Sheikh Hasina's Father's Home Set On Fire By Mob In Dhaka During Her Speech

New Delhi:

A large group of protesters on Wednesday vandalised and set on fire Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka during a live online address of his daughter and deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Witnesses said several thousand people rallied in front of the house at the capital’s Dhanmondi area, which was earlier turned into a memorial museum, since early evening following a social media call for “Bulldozer Procession” as Hasina was supposed to make her address at 9 pm (BST).

Hasina delivered her address organised by the Awami League’s now-disbanded student wing Chhatra League and called upon the countrymen to organise a resistance against the current regime.

“They are yet to have the strength to destroy the national flag, the constitution and the independence that we earned at the cost of lives of millions of martyrs with a bulldozer,” Hasina said in an apparent reference to Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus’s incumbent regime, installed by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.

She added: “They can demolish a building, but not the history … but they must also remember that the history takes its revenge.” The student movement earlier promised to scrap Bangladesh’s 1972 Constitution as they promised to bury the “Mujibist constitution” while some far-right groups also suggested change of the national anthem adopted by Sheikh Mujib-led post-independence government.

The house became an iconic symbol in Bangladesh history as Sheikh Mujib largely led the pre-independence autonomy movement for decades from the house while during the successive Awami League rule when it was turned into a museum, foreign heads of state or dignitaries used to visit in line with state protocol.

The 32 Dhanmondi residence was set on fire earlier on August 5 last year when Hasina’s nearly 16-year Awami League regime was toppled and she secretly left the country along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana for India on a Bangladesh Air Force flight.

Hasina said she and her only surviving sibling had donated their ancestral house to a trust as a public property, turning the building into Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, as Sheikh Mujib was fondly called “Bangabandhu” or “Friend of Bengal” since the late 1960s when his movement for autonomy from Pakistan turned into a mass upheaval in 1969.

He was killed along with most of his family members in a coup staged by a group of junior or mid-ranking military officers on August 15, 1975 when Hasina and Rehana were in Germany.

The deposed premier in a slight emotion-choked voice said that the Pakistani troops also looted the house during the 1971 Liberation War but did not demolish or set it on fire.

“Today, this house is being demolished. What crime it had committed? Why they were so afraid of the house… I seek justice from the people of the country. Didn’t I do anything for you?” she said.

Witnesses said a group of army troops emerged at the scene to persuade the protestors but they were greeted with boos.

The protesters first damaged a mural of the assassinated leader on the building’s boundary wall and wrote “There won’t be 32 anymore”.

A key-organiser of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Abdul Hannan Masud, meanwhile, called for the demolition of all residences belonging to former Awami League MPs and ministers in a Facebook post proposing new buildings be constructed on those sites. Earlier in the day, convenor of the platform Hasnat Abdullah warned Bangladesh media outlets against broadcasting Hasina’s speech, saying it would be seen as facilitating her agenda.

In her speech, Hasina, however, said the ordinary students were used by Yunus for an orchestrated movement to grab the state power and urged them to go back to their studies to build their future to serve the country.

Meanwhile, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Wednesday that the interim government is making all efforts to bring back Hasina and others from India under the extradition treaty.

Hasina, 77, has been living in India since August 5 last year when she fled Bangladesh following a massive student-led protest that toppled her Awami League’s 16-year regime.

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civil officials for “crimes against humanity and genocide”.

Rahul Dravid's Car Suffers Collision With Auto In Bengaluru. Heated Argument Follows. Video | Cricket News

Legendary Indian cricketer and former India head coach Rahul Dravid was filmed in a heated argument with an auto-rickshaw driver on the streets of Bengaluru on Tuesday evening. The video, seemingly captured by a roadside passerby, showed a visibly displeased Dravid arguing with the driver in his native language Kannada. As per reports, Dravid’s car had suffered a collision with a goods auto, leading to the on-street argument between him and the driver. It is unclear whether Dravid was driving his car.

According to a report in news agency IANS, the accident took place on Cunningham Road, a busy area in Bengaluru. Sources stated Dravid was travelling from Indian Express Junction towards High Grounds when the incident occurred. The auto driver allegedly rammed into his car from behind while it was stuck in traffic. Sources said Dravid took down the auto driver’s contact number before leaving the scene. More details regarding the incident are yet to emerge.

The video of Dravid being involved in a heated argument went viral on social media. Something being said about brakes could be heard from the argument.

As per a post on social media platform X by Times of India Bengaluru, the accident and subsequent argument took place on Cunningham Road after a minor collision. The post states that no one from either vehicle was hurt in the process.

The report also says that Dravid took the goods auto driver’s phone number and the registration number of the auto before leaving from the scene.

“Not Very Big”: Hema Malini Shocker On Kumbh Stampede That Killed 30

“Not Very Big”: Hema Malini Shocker On Kumbh Stampede That Killed 30

New Delhi:

The stampede at the Maha Kumbh – in which 30 people were killed and over twice that number injured – “was not a very big incident”, actor and BJP MP Hema Malini said Tuesday, days after her “very nice bath” at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and (mythical) Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj.

“… it was not a very big incident. I don’t know how big it was (but) it is being exaggerated,” she declared, also praising Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s administration for a “very well-managed” religious gathering. “Everything was done very well…” she continued, also seeming to excuse the stampede as ‘inevitable’ given “so many people are coming… very difficult to manage”.

On criticism by opposition leaders – who have accused the UP government of hiding the real number of deaths – she shrugged, “They will say what they want to… It is their job to say wrong things.”

Hema Malini took her ‘holy dip’ last week, after which she declared she was “feeling great”, and said, “I have never had such an experience before… I am fortunate to take the holy dip.”

The comments invited a sharp jab from Tariq Anwar, the Congress MP from UP’s Katihar, who said the actor could “never know what it (the horrific crowding that led to the stampede) was really like”.

“When she visited, she was given VIP treatment. Things at Maha Kumbh went downhill because the police and administration were both (looking) after VIPs. They did not bother about the arrangements and security for common people. If she says this is not a big issue… it is a mockery of the victims.”

The Samajwadi Party responded through MP Dharmendra Yadav, who also pointed out Hema Malini would have had VIP treatment for her visit to Prayagraj. “She is the ruling party leader and a big artist… it is possible she had special facilities (but) hundreds died and that is not hidden from anyone.”

Maha Kumbh Stampede

Thirty people were killed in a stampede after a restive crowd jostled for space and burst past barriers to take that ‘holy dip’, or ‘amrit snaan‘. At least 60 were injured in the tragic event.

The stampede triggered furious pushback from opposition parties, particularly after the state government seemed to delay confirming fatalities; a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the families of those killed, well before the UP Chief Minister acknowledged deaths.

Opposition’s Attacks On Stampede

Ex-Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party has been at the forefront of the opposition’s calls for justice for the victims (and their families) and holding the government to account. This morning too, speaking in Parliament, he demanded that “those hiding the truth be punished”.

Mr Yadav has repeatedly raised this issue inside and outside the House, even leading his MPs on a symbolic walk-out last week as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman began reading the Union Budget.

Later that day he told reporters, “There is something more important now than a ‘budget’.”

The SP boss was joined in his fierce attacks by colleague Jaya Bachchan, who is also an actor-politician; Ms Bachchan on Monday ripped into the BJP and the state government, accusing them of dumping the bodies of those killed in the stampede into the Ganga River.

“Where is the water most contaminated right now? It is in Kumbh. No one is giving any clarification on that. Bodies have been thrown in the river because of which water is contaminated… ” she said.

The BJP took strong exception to her remarks, accusing its rival of “hurting the sentiments of Hindus” and warning them that they “will have to face the repercussions”. The party also said Rs 1,600 crore had been spent for water management, including waste disposal, in this Kumbh period.

In Parliament and out, the SP and other opposition parties have demanded a verified list of those who died in the stampede, arguing the BJP’s UP government is trying to hide the actual number.

Kharge’s Attacks

Meanwhile, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge fired barbs of his own this week, declaring in the Rajya Sabha that “thousands” had been killed in the stampede.

When the BJP protested, and the Chair, Jagdeep Dhankhar, demanded he retract the comment, Mr Kharge said, “… how many people died… give that information at least. I will apologise if I am wrong.”

“Maharashtra Won't Forgive You”: D Fadnavis On Rahul Gandhi's Poll Claim

“Maharashtra Won't Forgive You”: D Fadnavis On Rahul Gandhi's Poll Claim

Introspect, apologise was the message from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to Rahul Gandhi, just hours after the Congress leader alleged new voters were added mostly in constituencies where the BJP won in the Maharashtra election.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Monday alleged that about 70 lakh voters, equivalent to Himachal Pradesh’s population, were added to the electoral rolls in Maharashtra between the Lok Sabha and state elections.

“Introspect instead of insulting Maharashtra! You have insulted the people of Maharashtra, the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule and Veer Savarkar. You have questioned the democratic mandate given by the people of Maharashtra to the NDA just because your party was vanquished,” hit back Mr Fadnavis, whose BJP, with 132 seats, recorded its best-ever performance in the state, while the Congress managed to win just 16 seats in the November polls.

“Instead of introspection, you are indulging in slander. The people of Maharashtra won’t forgive you for this. Apologise Mr. Rahul Gandhi!” Mr Fadnavis added.

Speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha, Mr Gandhi alleged that about 70 lakh voters, equivalent to Himachal Pradesh’s population, were added to the electoral rolls in Maharashtra between the Lok Sabha and state elections.

“Now, I want to bring to the notice of this House some data about Maharashtra polls. Between the Lok Sabha polls, which the INDIA bloc won, and the assembly elections, the number equivalent to the population of Himachal was added to the voting rolls of Maharashtra,” Mr Gandhi told the House, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

“More voters were added in Maharashtra in five months between the Lok Sabha and assembly polls than in five years,” the former Congress president said.

Mr Gandhi had last month alleged that there is a “serious problem” with the country’s election system and that the Election Commission needs to ensure there is transparency in polls.

Maintaining that “something wrong” has taken place in the Maharashtra assembly elections, he had said the Congress and the Opposition have been asking for voter lists of Maharashtra and Haryana elections, which the poll body is refusing to provide.
