GoPro Hero 11 Black first impressions: Versatile, easy-to-use action camera

GoPro Hero 11 Black first impressions: Versatile, easy-to-use action camera

The 7 Black (review), launched in 2018, has been my go-to action camera to record adventure strides, scenic landscape time lapses, and fast-moving everyday city life. However, my brief experience with the newly launched 11 Black makes me think of upgrading. Among the reasons to like the new is the new camera sensor of tall 8:7 aspect ratio, support for 10-bit colours, improved performance in extreme environments, and the addition of three new night effects time lapse presets. On top, there are ‘Easy’ and ‘Pro’ controls, cloud-based auto-highlight videos feature, and built-in horizon lock.

The 7 Black is a good action camera in its own right, and so are the two generations that came afterwards. The Hero 11 Black, however, is different for two reasons – it is easy to use and has the potential to reduce dependence on smartphones. Starting with ease of use, the Hero 11 Black has a familiar interface to make existing users feel at home. Besides, there are pre-set configurations to help users make the most from the camera in different environments. This further simplifies the experience and makes everyday use easy and fun. For first time users, there is an option to switch to ‘Easy’ controls, which provides fewer settings and capture choices leaning towards simple point-and-shoot experience.

Familiar interface, easy controls, and pre-set configurations are all in the right direction, but it is the auto-highlight videos and three new night effects time lapse presets that the Hero 11 Black has going for it. Reason being these two features alone reduce dependence on smartphones by a fair margin. The auto-highlight videos feature works in the background to get you social media ready short videos after an eventful day. It cuts the clutter of scrolling through the video feeds, editing, processing, inserting music tracks, etc. and leaves only the fun part for you to play on the smartphone. Thus, it not just reduces dependence on smartphones but also cuts down the screen time significantly.

Next is the three new night effects time lapse presets – light painting, star trails, and vehicle light trails. These have been part of camera experience in smartphones, but a first in a . Not that the previous models were inadequate in capturing such time lapses, but one had to fiddle with a lot many settings to make it work. With the presets available, capturing the light painting, star trails, and vehicle light trails time lapses have become simple, easy and straightforward processes that both amateurs and pro users would appreciate.

The GoPro Hero 11 Black is a major step forward in terms of utility and features, but I will reserve my verdict about the product for in-depth review. It is because I am concerned about the legacy issues with the Hero Black series. My Hero 7 Black struggles in extreme environments. The Hero 9 Black (review) was an improvement, but incremental. GoPro promises better experience in extreme environments with Enduro battery, which ships with the Hero 11 Black. You will know if it is worthy of your money in the review, so stay tuned!

Amazon India rolls out live-stream shopping to drive festive season sales

Amazon India rolls out live-stream shopping to drive festive season sales

(Reuters) – .com Inc on Friday rolled out a live-streaming video feature for promoting products on its shopping platform in India, employing a format already popular in China to drive sales in Asia’s third largest economy.

The company has tied up with social media influencers to host live-streams during which they can interact with customers and also offer limited period deals.

Live-stream shopping events are hugely popular in China, with those on Alibaba Group Holding’s Taobao and Bytedance’s Douyin driving millions of dollars in sales.

YouTube in July also expanded live-stream shopping by permitting eligible creators to link their Shopify Inc profiles, allowing viewers to complete purchases without leaving the video platform.

“With Live launch, we want to make the shopping experience exciting and meaningful for our customers,” said Kishore Thota, director, customer experience and marketing, India.

Google Fiber plans to offer 100 gbps broadband speed for customers

Google Fiber plans to offer 100 gbps broadband speed for customers

Fiber, part of the Access division of Alphabet, is reportedly planning to offer 100 gbps broadband speeds for its consumers in the US.

According to ZDNet, one gigabit speeds, which US incumbents like Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and AT&T could not match, were Fiber’s main selling point to attract users.

This forced incumbents to boost speeds in areas where Fiber was available, but its coverage was limited and remained stagnant for five years until last month, when it revealed plans to expand to five more states.

Now, Google Fiber seems ready to reignite competition. The ISP’s CEO Dinni Jain says he wants to offer affordable access to multi-gig speeds and claims that a colleague recently got 20Gbps download speeds in Kansas City when testing the service, the report said.

“We used to get asked, ‘who needs a gig?’,” Jain was quoted as saying.

“Today it’s no longer a question. Every major provider in the US seems to have now gotten the gigabit memo, and it’s only going up from there – some providers are already offering 2, 5, 8, even 10 gig products,” he added.

Google Fiber currently offers a symmetrical 1gbps service for $70 a month and last year started selling a 2/1Gbps download/upload service for $100 a month, with 1TB of cloud storage.

“In the coming months, we will have announcements to dramatically expand our multi-gigabit tiers. These will be critical milestones on our journey to 100 Gig symmetrical internet,” Jain said.

Android apps now have new voices for Google’s text-to-speech engine

Android apps now have new voices for Google’s text-to-speech engine

Tech giant has announced it is upgrading its text-to-speech (TTS) by speech engine by providing clearer, more natural voices.

The company said that all 421 voices in 67 languages have been upgraded with a new voice model and synthesizer.

“If you already use TTS and the Speech Services by engine, there is nothing to do — everything will happen behind the scenes as your users will have automatically downloaded the latest update. We have seen a significant side by side quality increase with this change, particularly in respect to clarity and naturalness,” the platform said in its developers page.

“With this upgrade we will also be changing the default voice in en-US to one that is built using fresher speaker data, which alongside our new stack, results in a drastic improvement. If your users have not selected a system voice, and you rely on system defaults, they will hear a slightly different speaker,” it added.

This update will be rolling out to all 64 bit devices via the Google Play Store over the next few weeks as a part of the Speech Services by Google apk.

Pegatron starts iPhone factory in Chennai, third such firm in India

Pegatron starts iPhone factory in Chennai, third such firm in India

Taiwan’s Pegatron on Friday became the third Apple vendor to set up a manufacturing unit in India, inaugurating a facility at Mahindra World City in . It will invest around Rs 1,100 crore in the unit, potentially generating around 14,000 jobs.

The other two Apple vendors with units in India are and Wistron, both Taiwanese. Pegatron’s facility comes at a time when Apple is expected to move at least a quarter of its manufacturing facilities to India by 2025. It signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government in February last year.

“The fact that Pegatron has started production within 18 months of signing the MoU highlights the investor-friendly climate in Tamil Nadu. China is where new cell phone models are manufactured in bulk. We are working to change that and make Tamil Nadu such a manufacturing hub,” said Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin.

The electronics major applied for the central government’s production-linked incentive scheme. Tamil Nadu plans to develop Hosur, Coimbatore and Sriperumbudur as electronics manufacturing hubs.

The state contributes to around 20 per cent of the country’s electronics manufacturing. Major players in the state include Samsung, Foxconn, Tata Electronics and Dell among major investors. Stalin said the state is working to improve supply chain.

“Beyond conventional industries, we are showing interest in innovative industries. Under industry 4.0, the electronics sector plays a very important role. It has the power to change the manufacturing map of the state. We are focusing on that,” he said. Early this year, Tamil Nadu jumped to the third place in terms of ease of doing business, compared to 14 last year.

Stalin reiterated the government’s roadmap to achieve the target of a $1 trillion economy. To move towards this, the state is giving special incentives for the manufacturing sector. “In every sector, we are taking efforts to create more employment and boost diversification initiatives,” he added. Apple had started local assembly of iPhones in 2017 and was majorly making old generation phones in India.

A report by JP Morgan said Apple, in a move to diversify its China-focused manufacturing, is looking at making 25 per cent of its handsets in India by 2025 and shifting 5 per cent of global 14 production to India by the end of 2022.
