Scientists From India, A Telescope In Chile, And An Astronomical Discovery

New Delhi:

Astronomers from India have made an intriguing discovery in a unique tri-star solar system located 489 light years from Earth. The discovery will help astrophysicists get a better understanding of planetary formations.

Astronomers from the National Institute of Science Education and Research or NISER in Odisha have made the discovery using the advanced radio telescope in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Their observations, sustained over a period of time, reveal fascinating insights into the complexities of planetary formation.

The three-star system that was being observed was the ‘GG Tau A’ solar system which is in its nascent stage of planetary formations. The system is believed to be around 5 million years old. What makes it unique is that there are three ‘Suns’ with a massive protoplanetary disk – a rotating disk of gas and dust that forms around a young star and provides the materials for new planets to form.

Because the three stars orbit each other, the giant ring of gas and dust, which over time will form planets, get significantly altered due to the gravity of the stars in their orbiting pattern, giving scientists fascinating insights.

WHAT THE INDIAN ASTRONOMERS HAVE DISCOVERED

The team of astronomers from NISER was led by scientist Liton Majumdar, who is also a visiting scientist at NASA. His area of specialisation is star and planetary formations, astrochemistry, and exoplanet studies.

His team and he have detected molecular emissions from the protoplanetary disk which are the fundamental building blocks of planets. These emissions were found to originate in the coldest and most dense regions of the star system.

The team carried out their research focusing on the coldest regions of the tri-star system, where temperatures are believed to be as low as 16 Kelvin or  minus (-)257.15 degrees Celsius – well below the freezing point of carbon monoxide.

Carbon Monoxide is key for scientists to trace the mass of gas during the formation of planets. The chemical composition of carbon monoxide – CO – carries carbon and oxygen, and reacts with other gases to form compounds like CH4 (methane). Its bright color helps astronomers model protoplanetary disks.

INSIGHTS FROM THE DISCOVERY

While scientists have been studying single star solar systems like our own, and have also carried out research on binary star systems like Alpha Centauri, understanding the complexities of a tri-star system is unique. The GG Tau A star system being located in our cosmic neighbourhood also helps answer key questions in astrophysics.

It helps understand the fundamental nature of planetary formation under the complications caused due to the gravitational force of three host stars.

Gravity, temperature, mass (energy), pressure, and frequency are key aspects of physics and studying these in a three-star system gives scientists a challenge as well as an opportunity to make groundbreaking discoveries in such complex conditions.

THE RADIO TELESCOPE IN ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE

The astronomers from India used the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment or APEX radio telescope – one of the highest telescopes on Earth – located at a height of 5,064 meters above sea level in the Atacama desert in Chile.

The facility is built and operated by three European research institutes – The European Southern Observatory, The Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, and The Onsala Space Observatory.

The APEX telescope is a modified ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) prototype antenna and is at the site of the ALMA observatory.

The ALMA telescope, also located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, is an astronomical interferometer of 66 radio telescopes which observe the electromagnetic radiation from space at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths.

“Without Your Unrelenting Efforts…”: JFK's Thank You Note For SM Krishna

“Without Your Unrelenting Efforts…”: JFK's Thank You Note For SM Krishna

Johan F Kennedy wrote to SM Krishna in 1961

Padma Vibhushan SM Krishna served in several top positions at the Centre and the state level, including Governor, External Affairs Minister and Chief Minister, in a political career that spanned half a century. But before his deep dive into domestic politics, he played a key role in a US election as a law student there. And was appreciated by none other than charismatic US President John F Kennedy.

In 1960, Democratic leader Kennedy was running for President. Mr Krishna, then a 28-year-old law student in the US, wrote to Mr Kennedy and offered to campaign for him in areas dominated by Indian Americans. The next year, Mr Kennedy was elected President and did not forget the contribution of the young Indian student.

In a letter dated January 19, 1961, Mr Kennedy wrote to Mr Krishna, “I hope that these few lines will convey my warm appreciation for your efforts during the campaign. I am most grateful for the splendid enthusiasm of my associates. I am only sorry I have not been able to personally thank you for the excellent work which you performed in behalf of the Democratic ticket.

“Without your unrelenting efforts and loyalty, victory would not have been possible last November 8th,” Mr Kennedy wrote, two years before he was assassinated in one of the most shocking events in world history.

Mr Krishna, who had been ailing for some time, died at his Bengaluru home this morning. He is survived by his wife Prema and daughters Shambhavi and Malavika.

After finishing his education at the George Washington University Law School, Mr Krishna returned to India. His long political journey started in 1962 when he won the Maddur Assembly seat in Karnataka as an Independent candidate. He was with the Praja Socialist Party before joining the Congress.

Over the next five decades, he served as Karnataka Chief Minister, Maharashtra Governor, External Affairs Minister and Assembly Speaker. His term as Karnataka Chief Minister from October 1999 to May 2004 is credited with changing the face of Bengaluru and starting its transformation into an IT hub. After a five-decade journey with the Congress, Mr Krishna joined the BJP in 2017 before eventually retiring from politics in 2023, citing his advanced age and health issues.

AAP-BJP Engage In Poster War Ahead Of Delhi Polls Inspired By 'Pushpa 2'

AAP-BJP Engage In Poster War Ahead Of Delhi Polls Inspired By 'Pushpa 2'

AAP is working hard to retain power in Delhi for a third time

New Delhi:

Allu Arjun-starrer blockbuster “Pushpa 2” has led to a poster war between the ruling AAP in Delhi and the opposition BJP ahead of the Assembly polls scheduled early next year.

AAP recently issued a poster on the lines of the movie, titling it in bold letters “Kejrwal Jhukega Nahi” based on the cult dialogue of the movie.

In the poster, Arvind Kejriwal poses as the protagonist of the flim, carrying AAP’s symbol ‘jhaadu’ (broom) on his shoulder. “4th Term Coming Soon” read the poster, referring to the previous electoral successes of Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP in 2013, 2015 and 2020 in the Delhi Assembly polls.

The Delhi BJP on Monday issued its own poster showing the party’s state president Virendra Sachdeva posing as the movie’s character Pushpa on a throne with “Bhrashtachariyon Ko Khatam Karenge” (will finish the corrupt) written in bold letters.

“Rappa-Rappa” the poster read, copying Pushpa’s dialogue in the movie.

AAP is working hard to retain power in Delhi for a third time after its massive electoral successes in 2015 and 2020 in which it routed the BJP, winning 67 and 63 seats, respectively, in the 70-member Assembly.

The leaders in the BJP, out of power in Delhi since 1998, consider the upcoming Assembly polls their best opportunity to end AAP’s sway in Delhi’s politics.

The two sides have been hitting out at one another through various media, including the social media with slogans, posters, memes and animation videos.

Earlier, the BJP gave the slogan “Ab Nahi Sahenge, Badal Kar Rahenge” (won’t tolerate now, will bring the change), asserting to end the AAP rule.

The BJP has accused the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP of indulging in corruption and failing to deliver the basic services to the people of Delhi during its 10-year rule.

AAP has focused on raising the issue of law and order situation in the city, citing incidents of crime to attack the BJP-led Centre and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The party has also released a lot of social media content, including posters to slam the BJP over the alleged rise in crime in the national capital.

Ousted Syrian President Assad, Family In Moscow, Granted Asylum: Report

Ousted Syrian President Assad, Family In Moscow, Granted Asylum: Report

New Delhi:

Ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and family have landed in Moscow and have been granted asylum, Russia state media reported today, hours after Islamist-led rebels took control of his country.

“Assad and members of his family have arrived in Moscow,” a Kremlin source told the TASS and Ria Novosti news agencies. “Russia granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds,” he added.

There was buzz on social media with flight trackers speculating the mysterious whereabouts of Assad for most part of Sunday.

A Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was taken by rebels, according to data from the Flightradar website.

The aircraft initially flew towards Syria’s coastal region, a stronghold of Assad’s Alawite sect, but then made an abrupt U-turn and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before disappearing off the map.

The sudden change in course and disappearance of the plane from tracking could indicate it had been shot down, or that it had switched off its transponder.

With Assad and family in Russia now, it is clear the plane had switched off its transponder.

Assad’s departure comes less than two weeks after the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group challenged more than five decades of the Assad family rule with a lightning offensive.

“After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny and displacement… we announce today the end of this dark period and the start of a new era for Syria,” the rebel factions said on Telegram.

The Islamist leader of HTS, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, visited the capital Damascus’s landmark Umayyad Mosque, as crowds greeted him with smiles and embraces. HTS is rooted in the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda.

Proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Western governments, HTS has sought to soften its image in recent years.

Across Syria, people toppled statues of Hafez al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad’s father and the founder of the system of government that he inherited. For the past 50 years in Syria, even the slightest suspicion of dissent could land one in prison or get one killed.

As rebels entered the capital, HTS said its fighters broke into a jail on the outskirts of Damascus, announcing an “end of the era of tyranny in the prison of Sednaya”, which has become a by-word for the darkest abuses of Assad’s era.

UN war crimes investigators on Sunday described Assad’s fall as a “historic new beginning” for Syrians, urging those taking charge to ensure the “atrocities” committed under his rule are not repeated.

The rapid developments came just hours after HTS said it had captured the strategic city of Homs, where prisoners were also released. Homs was the third major city seized by the rebels, who began their advance on November 27.

US President Joe Biden was keeping a close eye on the “extraordinary events” unfolding in Syria, the White House said. US president-elect Donald Trump said that Assad had “fled his country” after losing Russia’s backing.

Mohammed Shami's Fitness Clearance Now “Formality”, To Play Border-Gavaskar Series vs Australia From… | Cricket News

Mohammed Shami's Fitness Clearance Now “Formality”, To Play Border-Gavaskar Series vs Australia From… | Cricket News

Senior India speedster Mohammed Shami is set to compete in the last two Tests of the ongoing series against Australia with his playing kit already headed Down Under and the fitness clearance from the NCA’s medical team being a “matter of formality”. While the Brisbane Test (from December 14) could be touch and go for the Bengal veteran, it is a foregone conclusion that he will be seen in Melbourne on Boxing Day (December 26) in the fourth Test. A source close to the cricketer said that the NCA “fitness certificate” will come very soon.

“Shami’s India kit has already been dispatched to Australia. He will complete Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 assignment and then leave,” the source told PTI.

The 34-year-old Shami, who last played for India in the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, was forced into the long layoff due to an ankle surgery that needed surgery.

Just before his much-anticipated comeback against New Zealand, Shami developed swelling in the knee delaying his return.

Since the knockout round of Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy is taking place in Bengaluru, it is expected that the NCA (National Cricket Academy) medical team head Dr Nitin Patel and Strength and Conditioning trainer Nishant Bordoloi would be assessing him after Bengal finishes its campaign in the National T20 championship.

“Shami will be playing the pre-quarter final for us against Chandigarh. He will join us in Bengaluru by tomorrow. However, I am not sure if he will be available if we qualify for quarters or go the distance. Guess he will be fit and available for last two Australia Tests,” Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who has had a good look at his premier bowler, told PTI.

Shukla echoed sentiments of former India head Ravi Shastri, who feels that Shami is needed as early as possible in Brisbane.

Shukla said Shami had done the right thing by deciding to play SMAT after bowling 43 overs in a Ranji Trophy game in Indore against Madhya Pradesh.

“He has already shed around six kilograms of body weight. He has played seven T20 games in 13 days. If he plays pre-quarters it will be eight games in 16 days.

“Shami himself wanted to play fair amount of domestic cricket and inform NCA how his body reacts,” Shukla, a former ODI player, said.

India won the first Test in Perth, while the second game, a day-nighter, is currently in progress in Adelaide.
