Qualcomm to transform into connected chip company for intelligent edge: CEO

From PC to virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) headsets, from wearables like smartwatches to a connected car, Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of chip-maker Qualcomm, has said that his company is now pushing the mobile technology forward to make millions of lives more meaningful across the device landscape.

At his keynote address during the ‘Snapdragon Summit 2022’ at the Maui island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago, Amon said the technology that powers our smartphones is beginning to go everywhere where mobile experience goes.

“People ask me, can you define assets? I define those assets in three parts — everything wireless and everything cloud-connected 100 per cent of the time; high-performance computing for a low-power device and complete device intelligence,” Amon emphasised.

“We have a belief at that this scale of AI is going to happen at the edge. AI is becoming more and more pervasive in our experiences, but AI at the edge of the device is different,” he added.

The latest premium mobile platform called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is another step towards realising his dream that aims to reinvent premium mobile gaming in the era.

According to the CEO, smartphones are our most inseparable device to date.

“It has fundamentally changed society, and we’re doing more and more amazing things on mobiles. From the ability to stream 4K and 8K videos from anywhere and mainstream gaming — apart from capturing and sharing pictures and remaining connected 24/7 — a smartphone is really an incredible device,” Amon elaborated.

To make this elevated smartphone experience more deeper in our lives, “we have to keep pushing the boundaries of communications (whether it’s cellular or Wi-Fi), CPU processing, graphics processing, digital signal processing, image processing, AI processing and many more”.

He said that we are really changing from the company that used to be a wireless communication company for the mobile industry, into “the connected processor company for the intelligent edge”.

“I see our mobile technology and snapdragon chips going to computers, to the merger of physical and digital spaces, to an ecosystem of wearables and cars, etc,” the Qualcomm CEO told the audience on Tuesday.

“That is the mission of Snapdragon to be able to deliver those experiences across devices and continue to push the technology forward,” Amon noted.

Snapdragon has become synonymous with premium mobile experiences worldwide.

“While our financial outlook is being temporarily impacted by elevated channel inventory, our diversification strategy and long-term opportunities remain unchanged,” the CEO said last month.

“In edge networking internet of things (IoT), we have seen positive share traction related to the rollout of Wi-Fi 6 and 6E solutions for enterprise access points and retail mesh systems,” informed Amon.

Apple to give more control on iPhone’s always-on display with new iOS beta

Apple to give more control on iPhone’s always-on display with new iOS beta

American tech giant Apple will offer more control over their iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max smartphone’s always-on display with their latest iOS beta.

According to The Verge, the latest developer beta for the upcoming iOS 16.2 includes toggles that let users hide the wallpaper and notifications while using the feature, as per reports from MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

Turning off both with always-on activated will make it so the user just sees a clock and their lockscreen widgets when the phone is locked.

Currently, on iOS, it’s all or nothing as users can have the always-on display that’ll show wallpaper and notifications, or they can turn it off, leaving the phone’s screen blank when it’s locked and asleep, reported The Verge.

Since its launch, the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display has struck some as a little odd. While there are indeed some people that enjoy having their wallpaper always glowing at them (with accurate colours, despite the dimmed appearance), others find it to be a bit distracting.

As per The Verge, it seems like Apple’s heard that feedback and is working on making that a reality, though it is worth noting that a feature showing up in a beta version isn’t 100 per cent confirmation that it’ll ship in the final OS.

Digital Shakti Campaign to skill 1 mn women in 2 years on cybersecurity

Digital Shakti Campaign to skill 1 mn women in 2 years on cybersecurity

Digital Shakti Campaign, a cybersecurity awareness programme for women, aims to spread awareness among 10 lakh netizens in two years, a senior official of organiser body CyberPeace Foundation said on Tuesday.

While launching the 4th phase of the campaign, non-profit and digital think-tank body CyberPeace Foundation’s founder and global president Major Vineet Kumar said that the programme aims to skill people around cybersecurity and online safety to help them fight the evils that exists in the cyber space like ransomware, stalking, bullying, sextortion etc.

“We look forward to significantly bridging the cybersecurity knowledge gap in India among vulnerable populations and reaching 1 million netizens in the next two years,” Kumar said.

He said that technology platforms have become the first point of contact for criminals.

“We are working with the government to address issues like trafficking. Today the first connection that criminals have is on the tech platforms. Criminals have started using various tech platforms and children are vulnerable to it. Pretenders who are there are reaching out to children of all age groups, of all segments. They target them through all kinds of platforms and abuse them,” Kumar said.

National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma said that several women and girls are not aware of means to remain safe in the online world.

She said most of the crimes against women are done mostly by young boys who are tech-savvy.

“Whether you talk about cyber stalking, cyber bullying, email spoofing, phishing etc, all these platforms are there which make women vulnerable, specially social media. This programme is teaching you how to be safe along with how you can be empowered financially. Marriage should not be the aim of life. You should first empower yourself financially,” Sharma said.

Meta Director for Public Policy Rajiv Aggarwal said that the Digital Shakti has been an enabler for more than 3 lakh women.

“With the launch of phase 4, we aim to sensitize more than 1 million women across India on how to be safe online so as to derive the best experience and opportunities that digital platforms have to offer,” Aggarwal said.

Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General B S Raju said that cyberspace is not a very kind environment with presence of cyber criminals, predators etc.

“Youngsters would want to start their relationship on the online platforms and then you think you are going to graduate to a physical realm. Please go and meet people in person, come to know who they are and how they are and thereafter transit to establish relationships on the online platforms. There are no online friends,” Raju said.

He appealed to youngsters to be open to share their bad experience in the online world with parents and teachers before the problem worsens.
