“Password” most widely used password in India, “bigbasket” fourth: Report

“Password” most widely used password in India, “bigbasket” fourth: Report

“Password” continues to be the most widely used in India, a new report showed. It is used by nearly 3.5 million users in the country, and it would take less than one second for hackers to hack it. It is followed by “123456”, which can also be cracked within one second.

The fourth most widely used in India is the name of a start-up, the report released by NordPass showed. “Bigbasket” has been used by over 75,000 users in India as their . It would, however, take about 5 minutes to crack it. The third most widely used password is 12345678.

“We learned that despite growing awareness, old habits die hard. The research shows that people still use weak passwords to protect their accounts,” the report said.

The country’s 11th, 18th and 19th most popular passwords were found to be different spellings of “India”. These were Indya123, India@123 and india123, which have been used 7,512, 5,321 and 5,207 times, respectively.

Four out of the top 10 passwords are numeric, three are textual, and the rest are alphanumeric.

Globally too, “password” was found to be the most widely used password. It is used by over 4.9 million users worldwide. It is followed by “123456” and “123456789”.

The analysis of the trend showed a change in the use of passwords. For the last two years, “123456” was the most widely used password globally. In 2019, “12345” was the most-used password. However, this year, a textual password has topped the list.

The strong impact of culture

The report also analysed the impact of culture on the usage of particular words as passwords.

“The glitziest film industry event of the year – the ceremony – inspired many to use not-so-glitzy passwords: the password ‘Oscars’ was used 62,983 times,” it said.

Millions of passwords were kept on the name of the movies or TV series released in 2020/21, like Batman, Encanto and Euphoria.

“‘batman’ was used 2,562,776 times, ‘euphoria’ 53,993, and ‘encanto’ 10,808 times,” it added.

Apple to source made-in-US chips for its devices to reduce reliance on Asia

Apple to source made-in-US chips for its devices to reduce reliance on Asia

Inc. is preparing to begin sourcing chips for its devices from a plant under construction in Arizona, marking a major step toward reducing the company’s reliance on Asian production.

Chief Executive Officer made the disclosure during an internal meeting in Germany with local engineering and retail employees as part of a recent tour of Europe, according to remarks reviewed by Bloomberg News. He added that may also expand its supply of chips from plants in Europe.

“We’ve already made a decision to be buying out of a plant in Arizona, and this plant in Arizona starts up in ’24, so we’ve got about two years ahead of us on that one, maybe a little less,” Cook told the employees. “And in Europe, I’m sure that we will also source from Europe as those plans become more apparent,” he said at the meeting, which included services chief Eddy Cue and Deirdre O’Brien, its head of retail and human resources.

Cook is likely referring to an Arizona factory that will be run by Taiwan Manufacturing Co., Apple’s exclusive chip-manufacturing partner. That plant is slated for a 2024 opening. And TSMC is already eyeing a second US facility, part of a broader push to increase chip production in the country.

Shares of TSMC climbed as much as 2.9% in Taiwan trading Wednesday after Bloomberg News reported on Cook’s remarks. Apple was little changed.

TSMC’s stock surged 7.9% on Tuesday after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. disclosed it had taken a stake in the company.

Representatives for Apple and TSMC declined to comment.

. is also building plants in Arizona that will open as early as 2024. The chipmaker was a major Apple supplier for years, but it’s unlikely to recapture that business. Apple has swapped out Intel processors in Macs and other products in favor of its own components, and the chipmaker has an unproven track record of manufacturing other companies’ designs.

The US government is dangling roughly $50 billion in incentives — part of legislation known as the Chips and Science Act — to encourage manufacturing to expand stateside. The iPhone maker currently sources its device processors from TSMC plants located in Taiwan, an area with an outsized share of production. During the meeting, Cook said that 60% of the world’s processor supply comes out of Taiwan.

“Regardless of what you may feel and think, 60% coming out of anywhere is probably not a strategic position,” he said.

Processors are at the heart of nearly every Apple product, whether it’s the high-end Mac Pro desktop computer, the iPhone or even AirPods. The chips are designed by Apple and then manufactured by TSMC. Bringing even a portion of that production back to the US — after years of relying on Asia — would be a significant step.

A lingering question is whether the factory as planned is suited to Apple’s needs. The Taiwanese company has said that the plant will initially have a capacity of 20,000 chips per month and use a 5-nanometer production process. That wouldn’t satisfy Apple’s near-future desire for more advanced, 3-nanometer chips.

TSMC could theoretically introduce advanced production more quickly than it has so far announced. Apple also could potentially use the Arizona production for less complex components in its devices.

While most of the final assembly for Apple products is handled in China and surrounding countries in Asia, Apple does have a set of suppliers that manufacture components domestically. The Cupertino, California-based company has touted that Mac Pro models sold in the US are assembled in Texas.

Like the US, Europe has been offering incentives to spur more chip manufacturing. In his remarks, Cook didn’t specify where in Europe the company might get additional chips from, but Bloomberg News has reported that TSMC is in discussions with the German government about establishing a plant in that country.

Apple is growing significantly in Germany. The company has several hundred local engineers working on an effort to replace Qualcomm Inc. components in iPhones with a homegrown cellular modem.

More broadly, the Chips and Science Act and the complementary effort in Europe are poised to reshape the chip industry, Cook said during the meeting in Germany.

“I think you will wind up seeing a significant investment in capability and capacity in both the United States and Europe to try to reorient the market share of where silicon is produced.”

Qualcomm to transform into connected chip company for intelligent edge: CEO

Qualcomm to transform into connected chip company for intelligent edge: CEO

From PC to virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) headsets, from wearables like smartwatches to a connected car, Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of chip-maker Qualcomm, has said that his company is now pushing the mobile technology forward to make millions of lives more meaningful across the device landscape.

At his keynote address during the ‘Snapdragon Summit 2022’ at the Maui island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago, Amon said the technology that powers our smartphones is beginning to go everywhere where mobile experience goes.

“People ask me, can you define assets? I define those assets in three parts — everything wireless and everything cloud-connected 100 per cent of the time; high-performance computing for a low-power device and complete device intelligence,” Amon emphasised.

“We have a belief at that this scale of AI is going to happen at the edge. AI is becoming more and more pervasive in our experiences, but AI at the edge of the device is different,” he added.

The latest premium mobile platform called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is another step towards realising his dream that aims to reinvent premium mobile gaming in the era.

According to the CEO, smartphones are our most inseparable device to date.

“It has fundamentally changed society, and we’re doing more and more amazing things on mobiles. From the ability to stream 4K and 8K videos from anywhere and mainstream gaming — apart from capturing and sharing pictures and remaining connected 24/7 — a smartphone is really an incredible device,” Amon elaborated.

To make this elevated smartphone experience more deeper in our lives, “we have to keep pushing the boundaries of communications (whether it’s cellular or Wi-Fi), CPU processing, graphics processing, digital signal processing, image processing, AI processing and many more”.

He said that we are really changing from the company that used to be a wireless communication company for the mobile industry, into “the connected processor company for the intelligent edge”.

“I see our mobile technology and snapdragon chips going to computers, to the merger of physical and digital spaces, to an ecosystem of wearables and cars, etc,” the Qualcomm CEO told the audience on Tuesday.

“That is the mission of Snapdragon to be able to deliver those experiences across devices and continue to push the technology forward,” Amon noted.

Snapdragon has become synonymous with premium mobile experiences worldwide.

“While our financial outlook is being temporarily impacted by elevated channel inventory, our diversification strategy and long-term opportunities remain unchanged,” the CEO said last month.

“In edge networking internet of things (IoT), we have seen positive share traction related to the rollout of Wi-Fi 6 and 6E solutions for enterprise access points and retail mesh systems,” informed Amon.
