Equity benchmarks traded lower in Monday’s mid-session after a flat opening following a long weekend, as renewed geopolitical tensions weighed on investor sentiment. Domestic markets remained cautious after fresh military exchanges between the US and Iran. The BSE Sensex declined more than 400 points, while the Nifty 50 slipped around 115 points from their previous closing levels.
BSE Sensex traded 418.01 points or 0.54 per cent lower at 76,682.46 at 12.36 pm after hitting an intraday low of 76,771.41; and Nifty 50 declined by 116.35 points (-0.48%) to 23,939.65.
The weakness was more pronounced in the broader market. The Nifty Midcap 100 index fell 0.82 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap index declined 0.83 per cent at the time of writing.
Sectorally, Nifty Pharma and Healthcare outperformed the broader market, while the Metal index posted mild gains. All other sectoral indices traded in the red, with Nifty Auto, PSU Banks, IT, Cement and Chemicals emerging as the worst performers, falling 1-2 per cent.
Nifty 50 gainers, losers
Among the Nifty 50 constituents, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla, Max Health, Trent and Hindalco were the top gainers. On the losing side, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Eicher Motors, Tata Consumer Products and Mahindra & Mahindra declined the most.
Market breadth remained weak. Of the 3,305 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,168 advanced, 2,034 declined and 103 remained unchanged. During the session, 90 stocks touched their 52-week highs, 50 hit 52-week lows, while 81 stocks were locked in the upper circuit and 98 in the lower circuit.
Midcap & smallcap movers
In the midcap segment, Persistent Systems, Astral, Supreme Industries and Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services were among the biggest drags, falling up to 10 per cent. On the other hand, National Aluminium, Mankind Pharma, Laurus Labs and Lupin gained 2-3 per cent.
In the smallcap space, Ather Energy, Meesho, Aegis Logistics and Anand Rathi advanced 2-4 per cent, while Netweb Technologies, Brigade, Dr Lal PathLabs, Redington and Reliance Power fell 3-9 per cent.
On Thursday last week, Sensex settled 109.25 points or 0.14 per cent positive at 77,100.47, and Nifty 50 was up 34.35 points or 0.14 per cent to 24,056. Markets were closed on Friday on account of Muharram.
