Hardik Pandya ruled out of England ODIs after failing fitness test; Virat Kohli's status undecided | Cricket News | Zee News

Indian all rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the upcoming one day international series against England after falling short of the necessary fitness standards required for the 50 over format, India Today has confirmed.

According to reports, Pandya remains unavailable for the upcoming England matches because he has not yet finished a complete bowling progression and requires an extended period to achieve full match fitness. This development serves as a major blow just as the 32 year old cricketer seemed on the verge of returning to the ODI format following a lengthy absence.

Pandya recently went through a physical evaluation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence located in Bengaluru while recovering from a back spasm he picked up during the IPL 2026 season while captaining the Mumbai Indians. The player had successfully delivered a complete 10 over quota during recent practice routines, which had initially fueled optimism about his return to the national side.

Additional Injury Hurdles Explored

Unfortunately, the premier all rounder faced a separate physical setback during his recovery path. Earlier in the month, Pandya was forced out of India’s three match ODI series against Afghanistan due to a newly sustained quadriceps strain. It is believed that this fresh injury was directly connected to the sudden spike in his bowling intensity during the medical evaluations.

Pandya experienced a highly disrupted IPL season with the Mumbai Indians due to health issues, sitting out multiple games before returning exclusively for the franchise’s concluding league matches. His latest fitness failure has forced the national selection panel to hunt for an immediate alternative ahead of the English fixtures.

Implications for India’s 2027 World Cup Roadmap

This update comes at a vital juncture for India’s strategic white ball planning. Pandya continues to be a cornerstone of the limited overs squad because of the unique balance he offers as a fast bowling all rounder and a lethal lower order batsman. His physical absences have frequently forced India to scramble for proper team combinations, a pattern that became highly noticeable after the ankle injury he picked up during the 2023 ODI World Cup game against Bangladesh.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa quickly approaching, the team management has been highly focused on maximizing Pandya’s game time in 50 over cricket while simultaneously monitoring his physical condition.

The chairman of the national selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, had recently spoken about the absolute necessity of preserving Pandya for the longer white ball format.

“He is a part of the one-day squad right now in Afghanistan. Like Jasprit Bumrah, if we can get him playing well and keep him fit for one-day cricket, that is the main objective,” Agarkar had said.

“We can always bring him back. So, there will be a little bit of rest and rotation with regards to T20 cricket in Pandya’s case.”

In the meantime, the team’s hunt for versatile all round options is ongoing. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate recently voiced his support for Nitish Kumar Reddy, branding him as a future replacement and a natural insurance policy for Pandya. The team management is closely tracking the development of the young prospect as they construct their blueprint for the 2027 global tournament.

Reports also indicate that Virat Kohli will undergo a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru on June 22, which will determine his availability for the England ODI series later this month. Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah have been declared fit for selection, and the Centre of Excellence (CoE) report has already been submitted to the national selectors.

For football fans following the action on Indian Standard Time (IST), the tournament moves into high stakes Group E, Group F, and Group H matchups across North American host cities, setting up a massive lineup of fixtures through the night and into Sunday, featuring two unbeaten sides in Germany and Ivory Coast, alongside a blockbuster Group H clash between Spain and Saudi Arabia.

USA vs Australia (Group D): The co-hosts delivered a statement performance in Seattle, with the United States cruising to a 2-0 win that booked their spot in the knockout rounds with a game still to play.

Morocco vs Scotland (Group C): Morocco wasted no time making its mark in Boston, with Ismael Saibari finding the net inside the opening minute to secure a 1-0 win and put the Atlas Lions firmly in control of Group C.

Brazil vs Haiti (Group C): Five-time champions Brazil left no room for doubt in Philadelphia, with a Matheus Cunha brace and a Vinicius Junior strike in the first half sealing a comprehensive 3-0 win that sent Brazil to the top of the group and all but ended Haiti’s hopes of advancing.

Turkiye vs Paraguay (Group D): A late-night thriller in Santa Clara is still unfolding as this report goes out, with Paraguay holding a 1-0 lead deep into the second half despite playing a man down after Miguel Almiron’s red card. Both sides came into the match needing a result to keep their World Cup hopes alive, and the final outcome was yet to be confirmed at the time of writing.

UPCOMING FIXTURES WITH IST TIMINGS

GERMANY VS IVORY COAST (GROUP E)

Venue: BMO Field, Toronto, Canada

Kickoff: Sunday, June 21 at 1:30 AM IST (Saturday Night / 4:00 PM Local ET)

Both sides arrive unbeaten and full of confidence for this Group E showdown. Germany head into the match on the back of a thumping 7-1 win over Curacao, showcasing ruthless attacking depth, while Ivory Coast will look to repeat the disciplined, physical defending that helped them edge out Ecuador 1-0 in their opener.

ECUADOR VS CURACAO (GROUP E)

Venue: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, USA

Kickoff: Sunday, June 21 at 5:30 AM IST (Early Morning / 8:00 PM Local ET)

With both teams off the mark after defeats in their opening fixtures, this clash in Kansas City carries genuine knockout stage stakes. Ecuador will lean on their compact, disciplined shape after a narrow loss to Ivory Coast, while Curacao look to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Germany and salvage their World Cup debut campaign.

TUNISIA VS JAPAN (GROUP F)

Venue: Estadio BBVA, Monterrey, Mexico

Kickoff: Sunday, June 21 at 9:30 AM IST (Morning / 12:00 AM Local ET)

Group F throws up a tense battle as Tunisia, fresh off a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden, look to rediscover their attacking edge against a Japan side that showed plenty of fight in their 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. Japan’s blend of sharp passing and high-tempo pressing will be tested by a Tunisian side desperate for a response.

SPAIN VS SAUDI ARABIA (GROUP H)

Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, USA

Kickoff: Sunday, June 21 at 9:30 PM IST (Tomorrow Night / 12:00 PM Local ET)

Day 10 closes out with a heavyweight Group H fixture in Atlanta. Delhi Capitals set for major coaching overhaul; likely to rope in Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly for IPL 2027 | Other Sports News | Zee News

Delhi Capitals set for major coaching overhaul; likely to rope in Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly for IPL 2027 | Other Sports News | Zee News

In a massive development ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, Delhi Capitals (DC) are reportedly preparing for a complete structural overhaul as the JSW Group prepares to take operational control from next season.

The JSW Takeover Prompts Management Shuffle

The sweeping changes come as the JSW Group prepares to assume full operational and management control of the Delhi Capitals men’s team for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. Under a unique ownership agreement, co-owners JSW and the GMR Group alternate management duties every two years.

With JSW taking the reins, the existing support staff appointed by GMR – including head coach Hemang Badani, Venugopal Rao, and Munaf Patel – is set to make way for a brand-new leadership unit.

The revamp follows a string of disappointing campaigns for the franchise. Despite boasting high-profile stars like Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Mitchell Starc, and Kuldeep Yadav, Delhi Capitals failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years, finishing fifth in 2025 and dropping to sixth in 2026.

Dada And Yuvi: Reunited In Dugout

Sourav Ganguly, who has previously overseen JSW’s broader cricket portfolio (including the SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals and the DC Women’s team), is returning to call the shots for the men’s IPL team – likely as Director of Cricket or head of the coaching staff.

While Yuvraj has never held a formal, full-time coaching position in the IPL since retiring from competitive cricket in 2019, his unofficial work as a mentor has been highly celebrated in Indian cricket.

Yuvraj, the 2027 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup winner, brings a wealth of experience and has previously worked with emerging stars like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, and his appointment is seen as a major boost for DC’s batting unit, which has often struggled for consistency.

Broader Changes On The Horizon

The coaching revamp is part of a larger restructuring. Speculation is rife about other potential moves, including:

  • A possible return of Rishabh Pant to Delhi via a trade (potentially involving Kuldeep Yadav heading to Lucknow Super Giants).
  • KL Rahul emerging as a strong candidate for captaincy.

With a fresh management structure, Ganguly’s tactical acumen, and Yuvraj’s legendary limited-overs expertise, Delhi Capitals are drawing an ambitious blueprint to reverse their fortunes and chase their elusive maiden IPL title in 2027.
