Google brings Material You themes to Chrome Canary: Details here

Google brings Material You themes to Chrome Canary: Details here

has brought out the Material You-style colour-based themes to its Chrome Canary, an experimental version of the tech giant’s browser.

The ‘Customise Chrome Colour Extraction’ feature automatically picks a colour scheme for the browser, based on the wallpaper shown when the user opens a new tab, reports The Verge.

A Reddit user who first spotted the feature demonstrated how changing the new tab wallpaper instantly modifies the UI (user interface) and address bar of the browser’s colour scheme.

According to Google’s software, the new feature “enables setting theme colour based on background image colour when the background image is changed in New Tab Page”.

It is available on Mac, Windows, and Linux, as well as on Google’s ChromeOS and Fuchsia operating systems.

The feature is similar to Android’s Material You feature, which changes the operating system’s colour scheme based on what it detects in the home screen wallpaper.

It was previously possible to manually change Chrome’s colour scheme to the user’s choice, but the new feature simplifies the process, the report said.

The feature works best with colourful wallpapers, whereas, darker backgrounds tend to make Chrome’s interface black, brown, or grey in colour.

It does not work when the user uploads their own image and is still unclear whether it is a bug or by design.

YouTube TV rolls out update to add clock to keep track of time: Details

YouTube TV rolls out update to add clock to keep track of time: Details

TV has rolled out a new update in which it adds a clock to keep track of the time while streaming content on the video-streaming platform.

According to 9to5Google, announced the addition via a PSA-style ad that had some rather amusing description.

“Some TV customers have reported a lack of knowing what time it is due to the removal of their old cable box. If you are one of these people, do not panic. Starting November 10th, you will be able to find the time directly on your YouTube TV live guide,” the description reads.

On the top-left corner, underneath the platform’s logo, in the Live tab, users will find this simple clock.

In Chromecasts, the new feature will save users from long-pressing the Home button on their remote to access quick settings and check the time card, which is quite small, according to the report.

Earlier this month, YouTube had rolled out its TikTok rival short-form video app Shorts on TV to its global users.

Google Health Connect: What is it, how it works, availability, and more

Google Health Connect: What is it, how it works, availability, and more

American giant on Monday introduced the Health Connect app. Aimed at health and fitness enthusiasts, the app allows users to connect various fitness apps to get holistic health insights on a single app. The Health Connect is currently in the testing phase and its beta version is available for download on the Play store.

Google created the Health Connect app in collaboration with Samsung. Google said the app would help users centralise the management of all fitness apps. Health Connect enables users to share health and fitness data across Android devices. In order to gain credit on an app, users can also share data of the workout they did on a different app with the Health connect app.

For example, with the Health Connect app, Android users will be able to synchronize and get credit for their Peloton workouts in apps like Oura, MyFitnessPal, WeightWatchers and Lifesum. Through a single integration with Health Connect, Peloton Members will have the option to share their workout stats across the ecosystem of apps they use to support their overall wellness.

According to Google, currently there are over ten health, fitness and wellness apps that are compatible for integration with the platform. Some of them are MyFitnessPal, Oura, Peloton, Samsung Health, Fitbit, and more.

It also simplifies the connectivity between your apps while providing centralised privacy controls for users. Earlier, users had to navigate to multiple apps to manage data permissions. With Health Connect, users can easily manage permissions in a single place, with granular controls to see which apps have access to data at any given time. Once the permission is given, the app will have access to new data and data from the past 30 days.

“Health Connect provides a standardized data schema which supports 40+ data types across 6 categories. Through the first wave of integrations, we have seen Health Connect provide many key benefits to developers.” said Google in a blog post.

VLC Media Player returns to India as MeitY lifts ban on VideoLAN website

VLC Media Player returns to India as MeitY lifts ban on VideoLAN website

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has lifted the ban it imposed on the VideoLAN website, which allows users to download the popular media-streaming player called the VLC Media Player. This comes about nine months after MeitY made the first announcement of blocking the website.

“We have news! VLC Media Player is back!”, VideoLAN announcement on Twitter.

The ministry sent a letter to VideoLAN on Monday stating that it has decided to lift the ban, as reported by the Indian Express (IE).

In October, MeitY sent a letter to VideoLAN stating the reasons for the ban. It said that the primary reason to block the website was that VideoLAN was communicating with servers of a previously banned app, Onmyoji Arena. Onmyoji was banned in India for allegedly transferring user data to a “hostile country”.

It further said that the ministry uses “open source threat intelligence reports” for its findings. According to the ministry, VLC Media Player was used by a China-backed hacking group called ‘Cicada’ for carrying out cyber attacks.

In reply to the letter, VideoLAN sent a detailed response to MeitY, according to IE. In this, the digital rights group assisted the website. The response explained the issues with MeitY’s concerns.

VideoLAN also denied the claims of transferring data to a “hostile country”. It further added that the ministry provided no details about the allegations of the use of the software by Chinese hackers.

After the ban was lifted, VideoLAN’s announcement said that VLC Media Player has nearly 80 million Indian users and “by blocking the primary avenue for authentic downloads and updates, the ban left us all considerably less secure on the internet than we were before.”
