Samsung Galaxy Ring will feature 'leading sensors and technologies': Report

Samsung teased its upcoming Galaxy Ring at the Unpacked event it recently hosted in San Jose, California, US. The South Korean described it as a “powerful and accessible” health and fitness device that is set to arrive later this year. Now, a report by The Verge brings details on what to expect from the device.

Samsung’s spokesperson Amber Reaver in an email to The Verge said that the upcoming Galaxy Ring is aimed at “empowering more people to manage their health with a comprehensive yet simplified approach to everyday wellness at home.” Reaver also said that the ring will feature “leading sensor technologies” while being comfortable to wear all day.

The teaser video during the event showcased the Galaxy Ring with a smooth metallic finish on the outside and multiple sensors on the inside. The Verge stated that analyst Avi Greengart, who got a chance to see the Galaxy Ring prototype at the event, said that the smart ring is lightweight and comes in three finishes and sizes up to 13. According to Greengart the device will launch later this year.

Last year, it was reported that a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) said that a new smart device with a trademark name ‘Galaxy Ring’  will collect and measure health data and sleep patterns. The report also stated that the Galaxy Ring would be capable of monitoring heart rate, sleep quality, and track physical activities similar to the Galaxy Watch.

MHA think tank alerts against 'hijack', sextortion scams on WhatsApp

MHA think tank alerts against 'hijack', sextortion scams on WhatsApp

The communication expressed a particular concern about a recently released feature of ‘screen share’ by WhatsApp

A police think tank that functions under the union home ministry has issued an advisory and alert against a variety of scams that take place on popular social media messaging platform WhatsApp leading to cyber crimes and financial frauds.

The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) has identified seven types of such frauds that includes tricking through missed calls, video calls, in the name of job offers and investment plans, impersonation, hijacking and screen share.

As part of the ‘hijacking’ scam, the eight page advisory-cum-alert said, the scammers take unauthorised access to the victim’s WhatsApp (WA) account and request money from their contacts.

“Some people also witnessed WhatsApp video calls from unknown numbers. These were basically sextortion-based nude video calls which were then used to threaten the user.”

“The hackers blackmail the user and ask for money in return,” the BPRD said in the communication accessed by PTI.

The BPRD is a think tank on policing subjects under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

WhatsApp, on its part, has launched a number of public message campaigns in the recent past to advertise to the public about the safety features brought in by the platform, owned by technology major Meta.

The BPRD said through missed calls made from numbers starting with country codes mostly belonging to Vietnam, Kenya, Ethiopia and Malaysia, the hackers use ‘code scripted bots’ to find active users and then target them for various cyber threats.

As part of the impersonation scam, the scammers contacts the victim pretending to be the CEO or senior officer of their organisation and target top management executives like CFO (chief financial officer), COO (chief operating officer), CTO (chief technical officer) and high-ranking police and government officers, it said.

The fraudsters get personal information of the personnel they are pretending to be by surfing their social media handles and create similar profiles and seek immediate payments to some links citing their occupancy at some important meeting or a problem in their old number in order to convince the victim to transfer the funds, the BPRD said.

It also published, in the alert, pictures of some WA accounts where such attempts were made.

The communication expressed a particular concern about a recently released feature of ‘screen share’ by WhatsApp.

“In the past, numerous frauds were witnessed where scammers get victims’ screen access fraudulently to commit illicit activities,” the BPRD said.

It added that scammers impersonate as officials from banks, financial institutions, government bodies etc., and once they convince the victim to share their screen, a malicious app or software is installed “surreptitiously” and the victims sensitive information like bank details, passwords and banking services are compromised.

As part of the do’s and don’ts, the communication asked users to activate ‘two factor authentication or 2FA’ on their WA account while it suggested not replying and answering suspicious or unknown WA calls and reporting and blocking the numbers that approach the user.

“The officials associated with messaging app WhatsApp have already been informed for this data breaching act. As numerous government bodies and ministry officials are already working on it, official communications are sent to the concerned authorities for the same.”

“As a precautionary measure, unknown communications on WhatsApp without verifying their authenticity should be avoided. Still, any appropriate solution to such problems is not yet recognised,” it said.

Investments, incentives for Generative AI can boost job creations: Experts

Investments, incentives for Generative AI can boost job creations: Experts

Major investments in generative AI (artificial intelligence), incentives from the government and open-source content can boost employment generation and reduce disparities in the country, say experts.

Generative artificial intelligence refers to the use of new-age technology to create new content like text, images, music, audio, and videos.

“Generative AI will boost new job roles and can help people with limited skill levels perform higher level jobs, thus reducing the economic divide”, said Vishal Talwar, Director, IMT Ghaziabad in a statement.

According to the statement, highlighting the need for robust infrastructure and special provisions in the upcoming budget for Generative AI-related innovation, IMT Ghaziabad steered a key discussion on Generative AI’s role in skill development, job creation, and business education transformation earlier this month.

The deliberations concluded that major Investments in Generative AI can boost employment and reduce disparities in society.

Talwar, emphasized during the deliberation that in the wake of India’s ambitious AI initiatives, including India’s AI Mission, the nation is poised for a significant leap in AI-driven skill development and job opportunities..

The IMT Ghaziabad envisions a future where Generative AI acts as a catalyst, not just for technological advancements but for empowering individuals with the skills needed in a rapidly evolving job landscape, he stated.

Prof. Mohanbir Sawhney Associate Dean, Digital Innovation, McCormick Foundation Chair of Technology, Director of the Centre for Research in Technology & Innovation, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management said that Indian companies can level the playing field in Generative AI by using the platforms and tools already created and building upon those tools to develop applications relevant for the Indian context.

“We have big problems in sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture. There are massive opportunities for solving these problems with uniquely Indian AI and Generative AI-powered solutions,” he pointed out.

Given the scale of these problems, he said, “I believe they should be addressed by a collaborative effort between the private sector, the government, and NGOs. We also need to create nation-wide AI skilling initiative to ensure that we are building the talent needed for the future.

Nitin Mishra, Chief Technology Officer, ONDC, opined that Generative AI can improve the lives of people at the bottom of the pyramid.

During the deliberations, Raghav Gupta, MD, India and Asia Pacific, Coursera, focused on the role of Generative AI in making learning more engaging and widening access to high-quality education.

Tech evolution for ensuring hybrid mode of hearing is work in progress: SC

Tech evolution for ensuring hybrid mode of hearing is work in progress: SC

Technological advancement to ensure hybrid mode of hearing in all high courts is a work in progress, the Supreme Court said on Friday.

The top court rejected the submission that access to virtual hearings be declared a fundamental right saying this will not serve the cause.

“Only declaring it a fundamental right will not help. We have to ensure that facilities has to be there and we have to ensure that adequate facilities are there in the hilly regions also like say Meghalaya…,” it said.

The top court, which has been issuing slew of directions from time to time to ensure that no lawyer and litigant are denied access to video conferencing facility or hearing through hybrid mode, has deferred the hearing on a plea to February 12.

The bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra asked lawyers Gaurav Agarwal and K Parmeshwar, who are assisting it as amicus curiae, to hold further deliberations with the high courts and file an undated status report.

The amicus curiae have held talks with the high court officials for ensuring hybrid mode of hearing there and they will file suggestions to the bench for improving the existing technical facilities.

“This (ensuring hybrid mode of hearing) is really a matter of upgrading. This is a work in progress,” the CJI said after taking note of the submissions of the amicus curiae that they have talked with the apex court officials and analysed facilities available at high courts with that of top court.

Earlier, the CJI-led bench had expressed its anguish over the minimal use of technology by high courts and other courts.

On October 6, last year, it had said no high court in the country shall deny access to video conference or hearing through hybrid mode to lawyers and litigants after two weeks and made clear that technology now is not a matter of choice for judges.

“The question is not whether a particular judge is tech friendly. If you want to be a judge then you have to be tech-friendly. It is like how a judge can say that I do not know what ‘res judicata’ (a common legal principle which says one cannot claim judicial relief twice in one case). Every judge in the system has to be trained,” the bench had said.

“Technology is no longer a matter of choice for judges,” the CJI had said.

It had issued several directions for extending the facilities for hybrid mode of hearing across 25 high courts and tribunals.

The bench had directed all the state governments to provide necessary infrastructure for ensuring smooth functioning of hybrid mode of hearings in all high courts.

“Adequate facilities like WiFi be made available free of charge to advocates and litigants appearing before the high courts,” it said.

The video conferencing links must be made available in the cause list of the concerned court itself and there should be no requirement to make a separate application to appear through virtual mode, it had said.

It also directed all high courts to put in place a standard operating procedure (SOP) for litigants to avail access to hybrid/video conferencing hearings within four weeks, it said.

It had asked Delhi High Court judge Rajiv Shakdher to frame the SoP on hybrid hearings with the help of amicus curiae and share the document with the high courts.

Prior to this, the top court on September 15 had sought the response of all the high courts and some tribunals on whether they have disbanded the hybrid mode of hearing cases.

The apex court had taken note of the submissions made by petitioner Sarvesh Mathur, who appeared in person, that the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stopped virtual hearings, which is causing inconvenience to the litigants.

MachineGames reveals first look of upcoming Indiana Jones video game

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Image: MachineGames)

MachineGames unveiled the first look and the trailer for the upcoming Indiana Jones game titled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at the Xbox Developer_Direct conference on January 18. The Swedish video game developer said that the upcoming video game will be available on Xbox Series X and Series S alongside Windows PC with Game Pass, later this year.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set between “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Last Crusade” and will provide a first-person, single-player experience. According to the developer, the game will “take you from the hallowed halls of the Vatican and the arid deserts of Egypt to the lush and sunken temples of Sukhothai and the frigid peaks of the Himalayas.” MachineGun says that the game will be mostly first-person with occasional third-person moments for a more cinematic feel, aiming to retain the essence of the original Indian Jones movies.

“Our game is about putting you in the shoes of an iconic hero,” said Design Director Jens Andersson. “Since we are doing this mostly in first-person, you have the chance to truly become Indy. First-person makes you part of this world – allowing you to explore and experience things more intimately,” he added.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the upcoming video game, highlighting the central character, Indiana Jones, as he delves into ancient sites, unravelling puzzles, and engaging in combat using his signature whip. Noteworthy scenes feature additional characters like Emmerich Voss and a secondary protagonist Gina, an investigative reporter. The company has not confirmed any other playable characters beyond Indiana Jones, and the snippets of gameplay only showcase the iconic archaeologist from a first-person perspective.

Apart from Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, other video games such as Avowed, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and Ara: History Untold were announced at the Developer_Direct show. Additionally, Japanese game developer Square Enix announced its latest entry into the Mana series for the first time in over 15 years called “Visions of Mana”.
