Apple Inc sets Sept 12 as date for launch of iPhone 15, new watches

By Mark Gurman

Apple Inc. has set Sept. 12 as the date for its biggest product-upgrade event of the year, when it’s set to unveil the iPhone 15 line and next-generation smartwatches.

The company announced the plans on its website and via email under the tagline “Wonderlust.” The presentation will be streamed online at 10 a.m. Pacific, with an accompanying event at Apple’s Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. Bloomberg News previously reported that Apple was planning to introduce the new products on that day.

Apple is under more pressure than usual with this iPhone launch. Its sales have slid for three straight quarters as the company contends with shaky demand for smartphones and other devices. The new products should help restore growth this holiday season — Apple’s biggest sales period of the year. Together, the iPhone and Apple Watch bring in the majority of the tech giant’s revenue.

The highlight of the event will be the iPhone 15 lineup, which will include two entry-level models and two high-end models. The lower-end devices, likely to be called the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, will get some capabilities of last year’s Pro models — the A16 chip, Dynamic Island interface and a 48-megapixel rear camera — but retain the current design.

More significant changes are coming to the higher-end models, including a redesigned frame that uses titanium instead of stainless steel, far thinner borders around the screen and an A17 processor that uses the more advanced 3-nanometer production method. The titanium also will make the phones a bit lighter. And there’s a new customizable button that will replace the longstanding mute switch — a feature that’s been on the iPhone since the product first debuted in 2007.

The highest-end new iPhone, which sports a 6.7-inch screen, will also add a new camera with deeper optical zoom. That means the camera can focus more closely on far-away objects using the physical lens itself, rather than software, making for higher-quality shots. And all four new iPhones will shift to a USB-C charging port to comply with new European Union regulations. This will mark the first iPhone connector switch since 2012.

Apple typically makes new iPhones available for preorder on the Friday after their unveiling and begins delivering them to customers and stores one week later. The company also is planning to increase pricing on some of its higher-end models this year, Bloomberg News has reported.

To match the new iPhones, Apple will introduce updated AirPods at the event that include a USB-C charging port.

On the Apple Watch front, the company will unveil the Series 9 lineup and a second-generation version of the high-end Ultra, which debuted for the first time last year.

The new models will have faster chips — marking the first performance boost for Apple’s smartwatch in three years — but other changes will be minor. New case colors are expected to be one of the company’s selling points. For instance, Apple has tested a version of the Ultra in black.

Google unveils enterprise artificial-intelligence tech, new AI chip

Google unveils enterprise artificial-intelligence tech, new AI chip

Google unveiled a swath of fresh artificial-intelligence technology and partnerships on Tuesday that were geared toward bringing more of the growing technology to large businesses.

The batch of announcements from its Google Next conference in San Francisco included new customers for its cloud software such as General Motors and Estee Lauder Companies.

The Alphabet subsidiary made public a new version of its custom-built AI chips, unveiled an enterprise-scale tool to watermark and identify images generated with AI – plus tools for security and its office suite.

The flurry of announcements is part of Google’s recent effort to showcase its AI plans, after Microsoft caught the company off guard with an ambitious AI strategy it has been rolling out since last year.

But its big business customers need to be deliberate and move at a different pace, Google Cloud chief Thomas Kurian said in an interview with Reuters.

“We’ve generally told enterprise customers, ‘Go slowly and methodically because it’s important that you treat this as a strategic software development,'” he said. “There’s been this sort of FOMO of, ‘I need to be in generative AI for generative AI’s sake.'”

FOMO refers to fear of missing out, a common refrain in AI in recent months.

To bolster Google’s enterprise cloud service it added 20 AI models to its collection, bringing the total to 100. The AI infrastructure includes deals to bring Google Cloud customers access to Meta Platforms’ AI model LLaMa 2, and to the startup Anthropic’s Claude 2.

Google announced new versions of its own foundation AI infrastructure that improve performance and add features. The new version of its text model called PaLM, for example, increased the amount of text users can input to make it easier to process longer documents such as legal briefs and books.

Google discussed a tool that adds the capability to watermark AI-generated images. Called SynthID, the technology alters a digital image file in a way invisible to human eyes. It is designed to remain intact after an image is altered or tampered with.

Google also rolled out AI updates to its suite of office software and security tools. The company unveiled an AI-powered tool that can port databases from Oracle to an open-source version, a notoriously difficult task.

CUSTOM AI CHIPS

Ahead of the announcement of its full-fledged fifth-generation tensor processing unit (TPU), Google has opened access to a version that is optimized for genAI and large language models.

The new chip, called TPU v5e, is designed to train large models but also efficiently serve content from those models. It is not as powerful as the as yet unlaunched flagship fifth AI generation chip.

Google has stitched together the TPU v5e chips into batches of 256 that it describes as a “supercomputer.” Cloud customers can connect several pods together in order to tackle more complex computing problems.

Five tech skills make up 78% of hiring demands across industries: Report

Five tech skills make up 78% of hiring demands across industries: Report

The first quarter of the ongoing financial year 2023-24 (Q1FY24) has seen a surge in demand for tech skills such as development, SAP, automotive design, testing, and infra support, among others, reveals a skilling report by Quess Corp. The report also finds that companies across industries have adopted upskilling as a strategy to bridge the emerging skill gap in India.

Methodology

Quess Corp is a business solutions provider that has launched “The Skills Report”. This report offers insights into the technology skills that are in most demand from companies across industries in India. This report is based on Quess IT staffing’s operations data, which maps demand and supply in the talent ecosystem. The report focuses on the quantum of demand in Q1FY24.

Five tech skills make up 78 per cent of demand

The report found that the “highest intent to hire” was in development roles (28 per cent), especially those with skills in more than 65 technical proficiencies and platforms.

Full stack skills showed the most consistent and upward trend, especially within the consulting, automotive, banking, and telecom sectors. The demand for SAP (16 per cent) expertise has also remained consistently high, encompassing both development and implementation aspects.

Demand for all these proficiencies was particularly high within the consulting and global capability center (GCC) client domains.

Another desired talent was for automotive design at 14 per cent, in both global and domestic automobile sectors. This is due to the increasing adoption of digitisation and the need for more technologically adept skills. There has also been an increase in demand for testing skills (12 per cent) in both manual and automated domains. The Quess report notes a “pronounced demand” for Selenium, TOSCA, Workday, and ServiceNow proficiencies.

IT infrastructure support skills have also witnessed consistent demand at eight per cent across several industries in L1 and L2 support, spanning a diverse range of over 30 aspects. The report also observed a substantial demand for proficiencies such as data science, DevOps, cloud, ERP, cyber security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, UI/UX and other related domains.

Vijay Sivaram, the CEO of Quess IT Staffing commented on the demand for talent, “Our nation is currently at the forefront of global technology advancements, benefiting from the best demographic play and a highly educated STEM Talent Pool. The Indian stock markets continue to outperform, reflecting the confidence of investors in our thriving tech sector. As we witness substantial infrastructure changes all around us, foreign institutional investments (FIIs) are pouring funds into India, bolstering our economy.”

Industry-wise tech skill demand

Not surprisingly, the IT sector has the highest demand for tech skills at 15 per cent, followed by banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) at 15 per cent, and digital engineering at 13 per cent.

Other industries embracing technological solutions included the telecom and healthcare sectors.

Moreover, as the world is shifting toward renewable energy, the oil & gas sectors are also turning to digital solutions to remain competitive. This includes finding new revenue streams, increasing production, and driving down overall costs. Advanced technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and the industrial internet of things (IoTs) are also enabling companies to optimise previously complex processes and respond more effectively to volatility, shocks, and disruptions.

Active hiring at IT hubs

Hiring activity across India was primarily dominated by IT Hubs in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Haryana.

Remote working options and improved data services have enabled an increase in hiring across Tier 2 and 3 cities, particularly in e-commerce and financial services firms. The report adds that Quess has been able to deploy associates in cities such as Jaipur, Coimbatore, Indore, Kochi, Gulmarg, Siliguri and more.

Commenting on the landscape for tech hiring, Sivaram said, “Amid macroeconomic headwinds affecting the US and Europe, the IT services sector faces a downward hiring trend of 25-30 per cent. However, this situation has opened up new opportunities, with GCCs ramping up talent acquisition and projecting an estimated employee strength of 1.4 million. Hiring is likely to increase by 10 per cent. Our nation is currently at the forefront of global technology advancements, benefiting from the best demographic play and a highly educated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) talent pool.”

India’s Noise among top 3 global smartwatch brands in Q2 FY23: Counterpoint

India’s Noise among top 3 global smartwatch brands in Q2 FY23: Counterpoint

Noise ColorFit Pro 4 Alpha

Indian wearable maker Noise has emerged as third largest player in global smartwatch category based on shipment share in second quarter (Q2) of this financial year (FY23), according to Counterpoint. The company has recorded 86 per cent year-on-year growth in shipment with its Colorfit Icon series being the major driver that carved out a substantial 28 per cent share of its total shipments. Fire-Boltt is another Indian brand that emerged as major contender boasting 70 per cent YoY growth shipment in Q2 F23.

In the same period, 88 per cent of India’s smartwatch shipments were dominated by products priced less than $50. Leading the charge in this segment were Noise, Fire-Boltt and boAt, collectively contributing to 72 per cent of India’s total shipments.

The soaring India’s smartwatch segment served as the primary driver for the global market rebound, which increased 11 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2023 after declining in both Q4 2022 and Q1 2023 — according to Counterpoint Research’s Global Smartwatch Model Tracker.

Leading the global smartwatch market is Apple, which recorded a 10 per cent YoY decline in Q2 2023 shipments. This decline pushed its shipments to below 8 million units for the first time in three years. Consequently, Apple’s market share fell to 22 per cent from 27 per cent in Q2 2022.

China’s Huawei made big strides by increasing its domestic market share to 39 per cent following a surge of 58 per cent in shipments. This achievement propelled the brand to the second spot in the global smartwatch market share rankings.

South Korea’s Samsung witnessed a 19 per cent YoY decline in Q2 2023. The brand managed to boost shipments in the Chinese and Indian markets, but its shipment in North America and Europe dropped 24 per cent and 13 per cent YoY, respectively.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect: What is it, how does it work, and launch timeline

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect: What is it, how does it work, and launch timeline

US-based audio-video technology company Dolby Laboratories on Augst 29 announced a new enhancement for the TV sound experience. Named Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, this new feature would enable users with compatible devices to pair their TV sound system with wireless speakers. Dolby claims that this feature intelligently optimises sound for any room layout and speaker arrangement, delivering an exceptional experience from any corner of the room.

Teaming up with TV manufacturer TCL, Dolby will unveil the Dolby Atmos FlexConnect at IFA. TCL has disclosed that the TV will be powered by MediaTek’s Pentonic Smart TV series chipset. In addition to the TV, TCL intends to showcase a range of wireless speakers designed to complement its upcoming line of TVs featuring Dolby Atmos FlexConnect.

What is Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos is an advanced audio technology developed by Dolby Laboratories that aims to provide a more immersive and three-dimensional audio experience in various forms of entertainment, such as movies, TV shows, music, and gaming. Traditional audio systems have been based on channel-based audio, where sounds are assigned to specific channels (like left, right, center, surround, etc.) and played through corresponding speakers.

Dolby Atmos, on the other hand, takes a more object-based approach to audio. Instead of being tied to specific channels, sounds are treated as individual audio objects that can be placed and moved in a three-dimensional space. This means that audio can come from any direction, including above and below, creating a more lifelike and immersive experience for the listener.

What is Dolby Atmos FlexConnect

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is a novel feature that would allow consumers to augment the audio performance of their Dolby Atmos-enabled TV by integrating wireless speakers. In the conventional setup, built-in TV speakers are muted when the system detects additional audio accessories like a sound bar. With FlexConnect, users have the flexibility to expand their sound setup by connecting wireless speakers. Dolby asserts that this setup process is uncomplicated and swift, requiring no extra equipment or cables.

How does it work

Dolby’s approach involves utilising microphones within the TV for acoustic mapping to pinpoint the location of each wireless speaker in the room. Subsequently, the feature automatically calibrates the system to achieve optimal audio performance. This means that audio emanates from both the TV speakers and each wireless speaker. According to Dolby, the feature dynamically optimises the sound signal based on the capabilities and positions of all available speakers. This dynamic optimisation ensures that the sound image is adjusted to consistently deliver top-notch performance, guaranteeing an exceptional listening experience for users.
