Google said it has taken a stake in Taiwan’s New Green Power and could buy up to 300 megawatts of renewable energy from the BlackRock fund-owned firm to help cut its carbon emissions and those of suppliers.

Companies are being pushed to cut greenhouse gas emissions linked to their operations and value chains by investors and Big Tech firms have been among the most ambitious in their targets.

Google aims to constantly run on carbon-free energy wherever it operates. Yet sector growth in demand for data-processing capacity to power artificial intelligence has seen emissions jump.

Taiwan, a major site for Google’s cloud technology with a data centre and company offices, still relied on fossil fuels to generate nearly 85 per cent of its power, Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s Global Head of Data Center Energy told Reuters.

“The goal of this investment is really to support the build out of a large-scale solar pipeline in Taiwan,” Corio added.

Regions such as Asia Pacific can be harder to decarbonise due to less developed infrastructure and restrictions limiting the ability of corporate users to buy green power.

New Green Power, owned by a fund managed by BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure business, was one of the leading solar developers and operators in Taiwan, BlackRock’s Global Head of Climate Infrastructure David Giordano told Reuters.

Google and BlackRock both declined to specify the size of the equity stake being taken in NGP, but Corio said the investment was expected to drive the equity and debt financing for the build-out of its 1 gigawatt (GW) pipeline.

Taiwan is targeting 20 GW of solar capacity by 2025 and up to 80 GW by 2050, BlackRock said.

Corio said that as well as using some of the solar power it buys to drive its own operations, Google would also be able to offer some to its suppliers and manufacturers in the region.

Sharing with suppliers would help Google lower its so-called Scope 3 emissions, those tied to its value chain, she added.

WhatsApp launches community-exclusive events feature for group chats

WhatsApp launches community-exclusive events feature for group chats

Notably, WhatsApp ensures that all group events are protected by its end-to-end encryption.

WhatsApp has begun rolling out its highly anticipated events feature for group chats, extending beyond its initial community-focused release last month.

Initially announced as an addition to Communities, this feature is now making its way to regular group chats on the WhatsApp platform, confirmed GSM Arena.

According to reports obtained by GSM Arena, the feature has been spotted in WhatsApp for Android’s beta version 2.24.14.9, marking the beginning of its broader availability.

The update introduces a new “Event” icon accessible through the paperclip menu within group chats, allowing users to seamlessly create and manage events directly within their chat groups.

Once an event is created, members of the group can view and respond to the invitation, while only the event creator retains the ability to modify event details, according to GSM Arena.

Notably, WhatsApp ensures that all group events are protected by its end-to-end encryption, maintaining user privacy and security.

While WhatsApp has not disclosed a definitive timeline for the global rollout of the Events feature across all group chats, users eager to explore this functionality can participate in the beta program for early access.

WhatsApp has introduced some more features to its platform.

Users can also experience larger group video calls and improved business tools after the recent updates.

The biggest change is the increase in the participant limit for group video calls.

Previously capped at eight users, calls can now accommodate up to 32 participants, making it easier for larger groups to connect virtually.

This update applies to both mobile and desktop users.

In addition to the video call improvements, WhatsApp is also rolling out new features powered by Meta AI. These AI tools are designed to enhance the user experience for both individuals and businesses.

One such feature is the expanded availability of AI-powered chat functions. Previously in limited testing, these features are now available in a dozen countries.

Users can experience AI chatbot interactions and even create custom AI stickers.

Businesses on WhatsApp are also getting a boost with the introduction of Meta Verified.

This program aims to provide businesses with a way to showcase their legitimacy and build trust with customers.

Google has begun rolling out an exciting update to its Messages app, integrating Gemini AI to enhance functionality and user interaction directly within chats.

This development follows Google’s recent announcement and the initial introduction of Gemini AI on other platforms like Gmail, according to GSM Arena.

The Gemini AI integration aims to streamline user experience by providing quick access to artificial intelligence capabilities without leaving the Messages app.

Users will notice a new floating action button positioned above the “Start chat” button in the lower-right corner of the interface, facilitating easy access to the AI service.

Although the feature is currently not widely available, Google assures users that Gemini AI functions similarly to its standalone counterpart on Android devices, as per GSM Arena.

This integration allows users to ask questions, receive information, or issue commands seamlessly while continuing their conversations within Messages.

It’s important to note that Gemini AI respects user privacy by not scanning private conversations.

However, interactions with the AI chatbot are not end-to-end encrypted, prompting users to exercise caution when sharing sensitive information.

Google also provides options for users to manage their chat history with Gemini, allowing storage customization from default settings of 18 months up to 36 months or as low as 3 months.

Regarding privacy concerns, Gemini AI does not track user location beyond general details derived from IP addresses or home addresses to provide relevant information.

As the update continues to roll out, users can look forward to enhanced capabilities and streamlined interactions within the Messages app.

Google adds Tulu to its translation services, community says 'great honour'

Google adds Tulu to its translation services, community says 'great honour'

In a significant stride towards preserving and promoting regional languages, Google has added Tulu to its translation services.

Tulu joins 110 new languages on Google Translate from June 27, marking a historic moment for the millions of people who speak this language. This addition allows users to easily translate Tulu words and phrases, enhancing the accessibility and understanding of this cherished language.

The Tulu-speaking community, which has long sought greater recognition for their language, is celebrating this achievement as a major honour, especially since Tulu is not officially recognised in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

While the initial translations for Tulu on Google Translate may contain some errors, the system is expected to improve over time. Users are encouraged to provide accurate translations in the feedback section to help refine and enhance the service’s accuracy.

Google’s inclusion of Tulu leverages advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. This involves a statistical-based method that relies on large amounts of data. For Tulu, approximately 2 million translated sentences, including nouns and verbs, were fed into the system, allowing the machine to learn and improve its translations progressively.

Expressing satisfaction over the new global acclaim of the Tulu language, Tharanath Gatty Kapikad, president of Karnataka State Tulu Academy, told PTI that the Tuluva people must make extensive use of this new global service and take forward the literary heritage of Tulu language.

He said it is natural that there could be some misgivings in translating from one language to another. In such cases, he advised the Tuluvas to use the feedback button on Google translator to correct such misgivings.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily had been a strong votary of inclusion of Tulu language into the Eighth schedule of the Constitution and had taken a delegation to meet various Central leaders to include Tulu language into the Eithth Schedule.

He expressed happiness over the new global recognition given to Tulu language by Google through creating a translation interface with other languages. That means Tulu has gained much more ground on a global scale.

Even non-Tulu speakers in Karnataka may have encountered Tulu phrases through popular Kannada movies such as ‘Ulidavaru Kandanthe,’ ‘Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana,’ and ‘Kantara,’ as well as the Hindi movie ‘Welcome.’

Despite some initial challenges and the need for ongoing refinements, the inclusion of Tulu in Google Translate is a milestone. It paves the way for greater preservation and broader usage of the language. This global recognition not only brings pride to the Tulu-speaking community but also ensures that Tulu remains relevant and vibrant in the digital age.

Tulu has a script of its own but not popularised. The Dharmasthala Museum for art has displayed Tulu script.

Efforts are on at the national level to include Tulu into the Eighth Schedule of the constitution. Tulu is also a language of entry for TOEFL examination.

Kuppam University in Andhra Pradesh has a chair for Tulu development. Tuluva scholars like Prof. Viveka Rai, late Amrut Someshwara and late K S Haridas Bhat recognised Tulu as one of the ‘Pancha Dravida Bhasha’ – Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tulu.

Microsoft's billion investment into OpenAI faces extra EU scrutiny

Microsoft's $13 billion investment into OpenAI faces extra EU scrutiny

Under the terms of Microsoft’s arrangement with OpenAI, Microsoft’s Azure is the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI — something that EU regulators want to examine more.

By Samuel Stolton

Microsoft Corp.’s $13 billion investment into OpenAI Inc. is set to come under added scrutiny from European Union’s antitrust watchdogs, who are poised to quiz rivals about the AI firm’s exclusive use of Microsoft’s cloud technology.

Margrethe Vestager, the bloc’s antitrust chief, announced Friday that the EU has ruled out an investigation under the EU’s merger rules into the deal. Instead, she announced that regulators are asking Microsoft’s rivals about the US company’s exclusivity clauses with OpenAI, and whether they might have a negative effect on competition.

Bloomberg reported the news earlier.

As well as the focus on Microsoft, the EU will also circulate questions to the market on Google’s arrangement with Samsung Electronics Co. to pre-install its small model “Gemini nano” on certain devices.

Vestager added in a speech that regulators are examining attempts by Big Tech to buy firms by way of mass hires. The EU preliminary step comes after the US Federal Trade Commission launched investigations into Microsoft’s hiring of Inflection staff.

“We will make sure these practices don’t slip through our merger control rules if they basically lead to a concentration,” Vestager said.

Under the terms of Microsoft’s arrangement with OpenAI, Microsoft’s Azure is the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI — something that EU regulators want to examine more.

Such preliminary questions from the EU can sometimes lead to formal investigations from the EU’s antitrust regulators. These probes — in the long run — can result in orders to change behavior and potential fines if watchdogs unearth evidence of abusive practices hampering fair competition.

“We appreciate the European Commission’s thorough review and its conclusion that Microsoft’s investment and partnership with OpenAI does not give Microsoft control over the company,” Microsoft said. “We stand ready to respond to any additional questions the EC may have.”

OpenAI

The EU’s antitrust arm said in January it was reviewing whether Microsoft’s involvement with OpenAI should be vetted after a mutiny at the ChatGPT creator exposed deep ties between the two firms.

The partnership first piqued the interest of regulators — including, as well as the EU, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority and the US Federal Trade Commission — since a scandal embroiled the AI firm over the firing and subsequent rehiring of Sam Altman as chief of OpenAI late last year.

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella personally helped negotiate and advocate for his return to the company — at one point offering to hire Altman himself, along with other employees at OpenAI who wanted to leave.

OpenAI’s board eventually agreed to reinstate Altman and the company then named a three-person interim board and added Microsoft as a non-voting observer.

That episode led regulators to examine the agreement. The UK watchdog said it would examine whether the balance of power between the two firms has fundamentally shifted to give one side more control or influence over the other, and the US Federal Trade Commission has made inquiries into the agreement.

At the core of the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI is the massive amounts of computer power required to keep the worldwide boom in generative AI going. Running the systems behind tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s Bard has sent demand for cloud services and processing capacity soaring. OpenAI, for example, has become a major customer of Microsoft’s cloud business.

Under the EU’s merger rules, officials vet deals under strict time frames and often push for remedies to allay specific competition concerns. While deals are in rare cases vetoed, firms generally don’t face punishments unless they mislead regulators or stymie the process.

The EU’s classic competition law is generally used to home in on potentially anti-competitive agreements between firms and also cases where powerful players abuse their dominance. If wrongdoing is found, fines can rise to 10% of a company’s revenue.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft is no stranger to EU antitrust scrutiny and in previous decades fought a long battle with regulators over abuses linked to the market dominance of Windows.

This week the EU accused the company of abusing its market power by bundling the Teams video-conferencing app to its other business software.
