India-China Disengagement Complete, Exchange Of Sweets Today: Sources

New:

Sticking to the announced timeline, India and China have completed disengagement in the Depsang and Demchok regions of Eastern Ladakh and patrolling will begin soon, said Army sources, adding that sweets will also be exchanged with troops from the Chinese side on the occasion of Diwali today.

The sources from the Indian Army said on Wednesday that the verification process is on and the modalities of patrolling will be decided by the ground commanders. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong told reporters in Kolkata hours later that the two countries had reached “many important understandings”.

“There was a very important meeting between President Xi Jinping and PM Narendra Modi (on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia last week). Now that the two leaders have reached important understandings, they will be the guidelines for the further development of relations between our two countries. I hope that, under the guidance of this consensus, our relations will be moving forward smoothly in the future and they will not be restricted or interrupted by specific disagreements between our two sides,” the ambassador said.

“As two neighbouring countries, it is natural that we have some differences and the most important thing is how to handle and solve them. The meeting of the two leaders has set a very good example for us on how to handle these differences,” he added.

Satellite Images

On October 21, India had announced that a patrolling agreement had been reached for the two contentious areas of Depsang and Demchok and the troops would return to the positions that existed before the stand-off between the two countries began in 2020. The disengagement process included the dismantling of structures and the restoration of the land on which they stood to their original condition.

Days after the agreement was announced, NDTV had accessed the first satellite images proving that structures were being removed by the Chinese side.

An image from the Depsang plains taken on October 11 showed four vehicles and two tents and, in another from October 25, the tents were gone and the vehicles could be seen moving away. The images were of an area near the ‘Y Junction’ from where Indian soldiers were prevented from travelling east to India’s patrolling points, which mark the extent of the Line of Actual Control that India claims in these areas.

Another set of images showed semi-permanent Chinese structures being removed from Demchok.

Forward Movement

The stand-off began in May 2020 and a clash took place in Ladakh’s Galwan the next month in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed in action and the Chinese side also suffered losses, with the exact number remaining unconfirmed.

A troop buildup followed on both sides and military-level talks began taking place to resolve the stand-off. In September 2022, Indian and Chinese troops withdrew from the contentious Gogra-Hot Springs area in Ladakh and returned to the pre-April-2020 position.

After the latest patrolling agreement was announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on October 21, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had confirmed it at the NDTV World Summit.

“We reached an agreement on patrolling, and we have gone back to the 2020 position. With that, we can say the disengagement with China has been completed… There are areas which, for various reasons after 2020, they blocked us, we blocked them. We have now reached an understanding which will allow patrolling as we had been doing till 2020,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi then met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia – their first bilateral since 2019 – on October 23 and the two leaders welcomed the agreement. “It should be our priority to ensure there is peace and stability along our border,” PM Modi told Mr Jinping.

After 'Flying BMW' Video Goes Viral, Gurugram's Quick Action On Speed Breaker

After 'Flying BMW' Video Goes Viral, Gurugram's Quick Action On Speed Breaker

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority said they have installed a cautionary signboard

Gurugram:

Days after a video showed cars “flying” due to a speed breaker on Gurugram’s Golf Course road, authorities swung into action and installed a cautionary signboard.

A video went viral on X showing a speeding BMW hitting the newly laid speed breaker, being in the air for over a second and at least three feet above the ground before landing about 15 feet away from the breaker.

The video also showed two trucks approaching the point, unaware of the unmarked breaker, flying after hitting it.

A clip also showed several people gathering at the spot to record videos of the speed breaker.

Facing backlash, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) late Tuesday said they have now installed a cautionary signboard “Speed Breaker Ahead”

They also said they have marked the speed breaker with thermoplastic white paint to enhance night-time visibility and help motorists navigate the stretch “safely”.

Golf Course Road is home to several luxurious residential projects such as DLF Camellias, Tulip Monsella, Golf Estate at M3M, and DLF Magnolias.

Nominations Over, But Uncertainty Lingers Over 15 Seats In Maharashtra

Nominations Over, But Uncertainty Lingers Over 15 Seats In Maharashtra

Mumbai:

The deadline for filing nominations is over but there is no clarity on around 15 seats in Maharashtra. The ruling alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena of Eknath Shinde and Nationalist Congress Party of Ajit Pawar is yet to announce the names of candidates for four seats. The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi – Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP and the Congress – have not officially declared candidates for 11 seats.

As of now, BJP has fielded 152 candidates, Ajit Pawar’s faction of NCP 52, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena 80. This includes the seats they have given to smaller allies — four in case of the BJP and two for Shiv Sena.

In the MVA, the Congress has fielded 103 candidates, Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar are at 87.

In the afternoon, Sharad Pawar had announced that 87 was the final number as far his party — the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) was concerned. But it still left the mystery over 11 seats intact.

While some of these seats are expected to go to the smaller allies and the Samajwadi Party, there is no clarity on who gets what, or even how many.

The unprecedented situation follows weeks of tussle in the Opposition camp. But the ruling alliance, which had more or less got its house in order, has allowed the suspense to grow.

Hand in hand with the apparent indecision comes a near-trend of leaders turning rebel and filing nomination as Independents.

The biggest case in point was Nawab Malik of Ajit Pawar’s NCP, who had filed two nominations from the Mankhud seat — one as an Independent and the other as an NCP member, till the party moved to back him just minutes before the deadline.

BJP spokesperson Shaina NC was also seen contesting from Mumbadevi on a Shiv Sena ticket. Even after her name was announced, BJP members were seen vying from that seat.

Israel Passes Law To Ban UN Relief Agency From Operating Inside Country

Israel Passes Law To Ban UN Relief Agency From Operating Inside Country

Jerusalem:

Israel’s parliament on Monday approved a bill banning the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) from working in Israel and occupied east Jerusalem, despite objections from the United States.

Lawmakers passed the bill with 92 votes in favour and 10 against, after years of harsh Israeli criticism of UNRWA, which has only increased since the start of the war in Gaza following Hamas’s deadly October 7 attacks last year.

The ban on the UN agency — which has provided essential aid and assistance across Palestinian territories and to Palestinian refugees elsewhere for more than seven decades — would be a blow to humanitarian work in Gaza if implemented, according to experts.

UNRWA spokeswoman Juliette Touma condemned the vote.

“It’s outrageous that a member state of the United Nations is working to dismantle a UN agency which also happens to be the largest responder in the humanitarian operation in Gaza,” she told AFP.

“If it’s implemented it’s a disaster including due to the impact this is likely to have on the humanitarian operation in Gaza and in several parts of the West Bank,” she said, adding that the agency is the lead provider of “shelter, food and primary health care” in war-battered Gaza.

Ahead of the vote, the United States said it was “deeply concerned” about the bill, reiterating the “critical” role the agency plays in distributing humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

Washington warned Israel on October 15 that it had 30 days to increase the amount of aid reaching the Gaza Strip or it would consider withholding some military assistance.

Also earlier Monday, Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed “profound regret” that Israel was “considering shutting down UNRWA’s operations”.

In January, Israel accused a dozen of UNRWA’s Gaza employees of involvement in the October 7 attack by Hamas, which sparked the deadliest war in the territory.

A series of probes found some “neutrality related issues” at UNRWA, and determined that nine employees “may have been involved” in the October 7 attack, but found no evidence for Israel’s chief allegations.

“There is a deep connection between the terrorist organization (Hamas) and UNRWA and Israel cannot put up with it,” Yuli Edelstein, a Likud party lawmaker and one of the sponsors of the bill, said in parliament as he presented the proposal.

“There is no place for enemies in the heart of the capital of the Jewish people.”

Israel claims the whole of Jerusalem, including the annexed east, as its indivisible capital.

– ‘Grave concern’ over ban –

The ban would effectively prevent UNRWA from operating in Israel and also target its operations in east Jerusalem, where it currently provides some essential services such as cleaning, education, and healthcare in certain neighbourhoods.

“There is a big gap between how UNRWA is viewed by some in the international community and how people in Israel see the agency,” Boaz Bismuth, an Israeli lawmaker who co-sponsored the legislation, told AFP.

UNRWA and other humanitarian agencies have accused Israeli authorities of restricting aid flows into Gaza, where almost all of the territory’s 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once in the war.

The agency itself has suffered heavy losses, with at least 223 of its staff killed and two-thirds of the agency’s facilities in Gaza damaged or destroyed since the war began.

The war in Gaza erupted with Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 43,020 people in Gaza, a majority of them civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry, figures which the UN considers reliable.

Over the weekend, a statement by foreign ministers from several Western countries slammed the proposed legislation targeting the UN agency.

“We, the Foreign Ministers of Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom, express our grave concern over legislation currently under consideration by the Israeli Knesset, aimed at revoking the privileges and immunities of [UNRWA],” read the statement.

UNRWA was created in 1949 to support Palestinian refugees in the Middle East.

Gary Kirsten, Months After Taking Pakistan White-Ball Coaching Job, Quits: Report | Cricket News

Gary Kirsten, Months After Taking Pakistan White-Ball Coaching Job, Quits: Report | Cricket News

The eternal dice of changes continues to roll in Pakistan cricket, with white-ball coach Gary Kirsten reportedly deciding to quit. Kirsten, who won the 2011 ODI World Cup with the MS Dhoni-led Indian team, has ended his association with the Pakistan men’s cricket team, as per a report, only a few months after being given the charge. A lot has changed since Kirsten took over as Pakistan’s ODI and T20I head coach in April this year. Babar Azam‘s return as skipper and then resignation, and selection committee changes, are some of the matters that highlight his 5-month tenure.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, some serious differences of opinion between Kirsten and the players have emerged over the last few weeks. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may not have directly influenced Kirsten to contemplate his future with the men’s national team, his recent request to appoint David Reid as a High-Performance coach was turned down by the board. The PCB offered a few other names as alternatives, leaving Kirsten disappointed.

While a formal decision on the matter is yet to be made, the PCB could name Kirsten’s successor in the coming days. Jason Gillespie, the incumbent red-ball coach of the men’s national team, is reportedly one of the leading candidates for the role.

The PCB could also appoint Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistan pacer, as the white-ball coach, keeping the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy in mind. Aaqib, at present, is one of the members on Pakistan’s national selection committee. His work behind the curtains reportedly played a big role in the team’s turnaround against England in the recently-concluded 3-match series, which ended in the hosts’ favour 2-1.

The Pakistan Cricket Board recently announced squads for the white-ball assignments against Australia and Zimbabwe. It has also been reported that Kirsten will not be accompanying the teams for those two series.

“Special Train Did Not Arrive…”: Railway Commissioner On Bandra Stampede

“Special Train Did Not Arrive…”: Railway Commissioner On Bandra Stampede

All injured passengers are now reported to be in stable condition, according to the medical team. (File)

Mumbai:

Thane Central Railway Deputy Commissioner Manoj Nana Patil on Sunday attributed the stampede at Bandra Terminus to increased passenger rush due to the festive season and the unreserved nature of the train.

Despite the Central Railway’s announcement of two unreserved trains departing from Mumbai, Deputy Commissioner Patil noted that the influx of passengers for the special train affected the Antyodaya Express, creating an overwhelming crowd that led to a stampede.

“Antyodaya Express is a weekly train that runs every Sunday. Being unreserved and affordable, it usually attracts a high number of passengers. Due to the Diwali festival, the rush was unusually high. Additionally, the special train scheduled to run yesterday did not arrive, resulting in even more passengers converging here. Our team was present, but people suddenly rushed for seats. No one was critically injured in the incident… We are investigating the facts,” Manoj Nana Patil said.

At least eight individuals were reported injured in the stampede at Bandra Terminus today, according to an official statement by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The incident occurred around 02:45 hours, as passenger train number 22921 Antyodaya Express was slowly being brought onto platform number 1 from the BDTS yard. Some passengers on the platform attempted to board the moving train, leading to a fall that resulted in injuries to two individuals.

In response, the RPF, GRP, and Home Guard officers on duty promptly admitted the injured to the Government Bhabha Hospital nearby.

All injured passengers are now reported to be in stable condition, according to the medical team.

Among the injured, five were admitted for treatment, while three opted to discharge themselves against medical advice (DAMA). Additionally, two patients were transferred to KEM Hospital for further care.

The injured individuals are identified as Shabhir Abdul Rehman (40), Sameer Shaikh (22), Mohammad Shareef Shaikh (25), Parmeshwar Sukhdar Gupta (28), Ravindra Harihar Chuma (30), Ramsevak Ravindra Prasad Prajapati (29), Sanjay Tilakram Kangay (27), and Divyanshu Yogendra Yadav (18).

Meanwhile, opposition leaders criticised the local administration and Indian Railways, citing inadequate festive season planning that led to the incident.

“The stampede at Bandra Terminus is very disturbing… This highlights the failure of Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Insufficient trains during the festive season and local administrative shortcomings contributed to this mishap,” said NCP-SCP leader Clyde Crasto.
