MK Stalin Asks Centre To Recall Tamil Nadu Governor In Row Over Anthem

MK Stalin Asks Centre To Recall Tamil Nadu Governor In Row Over Anthem

Chennai:

Tensions between the Tamil Nadu government and governor rose significantly on Friday after Chief Minister MK Stalin said a line with the word ‘Dravida’ was skipped when the Tamil anthem was sung at an event attended by Governor RN Ravi. Mr Stalin accused the governor of insulting national unity and asked the Centre to recall him.

The skipping of the line added fuel to a raging fire over Mr Ravi attending the golden jubilee celebrations of Chennai Doordarshan, which also marked the culmination of the Hindi Month. Chief Minister Stalin had objected to this and said celebrating Hindi in a non-Hindi-speaking state is seen as an attempt to belittle other languages.

The Tamil Anthem, the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, is sung at the beginning of every government programme and the word ‘Dravida’ refers to the people in the southern states. A group from Doordarshan, while singing the anthem, left out the line which has the word in it.

Hitting out at the governor, Mr Stalin, who is also the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), said Mr Ravi is “unfit” for his post and asked whether he would call for ‘Dravida’ being skipped in the national anthem.

Pointing out that skipping the word in the Tamil anthem violates the state’s law, Mr Stalin accused the governor of insulting national unity and the people of many races in the guise of celebrating Hindi.

“Will the governor who suffers from a Dravidian allergy ask them to leave out ‘Dravida’ in the national anthem? The Union Government should immediately recall the Governor who is deliberately insulting Tamil Nadu and the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu,” Mr Stalin wrote in Tamil in a post on X.

“Ready To Pay Back Lenders Before Taking A Single Rupee Out”: Byju's Founder

“Ready To Pay Back Lenders Before Taking A Single Rupee Out”: Byju's Founder

In the latest statement, the lenders have raised their total claim to $1.5 billion.

New Delhi:

Byju Raveendran, the founder of troubled edtech firm Byju’s, on Thursday said that he is willing to pay back all the money owed to lenders if they are willing to work with him.

During a two-and-a-half-hour call with the media, Mr Raveendran said lenders will not get any money if the process of insolvency against the company continues.

“If they are willing to work with me, I am willing to give them money back before I take a single rupee out. We paid $140 million but they wanted the entire $1.2 billion which we had already committed or invested by then. There is no way we could have given them back for a long time. Most lenders wanted to settle but one or two wanted to make a killing out of it,” Mr Raveendran said.

At present, Byju’s is undergoing insolvency proceedings, triggered after the BCCI approached the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal to recover its Rs 158.9-crore dues. The company settled the dispute with BCCI after paying the entire dues following which NCLAT revoked the insolvency proceedings.

However, US lenders through their agent Glas Trust challenged the NCLAT order in the Supreme Court which restored the insolvency proceedings against the edtech firm.

Byju’s has raised a $1.2 billion Term Loan B (TLB)– a loan which is issued by institutional investors –through its holding company Byju’s Alpha, from US-based lenders.

The trouble for Think and Learn, which owns the Byju’s brand, began after the lenders through Glas Trust approached Delaware Court of Chancery alleging default in the payments under the loan agreement and sought early payment of the $1.2-billion TLB.

The US-based lenders through Glas have filed claims of $1.35 billion dues in Indian courts during ongoing insolvency proceedings against the edtech firm.

In the latest statement, the lenders have raised their total claim to $1.5 billion.

Mr Raveendran said that no money raised from US lenders has come to India as it also needs permission from the Reserve Bank of India.

He said that there are some aggressive lenders who initiated a case against the company and they don’t care about stakeholders in the business as it is their business model to make money out of distress.

Mr Raveendran said that all the deals and acquisitions were approved by the Byju’s board, which included leading investors.

“Most of the acquisitions were brought in by the investors and we got carried away. Investors wanted us to launch in 40 countries together. Investors celebrated when we raised a $1.2-billion loan,” Mr Raveendran said.

Byju’s board member representing Peak XV Partners, earlier known as Sequoia Capital India, Prosus and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative resigned from the company in June 2023.

Mr Raveendran said that investors resigned from the board after Glas Trust filed a case in the Delaware court assuming that the liability to pay back the loan would fall on them.

He said that, over the years, only managers have left the company and five out of six owners of Byju’s are still with the firm.

Mr Raveendran said that he is hopeful of making a big comeback after the insolvency issue is resolved.

“Our subsidiary has not taken any hits. At a consolidated level, we will have more than Rs 5,000 crore in revenue. We are struggling in the core business which has become zero. Still, there are 200 million kids who come to our platform every month. We have to revamp and revive,” he said.

Mr Raveendran said that whatever may be the result of litigation, he will continue to teach and nobody could stop him from teaching students.

“Investors will come back when they see value,” he said.

US Woman, 32, Arrested For Allegedly Chopping Mother Into Pieces And Cooking Body Parts

US Woman, 32, Arrested For Allegedly Chopping Mother Into Pieces And Cooking Body Parts

A woman in the United States has been arrested on allegations of killing her mother and dismembering her body. According to The Independent, the 32-year-old woman, identified as Torilena May Fields, was initially charged on Wednesday with abuse of corpse, tampering with evidence and obstructing governmental operations when she was arrested in connection to the death of her mother, Trudy Fields. She allegedly stabbed and shot her mother multiple times. She is also accused of torturing and killing a dog. Authorities have hinted that further charges could be added as the investigation progresses.

According to The Independent, authorities on Wednesday said that when the worker hired to work on Trudy Fields’s home arrived at the property he couldn’t find the homeowner but then came across a dismembered body in the backyard. At first, he thought the remains were Trudy Fields’ and called the Kentucky State Police.

Officers then responded to the scene and found a woman’s body on a blood-stained mattress. Cops then spotted a second blood-stained mattress that had been dragged toward the back of the house.

After finding another woman inside the house, the troopers attempted to speak with her, but she allegedly refused to acknowledge them or allow them entry, forcing them to procure search warrants.

“Units responded and found a dead female in the backyard,” KSP Trooper David Jones said in an arrest citation. “Tried to make contact with somebody at the house. The house was locked up. They backed up, and set up a perimeter. We had other units respond. Ended up getting a search warrant for the residence,” he added, per the outlet.

Then, members of the state police’s Special Response Team found Torilena Fields, 32, alone in the house. Police gave her multiple commands to leave her home, but she allegedly refused to comply, according to an arrest document.

Cops were eventually forced to remove the 32-year-old from her home. After taking her into custody, they discovered that parts had been removed from the body outside and were stuffed into a folded-up mattress. When they arrested Fields, she had blood on her face, hands and clothing, and when they entered the house, they found a stainless steel pot containing body parts that appeared to have been cooked in an oven.

The worker who discovered the body told the authorities that the 32-year-old had been on the property during one of his previous visits and had been “casting spells on them and was being confrontational.”

Fields was also reportedly under the influence of drugs when they arrested her. She is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, torture of a dog or cat, and obstructing governmental operations. She is being held at the Bourbon Count Detention Center on a $1.5 million bond.

Shaheen Afridi's First Reaction To Pakistan Test Team Snub Leaves Fans Intrigued | Cricket News

Shaheen Afridi's First Reaction To Pakistan Test Team Snub Leaves Fans Intrigued | Cricket News

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi wished Shan Masood-led side to make a strong comeback in the second Test against England in Multan. Shaheen was among the four players including Babar Azam who were released from the squad for the remaining two Tests of the series. Pakistan also released Naseem Shah and Sarfaraz Ahmed apart from Shaheen and Babar. “Wishing Team Pakistan the best of luck! Rooting for a strong comeback. We’re all cheering for you!” Shaheen wrote on X.

The changes to Pakistan’s squad were made by a newly-formed selection committee, formed hours after the hosts’ suffered an embarrassing loss by an innings and 47 runs to England in the first Test at Multan. Pakistan are 0-1 behind in the three-match Test series against England and are also at the bottom of the ongoing World Test Championship standings.

A statement from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said taking into consideration the current form and fitness of key players and looking ahead to Pakistan’s future assignments in the 2024-25 international cricket season, the selectors have decided to give rest to Babar, Shaheen, Naseem and Sarfaraz.

Babar had not scored a Test half-century since 2022 and has seen a dip in form in a year where he was made captain and then quit the post after Pakistan suffered a group-stage exit in this year’s T20 World Cup in June. Shaheen, meanwhile, has struggled to find his wicket-taking groove in Tests since returning from a knee injury.

The second Test between Pakistan and England will be played on the same pitch as the series opener in Multan from Tuesday.

Pakistan squad for second and third Tests: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Haseebullah (wicket-keeper), Kamran Ghulam, Mehran Mumtaz, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Rizwan (wicket-keeper), Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha and Zahid Mehmood.
