Digital Shakti Campaign to skill 1 mn women in 2 years on cybersecurity

Digital Shakti Campaign, a cybersecurity awareness programme for women, aims to spread awareness among 10 lakh netizens in two years, a senior official of organiser body CyberPeace Foundation said on Tuesday.

While launching the 4th phase of the campaign, non-profit and digital think-tank body CyberPeace Foundation’s founder and global president Major Vineet Kumar said that the programme aims to skill people around cybersecurity and online safety to help them fight the evils that exists in the cyber space like ransomware, stalking, bullying, sextortion etc.

“We look forward to significantly bridging the cybersecurity knowledge gap in India among vulnerable populations and reaching 1 million netizens in the next two years,” Kumar said.

He said that technology platforms have become the first point of contact for criminals.

“We are working with the government to address issues like trafficking. Today the first connection that criminals have is on the tech platforms. Criminals have started using various tech platforms and children are vulnerable to it. Pretenders who are there are reaching out to children of all age groups, of all segments. They target them through all kinds of platforms and abuse them,” Kumar said.

National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma said that several women and girls are not aware of means to remain safe in the online world.

She said most of the crimes against women are done mostly by young boys who are tech-savvy.

“Whether you talk about cyber stalking, cyber bullying, email spoofing, phishing etc, all these platforms are there which make women vulnerable, specially social media. This programme is teaching you how to be safe along with how you can be empowered financially. Marriage should not be the aim of life. You should first empower yourself financially,” Sharma said.

Meta Director for Public Policy Rajiv Aggarwal said that the Digital Shakti has been an enabler for more than 3 lakh women.

“With the launch of phase 4, we aim to sensitize more than 1 million women across India on how to be safe online so as to derive the best experience and opportunities that digital platforms have to offer,” Aggarwal said.

Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General B S Raju said that cyberspace is not a very kind environment with presence of cyber criminals, predators etc.

“Youngsters would want to start their relationship on the online platforms and then you think you are going to graduate to a physical realm. Please go and meet people in person, come to know who they are and how they are and thereafter transit to establish relationships on the online platforms. There are no online friends,” Raju said.

He appealed to youngsters to be open to share their bad experience in the online world with parents and teachers before the problem worsens.

Emergency SOS via satellite now available on iPhone 14 lineup in US, Canada

Emergency SOS via satellite now available on iPhone 14 lineup in US, Canada

on Tuesday announced that its safety service Emergency via satellite is now available to customers in the US and Canada.

Available on all 14 models, the technology enables users to message with emergency services while outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.

Additionally, if users want to reassure friends and family of their whereabouts while traveling off the grid, they can now open the Find My app and share their location via satellite, the company said in a statement.

The Emergency via satellite will come to France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK in December.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said that the feature “is a breakthrough service available only on the 14 lineup, and a new innovation that we hope will provide our customers some peace of mind.”

The service will be included for free for two years starting at the time of activation of a new 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Emergency via satellite and Find My via satellite require iOS 16.1.

The emergency services call centres to connect to even more users in emergency situations, and requires no additional software or protocols to enable communications.

“Users will be connected directly to emergency services that are equipped to receive text messages, or to relay centres with Apple-trained emergency specialists who are ready to contact PSAPs that cannot receive text messages on the user’s behalf,” said .

With Emergency SOS via satellite, if a user is not able to reach emergency services because no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is available, an easy-to-use interface appears on iPhone to get the user help utilising a satellite connection.

A short questionnaire appears to help the user answer vital questions with a few simple taps, which is transmitted to dispatchers in the initial message, to ensure they are able to quickly understand a user’s situation and location.

said it worked closely with experts to review standard questions and protocols to identify the most common reasons for calling emergency services.

“We dedicate our lives to helping people in need, but there are inevitably people who are not able to contact a dispatcher. Emergency SOS via satellite will allow us to help iPhone users in more remote areas who might not otherwise be able to reach us,” said Jennifer Kirkland, ENP, the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center’s 911 center manager.

With Emergency SOS via satellite, users can send and receive messages in as little as 15 seconds in clear conditions.

Google announces availability of Health Connect beta app on Play Store

Google announces availability of Health Connect beta app on Play Store

has announced that its Health Connect app is available to download as a public beta via the Play Store.

Also, more than 10 health and fitness apps have launched integrations with Health Connect, including Fitbit, Samsung Health, Fit, MyFitnessPal, Oura, Peloton and more.

The purpose of Health Connect is to provide centralised access to health and fitness data from various eligible apps, said in a blogpost.

“With Health Connect, building an integration with a new app is as simple as reading in new data from Health Connect, rather than building a whole new integration,” it added.

The app syncs health and fitness data from qualifying platforms enables other apps to access this data with the user’s permission and gives users access to centralised privacy controls.

Google said that Health Connect offers a standardised data format that covers more than 40 data types across six categories.

The scheme covers a wide range of use cases, from exercises to sleep tracking to vital signs.

Previously, users had to switch between several apps to manage data permissions in the past, and developers had to build out permissions management UIs themselves.

Therefore, with Health Connect, users can easily manage permissions in a single place, with granular controls to see which apps are accessing data at any given time, according to the blogpost.

Amazon adds custom alerts to Alexa Together caregiver service: Details here

Amazon adds custom alerts to Alexa Together caregiver service: Details here

has added a “custom alert” to Together care service, which will allow pings up to 10 caregivers when there’s particular smart home activity.

Together is a subscription service, designed to help ageing loved ones feel more comfortable and confident to live independently.

With custom alert, the user will be notified if the care receiver, for example, opened a sensor-equipped medicine cabinet or turned on the bedroom light at the right time in the morning, reports Engadget.

Users can enable custom alerts through the “More” section in the App, also it requires at least one Echo device for the person receiving support.

Alexa Together provides a variety of remote assistance, including 24/7 urgent-care responses, remote assistance for features like reminders, and fall detection with compatible sensors, according to the report.

It was created during the height of the pandemic when in-person care was frequently impractical, but it is also pitched as a way to give independence to the elderly and others who would otherwise require physical check-ins.

Moreover, it’s easy to imagine privacy concerns.

If an intruder gained access, they could discover when a family member leaves the house or wakes up.

However, notes that there are “multiple layers” of protection, including limited information in the activity feed and the ability to revoke permission, said the report.
