Ahmedabad to host IPL 2026 Final; Bengaluru stripped of hosting rights due to…

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 grand finale is officially moving to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), were originally expected to host the title clash on May 31, the BCCI has executed a full venue reshuffle for the postseason. This decision marks a significant departure from the long-standing IPL convention where the reigning champions earn the right to host the final at their home ground.

The Catalyst for the Shift: Logistics and Ticket Controversies

While the BCCI’s public stance emphasizes “operational and logistical considerations,” the move follows a period of intense friction in Bengaluru. Reports indicate that behind-the-scenes tension regarding ticket distribution played a major role.

Earlier in the season, political noise intensified when local representatives demanded complimentary access. Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar publicly argued that elected officials were “VIPs” who should not wait in lines like standard spectators. Although a compromise was reached to allot three tickets each to MLAs, MLCs, and MPs, the “requirements from the local association and authorities” reportedly exceeded the BCCI’s standard protocols.

The BCCI addressed the reassignment in an official media advisory:

“Owing to certain operational and logistical considerations, the TATA IPL 2026 Playoffs will be conducted across three venues this season as a special case. Bengaluru was originally designated to host the Final. However, owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned.”

A Multi-City Playoff Roadshow

For the 2026 season, the playoffs will be spread across three distinct venues, giving fans in the north and west a chance to witness the knockout stages. The schedule is as follows:

Qualifier 1 (May 26): The top two teams will face off at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, known for its high altitude and scenic backdrop.

Eliminator (May 27): The third and fourth-placed teams will battle at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

Qualifier 2 (May 29): The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator will meet in Mullanpur to decide the second finalist.

The Final (May 31): The season concludes at the world’s largest cricket ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad’s Dominance as a Final Venue

Ahmedabad is rapidly becoming the unofficial home of the IPL final, with 2026 marking the stadium’s fourth time hosting the summit clash in the last five seasons (having previously hosted in 2022, 2023, and 2025). The only recent exception was the 2024 final held in Chennai.

Current Standings and RCB’s Path

Despite losing the home-ground advantage for the final, Royal Challengers Bengaluru remains a powerhouse in the current competition. Currently sitting in second place with 12 points from nine matches, the defending champions are well-positioned to make another deep run. While they are still very much in contention to defend their title, they will now have to do so on neutral ground rather than in front of the “12th Man” at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

‘I provoked people’: Ex-India batter breaks silence on shocking IPL 2026 commentary snub

Sanjay Manjrekar has broken his silence regarding his absence from the IPL 2026 broadcasting panel, offering transparent reasons for his departure. As one of the most prominent voices in Indian cricket media, Manjrekar addressed the situation during a recent conversation with Sportstar, acknowledging that his candid style likely influenced the decision.

Reflection on Commentary Style

During the interview, Manjrekar admitted that his direct and often polarizing approach might have contributed to his exclusion this year. He recognized that his commentary frequently elicited strong responses from the audience.

“The other main reason is to give the viewers a little break as well from me,” he remarked.

When the interviewer mentioned the absence of provocative personalities in current broadcasts, Manjrekar responded with notable sincerity: “Maybe that’s another reason why I’m not on the panel as well. Okay, I provoked people.” These comments showcase a high level of self awareness regarding how his professional persona is received by the public.

Travel Fatigue and Personal Well-being

Beyond his broadcasting style, the former Indian cricketer cited significant lifestyle changes and the physical demands of the tournament as deciding factors. He explained that he deliberately chose to step back from the rigorous IPL itinerary to find a better personal equilibrium.

“Uh, well, my life has changed a little bit by my own design. There was actually one year when I was doing studio in Mumbai and doing IPL games on the ground, and I was on one of those flights, and it’s like Zombieland,” Manjrekar shared.

He further detailed the extent of his previous workload: “You sort of go from one place to the other, and I was trying to kill time, and I was looking at my phone, you know, from my travel agent and he would send me those e-tickets. I said, ‘Let me just count.’ I had taken 46 flights that IPL. And then I said, ‘This is… I have to restore some balance. So I have cut down on my travel a lot and focusing on a few important things that will give me, you know, better sort of life health-wise.”

His comments provide insight into the exhausting nature of constant travel during the cricket season and highlight his intentional shift toward prioritizing health and a more balanced professional life.

Sanju Samson scripts IPL History, becomes first player in the world to…

During a phenomenal performance on Tuesday night against the Delhi Capitals, Sanju Samson reached a landmark achievement in cricket history. The Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper batter delivered a match winning performance to secure his team’s fifth victory of the 2026 season. In pursuit of a 156 run target, Samson produced an unbeaten 87 from 52 deliveries, an innings decorated with 7 boundaries and 6 sixes. His collaboration with Kartik Sharma resulted in a remarkable partnership of 114 runs off 66 balls, establishing a new record in the tournament.

A Historic Partnership Record

This performance marked the fifth time a CSK pair has recorded a century partnership against Delhi. However, Samson set himself apart by becoming the first cricketer ever to participate in two separate 100 plus run stands against the Delhi Capitals within a single IPL edition. While Ruturaj Gaikwad holds the record for the most total century stands against the Capitals with three, those occurred across three different seasons in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Player of the Match Reflections

After being named Player of the Match, Sanju Samson discussed his technical adjustments and mindset during the post match presentation:

“I think we try to find out what works really well for you, and you try to stick to the basics, and you trust your hands to do the job in this format. I have been working a bit on my initial movement, a bit, and it has been coming off nicely,”

Samson also elaborated on why he chose to prioritize the team’s result over reaching a personal century:

“I had to be a bit too selfish to get that. So, I thought, let’s win the game, and the other partner was batting really well. Returning not out, finishing off the game gives you a better satisfaction. So, I just enjoyed it and a few more games to go. Let’s see if I get those three figures once again,”

Statistical Dominance in IPL 2026

Samson has joined an elite list of players who have scored the highest aggregate runs against a single opponent during the league stage of an IPL season:

Virat Kohli vs GL (2016): 209 runs

KL Rahul vs MI (2022): 206 runs

Sanju Samson vs DC (2026): 202 runs (via scores of 115* and 87*)

Chris Gayle vs PWI (2013): 196 runs

KL Rahul vs RCB (2020): 193 runs

The contrast in Samson’s 2026 season performance is stark when comparing team outcomes. In CSK’s five victories, he has amassed 362 runs across 5 innings with an average of 181 and a strike rate of 178.32. Conversely, in five defeats, he has managed only 40 runs at an average of 8 and a strike rate of 108.1.

‘Hundreds are always special..’: Sanju Samson rues missing century vs DC but puts team above milestone once again

Following another stellar performance, Sanju Samson shared a playful request with his supporters after Chennai Super Kings secured an eight wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2026 encounter on Tuesday. Samson earned the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 87 off 52 deliveries, a knock that steered CSK through a successful chase of 156 with 15 balls to spare. His dominant display featured seven boundaries and six maximums, propelling CSK to 159/2 in 17.3 overs.

Thoughts on the “Chetta” Nickname

During the post match conversation, Samson addressed the “Chetta” nickname adopted by CSK fans throughout the season. The term, a Malayalam word for elder brother, became a popular term of endearment after his significant trade from Rajasthan Royals. With a grin, he remarked:

“Yeah, they are calling me Chetta, but I like Sanju more.”

Insights on Batting Form and Temperament

The cricketer attributed his current success to fundamental discipline and confidence in his instinctive play. He noted that he has spent the previous two to three months refining his initial footwork, which is now yielding results. Regarding his famously composed demeanor, Samson explained that his personality has not shifted, but rather his increased time at the crease has made it more visible to the public.

“To be very honest, I’m always like this. The biggest change is you are seeing me more in the middle now. So I think that’s why people are saying he is very calm. Even when I’m sitting out, I’m just very calm actually. Batting thoda jyada ho raha hai, toh sab dekh rahe hai ha yeh jyada calm hai,”

Prioritizing Team Victory Over Personal Milestones

Despite having already recorded two centuries in the 2026 season, Samson finished just short of another hundred. He emphasized that the satisfaction of finishing the game alongside his partner was more valuable than a personal record.

“Oh, hundreds are always special, sir. I think so. There was some desire, but I was like, I had to be a bit too selfish to get that. So I thought, let’s win the game and the other partner was betting really well, so I didn’t want to tell him ’ek single de de yaar.’ I didn’t say that. So I think really enjoyed. I think coming not out, finishing of the game gives you a better satisfaction. So I just enjoyed it,”

Match Recap

The Delhi Capitals managed a total of 155/7 in 20 overs, supported by efforts from Tristan Stubbs with 38 and Sameer Rizvi with an unbeaten 40. Chennai Super Kings reached the target with ease, bolstered by the partnership between Samson and Kartik Sharma, who remained not out on 41. The CSK bowling attack, including Noor Ahmad, Akeal Hosein, Gurjapneet Singh, Jamie Overton, and Mukesh Chaudhary, played a vital role in restricting the Capitals earlier in the day.

Blame game erupts in DC camp after crushing 8 wickets loss vs CSK; Axar Patel namedrops Kuldeep Yadav

Blame game erupts in DC camp after crushing 8 wickets loss vs CSK; Axar Patel namedrops Kuldeep Yadav

The captain of the Delhi Capitals has shared his reflections on a vital component missing from his team’s bowling strategy following a heavy loss to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. Axar Patel confessed that a lack of synchronization within his spin partnership was a significant factor in the defeat. During the match, Delhi Capitals fell to an eight wicket loss against the Chennai franchise.

Match Analysis: DC vs CSK, Match 48, May 5, 2026

The encounter at the Event Centre concluded with Chennai Super Kings defeating Delhi Capitals by eight wickets. Delhi Capitals posted a total of 155/7, which was surpassed by Chennai Super Kings reaching 159/2.

Key Insights from the Captain

Axar Patel highlighted the importance of his collaboration with Kuldeep Yadav while discussing the team’s struggles. Despite usually being a central figure in the DC bowling attack, Kuldeep Yadav bowled only three overs, giving up 34 runs without claiming a wicket. This left the captain without his usual support during the critical middle overs.

“I thought 155 was a good score but we felt at the end that we were 10-15 short. Once the set batters were playing it was fine, but it was not easy for the new batter. The length ball was holding and also keeping low. The way we batted after losing 5 wickets is a positive. But in bowling I missed my partner in Kuldeep. Now there’s no room for error and we have to win all our 5 remaining matches.”

Game Breakdown: CSK Overwhelms DC’s Modest Total

The Delhi Capitals found difficulty with the bat once more, concluding their 20 overs with a score of 155. A few notable performances helped stabilize the innings after a poor start:

Tristan Stubbs: 38 runs from 31 balls

Sameer Rizvi: 40 runs from 24 balls

Ashutosh Sharma: 14 runs from 5 balls

The Chennai Super Kings bowling unit was spearheaded by Noor Ahmad, who took two wickets. Additional wickets were secured by Akeal Hosein, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, and Jamie Overton.

During the second innings, Chennai Super Kings controlled the pursuit of the target. Sanju Samson led the way with an unbeaten 87, supported by Kartik Sharma who finished 41 not out. For the Delhi Capitals, the only bowlers to find success were Axar Patel (1/25) and Lungi Ngidi (1/30).

Current Standings

Following this result, Delhi Capitals occupy seventh place with four victories and six losses. Chennai Super Kings hold the sixth position, having secured five wins and five losses across ten matches.

Full qoute

“Obviously, the way the wicket was playing in the first innings, I felt that yes, 155 was a good score. But since we were playing with eight batters, I felt we were about 10-15 runs short. I feel it got a little better, but I think the difference was made by the set batter. When a batter is well set, it feels like there is nothing in the pitch, but I still feel there was something in it. For a new batter coming in, it was not easy. Yes, it wasn’t easy for new players because, you know, the length balls were holding up, sometimes staying low, and occasionally even bouncing after holding. So I feel it was very difficult for new batters. But when set batters were playing, it looked easier. You could see the way Sanju took the game forward. Yes, obviously, considering our batting, I think that’s a positive. Even after losing five wickets, the way we finished at the end was good. So yes, that is a positive. But I feel in bowling, I missed my partner Kuldeep. Yes, obviously, we cannot afford any mistakes now. So we have to go in with a clear mindset that whatever time or chances we get, we must win.”
