Despite being a permanent opener in T20 cricket and one of the format’s earliest superstars, Sachin Tendulkar never opened the bowling. The legendary Master Blaster bowled just 93 deliveries across 96 T20 matches in his career, taking only two wickets. Sachin played India’s inaugural T20 International in 2006 and famously won the Orange Cap in IPL 2010 with 618 runs, yet the role of a bowling opener remained absent from his T20 resume.

‘Power Coach’ Idea Changes Everything for Dre Russ

The moment Russell accepted the coaching transition instead of entering another auction pool, his entire demeanour transformed.

“He smashed a trademark six, took catches, dived around. I even messaged him, jokingly calling him ‘power coach,’ and he loved it. He has fully accepted it,” Mysore added.

Russell Joins a Star-Studded KKR Backroom Staff

Following his official retirement from IPL playing duties, Russell enthusiastically stepped into his new designation as KKR Power Coach. He joins an already glittering support staff that includes Shane Watson as batting coach, Tim Southee as bowling coach, Dwayne Bravo as mentor, and Abhishek Nayar as head coach, making Kolkata’s backroom one of the most decorated in the tournament’s history.

Release Before Auction Took Emotional Toll on Russell

Despite stepping into a new role, the emotional weight of being technically released ahead of the 2026 mini-auction initially hit Russell hard.

“He said, ‘Wow, never been in an auction since 2014.’ It hit him after a couple of days. He told me he had sleepless nights wondering what would happen. He said he was so used to the purple and gold and the relationships here,” Mysore recounted.

From KKR Icon to Mentor as Legacy Grows

Russell later explained that the physical demands of continuing as a full-time all-rounder made the transition inevitable, adding that he could never see himself playing only as a batter and that coaching felt like the most natural progression.

Across 140 IPL matches, Russell scored 2,651 runs at a staggering strike rate of 174.18, claimed 123 wickets, won MVP awards in 2015 and 2019, and lifted the IPL trophy in 2014 and 2024. His move into the dugout not only safeguards his legacy at KKR but also frees up Rs 12 crore in the franchise’s purse ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

As the IPL 2026 mini-auction approaches, Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore has finally opened up about the reasoning behind not retaining star all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. The 26-year-old, who was acquired for a record INR 23.75 crore in the 2025 mega-auction, finds himself back in the auction pool after an underwhelming season with the franchise.

Despite his struggles last season, the 26-year-old remains one of the most sought-after Indian all-rounders. With a base price of INR 2 crore, he is among only two Indian players in that bracket, making him a hot property for franchises seeking a top-order batter who can contribute with the ball. The mini-auction, set for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, features 1,355 registered players, including 45 in the INR 2 crore category. With just 77 slots available across all teams, competition for players like Iyer is expected to be intense.

Iyer had a difficult IPL 2025 campaign, scoring only 142 runs in 11 matches and failing to make a significant impact with his bowling. This dip in form ultimately led to KKR’s decision to release him. The franchise had taken a huge gamble in 2025 by securing Iyer at a record price, banking on his prior performances and the team’s need for a strong Indian all-rounder.

CEO Breaks Silence

Addressing the move, KKR CEO Venky Mysore told ESPNCricinfo, “As I said at the start of our conversation, auctions create this, call it confusion or whatever, at times. I mean if he had scored 500 runs, he would’ve said, ‘hey, price tag doesn’t matter at all.’ Maybe it did (grins), and it weighed (on Venkatesh). He probably had his worst year by his standards with us since 2021. The thought process that goes through the franchise think-tank at the table is, what would you rather do? And I have as much money as possible and flexibility to engineer that whichever way you want, or just go in there and be at the mercy of whatever. And so last year, in many ways, it was a bit of a learning thing for us; it was purely very, very circumstantial. I mean this is probably the first time we have done something like that: picked a big player at price, that was quite exciting. Now, because of the mini-auction dynamics rather than anything else, we decided to release him.”

On the subject of auctions, Mysore added, “We have made our position very, very clear when last year we franchises had a big discussion with IPL around retention and various other significant topics. We said you cannot be punishing franchises who have worked very, very hard to build teams to identify talent, develop them and have had success. And suddenly you are saying that’s it, let’s do a mega auction every three years… Imagine you go win a championship and then you get dismantled after that. Or what happens is that the punishment for having good players to retain is so high that you see teams coming in with huge purses to the auction… I’m not in the camp which says auctions are exciting.”

As the IPL 2026 mini-auction approaches, all eyes will be on Iyer, with fans and franchises alike curious whether KKR will attempt to bring him back or if another team will swoop in to secure the talented all-rounder.

ACA-VDCA क्रिकेट स्टेडियम, विशाखापत्तनम में होने वाला यह मैच कोहली को वनडे क्रिकेट में लगातार तीन शतक लगाने का मौका दे रहा है, जो अब तक सिर्फ कुछ ही बल्लेबाजों ने हासिल किया है.

कोहली का फॉर्म सीरीज में बेहतरीन रहा

इस सीरीज के पहले दोनों मैचों में विराट कोहली का बल्ला जमकर बोला. पहले रायपुर और फिर रांची में उन्होंने शानदार शतक लगाए. दोनों मैचों में कोहली ने जिस तरह शुरुआती गेंदों से ही अटैक करना शुरू किया, उसने दिखा दिया कि यह स्टार बल्लेबाज अपने करियर के सुनहरे दौर की फिर से याद दिला रहा है.

कोहली इससे पहले भी यह कारनामा कर चुके हैं. साल 2018 में वेस्टइंडीज के खिलाफ घरेलू सीरीज में उन्होंने गुवाहाटी (140), विशाखापत्तनम (157*) और पुणे (107) में लगातार तीन शतक ठोके थे. भारत के लिए ऐसा करने वाले वह पहले खिलाड़ी थे. बाद में रोहित शर्मा ने भी 2019 विश्व कप में लगातार तीन शतक लगाकर यह उपलब्धि दोहराई.

कौन-कौन हासिल कर चुका है यह दुर्लभ उपलब्धि?

वनडे क्रिकेट के इतिहास में लगातार तीन शतक लगाना बेहद दुर्लभ रहा है. अब तक सिर्फ 13 खिलाड़ी ही यह उपलब्धि हासिल कर पाए हैं.

  • इसकी शुरुआत 1982-83 में पाकिस्तान के जहीर अब्बास ने की थी. उन्होंने भारत के खिलाफ ये कारनामा किया था.

  • सबसे लंबी शतकों की सीरीज का रिकॉर्ड श्रीलंका के कुमार संगकारा के पास है. उन्होंने 2015 विश्व कप में लगातार चार शतक जड़कर इतिहास रचा था.

  • साउथ अफ्रीका के ही खिलाड़ी क्विंटन डी कॉक भी इस इस सूची में जगह बना चुके हैं. डी कॉक ने 2013 में भारत के खिलाफ लगातार तीन शतक जड़े थे.

इस लिहाज से कोहली अगर विशाखापत्तनम में शतक लगाते हैं, तो वह इस लिस्ट में दो बार नाम दर्ज कराने वाले बेहद दुर्लभ खिलाड़ियों में शामिल हो जाएंगे.

भारत की जीत की कुंजी है कोहली

गौर करने वाली बात यह है कि जब भी कोहली शतक लगाते हैं, भारत के मैच जीतने की संभावना 83% तक बढ़ जाती है. ऐसे में निर्णायक मुकाबले में कोहली की पारी भारतीय टीम के लिए बेहद अहम होगी. सीरीज फिलहाल 1-1 की बराबरी पर है और घरेलू मैदान पर हार से बचने के लिए भारत स्टार बल्लेबाज से बड़ी पारी की उम्मीद होगी.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 draw produced one of the most talked about moments football fans had been eagerly waiting for. Defending finalists France, led by Kylian Mbappe, have been drawn in the same group as Erling Haaland’s Norway. The pairing guarantees a mouth watering group stage clash between two of the most dominant forwards of the modern era and immediately turns Group I into one of the standout groups of the expanded 48 team tournament.

Co hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, the World Cup will kick off on June 11, 2026. The opening match will see Mexico face South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca, a venue that will host a World Cup opener for the third time in history. The United States will begin their campaign a day later, taking on Paraguay in Inglewood, California.

Defending champions Argentina will launch their title defence in Group J with an opening fixture against Algeria. Lionel Messi’s side will also take on Austria and Jordan in what shapes up to be a competitive but evenly balanced group.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand hosted the ceremony and guided the proceedings throughout the night.

Three Leaders

Adding to the grandeur, leaders from the three host nations stepped onto the stage. United States President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney each drew their respective national teams’ group placements. The evening began with an unexpected moment when FIFA awarded its very first FIFA Peace Prize to President Trump, giving the event a distinctly political undertone even before the main draw commenced.

With the groups confirmed, the World Cup storyline is now taking shape. Lionel Messi’s final title defence, beginning against Algeria, is expected to dominate early headlines as Argentina attempt to defend their crown. Cristiano Ronaldo, grouped with Portugal in Group K, will get another opportunity to reignite the debate over football’s greatest of all time on the biggest stage.
