“Congress Ignored BR Ambedkar's Contributions”: PM Steps Up Attack

“Congress Ignored BR Ambedkar's Contributions”: PM Steps Up Attack

New Delhi:

Stepping up the attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused the party of ignoring BR Ambedkar’s contribution to the country and always giving the credit to one family. The PM’s comments, made during an event to lay the foundation stone of the Ken-Betwa river linking project in Madhya Pradesh, came amid a row over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar, which have attracted criticism from the Congress and other opposition parties.

Speaking at the event in Khajuraho, PM Modi also said only nations with well-managed water resources can make progress and that Ambedkar’s vision played a significant role in strengthening the country’s water resources.

“Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s vision and farsightedness have contributed significantly to strengthening India’s water resources, water management, and dam construction. Ambedkar ji played a crucial role in the development of major river valley projects in India. His efforts are also behind the formation of the current Central Water Commission,” the PM said

But the Congress party, he said, never paid heed to the country’s growing need for water conservation and did not recognise the efforts of the architect of the Constitution as a water conservationist. Congress and governance do not go together, the PM emphasised, adding that past Congress governments delayed projects for 35-40 years after laying their foundation stones.

“The major challenge of the 21st century is water security. In the 21st century, only those countries that have adequate water resources with proper management will move forward,” he said.

The PM’s attack follows similar scathing remarks against the Congress over the Ambedkar issue by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Assam Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis, Yogi Adityanath and Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Congress has hit back, accusing the BJP of being hostile to democracy and the Constitution.

“The BJP and the Sangh have always opposed the makers of the Constitution, the protectors of the Constitution, the givers of freedom, and the protectors of democracy. All these facts clearly indicate that the Sangh, BJP, and their affiliated organisations cannot tolerate democracy and the Constitution in any form,” Congress leader Surendra Rajput said.

The controversy was ignited last week, when Mr Shah said in Parliament that taking Ambedkar’s name had become a fashion.

Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they took God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven),” he said.

Solar Project Inaugurated Too

The PM also inaugurated the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district virtually, and laid the foundation stone of the Daudhan Irrigation Project, which is part of the Ken-Betwa river linking project.

Union Water Resources Minister CR Patil and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav handed over two ‘kalash’ (urns) containing water from the Betwa and Ken rivers, to the Prime Minister, who poured it over a model of the project.

The PM said the river linking project will open new doors of prosperity and happiness in the Bundelkhand region.

Officials said nearly 44 lakh people in ten districts of Madhya Pradesh and 21 lakh people in Uttar Pradesh will get drinking water under the project, which is estimated to cost Rs 44,605 crore. They added that nearly 7.18 lakh agricultural families in 2,000 villages will benefit from the project, which will also generate 103 MW of hydropower and 27 MW of solar energy.

PM Modi also released a commemorative stamp and a coin in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose birth centenary was on Wednesday. The Vajpayee government had proposed river linking as a solution for the country’s irrigation needs.

PM Modi also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of 1,153 ‘Atal Gram Sewa Sadans’, estimated to cost Rs 437 crore, at the Khajuraho event.

8-Year-Old Killed In Delhi Military Area For Resisting Rape, Teen Arrested

8-Year-Old Killed In Delhi Military Area For Resisting Rape, Teen Arrested

An eight-year-old girl was strangled and her body was found in an army cantonment area in Delhi after she resisted a teen’s effort to rape her, the police said. A 19-year-old, who lived in the locality, has been arrested.

The child was missing since yesterday evening and her parents were searching for her all night. This morning, her body was found hanging from a rod in a vacant building in the Shankar Vihar military area. The body has been sent for postmortem.

The police said they zeroed in on the teen after going through the CCTV footage from the area.

“During interrogation, the accused revealed that he lured the victim, who used to call him ‘brother’, to an isolated house in the locality and tried to force himself on her. When she resisted, he strangled her,” news agency Press Trust of India quoted an un-named officer as saying.

He had also tried to pass off the murder as a suicide by tying a scarf around her neck, the police said.

The relatives of the girl had alleged that she had been raped and murdered. Demanding justice, the locals had blocked the National Highway Jaipur Road earlier today, but ended their protest after assurances from the police.

“The local military authorities are extending full support to the grieving family during this difficult time and cooperating closely with the police, who are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter,” said the Station Commander of the Delhi Cantonment.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family, and we remain in constant touch with them to provide any assistance they may require,” he added.

Explained: Donald Trump's Big Warning Over Panama Canal Amid Rising Chinese Influence

Explained: Donald Trump's Big Warning Over Panama Canal Amid Rising Chinese Influence

Washington DC:

The thought of China is haunting Donald Trump who is troubled over Beijing’s growing influence right under US’ tail – the Panama Canal – a bridge connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean through strategically located Panama, the country which links North and South America.

US President-elect Trump, who is always ready to threaten others with tariffs, is also perturbed by Panama charging “excessive tariffs” for the use of the Panama Canal. So unsettled is he, by the combination of these two factors, that Mr Trump has openly declared that the US might consider taking control of the Panama Canal.

Writing about his concerns on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump warned that he would never let the Panama canal fall into the “wrong hands.” Reminding the government in Panama that the canal was originally built by the United States more than a century ago, Mr Trump wrote “It was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else”.

He further re-posted a video of himself titled “We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!”

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PANAMA CANAL

Till the early 20th century the shortest way to reach the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean and vice versa was to either sail around Cape Horn located in Chile at the southern tip of South America or to sail through the Strait of Magellan – also at the southern end of South America – in Chile. Both meant sailing around the entire continent of South America and nearly reaching Antarctica before sailing back up either into the Pacific or the Atlantic – this was neither economical, nor efficient.

After much thought, research and survey, a narrow, but possible way was discovered cutting across the Isthmus of Panama. However, there was a herculean challenge to be overcome in order to achieve that. The waterway was at different levels and there was no way a ship could either climb or descend where there was a sudden change in topography. For the waterway in the isthmus to be converted into a man-made canal, it would require an engineering marvel – one that was both inconceivable and unheard of in the early 20th Century.

The United States of America was the only nation at the time that had the technical knowledge and expertise to be able to make it happen. And so, in May, 1904 – less than a year after Panama declared Independence from Colombia in November, 1903, the US began the construction of the Panama Canal. A treaty was signed between the United States and Panama under which the canal would be constructed and managed by the US. After 10 years of engineering works round-the-clock, the Panama Canal became a reality in August, 1914 with the SS Ancon becoming the first ship to pass through the canal.

The US continued to control and operate the canal and its surrounding areas until a new agreement was signed between Panama and the US called the Torrijos-Carter Treaty in 1977. This provided for the handover of the canal to Panama after joint operations for nearly two decades. The Panamanian government took full control of the canal in 1999.

DONALD TRUMP vs PANAMANIAN PRESIDENT JOSE MULINO

Apart from the warning that the US would never allow operations of the Panama Canal to be handed over to another country amid China’s growing influence and muscular posturing globally, Donald Trump expressed his displeasure over “very high” tariffs being charged by Panama.

Writing on Truth Social, Mr Trump said “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the US.”

“It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question,” Mr Trump added.

Hours after Donald Trump’s warning, the Panamanian government responded, though without naming the US President-elect. Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino dismissed the threats by posting a video on social media platform X that “Every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent areas belongs to Panama and will continue belonging to Panama.”

“The canal has no direct or indirect control from China, nor the European Union, nor the United States or any other power,” President Mulino said, adding that “As a Panamanian, I reject any manifestation that misrepresents this reality.” His video message was in Spanish.

President Mulino also said he hopes to have “a good and respectful relationship” with the incoming Trump administration. Donald Trump responded soon after the posts by the Panamanian President but kept everyone guessing when he wrote “We’ll see about that!”.

Meanwhile, amid the power tussle between the US and China in terms of its military and naval prowess, it is important to note that China now has the world’s largest navy, surging past the United States. China has a declared fleet size of more than 370 ships and submarines. This is significantly larger than the fleet size of the US Navy, which is 290 ships and submarines.

The Panama Canal is among the most crucial waterways of the world in terms of trade and commerce, and freedom of navigation of the seas has been among the topmost priorities of the democratic world, and a cornerstone of its policy.

“No Chief Minister Face, No Agenda”: Arvind Kejriwal Counters BJP Attack

“No Chief Minister Face, No Agenda”: Arvind Kejriwal Counters BJP Attack

Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi launched registration for Mahila Samman Yojana

The BJP does not have any vision for Delhi and its sole agenda is to abuse Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said today. “The BJP neither has an agenda nor a Chief Minister face for this election. BJP knows only one thing: how to abuse Kejriwal,” the AAP national convener said as the party started doorstep registrations for the Mahila Samman Yojana with an eye on Assembly polls due in February.

The BJP, on the other hand, came out with an aarop patra (allegation list) against the AAP government in the national capital. BJP MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur said Delhi’s government is the most inefficient in the country. “They (AAP) said free water for all, today people pay thousands to tankers. They said they will make Delhi pollution-free, see the AQI for yourself. They said corruption-free, ministers have gone behind bars,” Mr Thakur said.

Targeting the AAP government on the pollution in Yamuna, Mr Thakur said, “My Purvanchali brothers and sisters who celebrate Chhath, Kejriwal’s government made Yamuna so polluted they we cannot even celebrate our festival there. Kejriwal ji you said you will take a dip, 2025 is here, it’s time.”

The BJP also slammed AAP on the issue of women’s safety. “Why weren’t you able to use Nirbhaya fund? What happened to those fast -track courts you were going to set up?” Mr Thakur asked.

Law enforcement has been a contentious issue between Delhi’s AAP government and the Centre. Delhi Police reports to the Union Home Ministry and the ruling AAP has repeatedly sought its control and criticised the Centre for crimes in the national capital.

“I am asking them, all seven MPs in Delhi are from BJP, why are you not taking care of law enforcement. It’s deteriorating day by day,” Mr Kejriwal said today, countering the BJP’s attack.

Responding to the BJP’s ‘chargesheet’, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “Delhi citizens know us better. Bharatiya Jhoota Party’s politics is based on lies.”

Mr Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi today launched doorstep registration for Mahila Samman Yojana and the Sanjivani medical insurance scheme. “Under Mahila Samman Yojana, every woman who registers will get Rs 2,100 every month. And those over 60 who register for Sanjivani Yojana, the government will bear cost for their treatment,” he said.

Assembly polls in Delhi are due in February and the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is pushing for a third consecutive term. Mr Kejriwal stepped down as Chief Minister after he was granted bail in a corruption case. He has said he would return to the top office only after the “people’s verdict in this election. The BJP, meanwhile, is going all out to turn the tables on AAP and ensure its defeat.

AAP vs BJP As Delhi Tableau Rejected For Republic Day Parade Yet Again

AAP vs BJP As Delhi Tableau Rejected For Republic Day Parade Yet Again

New Delhi:

Delhi will not have a tableau in the traditional Republic Day parade at the Rajpath again this year. This would be the fourth time the national capital has not been included — a situation that has sparked a war of words again between Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP. Mr Kejriwal, who headed the Delhi government for almost a decade, led his party’s attack on the BJP — his comments coloured by the coming assembly election.

“For the last so many years, the tableau of Delhi is not allowed to participate in the parade. What kind of politics is this? Why do they hate the people of Delhi so much? Why should the people of Delhi vote for them?” Mr Kejriwal said in a pointed message.

“They have no vision for the people of Delhi. They only abuse Kejriwal. Should we vote for them just for this? Why are the tableau and the people of Delhi being stopped from participating in the 26th January parade?” he said.

Delhi, he added, is the capital of India and should be represented every year in the January 26 parade.

The BJP claimed Mr Kejriwal’s comments indicated his “anarchist nature” and questioned what the former Chief Minister wished to display.

“I want to ask him what he wants to show (in the tableau of Delhi). The severe overflow where more than 60 people died… or the ‘Sheeshmahal’ that he has made by looting the money of people,” said Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva.

“The tableau of the whole country is displayed in the parade of Republic Day. A committee decides the tableau. Now, Arvind Kejriwal wants to do politics in this too,” he said.

“We have not forgotten the Republic Day of 2014 when Arvind Kejriwal staged a protest,” Mr Sachdeva added.

Last year too, Delhi was not allowed a tableau in the parade. Senior AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said it was the third time in a row and claimed it was the BJP’s “revenge” after losing to AAP in the Punjab assembly election.

Mr Bharadwaj said it’s not a coincidence that Punjab’s tableau proposal was also rejected.

Officials said the last time Delhi’s tableau featured in the Republic Day parade was in 2021. It showcased the Shahjahanabad redevelopment project.
