What is Airchat, an audio-first social media app with Twitter-like feed

What is Airchat, an audio-first social media app with Twitter-like feed

Airchat is the latest social media platform that has created a buzz in the technology world. Founded by AngelList founder Naval Ravikant and Tinder co-founder Brian Norgard, Airchat is an audio-first social media platform similar to Clubhouse, but with a Twitter-like content feed for a familiar experience.

Since Airchat is an audio-first platform, it shows audio posts in a feed together with transcribed text that gets processed in real-time. Therefore, users can either choose to listen to the audio post or follow the transcribed text.

How to get Airchat

Currently, the app is limited to invites only, which essentially means a new user can only get on board if he or she has an invite from an existing user. However, the app is available to download on both Android and iOS devices through Google Play Store and App Store, respectively.

Once downloaded, you can allow the app to access your contact list, which it scans and lets you know who among your contacts has already signed up for Airchat. You can then send a request to them for the invite.

Why an audio-based platform

A combination of voice and text offers a more personalised experience on the platform, compared to others such as X (formerly Twitter), Threads, and more. Additionally, the platform caters to users who prefer sharing voice notes rather than typing long text messages.

How to post on Airchat

If you have the invite and want to get started, simply log in and tap on the microphone icon within the app and start speaking. The app automatically transcribes the audio in real-time. Once done, you can publish the audio post that is then presented to the feed in the form of a text post. Followers get the option to listen to the audio while scrolling the feed. Additionally, users can reply to posts using audio notes as well.

The prospect of sharing voice on a public platform might sound scary, but the platform allows re-recording multiple times until the user is comfortable and confident enough to share the post. Advanced features such as noise reduction and isolation are currently not supported by the platform.

Huawei starts sales of Pura 70 smartphone in China amid chips scrutiny

Huawei starts sales of Pura 70 smartphone in China amid chips scrutiny

Chinese technology giant Huawei started selling two models of its highly anticipated, high-end Pura 70 smartphone series on Thursday that many analysts expect to contain an advanced China-made chip like its Mate 60 handset.

The Pura series developed by the Shenzhen-headquartered company has advanced cameras and is known for its sleek design, while the Mate series emphasises performance and business features.

The launch of Huawei’s Mate 60 series last year was celebrated by Chinese state media as a triumph over U.S.

sanctions on the firm, as the handsets contain an advanced China-made chip that is considered only a few generations behind cutting-edge chips used by Western tech giants like Apple and Google in terms of computing power.

Eric Xu, Huawei’s acting chairman, on Wednesday told a forum in Shenzhen that the company also plans to roll out a Mate 70 smartphone this year.

The Pro and Ultra versions of the Pura 70 were available on Thursday, while the Plus and base versions will begin sales on April 22. The phones were out of stock at Huawei’s official online store just a minute after sales started, and hundreds of the brand’s fans lined up at Huawei stores in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

One customer, Lucas Zhuang, tested the network speed of the Pura 70 and said it was at the level of 5G. Washington has banned the licensing of 5G chips to China but Huawei’s Mate 60 phones were already able to achieve 5G speed in many cases despite Huawei not branding it as 5G.

“We didn’t know what chip the Pura 70 has inside. We only found out after we bought it,” Zhuang, who already owns the Mate 60, told Reuters after waiting in line at Huawei’s flagship store in Shanghai.

“But we believe … the chip it has will certainly meet people’s needs.”

Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at research firm Counterpoint, said he expected shipments of about 60 million units from Huawei this year, with the Pura 70 series being an important catalyst. Last year, Huawei sold about 32 million smartphones.

“There may be some shortage at various channels but supply will be much better compared to when the Mate 60 was launched. We don’t expect any longlasting shortage,” he said.

The Pura 70 series has four variants: the 70, the 70 Plus, the 70 Pro and the 70 Ultra. The starting price for the Pura 70 series is 5,499 yuan ($760.06).

Chip challenge

The launch of the Mate 60 Pro last August sparked a spike in Huawei’s smartphone sales. According to Counterpoint, in the first six weeks of 2024, Huawei saw unit sales rise by 64% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone sales in China fell 24% during the same period.

Huawei’s Kirin 9000S chip was reportedly manufactured by China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) despite U.S. export restrictions seeking to limit Beijing’s chip-making capabilities.

It was seen as a symbol of China’s technological resurgence despite Washington’s ongoing efforts to cripple its capacity to produce advanced semiconductors.

The Biden administration began a review of the chip earlier this year and said last month that SMIC might have violated U.S export rules, while adding it was still evaluating the situation.

Besides targeting China’s chip manufacturers, the U.S. has imposed trade restrictions on Huawei since 2018, viewing the company and its products as a national security risk, which the company denies.

Elaborating on the pending Mate 70 smartphones on Tuesday, Xu said the goal is for it to use a “pure” version of its HarmonyOS operating system, developed in 2019 after U.S. sanctions cut Huawei’s access to U.S. technologies such as Google’s Android.

HarmonyOS had still been reliant on the Android application ecosystem but Huawei plans to cut that relationship and make HarmonyOS completely independent and able to compete with Apple’s iOS and Android, he added.

Apple mulls changing display size on iPhone Plus, Pro lines by 2025: Report

Apple mulls changing display size on iPhone Plus, Pro lines by 2025: Report

Representative Image: iPhone 15 Plus

Apple is reportedly planning to change the screen size on iPhone Plus and Pro models by 2025. According to a report by Android Authority, citing analyst Ross Young, the 2025 iPhone Plus could sport a smaller-sized display compared to its predecessors. The iPhone Plus models from 2025 onwards would have a screen size bigger than the vanilla iPhone model and iPhone Pro model, but smaller than that of the iPhone Pro Max, the report added.

The current generation iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro sport a 6.1-inch display, and the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max sport a 6.7-inch display.

With this move, Apple would likely add to the appeal of the iPhone Pro Max model. In other reports, Apple would likely change the display size on the iPhone Pro line this year itself. The 2024 iPhone Pro and Pro Max models are reported to sport a 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display, respectively.

Apart from the changes in screen sizes, Apple is reported to use LTPO OLED display panels across all models from 2025. It essentially means all iPhone models in 2025 and onwards would support a higher refresh rate. For reference, the baseline models in the current iPhone 15 series have OLED displays but of 60Hz refresh rate. The higher refresh rate display, 120Hz, is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models.

It is customary for Apple to launch the iPhones in September. That said, the iPhone 16 series is expected to launch globally in September this year. This year’s model will likely get minor improvements in terms of hardware but is expected to get a major software bump with the iOS 18 operating system, which is said to bring AI features. While the wait for the iPhone may extend until September, details on the iOS 18 would be out sooner as Apple is hosting its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 10 where it would delve into details about the new features and tools it would bring to iPhones with the next-generation operating system.

Maestro: Amazon Music tests AI-generated playlist feature on Android, iOS

Maestro: Amazon Music tests AI-generated playlist feature on Android, iOS

US-based e-commerce platform Amazon’s music streaming service, Amazon Music, has announced Maestro – an AI-powered feature to generate playlists based on prompts. Currently in beta and exclusive to a limited subset of consumers in the US only, the feature is available across free, Prime, and Unlimited plans on both Android and iOS.

Amazon Music said its AI playlist generator, Maestro, can create playlists from a prompt, which could be in the form of text, emojis, emotions, activities, and sounds. The generated playlist can be saved and shared with friends back and forth.

Prime members and ad-supported customers can listen to a 30-second preview of the playlist before saving it, but the Unlimited tier subscribers can listen to the playlist instantly.

According to Amazon Music, Maestro is a work in progress and it may not always get things right in the first attempt. The platform will block offensive language and inappropriate prompts, said Amazon Music in a statement.

How to use Amazon Music Maestro to generate playlists

  • Download the latest version of the Amazon Music mobile app

  • Beta members will see Maestro either on the Amazon Music home screen or when they tap the plus sign where they usually create a new playlist

  • Speak or type the playlist idea and tap “Let’s go!” to generate the playlist

  • Once done, you can save and share the generated playlist with others

Recently, Spotify announced testing a similar AI-generated playlist feature. On the Swedish music streaming platform, playlists can be created using prompts that contain a combination of genres, moods, artists, or decades.

Delta Emulator comes to Apple App Store: How to play retro games on iPhones

Delta Emulator comes to Apple App Store: How to play retro games on iPhones

Delta Game Emulator on iPhone

Delta video game emulator is now available on iPhones in India through Apple’s App Store. It is among the first video game emulators to get listed on the App Store. The emulator for iPhone supports multiple gaming platforms such as Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Nintendo 64, Game Boy colour, and more.

Apple earlier announced that it will allow video game emulator applications on iPhones through its App Store. With this move, Apple has opened its iPhone ecosystem to run retro gaming console emulators, allowing iPhone users to play older-generation video games from the likes of Nintendo, Mitashi, and more.

Delta Game Emulator: Requirements

Delta Game Emulator is available on the Apple App Store for both iPhones and Macs.

  • File size: 68MB

  • iPhone: Requires iOS 14.0 or later

  • Mac: Requires macOS 11.0 or later and Apple M1 chip or later

Delta Game Emulator: Compatibility

Delta is capable of emulating multiple gaming systems and consoles within its app. Here is a list of all the supported game systems within the app-

  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

  • Nintendo 64

  • Game Boy (Colour)

  • Game Boy Advance

  • Nintendo DS

While the app has on-display controls and multiple options to customise the emulator layout, there is also support for third-party Bluetooth gaming controllers, including Sony PlayStation controllers, Xbox One S controllers, and more.

Delta Game Emulator: How to use

Playing games on emulator apps requires ROMs of compatible video games. ROMs are essentially files that contain virtual copies of the game’s data. There are multiple ways to get a game’s ROM file. You can use physical tools like “GB Operators”, which allow connecting older-generation video game cartridges to your computer or smartphone. Multiple third-party websites provide ROM files for select games.

  • Once you have downloaded or stored a ROM file of a game to your iPhone, open the Delta Game Emulator and tap on the “+” button on the top right section of the screen.

  • Select “Files” or any other source where you have stored the ROM file.

  • Select the ROM file of the game you want to play on the emulator and tap on open.

  • Tap on the video game icon within the Delta Emulator and start playing

The app segregates the games available based on the Gaming system they belong to. For example, playable games from the SNES console will be presented in a different section than the games from the Nintendo DS. You can simply swipe on the homepage to browse every section.
