Pak 'Scholar' Behind Kulbhushan Jadhav Kidnapping Shot Dead In Balochistan

Pak 'Scholar' Behind Kulbhushan Jadhav Kidnapping Shot Dead In Balochistan

A Pakistani “scholar” accused of helping Pakistan’s ISI spy agency in kidnapping former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav from Iran, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the restive Balochistan region on Friday night. Mufti Shah Mir was a leading religious scholar in Balochistan who had survived two earlier attempts on his life, reported local media.

He was ambushed by gunmen riding motorcycles while leaving a local mosque in Turbat after his night prayers, police said. He was shot multiple times at point blank range and died at the hospital on Friday.

Mir was a member of the fundamentalist party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) who worked as an arms and human trafficker under the cover of a scholar, according to The Times of India. He was also close to the ISI. Reports suggest that he often visited terror camps in Pakistan and helped terrorists infiltrate into the Indian territory.

Two other members of Mir’s party were shot dead last week in Khuzdar, the third largest city in Balochistan.

The province has been witnessing deadly clashes and enforced disappearances of civilians, including activists, journalists, and politicians, allegedly by state forces. At least 18 securitymen and 23 terrorists were killed during clashes in this region earlier this year.

Kulbhushan Jadhav Case

Jadhav, who ran a business in Iran’s Chabahar after taking premature retirement from the Navy, is on death row in Pakistan after being convicted of spying by a military court in 2017. India condemned the verdict and accused Islamabad of not allowing a fair trial.

His execution was halted in 2019 with the International Court of Justice asking Pakistan to review his conviction and grant him consular access.

He was kidnapped from near the Iran-Pakistan border in 2016 and handed over to the Pakistani army. He is currently in the Pakistani prison. Mullah Omar Irani, a member of Jaish al-Adl who played a key role in kidnapping Jadhav, was allegedly shot dead by ISI operatives in Turbat in 2020.

In 2021, Pakistan adopted a bill to allow Mr Jadhav appeal his conviction, but India said the law had the same “shortcomings” of a previous legislation and “failed” to create an atmosphere that will ensure a fair trial in this case.

Probe Agency Seizes Business Jet At Hyderabad Airport In “Ponzi Scam” Case

Probe Agency Seizes Business Jet At Hyderabad Airport In “Ponzi Scam” Case

Hyderabad:

The Enforcement Directorate has seized a business jet parked at the Hyderabad airport as part of a money laundering investigation against a Hyderabad-based company and its promoters who allegedly duped numerous investors in a Rs 850 crore Ponzi “scam”, official sources said on Saturday.

The money laundering case stems from a Cyberabad police FIR against Falcon Group (Capital Protection Force Pvt. Ltd.), its CMD Amar Deep Kumar and some others, the sources said.

It is alleged that the Falcon Group “collected” Rs 1,700 crore from investors for high returns through a “fraudulent” invoice discounting investment scheme.

Rs 850 crore, out of the total funds, was re-paid leaving a total of 6,979 investors unpaid, according to the sources.

Kumar, the sources said, fled the country using this jet.

He or his company could not be contacted immediately for a response on the charges.

Officials from the ED’s Hyderabad office found that the 8-seater business jet ‘N935H Hawker 800A’ (owned by a company of Kumar) landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International airport located in the Shamshabad area on Friday, the sources told PTI.

A search of the jet, purchased for about USD 1.6 million (about Rs 14 crore) in 2024, was conducted by ED officials on Friday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and they also recorded the statement of the crew and some “close associates” of Kumar present there, the sources said.

The business plane, owned by Kumar’s private charter company named Prestige Jets Inc, was seized after the search, they said.

The agency believes that the jet was purchased from the “proceeds of crime” of the alleged Ponzi scheme.

The ED sought a general declaration about the jet’s movement from the Customs department after which it was found that Kumar along with another person left the country onboard the said aircraft on January 22.

Cyberabad Police has arrested the vice president and director of the company as part of its investigation, the sources said.

“Don't Know How To Respond”: India Coach Sitanshu Kotak Loses Cool Over 'Advantage' Query | Cricket News

“Don't Know How To Respond”: India Coach Sitanshu Kotak Loses Cool Over 'Advantage' Query | Cricket News

Just two days remain before the ICC Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand begins in Dubai. While the Indian team arrives into the title-decider with zero defeats to their name, New Zealand’s one and only loss came against their opponents in the final. Despite the fact that India have played near-perfect cricket to reach the final, a large chunk of credit for their journey so far, is being given to the venue in Dubai.

India, unlike other teams in the Champions Trophy, have played all of their matches at a single venue – the Dubai International Cricket Stadium – while others have had to fly to multiple cities. It’s this reason that has made many assert that the Indian team had an ‘undue advantage’ in comparison to others in the Champions Trophy.

Team India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, however, shut down the talks in the press conference on Friday, saying it’s not like the conditions in Dubai were changed after the Champions Trophy draw was made.

“I don’t understand what advantage there is and what advantage we have gotten. There is nothing about the advantage. The draw was decided a long time ago. When India have won four matches, then people are thinking we have been given an advantage,” Kotak told reporters in Dubai.

“I don’t know how to respond to this. At the end of the day, you have to play good cricket. If you don’t play well, you can’t complain. If you play well, there is no point saying there was some advantage. We are practicing here, we are playing matches there. Obviously, different wickets. That is how the draw is. Nothing else can be done. It’s not like conditions were changed after coming here,” he added.

For Kotak, there remains a simple rule behind winning games, which is to play good cricket. Those who haven’t been able to do so, are now complaining.

“I don’t know what advantage. The tournament’s draw is like this from the start. So, nothing has changed. If people think all this after us reaching the final, that’s tough, man. That is how the game goes; we have played as per the draw. There is no advantage. You have to play good cricket to win,” he said.

Video: 14-Year-Old Forcibly Married, Physically Carried Off By Husband

Video: 14-Year-Old Forcibly Married, Physically Carried Off By Husband

Bengaluru:

A teen roughly carried off by a man, her cries and shrieks carrying over the barren fields. While another man and woman follow, they make no attempt to come to her aid. This video from Karnataka’s Hosur is now being widely circulated on social media and has led to the arrest of all four adults.

The girl is a 14-year-old girl from Thimmathur, a small village in the Thottamanju mountain area near Tamil Nadu’s Hosur. After studying till Class 7 in a local school, she was staying at home – as happens so often in the country’s rural pockets.

But on March 3, her family married her off Madesh, a 29-year-old labourer from the mountain village of Karnataka’s Kalikuttai. Her protests went unheard.

The wedding took place in Bengaluru.

After returning to her hometown of Thimmathur, the girl expressed dissatisfaction with the marriage again and refused to go to her in-laws’ house. She also voiced her protests to her parents and relatives.

But her protests fell on deaf ears again. Madesh and his elder brother Mallesh, 38, forcibly carried off the girl from a relative’s house to Kalikuttai village.

Visuals of what amounts to a kidnapping was recorded on cellphone by onlookers and uploaded on social media, where it went viral.

The All-Women Police station in Denkanikottai is now investigating the matter. A formal complaint has been filed by the girl’s grandmother.

On Wednesday, the police arrested Madesh, his brother Mallesh, and the girl’s mother Nagamma. Earlier today, two more arrests were made – the girl’s father and Mallesh’ wife.

Cases have been filed against all of them under various sections pf POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) and Child marriage Act. All of them face two years in jail and a find that may extend to Rs 1 lakh.

The girl is now living with her grandparents.

Marriage of a woman under the age is 18 is illegal and under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, and is considered null.

The act also provides punishments for various offences for allowing or conducting child marriages between minors or marrying minors with adults. Despite this, child marriage is still widespread across the nation, especially in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh .

As per data available in 2023- 2024, the authorities had received information about 180 child marriages in Karnataka; 105 such marriages were prevented and in the remaining 75 instances, police cases were registered.

How A Chinese National Became One Of UK's Most Dangerous Sexual Predators

How A Chinese National Became One Of UK's Most Dangerous Sexual Predators

New Delhi:

A PhD student, convicted of drugging and assaulting multiple women, could be among the most prolific sexual predators in the UK, investigators say.

Zhenhao Zou, a 28-year-old Chinese national, was found guilty of multiple charges, including rape, voyeurism and possession of pornographic material. Law enforcement officials fear the number of his victims may be much higher than currently known.

Who is Zhenhao Zou?

Originally from China, Zou came to the UK in 2017 to pursue higher education. He was studying at Queen’s University in Belfast before moving to London in 2019 for a master’s degree, and later a PhD at University College London (UCL).

Coming from a wealthy background, he led a life of luxury. He used to spend thousands on rent, designer clothing and cosmetic procedures.

How he did it

Zou planned his assaults, using hidden cameras to record his victims without their knowledge. His crimes spanned both the UK and China. The attacks reportedly occurred between 2019 and 2024.

Investigators found that he used drugs, including ecstasy and an industrial chemical that converts into GHB, commonly known as a “date-rape” drug.

Police found a collection of his victims’ clothing and jewellery from him. According to a report in BBC, Zou recorded nine assaults as “souvenirs” and kept a trophy box containing his victims’ jewellery and clothing.

Evidence against him

The prosecution presented extensive video footage of the assaults, revealing horrifying details of how Zou preyed on unconscious or semi-conscious women.

During the trial, jurors had to watch disturbing footage of nine rapes, leading to visibly emotional reactions in the courtroom.

Judge Rosina Cottage described Zou as a “dangerous and predatory” offender and warned that he faces a lengthy prison sentence, set to be delivered on June 19, stated the BBC report.

Scale of the crimes

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police believe there could be as many as 50 more victims. “Such is the insidious nature of these offences, I think there is a possibility that many more victim-survivors may not even know that he has, in fact, raped them,” Cdr Kevin Southworth was quoted as saying by BBC.

Following media coverage of the case, at least one woman has contacted the police with concerns about Zou. Authorities are now urging more victims, particularly from the Chinese student community in London, to come forward.

“If you’re a woman who’s in any way had a one-on-one encounter with this man Zou, then we would like to hear from you,” Cdr Southworth added.

Legal proceedings

Zou was found guilty of 11 counts of rape, with two offences involving the same victim. He was also convicted of three counts of voyeurism, 10 counts of possessing extreme pornographic images and one count of false imprisonment.

The jury also found him guilty of three counts of possessing a controlled drug with intent to commit a sexual offence.

In his defence, Zou claimed that his actions were consensual and part of a pre-discussed role-play scenario with one of the women he filmed.

University and prosecutors respond

UCL president Dr Michael Spence said that they were appalled by these offences.

Saira Pike from the Crown Prosecution Service thanked the women who came forward to report Zou’s crimes, stating that they have been incredibly strong and brave “Zou is a serial rapist and a danger to women,” added Pike.
