Musk launches X's 'Community Notes' programme in India: Here's how it works

Elon Musk‘s micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter) announced the launch of its “Community Notes” programme in India on Thursday. The platform said that this programme will allow users to participate in fact-checking tweets shared on the platform, creating a more informed digital environment.

X’s affiliate handle, Community Notes said: “Welcome new contributors in India. Our first contributors are joining today, and we’ll be expanding over time. As always, we’ll monitor quality to ensure that notes are found helpful by people from different points of view. Community Notes now has contributors in 69 countries around the world, and we’re adding more regularly…”

According to X, “Community Notes” will help “combat misinformation by enlisting individuals from diverse backgrounds as note authors, and the platform refrains from endorsing any specific viewpoint, instead relying on the collective input of contributors to assess content credibility.”

Essential guidelines to become a contributor

To become a contributor to “Community Notes”, accounts must meet specific criteria outlined by X such as having no recent violations of X’s rules, being a member of X for at least six months, and having a verified phone number from a trusted carrier not associated with other “Community Notes” accounts.

Steps to become a contributor to “Community Notes”

-Click on the menu on a post’s top right and select “Write a Community Note”

-Answer required multiple-choice questions

-Provide contextual information

-A note will be available on the “Community Notes” site for other contributors to read and rate

The notes claiming that a post is misleading will be eligible to be shown on the post if rated as helpful by enough people. Notes claiming a post is not misleading will be shown as additional information but will not be displayed on the post if they earn a status of “Helpful”. If a note earns the status of “Helpful”, it will be shown on X as context, and the contributor will then earn “Writing Impact”. Contributors have the option to delete their notes at any time.

According to X, there is a restriction on the number of note proposals a user can submit within a 24-hour period in order to maintain the quality of notes and prevent spams.

Google to make generative AI-powered search exclusive to paid-tier: Report

Google to make generative AI-powered search exclusive to paid-tier: Report

Google is reportedly planning to make the Search Generative Experience (SGE), its generative AI-powered search tool, exclusive to paid-tier. According to a report by the Financial Times, Google is considering charging for generative AI features for Search, including the experimental AI-powered search service.

According to the report, Google’s traditional search service will remain free to use, and the generative AI search experience will be added to its premium subscription services, which already offer access to Gemini Advanced and AI-powered tools for services like Gmail and Docs. However, it is likely that the company will run ads in search results, irrespective of the subscription.

In a statement to the Financial Times, Google said, “With our generative AI experiments in Search, we’ve already served billions of queries, and we’re seeing positive Search query growth in all of our major markets. We’re continuing to rapidly improve the product to serve new user needs.” However,  the company added that there are currently no new announcements from their side.

Additionally, the company stated that they are ““not working on or considering” to make the Search ad-free and that it would “continue to build new premium capabilities and services to enhance our subscription offerings across Google”.

Google launched the AI-powered SGE in August last year and it has since remained available to users as an opt-in experiment in Google’s Search Lab. Once enabled, SGE provides relevant information upfront on the search page, instead of showing links of multiple websites that may have information related to search queries and keywords. It generates an AI-powered overview of key information along with relevant links that point to the source of information.

Google Search Generative Experience

The report states that this kind of Search experience that includes an AI-powered overview, costs more to Google as generative AI consumes a lot more computing resources. Additionally, many online publishers who depend on Google for traffic on their websites have shown concern as they expect fewer visitors due to information being presented directly on the search result. Making SGE exclusive to the paid-tier might solve both of these issues for Google.

Nothing to launch Ear 3 on Apr 18, two smartphones in pipeline too: Details

Nothing to launch Ear 3 on Apr 18, two smartphones in pipeline too: Details

Representative Image: Nothing Ear 2 wireless earbuds

Nothing has announced that it will be unveiling something new in its next community update on April 18. While the British consumer technology brand has not confirmed the product or the product line that the device would be part of, the teaser image share by the brand hints at an audio accessory – likely to be the Nothing Ear 3 wireless earbuds.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the company shared a picture of a beetle and a frog along with a caption “Play Date”. The post reads, “Want to hear more? Don’t miss our next Community Update.” This is not the first time that Nothing has used an image of a beetle to tease a new product. Last year, the company used an image of the same ahead of the launch for Nothing Ear (2). Similarly, an image of a ladybug was used for the marketing campaign of the Nothing Ear (1) earbuds.

As the company continues with the bug theme, it is likely that Nothing will launch an audio device on April 18.

The April 18 announcement would be followed by smartphone launch in later months. Consumer technology news platform 9To5Google has reported that Nothing is planning to release two smartphones this year, excluding the recently launched Nothing Phone (2a). The smartphones are reportedly in the works and referred to as PacmanPro and Tetris internally.

According to 9To5Google, the Nothing Phone (2a) was codenamed Pacman prior to its launch, suggesting that the “PacmanPro” will be a variant of the recently launched mid-range smartphone by Nothing.

Earlier, Nothing announced “The Community Edition Project” inviting its community members to participate in designing, packaging, and customising a version of Phone (2a) smartphone. It is likely that “PacmanPro” codenamed smartphone will be this Community Edition variant of the Nothing Phone (2a). The other smartphone, codenamed “Tetris”, is expected to be the next-generation flagship smartphone by the company, likely to be called the Nothing Phone (3).

Apple explores home robotics as 'next big thing' after car fizzles

Apple explores home robotics as 'next big thing' after car fizzles

By Mark Gurman

Apple Inc. has teams investigating a push into personal robotics, a field with the potential to become one of the company’s ever-shifting “next big things,” according to people familiar with the situation.

Engineers at Apple have been exploring a mobile robot that can follow users around their homes, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the skunk-works project is private. The iPhone maker also has developed an advanced table-top home device that uses robotics to move a display around, they said.

Though the effort is still in the beginning stages — and it’s unclear if the products will ultimately be released — Apple is under growing pressure to find new sources of revenue. It scrapped an electric vehicle project in February, and a push into mixed-reality goggles is expected to take years to become a major moneymaker.

With robotics, Apple could gain a bigger foothold in consumers’ homes and capitalize on advances in artificial intelligence. But it’s not yet clear what approach it might take. Though the robotic smart display is much further along than the mobile bot, it has been added and removed from the company’s product road map over the years, according to the people.

Chart

The robotics work is happening within Apple’s hardware engineering division and its AI and machine-learning group, which is run by John Giannandrea. Matt Costello and Brian Lynch — two executives focused on home products — have overseen the hardware development. Still, Apple hasn’t committed to either project as a company, and the work is still considered to be in the early research phase. A spokeswoman declined to comment.

Apple investors reacted coolly to the news, with the stock paring earlier gains after Bloomberg reported on the robotics work. It was up less than 1 per cent at $169.65 at the close in New York. Shares of Roomba maker iRobot Corp., meanwhile, briefly jumped as much as 17 per cent — a sign investors thought it might benefit from Apple’s interest in the field. But the rally faded, and the stock gained less than 2 per cent by the close.

Before the EV project was canceled, Apple told its top executives that the company’s future revolved around three areas: automotive, the home and mixed reality. But now the car isn’t happening and Apple has already released its first mixed-reality product, the Vision Pro headset. So the focus has shifted to other future opportunities, including how Apple can better compete in the smart home market.

The table-top robotics project first excited senior Apple executives a few years ago, including hardware engineering chief John Ternus and members of the industrial design team. The idea was to have the display mimic the head movements — such as nodding — of a person on a FaceTime session. It would also have features to precisely lock on to a single person among a crowd during a video call.

But the company has been concerned about whether consumers would be willing to pay top dollar for such a device. There have also been technical challenges related to balancing the weight of a robotic motor on a small stand. The primary obstacle has been disagreement among Apple executives over whether to move forward with the product at all, according to the people.

Near its campus in Cupertino, California, Apple has a secret facility that resembles the inside of a house — a site where it can test future devices and initiatives for the home. Apple has been exploring other ideas for that market, including a new home hub device with an iPad-like display.

Apple, Apple AI, Apple Inc

Apple’s pursuit of the “next big thing” has been an obsession since the Steve Jobs era. But it’s become harder to envision a product that could ever match the iPhone, which accounted for 52 per cent of the company’s $383.3 billion in sales last year.

A car had the potential to add hundreds of billions of dollars to Apple’s revenue, in part because the vehicles were expected to sell for roughly $100,000 a pop. Few other products have that kind of growth potential, but Apple has a number of projects in the works, including an updated Vision Pro, touch-screen Macs, AirPods with built-in cameras, and new health technologies like a noninvasive blood sugar monitor.

Artificial intelligence is another major focus, even if Apple is playing catch-up in the realm of chatbots and other generative technology. That’s where there could be some overlap with the robotics work. While still in the earliest stages, Apple AI researchers are investigating the use of algorithms to help bots navigate cluttered spaces within people’s homes.

If the work advances, Apple wouldn’t be the first tech giant to develop a home robot. Amazon.com Inc. introduced a model called Astro in 2021 that currently costs $1,600. But the company was slow to offer the device in major quantities, and it remains a niche product. The company debuted a more business-focused version of the rolling bot last year designed to work as a security guard.

Perhaps the most popular home robot remains the Roomba vacuum, which debuted more than two decades ago. Amazon agreed to acquire iRobot in 2022, but regulatory opposition ultimately doomed the deal. Other companies have also presented the idea of humanoid robots that mimic the size and movements of people.

A silver lining to Apple’s failed car endeavor is that it provided the underpinnings for other initiatives. The neural engine — the company’s AI chip inside of iPhones and Macs — was originally developed for the car. The project also laid the groundwork for the Vision Pro because Apple investigated the use of virtual reality while driving.

The robot work got a similar start, originating within Apple’s Titan car project around 2019. That’s when the effort was run by Doug Field, now a top EV executive at Ford Motor Co.

At the time, Field tapped a series of executives to work on robotics initiatives, ranging from nearly silent indoor drones to home robots. The group included Lynch; Nick Sims, a former Google home products manager; and Dave Scott, who left Apple in 2021 to briefly run a mobile MRI machine company and then returned in 2022 to work on the Vision Pro. Hanns Wolfram Tappeiner, the co-founder of AI and robotics company Anki, is also involved.

Soon after Field left Apple in 2021, the robotics work was shifted to the home devices group. And at least one former hardware team from the shuttered car project was recently repurposed to the work on home devices and robotics. The car’s operating system — dubbed by some as safetyOS — could also theoretically be tailored for robots, according to people familiar with the effort.

The original concept for the robot was a device that could navigate entirely on its own without human intervention — like the car — and serve as a videoconferencing tool. One pie-in-the-sky idea within Apple was having it be able to handle chores, like cleaning dishes in a sink. But that would require overcoming extraordinarily difficult engineering challenges — something that’s unlikely this decade.

On its website, Apple is advertising for robotics-related roles, indicating that it’s trying to expand the teams working on the project.

“Our team works at the intersection of modern machine learning and robotics to shape the AI that will power the next generation of Apple products,” according to the description of one job. “We are looking for innovative and hardworking ML and robotics researchers and engineers that help us research, define, and develop complex intelligent robotic systems and experiences in the real world.”

AI would be the game-changer for PC segment: HP's Ipsita Dasgupta

AI would be the game-changer for PC segment: HP's Ipsita Dasgupta

At a time when India’s personal computer (PC) market has begun to show signs of recovery after a year of sluggish demand and declining shipments, global PC maker HP believes that artificial intelligence could well be the game changer for this segment.

The recently appointed managing director and senior vice president of HP India, Ipsita Dasgupta feels that AI would be a “game changer” in creating more consumer demand.

“As AI becomes a significant part of everything we do, the AI-enhanced PC plays an enormous role in what is going to be the most transformational thing that’s happened since telephony,” Dasgupta told Business Standard.

She added that the opportunity for growth in India is massive, given the low PC penetration rate of around 20 per cent. “We believe, in the next five years, the total addressable market (TAM) will double,” she said.

HP, on Wednesday, announced the launch of its AI-enhanced OMEN Transcend 14 laptop series in India, crafted for gamers who indulge in both playing and creating content.

The company’s next phase of growth is expected to come from segments like education, and SMBs.

“There was softness in the market last year, and much of it was in the consumer segment… The opportunity, when there is softness, is to think of the future. And there is no question that the future is going to grow,” said Dasgupta.

HP is also looking to expand into tier 3 and beyond regions. To cater to consumers in smaller cities, the company has been ramping up its offline retail presence. It currently has over 770 exclusive HP World stores, and around 4,000 retail outlets in 425 cities. Of the 770 exclusive HP World stores, 100 were added in 2023.

India’s PC market, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, declined 6.6 per cent year-on-year to 13.9 million shipments in the calendar year 2023, according to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Shipments across both commercial and consumer segments saw a sharp decline primarily due to slowing demand, low market sentiment and reduced procurement by enterprises and SMEs.

HP, which has maintained its top spot in the PC market since 2016, led the market with a share of 31.5 per cent last year, with a strong showing in both the consumer and commercial segments.

The company has also witnessed a strong start to the new year, Dasgupta added.

“We saw quite a bit of pickup in the first quarter in the government segment. But this will go down significantly as the elections are coming up. We have, however, anticipated that and prepared for it,” she said.

The PC market rebounded in the second half of last year, with 12.9 per cent YoY growth after a weak first half. However, the decision on import regulations, improving market sentiment, and an aggressive push from vendors ensured a market recovery in the second half of 2023, according to analysts.

HP is also among many other PC makers vying to expand its manufacturing footprint in India via the IT Hardware PLI 2.0. The company is expected to begin local production under the PLI mid-next year.
