Rohit Sharma still not assured a guaranteed place in ODI setup for 2027 WC, as Gill calls it a 'Good headache' after Jaiswal scores century | Cricket News | Zee News

India defeated Afghanistan by 9 wivkets in the 3rd ODI at Chennai winning the series comprehensively by 3-0. The outstanding batting displays by Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal during the third One Day International match against Afghanistan have presented the Indian team leadership with an encouraging selection dilemma.

Jaiswal’s Stunning Form Intensifies Competition for Opening Spot

The incredible form of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has recently hammered his second century within a span of three matches, has heightened the spotlight on the spot of veteran opening batsman Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format.

In the final game of the series, the 39-year-old cricketer successfully overcame an initial period of tentativeness, capitalizing on a dropped chance early in his innings to smash a blistering 79 runs off just 69 deliveries. Working alongside Jaiswal, Rohit built a massive 170-run opening stand, which featured his aggressive attack against Afghanistan’s premier spin bowler Rashid Khan prior to his dismissal.

Shubman Gill Opens Up on India’s Selection Headache

Even though Rohit concluded the three-match bilateral series with an upward trajectory of scores consisting of 16, 48, and 79 runs, discussions persist regarding whether these knocks guarantee his selection for the impending tour of England.

If the veteran player keeps his position at the top of the order, it presents a difficult selection choice concerning Jaiswal. The 24-year-old batting prodigy has displayed incredible touch, maximizing each opportunity to secure his place despite the irregular appearances in his early ODI career.

When questioned about the roadmap moving forward, India’s captain Shubman Gill acknowledged the impending selection puzzle. The dilemma intensifies because if Virat Kohli makes his return to the lineup, Gill is expected to return to the opening slot alongside Rohit Sharma, which could potentially leave the in-form Jaiswal out of the starting team.

“I mean, it’s a good kind of headache to have, having all the players that are performing. And I think the squad will be announced either tomorrow or in the next couple of days. We’ll see where everyone’s fitness is. If everyone is fit, like I said, the squad will be announced and we’ll see who is in the squad and based on the squad, we’ll try to make the best XI possible,” Gill said.

Gill Backs Jaiswal to Make the Most of Every Opportunity

Gill further elaborated on Jaiswal’s current momentum and how the availability of senior players impacts the younger batsman’s spot in the playing XI.

“Honestly, we all know he (Jaiswal) is a phenomenal player and it’s not easy for any player. If all the players are available, he is the unfortunate one who sometimes misses out and because Virat bhai was not available in this series, he had the opportunity. He got a couple of games and he played really well today. So hopefully, he will continue the form and he will continue to keep grabbing the opportunities that he gets,” Gill added.

Rohit Sharma Ends His ODI Fifty Drought

This half-century served as an essential turning point for Rohit in his current return phase, snapping a 196-day spell without a fifty-plus score in One Day Internationals. His last fifty in the format came on December 6, 2025, when he put together a steady 75-run knock against South Africa in Visakhapatnam.

Rohit Misses Historic Record but Makes a Timely Statement

If the veteran opening batter had transformed this positive start into a three-figure milestone, he would have rewritten cricket history as the oldest Indian player to hit an ODI hundred.

That milestone is currently owned by Sachin Tendulkar, who registered his final ODI century at the age of 38 years and 327 days. At the age of 39 years and 51 days, Rohit would have comfortably surpassed the legendary batter.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Undav’s late double stuns Ivory Coast, Germany snatch knockout spot in dramatic 2-1 win | Other Sports News | Zee News

FIFA World Cup 2026: Germany booked their place in the knockout stage with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto. Substitute Deniz Undav scored twice, including a stoppage-time winner, as the four-time champions came from behind after trailing at half-time.

The Group E clash had plenty at stake before kick-off. Both teams went into the clash with three points from their opening matches and knew victory would secure a place in the next round. Germany eventually got the job done, but only after being pushed hard by an Ivory Coast side that looked capable of causing another upset.

Kessie gives Ivory Coast the lead

Germany began brightly and almost scored within seconds when Kai Havertz met a long ball inside the box, only to send his effort over the bar. The Germans continued to create chances, with Havertz forcing a fine save from goalkeeper Yahia Fofana after connecting with a Joshua Kimmich cross.

Jamal Musiala and Felix Nmecha also tried their luck as Julian Nagelsmann’s side controlled possession for long stretches of the opening half. However, Ivory Coast was well-organised and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.

Their reward came in the 29th minute. Yan Diomande, who had been a lively presence down the flank throughout the opening period, reached the byline and drove a low ball across goal. Amad Diallo’s effort was blocked by Nathan Brown, but captain Franck Kessie reacted quickest to tap home from close range and give Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead.

Germany thought they had found an equaliser before the break when Havertz put the ball into the net, but the goal was ruled out after Musiala was judged to have fouled Odilon Kossounou in the build-up.

At half-time, Ivory Coast held a narrow advantage despite Germany seeing more of the ball and creating several openings.

Nagelsmann’s changes turn the game

Germany returned for the second half with Antonio Rüdiger replacing Nico Schlotterbeck, who had struggled after picking up an injury before the interval. Ivory Coast nearly extended their lead through Kessie and Inao Oulai, but both opportunities went begging.

The Germans continued to press. Havertz headed wide from close range and Kimmich repeatedly delivered dangerous balls into the area. Bringing on Jamie Leweling, Nadiem Amiri and Deniz Undav, Nagelsmann then made a triple substitution just before the hour mark.

The move changed the rhythm of the contest.

In the 68th minute, Amiri delivered a precise cross towards the back post and Undav arrived perfectly to finish from close range. The equaliser gave Germany fresh energy and turned the momentum in their favour.

Ivory Coast responded by introducing Simon Adingra, Seko Fofana and Evann Guessand, while Nicolas Pépé later entered the match. The African side still looked capable of finding a winner and came close when Pépé’s pass found Adingra inside the penalty area, only for the winger to hesitate at the crucial moment.

Germany also missed chances. Amiri was denied by Fofana from a promising position, while Brown forced another important save from the Ivorian goalkeeper.

Undav settles it at the death

With six minutes of added time announced, the match appeared to be heading for a draw that would have suited both teams. Germany slowed the tempo and kept possession, while Ivory Coast defended deep.

Then came the decisive moment.

In the fourth minute of added time, Undav broke free in the box and guided the ball past the keeper to seal a 2-1 lead. There was a brief check for offside, but the goal stood, sparking celebrations among the German players and coaching staff.

As the final seconds ticked away, Nagelsmann urged the referee to bring the game to an end. Moments later, the whistle came and Germany had their second consecutive victory of the tournament.

The result sends the team through to the knockout rounds and strengthens their grip on top spot in Group E. Despite the defeat, Ivory Coast are still well placed to advance when they face Curaçao in their final group match. Their performance in Toronto showed plenty of quality, but Germany’s depth from the bench ultimately made the difference.

Neymar back in action: Ancelotti confirms Brazil star's return for Scotland match at FIFA World Cup 2026 | Other Sports News | Zee News

Neymar back in action: Ancelotti confirms Brazil star's return for Scotland match at FIFA World Cup 2026 | Other Sports News | Zee News

Brazil, the five-time world champions, received a major lift in their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign as head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that superstar forward Neymar will be available for the team’s crucial final Group C match against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The announcement from Ancelotti came immediately after Brazil cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Haiti on Friday, a match that saw a brace from Matheus Cunha and a strike from Vinicius Junior.

“Neymar will be training tomorrow individually, and on Monday, he’s going to be training with the rest of the team. He will be available for the match against Scotland,” Ancelotti revealed.

Neymar is yet to play a single minute in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a grade-two right calf strain while playing for Brazilian club Santos on May 17. The injury forced him to watch from the sidelines during Brazil’s sluggish 1-1 draw against Morocco and the subsequent win over Haiti.

The 34-year-old has been restricted to individual rehabilitation protocols in New Jersey and has not completed a full team training session since the squad convened. However, following rigorous medical evaluations, the coaching and medical staff have finally given him the green light to rejoin full first-team dynamics on Monday.

Perfect Timing Amid Selection Concerns

Neymar’s return could not be better timed for Ancelotti. During the first half of the Haiti match, Barcelona winger Raphinha was forced off the pitch with what appeared to be a significant hamstring injury.

“We need to evaluate him. We don’t know the severity yet,” Ancelotti admitted.

With Raphinha’s availability for the rest of the group stage highly in doubt, Neymar’s veteran presence and unmatched flair will provide crucial reinforcement to an attacking line spearheaded by Vinicius Junior and an in-form Matheus Cunha.

Group C Standings & The Road Ahead

Brazil currently sits atop Group C following a solid 3-0 win over Haiti (goals from Matheus Cunha and Vinícius Júnior) and a prior 1-1 draw with Morocco. The match against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Florida, serves as a decisive fixture. Scotland still harbors hopes of progressing, making Neymar’s availability a timely psychological and tactical edge for the Selecao.

Injuries have hampered Neymar throughout Brazil’s qualifying campaign, but his inclusion in the squad despite the calf issue has sparked debate. Ancelotti’s careful management now appears set to pay off, with the player expected to rejoin full training ahead of the decider.

Vinícius Júnior, who claimed his second straight FIFA World Cup Man of the Match award for Brazil on Friday, highlighted Neymar’s importance to the team and expressed his excitement about sharing the stage with his idol at another World Cup.

“Neymar is a very important player for us. We hope he can play in the next match,” the Real Madrid star said.

“We are happy with his progress. Having him with the group is very important for all of us. He is my idol and has always given me a lot of support. I hope he comes back for the next game and helps us throughout the World Cup,” he added.

Neymar’s return could be pivotal. His vision, dribbling, and link-up play with talents like Vinicius Junior and Endrick offer Brazil added flair in attack. While fitness concerns remain – he is unlikely to start at full throttle – his presence on the bench or in a substitute role provides depth as the tournament intensifies.

Lamine Yamal unlikely to start in Spain's next FIFA World Cup 2026 match; Here's why | Other Sports News | Zee News

Lamine Yamal unlikely to start in Spain's next FIFA World Cup 2026 match; Here's why | Other Sports News | Zee News

Barcelona and Spain wunderkind Lamine Yamal has admitted he is not yet 100% fit and is highly unlikely to start in La Roja’s second FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match against Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

The 18-year-old Yamal, one of world football’s brightest talents, suffered a left hamstring injury in late April while playing for Barcelona. He missed the end of the club season but followed a conservative recovery plan coordinated between club and national team medical staff.

Speaking to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE ahead of the match at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Yamal preached caution over his recovery timeline, emphasizing that rushed decisions could backfire.

“I’m fine, I feel good, but it’s still too soon. It’s unnecessary to take risks. I’m going through an adaptation process, and it’s not the time to play a full match yet. But I can play as many minutes as the coach wants,”  Yamal said.

Spain’s Group H Situation

Spain currently sit level on one point with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay after the opening round of matches. The goalless draw against the African debutants has raised some questions about La Roja’s attacking fluency, particularly in the absence of key players at full fitness.

A win against Saudi Arabia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium would put Spain in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages. The final group game is against Uruguay on June 26.

Step-By-Step Recovery

Despite the external anxiety surrounding Spain’s lack of goals, Yamal urged fans and media not to panic, pointing out that several tournament favorites have started slow.  He also noted that fellow winger Nico Williams, who also arrived at the tournament carrying an injury, is progressing well.

“Physically, [Nico] is even better than me. We’re not in a rush,” Yamal said.

“We have a great team with top-level players and we have to go step by step. There was a bit of a fuss over a draw, but in the end, lots of teams have struggled in the first round – it doesn’t mean anything,” he  added.

While Yamal is expected to once again feature as a second-half substitute, Spain will have to find an alternative route to goal if they want to ignite their World Cup campaign on Sunday.
