No party in the Maha Vikas Aghadi or MVA – Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP) – are eligible for the post of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the newly elected Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Maharashtra CM Oath Ceremony: Ajit Pawar To Be Deputy Chief Minister
There is speculation that two Deputies will take oath alongside Devendra Fadnavis – Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Ajit Pawar spent much of his political career in the shadow of his uncle Sharad Pawar, a political heavyweight. In the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly Elections, where the Mahayuti alliance secured a thumping majority, Ajit Pawar’s NCP won 41 seats, proving that the decision to break away from his uncle was a well-calculated move.

While Sarita is Devendra Fadnavis’ mother’s name, Gangadhar is his father’s. How Devendra Fadnavis Accepting No.2 Rule Cleared His Way To The Top
When the BJP-led Mahayuti suffered a big setback in the Lok Sabha election this year, few would have imagined how much the picture would change months later. The 2024 state polls saw the BJP post its best-ever score in Maharashtra, winning 132 out of 148 seats it contested. The Mahayuti’s tally reached 230 in the 288-member Assembly.

But government formation is always a tall task when multiple allies are involved. Eknath Shinde’s Sena wanted to keep the Chief Minister post and argued that the election was won under his leadership. But the BJP put its foot down and the legislators rallied behind Devendra Fadnavis, citing how he took a backseat in 2022 and the need to reward him for leading the party to the mammoth mandate. Mr Fadnavis had once said he is a “modern Abhimanyu” who knows how to break the Chakravyuh. His Chakravyuh demanded patience, loyalty and sacrifice. He delivered all three, and came out stronger.

Israeli Drones Use Sounds Of Crying Babies To Lure Palestinians Out Of Camps

Israeli Drones Use Sounds Of Crying Babies To Lure Palestinians Out Of Camps

Israeli forces in Gaza have deployed quadcopter drones, playing the sounds of crying babies and distressed women, to draw Palestinians out of their homes in open areas where they can be targeted. “In mid-April, we were informed that Israeli quadcopters were emitting bizarre sounds, including baby sounds or women screaming,” Maha Hussaini, Euro-Med Human Rights monitor, told Al Jazeera.

“I went personally to Nuseirat and I interviewed several Palestinians separately and the testimonies were almost identical,” she said.

The drones were “playing sounds of screaming women” to “lure citizens out of their homes and to find someone to shoot,” she said. This was confirmed by the hospital reports.

“There were cases of people getting injured by these quad captors after going out to figure out what was the sound to try to help,” she said.

Nuseirat resident Mohammad Nabhan recalled hearing a woman shouting “help” alongside the cries of a baby. On realising that the sounds emanated from a quadcopter, Mr Nabhan warned his cousin, “Don’t fall for it; it’s a sound system.” Abu Anas Al-Shahrour, a neighbour, heard the cries of distress and went out to help but was shot in the head.

Other incidents across Gaza, in Khan Younis, and the occupied West Bank, included recordings of a child crying, “I want my mother,” and threats warning Palestinians “will die” if they resist.

Quadcopters, remote-controlled drones, have been extensively used by Israeli forces since the escalation of hostilities on October 7. These devices have been utilised for surveillance, individual targeting, and crowd dispersal. In January, witnesses reported quadcopters opening fire on hundreds of civilians who had gathered to collect food on al-Rasheed Street in Gaza City.

The drones’ sound systems have also broadcast Hebrew and Arabic songs, sounds of tank movements, and even the familiar calls of local vendors.

The Health Ministry in Gaza has reported nearly 45,000 deaths and the entire population has been displaced amid relentless Israeli bombardment. Civilians are facing acute shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Hospitals, schools, and homes lie in ruins, and the potential spread of disease in overcrowded shelters looms large.

This method of psychological warfare has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups. The “General’s Plan”, allegedly aiming to depopulate northern Gaza under the guise of fighting Hamas, has been labelled a war crime by the ICC, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Centre Blocks 59,000 WhatsApp Accounts Used For Digital Fraud

New Delhi:

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), a wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has identified and blocked more than 1,700 Skype IDs and 59,000 WhatsApp accounts used for digital fraud, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar also stated that the ‘Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System,’ launched under I4C in 2021, enables immediate reporting of financial frauds to prevent the siphoning off of funds by fraudsters and so far, over Rs 3,431 crore has been saved in more than 9.94 lakh complaints.

“The I4C has pro-actively identified and blocked more than 1,700 Skype IDs and 59,000 WhatsApp accounts used for digital fraud,” Kumar said in response to a written question.

As of November 15, 2024, more than 6.69 lakh SIM cards and 1.32 lakh IMEIs, as reported by police authorities, have been blocked by the government.

The minister further explained that to strengthen the mechanism for addressing cyber crimes, including digital fraud, the central government and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have developed a system to identify and block incoming international spoofed calls that display Indian mobile numbers, making them appear as though they originate within India.

Kumar noted that such spoofed calls have been used by cyber criminals in recent cases of fake digital arrests, FedEx scams, and impersonation as government or police officials.

Directions have been issued to TSPs to block such incoming international spoofed calls. Additionally, a State-of-the-Art Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) has been established at I4C, where representatives from major banks, financial institutions, payment aggregators, TSPs, IT intermediaries, and law enforcement agencies from States and UTs collaborate to ensure immediate action and seamless cooperation in tackling cybercrime.

The minister said a suspect registry of identifiers of cyber criminals has been launched by I4C on September 10, 2024 in collaboration with banks and financial institutions and has introduced a new feature ‘Report and Check Suspect’ on the portal cybercrime.gov.in.

This facility provides citizens a search option to search I4C’s repository of identifiers of cyber criminals through ‘suspect search’.

Chief Justice Opts Out Of Case Related To Poll Body Chief Appointment

Chief Justice Opts Out Of Case Related To Poll Body Chief Appointment

New Delhi:

Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has recused himself from petitions against a law removing the holder of India’s highest judicial post from a panel that appoints the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. The matter was sent to another bench and hearings will begin January 6 next year.

Chief Justice Khanna, then a Justice of the Supreme Court, was part of the two-judge bench that began hearing those petitions in March.

Last year the Supreme Court directed the naming of the election commissioners be made ‘transparent’ by referring their appointments to a three-member panel consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice.

However, months later the government, in a contentious move, introduced the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners bill that dropped the Chief Justice from that panel and replaced him/her with a union minister to be picked by the PM.

The move was challenged – days before the April-June federal election by opposition politicians, like the Congress’ Jaya Thakur, and civil society groups, such as the Association for Democratic Reforms.

No Rooms, Meals For Bangladeshi Tourists In Tripura: Hotel Association

No Rooms, Meals For Bangladeshi Tourists In Tripura: Hotel Association

Tripura Congress members protest against Chief Adviser of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus

Guwahati:
Hotels and restaurants in Tripura will not temporarily accept bookings from tourists from Bangladesh, the top association of the travel sector in the northeast state said in a statement, amid the strain in diplomatic ties between the two neighbours.

Here’s your 10-point cheat sheet to this big story

  1. While hotels will not give rooms to Bangladeshi tourists, restaurants will not serve meals to them, the All-Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association said in the statement.

  2. The statement comes on a day when hundreds of people took out a massive rally around the Bangladeshi mission in Tripura’s capital Agartala, protesting against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh as well as attacks on minorities in the neighbouring country.

  3. Over 50 protesters allegedly entered the premises of the Bangladeshi mission in Agartala, leading to panic among the officials and staff at the complex.

  4. India has described the incident as “deeply regrettable”, and said diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances.

  5. The Bangladesh interim government in a post on X said it “deeply resents the violent attack into Assistant High Commission in Agartala this afternoon, vandalization of the Mission premise and desecration of the Bangladesh flag.”

  6. A six-member delegation of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity, which held a protest rally over atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, was allowed inside the assistant high commission to submit a memorandum. “However, there was no breach of peace or trouble inside the Bangladesh mission as we drove out the protesters immediately,” senior police officer Chiranjib Chakraborty told news agency PTI.

  7. India has said the interim government in Bangladesh must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities. India has expressed serious concern over the “surge” of extremist rhetoric and increasing incidents of violence against Hindus.

  8. Mr Das, arrested for alleged sedition, should be dealt with in a just, fair and transparent manner, India has said.

  9. Ties between India and Bangladesh came under strain after the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus came to power following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August.

  10. Reports of attacks on Hindus continue to come from Bangladesh. Last week, a journalist, Munni Saha, was taken into custody after she was targeted by radical Islamist forces and surrounded by a mob.
