Alphabet's Moonshot X Lab cuts staff, looks for outside investors

Alphabet's Moonshot X Lab cuts staff, looks for outside investors

By Julia Love

Alphabet Inc.’s lab for pioneering technology is laying off dozens of employees as it turns to outside investors to help fund its ventures.

The division, known as X, has in recent months ramped up discussions on funding with venture capitalists and other investors, according to people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be named as it is private. The lab is adopting a new structure that’ll enable its projects to more easily spin out of X as independent startups with support from Alphabet and outside backers, according to one of the people and an email to staff obtained by Bloomberg.

X seeks bold approaches to major challenges like climate change and connectivity, but its efforts have yielded few durable businesses thus far.

“We’re expanding our approach to focus on spinning out more projects as independent companies funded through market-based capital,” Astro Teller, who leads to lab, wrote in the email. “We’ll do this by opening our scope to collaborate with a broader base of industry and financial partners, and by continuing to emphasize lean teams and capital efficiency.”

As part of the restructuring, X is laying off dozens of employees, according to one of the people with knowledge of the matter. The layoffs are focused on support staff, the person said. Alphabet didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.

Launched by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, X has captured the public imagination by pursuing projects from self-driving cars to high-altitude balloons that connect remote communities to the internet. But in recent years the lab has come under more pressure to show that it can turn its speculative bets into profitable businesses, and Alphabet as a whole is waging a campaign to cut costs.

This month, Google eliminated hundreds of jobs on teams including hardware and engineering, with more cuts potentially on the way as it sharpens its focus on artificial intelligence. Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat, who has sought to instill greater financial discipline, is moving into a new role as president and chief investment officer, in which she will oversee a division that includes X.

“She will put more heat into the kitchen and help drive success and viable businesses,” Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, wrote in an email.

Since Google reorganized itself as a conglomerate in 2015, X’s moonshots have sought to “graduate” as Other Bets, or independent ventures under the banner of parent company Alphabet. But Alphabet could only accommodate so many Other Bets, creating a bottleneck for X ventures that were ready to take the next step, according to one of the people with knowledge of the matter. Startups within X often faced a choice between waiting for a spot to open up or striking out on their own.

X employees had explored raising outside capital for their ventures in the past, but they ran into concerns from Alphabet leadership, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

In addition to seeking venture capital, X has met with family offices, sovereign wealth funds, private equity firms and strategic investors, or companies operating in the same industries that the moonshots are targeting, according to the people.

Silicon Valley’s innovation labs have come under threat in a time of layoffs and budget cuts. Last year, Google slashed most jobs at Area 120, an in-house startup incubator. X cut some jobs last year but has refrained from making more significant changes until now.

“This approach will give us more opportunity to focus on what Xers do best: inventing breakthrough technologies to help solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” Teller wrote in the note to staff. “Because the world needs moonshots more now than ever.”

Instagram, Facebook users will get more choices to comply with DMA: Meta

Instagram, Facebook users will get more choices to comply with DMA: Meta

Instagram and Facebook users in Europe will be offered more choices on how they use Meta Platforms’ services to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the social media company said on Monday.

The world’s largest social network is the latest to make changes to comply with the DMA after Google outlined efforts to comply with the new EU technology rules that could hurt revenues for some companies.

Over the next few weeks, users will receive notifications informing them that they can choose whether they would like to share their information between its services, Meta said in a blog post.

Under the DMA, which Meta will have to comply with by March 7, companies are obligated to treat their own services and products the way they treat those of rivals.

Most Apple Vision Pro apps to run repurposed iPad versions without redesign

Most Apple Vision Pro apps to run repurposed iPad versions without redesign

Majority of apps running on Apple‘s upcoming Vision Pro headset will be iPad versions, rather than new software designed for visionOS, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In his report on Bloomberg, Gurman said, apps listed for iPad will be automatically available for the visionOS app store, unless the developers choose to opt-out.
His report also stated that many popular streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube and Spotify have decided to opt-out for providing a dedicated app for visionOS, handing a big blow to Apple which is advertising its upcoming mixed-reality headset as an entertainment device. Other key developers such as Google and Meta platforms have also opted-out, meaning Vision Pro users will have to access these services through web browsers.

According to Gurman, Apple itself is not redesigning all of its apps for the headset. Apple’s own Podcasts, News, Calendar, Reminders and other apps will run in their iPad versions on the headset without any redesign and optimisation.

According to the report, building software for visionOS is expensive and some developers want to wait to see how successful the Vision Pro headset is before committing to a new application. Another reason is that few developers feel that their application does not translate well to the visionOS mixed-reality environment, which relies heavily on gestures and eye movements. Some developers are also complaining about Apple’s App Store review policies, fees and other practices, and do not wish to help the company market its device.

Meanwhile, Apple has confirmed that the Vision Pro headset will support up to 1080p AirPlay for mirroring your view in Apple Vision Pro to any AirPlay??’enabled device, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV (2nd generation or later), or AirPlay??’enabled smart TV.

Apple Vision Pro: Specification

  • Processor: M2 chip

  • Display: 2x micro-OLED. 23 million-pixel count, R1 chip (for refresh rates), Dolby Vision

  • Audio: 2x dual-driver audio pods, Spatial Audio, Dolby Atmos, Lossless Audio, audio ray-tracing

  • OS: visionOS

  • Battery: 2.5 hours of video playback (according to Apple), USB-C charging

Apple likely to bring new iPad and MacBook models by April: Details here

Apple likely to bring new iPad and MacBook models by April: Details here

Representative Image: Apple iPad Air 2022

Apple is expected to unveil a new iPad Air, iPad Pro and MacBook Air in spring this year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the devices would likely be released at the end of March or early April. Here is a roundup of the devices expected and the update they would bring:

iPad Air: Expected changes

The iPad Air 2024 model is expected to feature a larger 12.9-inch display, compared to the 10.9-inch on the current generation. The upcoming iPad Air model is expected to be powered by the M2 chip. In terms of design, the iPad will retain the frame as well as the housing of the current model. However, the camera module may be redesigned with a rectangular camera bump housing the sensor as well as a flash. Other notable features may include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support.

iPad Pro: Expected changes

The iPad Pro 2024 may come in two display sizes – 11-inch and 13-inch. The 2024 iPad Pro would likely be the first to sport an OLED panel. The OLED display would allow the Pro models to feature variable refresh rates, which is likely to reach as low as 10Hz – compared to 24Hz on the predecessor. The iPad Pro is expected to be powered by an M3 chip and support MagSafe wireless charging. Similar to the iPad Air, the new Pro models will likely get a redesigned camera module.

MacBook Air: Expected changes

Apple will likely upgrade the MacBook Air with the M3 chip and add support for Wi-Fi 6E. No major design changes are expected for the upcoming MacBook Air model.
