WhatsApp rolls out screen sharing, landscape mode for video calls

Meta-owned social media messaging application WhatsApp has rolled out screen sharing and landscape mode features for video calls, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday.

“We’re adding the ability to share your screen during a video call on WhatsApp,” Zuckerberg posted on Facebook.

Screen sharing allows users to share a live view of their screen during a call. The feature can be initiated by clicking on the ‘share’ icon and choosing between sharing a specific application or sharing the entire screen, the company said in a release.

“You can now also enjoy video calls in Landscape mode for a wider and more immersive viewing and sharing experience on your phone,” Meta said.

Norway fines Meta Platforms ,700/per day to stop privacy breach

Norway fines Meta Platforms $97,700/per day to stop privacy breach

Meta Platforms is asking a court in Norway to stop a fine the Nordic country’s data regulator imposed on the owner of Facebook and Instagram for breaching users’ privacy, according to a court filing.

Meta Platforms will be fined 1 million crowns ($97,700) per day from Aug. 14 over privacy breaches, Norway’s data protection authority told Reuters on Monday, in a decision that could have wider European implications.

Meta Platforms is asking for a temporary injunction against the order, according to a court filing. Its petition will be presented on Aug. 22 during a two-day hearing.

The company’s Norwegian lawyer said media queries should be directed to Meta. Meta Platforms did not reply to a request for comment.

The Norwegian data regulator, Datatilsynet, said Meta Platforms was seeking to stop the imposition of the fine.

“They say that the court should put … a pause on our order, pending a full trial,” Tobias Judin, head of Datatilsynet’s international section told Reuters.

“Datatilsynet will argue that there is no basis for an injunction.” The regulator has said Meta cannot harvest user data in Norway, such as users’ physical locations, and use it to target advertising at them, called behavioural advertising, a business model common to Big Tech.

The fine will run until Nov. 3. Datatilsynet can make it permanent by referring its decision to the European Data Protection Board, which has the power to do so, if it agrees with the Norwegian regulator’s decision.

That could also widen the decision’s territorial scope to the rest of Europe.

Datatilsynet had yet to take this step.

MPL to lay off 350 employees after 28% GST imposed on online gaming

MPL to lay off 350 employees after 28% GST imposed on online gaming

India’s popular online gaming and fantasy sports startup Mobile Premier League (MPL) is laying off 350 employees, representing about 50 per cent of its India workforce, reported Moneycontrol.

This comes weeks after New Delhi implemented a 28 per cent tax on online real-money games.

MPL’s survival plan

The Bengaluru-based startup initially announced its plans to lay off employees last week and sent a formal communication on Tuesday, people familiar with the matter said.

MPL had earlier declined to comment. However, following the publication of the story confirmed the layoff.

“As a digital company, our variable costs predominantly involve people, servers and office infrastructure. Therefore, we must take steps to bring these expenses down to survive and ensure that the business remains viable,” Sai Srinivas, founder and chief executive of MPL, wrote to employees in an email on Tuesday.

This is the second round of layoffs at the Bengaluru -based startup in about a year. It had let go more than 100 people and exited the Indonesian market in May 2022.

New tax rules for online gaming

The move follows New Delhi’s implementation of a new taxation rule for the online gaming industry. India’s Goods and Services Tax Council, which comprises top federal and state finance ministers, announced plans to levy a 28 per cent indirect tax on online gaming, casinos and horse racing.

The new taxation rule increases the tax burden on MPL by up to 350-400 per cent, Srinivas wrote in the email on Tuesday.

The All India Gaming Federation, representing players including Mobile Premier League, Gameskraft, Paytm First Games, Zupee, Nazara and Rush, labelled the new taxation rule “unconstitutional, irrational, and egregious.”

Several notable investors, including Tiger Global, DST Global, Peak XV, Steadview Capital and Kotak Private Equity, subsequently wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to reconsider the “onerous tax regime.”

The investors’ group stated that the decision would lead to a write-off of $2.5 billion and a loss of 1 million direct and indirect jobs. However, the Indian government did not roll back its decision.

Airtel Xstream AirFiber 5G: Check details on plans, speed and connectivity

Airtel has introduced its much-touted Xstream AirFiber service in India. Promoted as India’s first fixed wireless access (FWA) service, Xstream AirFiber is rooted on Airtel 5G Plus and aims to offer a wireless Wi-Fi experience in all districts, particularly in rural areas.

Shashwat Sharma, Director of Customer Business Bharti Airtel stated that, “India has seen the quick development of home broadband but there still remain regions with no access to fast speed internet at home because of the actual challenges of laying fiber in a country the size of India. While fiber to the home will always define the best experience of Wi-Fi at home, AirFiber helps bridge the experience gap for everyone else.

What is Airtel Xstream AirFiber?

The Airtel Xstream AirFiber is a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) powered via Airtel’s 5G plus network. It is a wireless 5G service like wireless 4G dongles. But, it will give a lot quicker information, less latency and great coverage over the dongle like the broadband.

The AirFiber is easy to install in both rural and urban cities as the network doesn’t need wiring and digging, and so on. Also unlike the Xstream Fiber, the Xstream AirFiber is wireless, so it will additionally lessen the usage of fiber cables.

Airtel Xstream Fiber is the company’s wired broadband connection that needs a ton of gadgets, wiring and accessibility in the areas where its services are available. Airtel AirFiber, on the other hand, offers a total wireless solution for customers. The Airtel AirFiber is currently accessible for buying by means of the Airtel Store in Delhi and Mumbai only. The organisation intends to extend it to additional areas in the upcoming weeks.

AirFiber: Plans

The Airtel AirFiber plans are Rs 799 every month, Rs 4,435 for 6 months. The costs of plans are excluding taxes, so they could change at the final payment time.

How to buy Airtel Xstream AirFiber?

To get the new Airtel Xstream AirFiber plan, a user can go to the nearby Airtel stores in Delhi and Mumbai and buy the Xstream AirFiber connection. Post buying, set it up by downloading the Xstream AirFiber application to your gadget. Utilize the application to decide the ideal area for your Xstream AirFiber device and go on with the setup.

Microsoft’s Bing AI is coming to other browsers, including Apple Safari

Microsoft’s Bing AI is coming to other browsers, including Apple Safari

Microsoft on Monday announced that it would soon expand the availability of its AI-powered Bing from its own Edge browser to third-party browsers, including both on the web and on mobile devices. The announcement was made on a blog to celebrate half a year of the AI chatbot and tools. There have been more than one billion chats and 750 million AI-generated images produced since its launch, Microsoft said.

“This next step in the journey allows Bing to showcase the incredible value of summarized answers, image creation and more, to a broader array of people,” Microsoft stated in its announcement of the coming feature. “You’ll get most of the great benefits of Bing and we’ll continue to optimize along the way to meet your needs across different browsers”.

In late July, Microsoft confirmed its AI-powered Bing Chat was being tested in third-party browsers like Chrome and Safari for select users.

The company added that, while the Bing experience would work in third-party web browsers, the “best” experience would be available in the Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft also celebrated several other recently launched features in the blog post. This includes an enhanced Bing Chat with support for longer conversations and chat history (available exclusively on the Edge browser) and the ability to search using both text and images. Microsoft also referenced the launch of dark mode for Bing Chat and the newly announced Bing Chat Enterprise, which includes commercial data protection.

Microsoft did not provide an exact launch date for third-party browser support for Bing Chat but said that the feature will be arriving soon.
