“Trying To Make Bangladesh Part Of India”: Woman Journalist Mobbed In Dhaka

Kolkata:

A mob surrounded senior Bangladesh journalist Munni Saha in Dhaka last night and accused her of spreading misinformation and “doing everything to make Bangladesh a part of India”. Ms Saha was heckled as she kept saying, “This is also my country”. Eventually, a police team came and took her into custody.

According to reports in Bangladesh media, Ms Saha was wanted in a case linked to a student’s death during the anti-reservation protests in the neighbouring country that led to its former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. Police said Ms Saha was rescued from Dhaka’s Kawran Bazar area, where a mob had surrounded her.

Rezaul Karim Mallik, a senior officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star Newspaper, “People handed her over to the police. She suffered a panic attack. We have released her after considering her health condition and the fact that she is a woman journalist.” Ms Saha has been asked to seek bail from court and comply with police summons in the future.

In a video that has now gone viral, Ms Saha is seen surrounded by a mob. A voice is heard accusing her of misguiding people regarding the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles mutiny that claimed 57 lives. “You are doing everything you can to make this country a part of India. The blood of students is on your hands,” the journalist is told as she nods in denial.

“How can you be a citizen of this country and harm this country,” she is told. Ms Saha responds, “How have I harmed? This is also my country.”

The 55-year-old journalist is the former news head of Bengali channel ATN News. After the Sheikh Hasina administration was toppled, she and several other journalists were charged with crimes against humanity.

The heckling of Ms Saha comes amid concerns over the condition of minority Hindus in Bangladesh after the regime change. A Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested in Dhaka last week after a Hindu community’s protest demanding legal protection and a ministry for minority affairs. The Hindu priest, who was earlier associated with ISKCON, faces a sedition case, allegedly for his remarks on the targeting of Hindus.

ISKCON has now said that two more monks, Adipurush Shyam Das and Ranganath Das Brahmachari, have been arrested after they met Chinmoy Krishna Das. The vice-president of ISKCON Kolkata also said that rioters had vandalised the ISKCON centre in Bangladesh.

Following Hasina’s ouster, an interim government helmed by Grameen Bank founder and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken charge. Over the past few months, multiple reports of minority Hindus being targeted in Bangladesh have emerged.

In the aftermath of the priest’s arrest, India expressed concern over the rise of “extremist rhetoric, increasing incidents of violence and provocation” in Bangladesh.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that India has consistently raised the issue of targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities with the Bangladesh government. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has urged the interim government in Bangladesh to take steps to protect minorities.

“Every Attack Makes Us Stronger”: Gautam Adani Responds To US Allegations

“Every Attack Makes Us Stronger”: Gautam Adani Responds To US Allegations

Gautam Adani addresses the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards

Jaipur:

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani today responded to the legal matter involving the US Department of Justice as a challenge which the Group has faced “not for the first time”.

“As most of you would have read, less than two weeks back, we faced a set of allegations from the US about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. This is not the first time we have faced such challenges. What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group,” Mr Adani said at the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards in Rajasthan’s Jaipur.

“The fact is that despite a lot of the vested reporting, no one from the Adani side has been charged with any violation of the FCPA or any conspiracy to obstruct justice. Yet, in today’s world, negativity spreads faster than facts – and as we work through the legal process, I want to reconfirm our absolute commitment to world class regulatory compliance,” Mr Adani said.

He told the gathering that despite the successes of the Adani Group, the challenges it has faced were even bigger. “These challenges have not broken us. Instead, they have defined us. They have made us tougher and give us the unshakeable belief that after every fall, we will rise again, stronger, and more resilient than before.”

He recalled the attack by US-based short seller Hindenburg Research in January 2023.

“… Just as we were getting ready to launch our follow-on public offering (FPO), we faced a short-selling attack initiated from abroad. This was not a typical financial strike; it was a double hit – targeting our financial stability and pulling us into a political controversy. All of this was further amplified by certain media with vested interests. But even in the face of such adversity, our commitment to our principles remained strong,” Mr Adani said.

“After successfully raising Rs 20,000 crore from India’s largest-ever FPO, we made the extraordinary decision to return the proceeds. We then further demonstrated our resilience by raising capital from several international sources and proactively reducing our debt to EBITDA ratio to below 2.5 times, an unmatched metric in the global infrastructure space.

“Moreover, our all-time record financial results in the same year showcased our commitment to operational excellence. Not a single Indian or foreign credit rating agency downgraded us. Finally, the Supreme Court of India’s affirmation of our actions validated our approach,” Mr Adani said.

Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and senior executive Vneet Jaain are clear of any bribery charges per the US Department of Justice, the Adani Group has said.

Adani Green, a firm under the Adani Group, had also called media reports on the US legal matter as “incorrect”, in a stock exchange filing.

The indictment by the Department of Justice includes five counts, but the first and fifth counts – conspiracy to violate the FCPA and conspiracy to obstruct justice – do not mention the three directors, Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and Vneet Jaain, the Adani Group said.

The Adani Group statement said that a “flawed understanding” of the US indictment by various media, foreign as well as Indian, has led to “incorrect and reckless reporting” that the three Adani Group directors faced corruption and bribery charges.

The US indictment relies only on claims that bribes were discussed or promised. It did not offer any evidence that Indian government officials received bribes from Adani executives, the group said.

Cyclone Fengal Warning For Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Landfall Likely Today

Cyclone Fengal Warning For Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Landfall Likely Today

Chennai:

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified Friday into a cyclone – named Fengal, pronounced ‘Feinjal’ – and is likely to make a landfall close to Puducherry on Saturday afternoon.

It will cross the Tamil Nadu coast between Karaikal and Mamallapuram, the India Meteorological Department said, with a wind speed of 70-80 km per hour with gusts up 90 kmph.

The weather office has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry. Also, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts and Karaikal area.

“The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest at 13 kph in the past six hours (and has) intensified into Cyclonic Storm Fengal… at 2.30 pm (on November 29) it lay 270 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 300 km southeast of Chennai,” the IMD said.

“It is likely to move west-northwest and cross north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram (but closer to Puducherry) as a Cyclonic Storm during the afternoon 20th November…”

Tamil Nadu minister for revenue and disaster management KKSSR Ramachandran held a meet at the state emergency operations centre here with senior officials to review preparatory and relief measures.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal till further notice. More than 4,000 boats have returned to shore and 2,229 relief camps were ready for use if needed, the state government said.

Dr S Balachandran, the Director of the Chennai Meteorological Centre, warned of moderate rainfall over northern Tamil Nadu and coastal districts, with some places likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. One or two places will also receive extremely heavy rainfall, he said.

Across Tamil Nadu, the Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Viluppuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore districts have been placed on red alert, as has Puducherry.

An orange alert is in place in Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal districts.

Interior districts have also been warned of rainfall as Fengal moves inland after Sunday.

The impact of Cyclone Fengal has already been felt in the southern state.

Ahead of the impact, state capital Chennai is experiencing high tides and gusty winds. The Tamil Nadu government has advised people to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

On Thursday heavy rain caused widespread damage to paddy crops across 800 acres in Nagapattinam district. And, this morning, the threat of heavy rain prompted schools and colleges in the Chennai, Chengalpattu and Cuddalore areas to shut for the day. They will remain shut on Saturday as well.

The Navy is working closely with the state government to ensure rapid response.

Vehicles are being loaded with relief materials, including food, drinking water, and medicines, while specialised Flood Relief Teams (FRTs) are being positioned in vulnerable areas.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and his Puducherry counterpart, N Rangasamy, have chaired meetings to assess preparedness for the heavy rains and the storm. Mr Stalin has said his government is ready to face the storm and also requested the public to take precautions while outside their homes.

This is the second cyclone in the post-monsoon season to affect the Indian coast after Cyclone Dana, which crossed Odisha as a ‘severe’ category storm in late October.

Raj Kundra's House Raided By Enforcement Directorate In Porn Content Case

Raj Kundra's House Raided By Enforcement Directorate In Porn Content Case

The probe agency also raided other individuals allegedly involved in the case.

Mumbai:

Businessman Raj Kundra’s house and offices were raided today by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today as part of a money laundering probe related to the production and distribution of pornographic content through mobile apps.

Mr Kundra, the husband of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, has been under the ED’s lens for months, following allegations that he was a key player in a scheme that monetised explicit content streamed via the now-defunct ‘Hotshots’ application. The app, previously available on platforms like Apple and Google Play, was removed after public and legal scrutiny.

The probe agency also raided other individuals allegedly involved in the case. The operation is believed to have unearthed financial links pointing to the laundering of proceeds generated from the explicit content streamed through mobile platforms.

Mr Kundra’s legal battles are not new. In 2021, he was arrested by Mumbai police in a related case involving obscene material and was later released on bail.

The ED is also probing his alleged involvement in a crypto-ponzi scheme spearheaded by Amit Bhardwaj, the mastermind behind the Gain Bitcoin scam. Earlier this year, the ED attached assets worth Rs 98 crore belonging to Mr Kundra and Ms Shetty, claiming they were acquired using proceeds from illicit activities, including the Gain Bitcoin scam.

Jagan Reddy Rejects Charges On Adani, Says Power Deal Between Government Units

Jagan Reddy Rejects Charges On Adani, Says Power Deal Between Government Units

Mr Reddy said an offer of power was made to several states.

After the Tamil Nadu government and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Reddy has rejected US charges that government officials took bribes for a power purchase agreement. The president of the YSR Congress Party has said that the deal was between government agencies and no private parties were involved.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mr Reddy said the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), which is a central government-run public sector unit (PSU) made an offer for power to several states, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, at Rs 2.49 per unit. Pointing out that Andhra Pradesh had never bought power at a cheaper rate, the former chief minister said that other incentives were also offered to the state, including some waivers, which would have saved the government money.

The YSRCP chief emphasised that the contract was between SECI, the Andhra Pradesh government and the state power distribution company and there was no question of any other agency intervening. He said that some media houses with political motives are putting out names suggesting bribery and that he would sue Eenadu and Andhra Jyothy, which he described as controlled by Chief Minister and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, for Rs 100 crore.

Mr Reddy said no bribery was involved and, responding to a question on whether Mr Naidu could cancel the deal, the former chief minister said it would not be wise to do so.

Asked about his meetings with Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, Mr Reddy said Mr Adani has several ongoing projects in Andhra Pradesh and it is never unusual for the head of a state to be meeting with industry leaders. He said the meetings are intended to build a relationship of confidence and trust.

Earlier, the BJD and the Tamil Nadu government had also rejected the allegations.

The former Energy Minister of Odisha, Pratap Keshari Deb, had said that the agreement was to procure 500 MW of renewable energy from the SECI at the lowest rates discovered by the PSU. “There was no engagement with any private party whatsoever, including the Adani Group,” he had said earlier this month.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji said the state has an understanding to buy power only from a firm owned by the Union government.

“I would like to first clarify that as regards TN Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), there has been no kind of commercial relationship with Mr Adani’s company during the past three years (after the DMK formed the government in May 2021),” Mr Balaji had said.

‘Fully Compliant’

The Adani Group has firmly denied a US government department report alleging bribery for power contracts.

“All possible legal recourse will be sought. The Adani Group has always upheld and is steadfastly committed to maintaining the highest standards of governance, transparency and regulatory compliance across all jurisdictions of its operations. We assure our stakeholders, partners and employees that we are a law-abiding organisation, fully compliant with all laws,” the Group said in a statement.

Senior lawyer and former Attorney General of India Mukul Rohatgi has also punched holes in the allegations against the Adani Group and said Mr Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani have not been accused of bribery or obstructing justice in the US.

Elon Musk Mocks Federal Workers On X, They Get Hate Posts, Death Threats

Elon Musk Mocks Federal Workers On X, They Get Hate Posts, Death Threats

Imagine the fear of becoming a personal target of the richest man in the world – and his followers. That’s what federal government employees are feeling after Elon Musk publicised their names.

As the co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk has suggested mass-firings as he is publicly identifying “fake jobs” and associated federal employees on X.

Last week Elon Musk reposted the names and titles of employees holding climate-related government positions on X. These posts are made from an account with the handle Fentasyl and the name “Datahazard,”. They have received quite some negative attention with one woman even deleting her social media accounts.

According to CNN, current federal employees are apprehensive about being personal targets.

“These tactics are aimed at sowing terror and fear at federal employees. It’s intended to make them fearful that they will become afraid to speak up,” said Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees.

But this is Musk’s habitual way of operating where he singles out individuals who stand in his way.

“It’s his way of intimidating people to either quit or also send a signal to all the other agencies that ‘you’re next’,” said Mary “Missy” Cummings who unintentionally provoked Musk by criticising Tesla when she was at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Cummings said that she received death threats and a slew of attacks and had to relocate temporarily before moving houses. “He intended for them, for people just like this, to be intimidated and just go ahead and quit so he didn’t have to fire them. So his plan, to some extent, is working,” she said.

One of Musk’s posts on X reads, “I don’t think the US taxpayers should pay for the employment of a ‘Director of Climate Diversification (she/her)’ at the US International Development Finance Corporation,” which he posted alongside a screenshot of the employee’s name and location.

Vivek Ramaswamy has said that, “Most federal employees, like most human beings, are fundamentally good people and deserve to be treated with respect, but the real problem is the bureaucracy”, although he did not comment on employees being singled-out by Musk.
