It has been replaced by simmering tension over the transfer of 48 Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service officers by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The Chief Minister has called an emergency meeting of his party legislators and allies on Friday to decide the future course of action. Sources say the elected government feels that order has disrespected the mandate of people and trampled upon the authority of the elected government in the Union Territory.

“It can’t be business as usual. We wanted cordial relation with Raj Bhavan and the Centre, but they have chosen to disrespect the mandate. It is unacceptable” said a senior leader of the National Conference.

The conflict has erupted days before the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Mr Shah is arriving in the Union Territory on Sunday for a three-day visit to review the security situation in view of a spike in terrorist activities in the Jammu region.

The Chief Minister has reportedly shot off a letter to Mr Shah, expressing his anguish over the transfer orders, which he believes is the domain of elected government under the J&K Reorganization Act of 2019.

Besides control over law and order, the Act authorises the Lieutenant Governor to transfer IAS officers. All other departments, including transfer of JKAS officers, comes under jurisdiction of elected government.

Sources said being in charge of law and order, the Lieutenant Governor issued the order of transfer and posting of Revenue officers on Tuesday as they also perform the duties of the magistrate.

Since the formation of the elected government in October, there has been friction between LG and the government due to the overlapping control and absence of clear demarcation of powers. However, it was never allowed to escalate as Mr Abdullah maintained a cordial relationship with the Centre.

The impact of dual control on the functioning of government is visible: Jammu and Kashmir has been without an Advocate General for the last six months.

Sources say the legislative party meeting will discuss the impact of transfer order which they believe is aimed at further weakening the elected government.

There is also unease in the government over the delay in Centre’s  response on restoration of statehood.

After the government formation last year, Mr Abdullah was reportedly assured by the Centre that the process of restoration of statehood will begin soon after the assembly elections in Maharashtra are over in December.  

But till date, the Centre has not given any timeline for it or started any consultation with the elected government.

The Centre has also not responded to J&K assembly’s resolution on special status and the demand for initiating dialogue with the elected representatives.

“We will discuss all these issues in the meeting tomorrow,” said a leader of the National Conference.

The commerce ministry is analysing the impact of 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs or import duties imposed by the US on India, a senior government official said on Thursday.

According to the official, the universal 10 per cent tariffs will come into effect on all imports into the US from April 5 and the remaining 16 per cent from April 10.

“The ministry is analysing the impact of the announced tariffs,” the official said, adding there is a provision that if a country would address the concerns of the US, the Trump administration can consider reducing the duties against that nation.

India is already negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with the US. The two countries are aiming to finalise the first phase of the pact by fall (September-October) of this year.

“It is a mixed bag and not a setback for India,” the official said.

The US President listed the high tariffs charged by India on American products as he announced reciprocal tariffs on countries across the board, declaring a 26 per cent “discounted” reciprocal tariff on India.

“This is Liberation Day, a long-awaited moment. 2nd April 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to make America wealthy again. We are going to make it wealthy, good, and wealthy,” Trump said on Wednesday in remarks from the Rose Garden at the White House as he announced the closely watched reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose levies on American goods.

As he announced the tariffs, he held up a chart that showed the tariffs that countries such as India, China, the UK, and the European Union charge, along with the reciprocal tariffs that these countries will now have to pay.

The chart indicated that India charged 52 per cent tariffs, including currency manipulation and trade barriers, and America would now charge India a discounted reciprocal tariff of 26 per cent.

“India, very, very tough. Very, very tough. The prime minister just left. He’s a great friend of mine, but I said, you’re a friend of mine, but you’re not treating us right. They charge us 52 per cent…,” he said.
