13 Dead After Jumping Off Train Over Fire Rumour, Getting Hit By Another

Thirteen people were killed after a fire rumour on a train crossing Maharashtra’s Jalgaon triggered panic among passengers, with several of them jumping off the train and getting crushed by another incoming train, said the police.

The accident took place between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora, 400 km away from Mumbai, where the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express, a Daily Superfast Express train that runs between Lucknow to Mumbai, had halted after someone pulled the chain due to a rumour of fire around 5 pm, Central Railway officials said.

Some passengers of the Pushpak Express stepped down, and were hit by the oncoming Karnataka Express, heading from Bengaluru to Delhi, said Central Railway’s chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila.

“Our preliminary information is that there were sparks inside one of the coaches of Pushpak Express due to either ‘hot axle’ or ‘brake-binding’ (jamming), and some passengers panicked. They pulled the chain, and some of them jumped down on the tracks. At the same time, Karnataka Express was passing on the adjoining track,” a senior railway official told news agency PTI.

Out of 13 dead, seven people have been identified while there is no information about the six. The missing body parts have further compounded the search.

Harrowing images showed bodies lying on tracks and some people wandering around with blood all over them.

An accident relief train has been dispatched from Bhusaval, said the Central Railway, adding that all efforts are being made to provide medical aid to the injured passengers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish over the rail accident.

“Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos, announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families who lost a loved one in the tragedy.

“Some passengers in the train mistakenly assumed that smoke is coming out of the train and they jumped. Unfortunately, they were run over by another train. I announce Rs 5 lakh to each kin of the deceased persons in this accident,” the Chief Minister said in a video message.

The state government will bear the entire cost of treatment of the injured passengers, the Chief Minister added.

“Our minister Girish Mahajan is personally overseeing the rescue and support to the victims of the accident. I have spoken to district administration and police officials there (in Jalgaon),” the Chief Minister further said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah condoled the loss of lives in the accident and discussed the matter with the Chief Minister.

“The railway accident that happened at Jalgaon in Maharashtra is very sad. I discussed the matter with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and got information about the incident. The local administration is providing all possible help to the injured. I express my condolences to the civilians who died in the accident and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured person,” Mr Shah said in a post on X.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke to the Railway Board Chairman and other officials to understand what happened and has issued directions that the injured must be attended to immediately.

Injured Saif Ali Khan Had Locked Attacker In Bathroom. How He Escaped

Injured Saif Ali Khan Had Locked Attacker In Bathroom. How He Escaped

Mumbai:

Bangladesh national Shariful Islam Shehzad, who allegedly broke into actor Saif Ali Khan’s home to commit robbery and stabbed him multiple times during a fight, wanted to flee to his home country after the incident, police have found.

According to police sources, Shariful had planned to first travel to Howrah near Kolkata and then proceed to Bangladesh when he realised that police were after him. He tried to arrange for a train ticket to Howrah, but travel agents demanded more money because of the short notice. Before he could get his hands on a ticket, Shariful was arrested from Thane.

Cops are now tracking down all the travel agents he spoke to question them as part of the investigation into the high-profile case. The actor, who has suffered six stab injuries in the shocking attack, returned home yesterday after he was discharged from the hospital. Doctors, it is learnt, have advised him bed rest for a week and asked him not to receive any visitor now to prevent infection.

Cops Piece Together Sequence Of Events

Mumbai Police, which was left red-faced after the late-night attack in an area home to several celebrities, is going all out to get to the root of the case at the earliest. A police team took Shariful to the actor’s Bandra home yesterday to recreate the crime.

Police have found that on Wednesday night, the intruder scaled wall of the compound to approach the 12-storeyed building the actor lives in. He found the security guards of the building asleep. He then used the back staircase and air-conditioning duct to enter Mr Khan’s home through a window in one of the bathrooms. Shariful has told police that he had removed his shoes and kept them in his bag to prevent any noise. He had also switched off his phone.

Mr Khan and his house helps managed to lock Shariful into a room after the stabbing, but he escaped through the air-conditioning duct and fled down the stairs.

Police have found Shariful’s face cover from the room of Mr Khan’s younger son Jahangir, where the actor and the intruder had clashed. This face cover is being sent for forensic testing.

What Happened That Night

Eliyama Philip, a nanny for Saif’s sons, has told the police that she was the first to spot the intruder. The 56-year-old has said she was woken up by some noises around 2 am. She saw the bathroom door open and the light on and assumed that Kareena Kapoor Khan was checking on Jahangir or Jeh.

“… then I went back to sleep but, again, I realised something was wrong. So I woke up again and saw a man come out of the bathroom and go into the boy’s room. I quickly got up and went to Jeh’s room. The attacker then put his finger near his mouth and said ‘Don’t make any noise, nobody will go out’ in Hindi,” Ms Philip has said. “When I rushed to pick up Jeh, the man, armed with a wooden stick and a long Hexa blade. ran towards me and tried attacking me, she said.

“I tried to block the attack by putting my hand forward, but the blade hit me near the wrists of both my hands and on the middle finger of my left hand,” she said. “At that time, I asked him, ‘What do you want?’. He said, ‘I want money.’ I asked, ‘How much do you want?’ He said in English, ‘one crore’,” Ms Philip has said in her statement.

Hearing Ms Philip scream, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan rushed out of their room. When Mr Khan asked the intruder what he wanted, he attacked him with a wooden object and the hexa blade, Ms Philip said.

“Saif Sir somehow managed to get away from him and we all ran out of the room and pulled the door of the room,” she said, adding that everyone then went to the upper floor of their home. The intruder later escaped, she has said.

How Accused Was Caught

Police formed 30 teams to track down the accused. The cops scanned CCTV footage of the building and noticed the suspect leaving after the attack. Several hours of footage from across the city were scanned to find a match. During this tenuous exercise, cops found footage from DN Nagar in Andheri. They saw the suspect getting off a bike and tracked down the two-wheeler using its number.

Parallelly, following local intelligence inputs, police zeroed in on a rented accommodation at Koliwada in Worli, where the accused lived with three others. A police team questioned the people living there. They managed to get the suspect’s name and related information. Police also got his phone number and used it to track his location. The accused had been hiding in a thicket on a deserted road in Thane. Police surrounded him from all sides and then took him into custody.

After his arrest, they found that he was a Bangladesh national who had illegally crossed into India months back.

Pakistani Man Enters Lion's Cage For TikTok Video. He Was Mauled

Pakistani Man Enters Lion's Cage For TikTok Video. He Was Mauled

A daring TikTok video shoot went horribly wrong when a caged lion attacked a Pakistani man at a breeding farm in the nation’s Punjab province.

The man, identified as Muhammad Azeem, entered the lion’s cage without the farm owner’s permission and got dangerously close to the big cat in a bid to shoot a viral video.

“As Azeem got closer to the lion with his cellphone, the big cat attacked him, leaving him with injuries to his head, face, and arms,” the police said.

The owner of the breeding farm heard Azeem’s cries and rushed to rescue him. Azeem was them shifted to a hospital, where his condition is currently stated to be critical.

Legal action has been ordered against the farm owner, including the cancellation of his breeding license.

“Keeping of five species of big cats – lions, cheetahs, tigers, pumas, and jaguars – have been regulated under the law. There had been no legislation for the past 70 years regarding the keeping of these animals, leading to their presence in homes,” said senior Pak minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

“A strict ban has been imposed on displaying these animals on TikTok or other social media platforms. Minimum standards have been established for keeping them, and they must be housed outside city limits. Owners will be given time to relocate these animals; failure to comply will result in legal action and FIRs,” she added.

The cabinet of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz included the big cats in Schedule II of the Wildlife Act of 1974 last week, legally regulating their possession.

Usha Vance Becomes 1st Indian-American Second Lady

Usha Vance Becomes 1st Indian-American Second Lady

Washington:

Usha Vance became the first Indian-American and Hindu Second Lady after her husband J.D. Vance was sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the US on Monday.

She held the Bible in one hand, and their daughter Mirabel Rose in the other, as Vance placed his left hand on the religious text, and raising his right hand took the oath of office.

President Donald Trump said later that Usha Vance is smarter than her husband and that he might have picked her as the Vice President.

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a mentor to Usha Vance, administered the oath to her husband.

J.D. Vance was sworn in before President Donald Trump took the oath of office.

Before the Vances came to the podium, military personnel in ceremonial uniforms brought their children, Ewan Blaine, 7, Vivek, 4, and Mirabel Rose, 3, to the podium.

The boys wore formal suits, and Usha Vance was dressed in pink.

She beamed and looked admiringly at J.D. Vance as he repeated the oath after Kavanaugh.

J.D. Vance’s mother, Beverly Aikins who has given up drugs, stood with the family during the ceremony.

Usha Vance is the daughter of Telugu immigrants from India, Radhakrishna “Krish” Chilukuri, an aerospace engineer, and Lakshmi Chilukuri, the provost at the University of California, San Diego.

J.D. Vance and Usha met while they were studying law at Yale University.

J.D. Vance, who came from a broken family with his mother a drug addict, and suffered poverty, credited Usha in his memoir with being his “spirit guide” who helped him navigate the Ivy League university and professional life.

Raised by his grandmother, Vance joined the military to escape the dysfunction of life in Middleton, Ohio, and got his break with admission to Yale, where he said he felt out of place.

He wrote: “In a place that always seemed a little foreign, Usha’s presence made me feel at home.”

They married in 2014.

After briefly practicing law, J.D. Vance turned to business as a venture capitalist.

Entering politics, he was elected to the Senate in 2022.

Usha Vance is a corporate litigator who left a prestigious law firm after he was named the Vice President candidate.

She worked previously as a clerk for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Kavanaugh while he was an appeals court judge.

J.D. Vance also influenced her.

She switched her membership from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.

“Let US Own 50% TikTok”: Trump After App Restores Service

“Let US Own 50% TikTok”: Trump After App Restores Service

Washington DC:

Hours after going dark, TikTok began restoring its services on Sunday after incoming President Donald Trump said he would revive the social media app’s access in the United States when he returns to power on Monday. The Chinese social media app also thanked Mr Trump for “providing the necessary clarity and assurance”, hours after TikTok was forced to suspend its operations in the US to comply with the Biden administration’s ban order.

“In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service,” the Bytedance-owned app said in the earlier statement, while it also thanked the US President-elect.

“We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States,” the post said.

In another message to its users, TikTok said, “As a result of President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the US.”

The praise for the Republican came after Donald Trump took to his Truth Social and said he is planning to issue an executive order after taking over as the 47th President of the US to delay the enforcement of the TikTok ban for 90 days.

He said would “extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect so that we can make a deal to protect our national security.”

“I would like the United States to have a 50 per cent ownership position in a joint venture,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Mr Trump said the executive order would specify there would be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before his order.

Hours later, addressing a rally ahead of his inauguration, Mr Trump on Sunday said, “Frankly, we have no choice. We have to save it”. He added that the US will seek a joint venture to restore the short-video sharing app used by 170 million Americans.

TikTok stopped working for American users late on Saturday before a law shutting it down on national security grounds took effect on Sunday. US officials had warned that under Chinese parent company ByteDance, there was a risk of Americans’ data being misused.

Mr Trump had earlier said he would most likely give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from the ban after he takes office, a promise TikTok cited in a notice posted to users on the app.

But the Republican leader’s stance to save TikTok is in stark contrast to his first term in office. In 2020, he aimed to ban the app over concerns the company was sharing Americans’ personal info with the Chinese government. More recently, Trump has said he has “a warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” crediting the app with helping him win over young voters in the 2024 election.

In August 2020, Trump signed an executive order giving ByteDance 90 days to sell TikTok but then blessed a deal structured as a partnership rather than a divestment that would have included both Oracle and Walmart taking stakes in the new company.

On Mohammed Siraj's Champions Trophy Exclusion, Rohit's Blunt Verdict: “Effectiveness Comes Down…” | Cricket News

On Mohammed Siraj's Champions Trophy Exclusion, Rohit's Blunt Verdict: “Effectiveness Comes Down…” | Cricket News

A significant point which came out from India’s squads for the ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy was the exclusion of pacer Mohammed Siraj, with captain Rohit Sharma saying his effectiveness goes down by a little bit when not handed the new ball. Rohit also said that Siraj, who has 71 ODI wickets against his name in 44 games, including picking a remarkable six-fer in the 2023 Asia Cup final, was not locked in for a certain role in the team, especially with question marks still around Jasprit Bumrah’s availability.

In place of Siraj, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has earned a spot after becoming the highest wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He joins the fast-bowling department for the twin 50-over assignments alongside Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya.

“That’s purely because we thought over it. We are not sure about Bumrah, whether he is going to play or not. So, we thought of wanting someone who can bowl with the new ball and at the backend. So we picked Arshdeep to bowl at the backend. Shami, we all saw what he can do with the new ball.”

“That is where we feel that Siraj’s effectiveness comes down a little bit when he is not bowling with the new ball. We discussed it at length about it, as we are only taking three seamers there because we wanted all these all-rounders with us. It’s an unfortunate thing that he has to miss out.”

“But we had no option but to get the guys who can perform a certain role. I personally feel we have guys who can bowl with the new ball, be effective in the middle, and at the back end, as well as cover all facets of the game. With these three bowlers, we think we can do that,” said Rohit in the press conference in Mumbai after the squad announcement.

In eight ODIs, Arshdeep has picked 20 wickets and brings in the variety via his left-arm angles and variations. For the England ODI series, India have also got seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana, with Rohit equating his inclusion with that of young left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“Arshdeep hasn’t played a lot of ODIs, but he has been around the white-ball circuit for a long time. I don’t think I feel comfortable saying he is not experienced. He has bowled some tough overs, played T20Is and can handle that pressure. Shami is a stalwart in white-ball cricket, and what he did in the World Cup was superb to watch.”

“With Harshit, we needed something different. He has shown he has got the potential. So, we need to back him. It’s very hard to ignore numbers, but look at Jaiswal. We picked him based on what he has done in the last 6–8 months. He has not played a single ODI game, but we still picked him because he has shown potential.”

“Sometimes, we need to do that, and in that, some players will miss out, which is very unlucky and unfortunate. If you talk about everyone, we can’t please everyone. Yes, it’s a tough call, but we needed to take it, as at the end of the day, you try and make the best team, and the best possible squad to win games under different situations,” added Rohit.

Shami is back in the 50-over set-up after last featuring in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he picked 24 wickets to become the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. An Achilles injury needing surgery kept him out of action for nearly a year, before making a competitive comeback in the fifth round of the Ranji Trophy in Indore last year.

Though Shami missed out on the Test series in Australia due to knee swelling, he has been picked for the five T20Is against England, starting on January 22 in Kolkata. “We don’t have to speak about the quality that he brings. To get him involved in T20Is was precisely that – just to get him back into international cricket and play under pressure a little bit even though it’s 20-over cricket,” said chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

“You have to be at high intensity and just to get him up to pace before the ODIs start. I mean, he has got obvious quality. So if he was fit, he was always going to be part of the discussion. We are hoping that he comes through these games. By the time the Champions Trophy comes around, he is at 100 per cent,” he added.
