Miss Teen USA Resigns 2 Days After Miss USA Gave Up Her Title

Miss Teen USA Resigns 2 Days After Miss USA Gave Up Her Title

She said that she was”excited to continue my advocacy for education and acceptance”.

UmaSofia Srivastava, Miss Teen USA 2023, on Wednesday, gave up her crown, just two days after Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt relinquished her title. In a statement shared to her Instagram, the Mexican-Indian American teen provided a cryptic reason for her resignation, stating that “my personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organisation.”

The 17-year-old wrote that this wasn’t how she saw her “reign coming to a close,” and expressed gratitude for all the support from her family, state directors, fellow contestants, and fans since winning her state title. She wrote that she would always “look back on my time as Miss NJ Teen USA fondly”, adding that the experience of representing her state as a “first-generation Mexican-Indian American at the national level was fulfilling in itself.”

The New Jersey teenager said that she was “excited to continue my advocacy for education and acceptance” through her multilingual children’s book, ‘The White Jaguar’ and with “the organisations that I have had the privilege to work with long before I started competing, namely The Lotus Petal Foundation and the Bridge of Books Foundation”. She is currently working on a “new writing project.”

Ms Srivastava further mentioned that she would soon apply to colleges, “looking forward to the rest of the year as I finish 11th grade as part of the National Honour Society”, adding that her “academic career has been defined by hard work and my hard work alone.”

Concluding, she thanked those who supported her for “who I am and have always been, not for who I’ve momentarily become.” She counted herself lucky for having had “the privilege of this experience.”

“I know that the story of my life will truly be incredible,” she added.

Though Ms Srivastava’s sudden resignation is unusual, the timing is even more curious. It coincides with Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt’s recent return of her own crown. Ms Voight, who was crowned in September 2023, revealed in an Instagram post, “In life, I strongly value the importance of making decisions that feel best for you and your mental health.”

All of this suggests that there may be developments brewing within the pageant company, once owned by former US President Donald Trump (from 1996 to 2015).

US Police Arrest Dozens From Pro-Palestinian University Encampment: Report

US Police Arrest Dozens From Pro-Palestinian University Encampment: Report

On Tuesday, Joe Biden condemned a “ferocious surge” in anti-Semitism.

Washington:

Washington police cleared an encampment of pro-Palestinian protesters at George Washington University on Wednesday, authorities said, making several pre-dawn arrests.

Just after 4:00 am (0800), hundreds of officers moved in on a university quad, making arrests and using pepper spray, the student-run GW Hatchet newspaper reported. CNN said around three dozen people were arrested.

Police remained on the scene around 10:00 am, an AFP reporter saw, as tents were being dragged toward a garbage truck and a student held a poster reading “Free Palestine” on the sidewalk.

The arrests came as the mayor and police chief from the nation’s capital were expected to testify in front of Congress later in the day about why the encampment — which had entered its second week — had taken so long to clear.

However, after the encampment was cleared, Republicans who control the House Oversight Committee said they were canceling the hearing.

“It was unfortunate the situation at GW forced the Oversight Committee to act; however it was apparent that the DC police force was not going to do their job,” Representative James Comer said in a statement.

The police department said in a statement that it had tried to “deescalate tensions” without arrests, but that based on “incidents and information, there has been a gradual escalation in the volatility of the protest.”

Campus protests have sprung up across the country in recent weeks, with students demonstrating against the war in Gaza and calling on universities to cut direct or indirect financial ties with US weapons manufacturers and Israeli institutions.

The at-times raucous rallies have rocked colleges. Some Jewish students have reported threats and anti-Semitism, while pro-Israel counter-protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles, physically attacked demonstrators at an encampment.

Both President Joe Biden and universities have tried to walk a fine line between free speech rights and concerns about intimidation.

On Tuesday, Biden condemned a “ferocious surge” in anti-Semitism in a speech at the Capitol, saying “there’s no place on any campus in America — any place in America — for anti-Semitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind.”

Demonstrators — including some Jewish student organizers — have said they denounced acts of anti-Semitism, and accuse their detractors of conflating criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism.

They’ve also criticized what they say is a heavy handed police response — with more than 2,000 students arrested nationwide — and said harassment of Muslims, Palestinians and Jewish students opposed to the war are being ignored.

The unrest has continued into spring graduation ceremonies, where at the University of Michigan students unfurled Palestinian flags and launched into chants.

Columbia, the epicenter of the demonstrations, on Monday canceled its main graduation ceremony.

The Ivy League school in New York, where at least 100 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested last week, cited security concerns.

Origin Of India-Canada Friction Is “Lack Of…”: Indian Envoy

Origin Of India-Canada Friction Is “Lack Of…”: Indian Envoy

Ottawa:

India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma on Tuesday said that the origin of the friction between New Delhi and Ottawa is the “lack of understanding of India’s concern” over a “decades-old issue (Khalistan) that has re-emerged” on foreign soil.

Speaking at an event at the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations, he added that it was “a big red line” for India.

Terming the pro-Khalistan extremists in Canada as foreigners since they hold Canadian citizenship as India doesn’t allow dual citizenship, Mr Verma said, “The foreigners having an evil eye on the territorial integrity of India. That is a big red line for India. Indians will decide the fate of India, not foreigners. If those Indians that are living abroad want to decide the fate of India, then they better go back and participate in the election process in India.”

Meanwhile, the three Indian nationals arrested last week in connection with the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar appeared before the Surrey Provincial Court in British Columbia. Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karan Brar were arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Edmonton and have been charged with murder and conspiracy to murder.

On Monday, in a rebuttal to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement on the three arrests and that Canada was lax in giving visas, immigration minister Marc Miller said, “Let him speak his mind. It is just not correct.”

Back in Montreal, the high commissioner also pointed out that while the negative in the relationship grabs the headlines, there are many positives to the relationship – the most important one being trade. High Commissioner Verma said, “Trade has been going up despite political divergences.”

He pointed out how Canada has benefitted hugely from services exports to India, a country that itself is big in the services sector. He said Canada was one of the few countries that exports more services to India than it imports. Services exports to India drove up Canada’s overall exports in 2022.  The overall trade in services between India and Canada was over USD 9 billion a total trade figure of almost USD 19 billion.

India’s largest import from Canada is coal briquettes – close to USD 850 million last year. This has declined over the last few years due to India exploring alternative sources of energy to eliminate dependency on fossil fuels. This is followed by the import of lentils largely from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada and followed by a huge import of diamonds.

India’s largest export to Canada is medicines, followed by shrimps and smartphones. Basmati rice exports from India to Canada went up by 14 per cent over the last year.

Celebrities, Influencers Equally Liable For Deceptive Ads: Supreme Court

Celebrities, Influencers Equally Liable For Deceptive Ads: Supreme Court

The bench said the idea behind the declaration was to esnure responsibilty.

New Delhi:

Taking a firm stand on the issue of misleading advertisements, the Supreme Court has said that celebrities and social media influencers are equally liable if the commercial for the product or service featuring them is found to be deceptive.

During its hearing in the Patanjali Ayurved misleading advertisements case – in which it also pulled up the Indian Medical Association earlier in the day – the court also said broadcasters will have to file a self-declaration form before carrying any advertisements, stating that the commercials comply with the relevant rules.

Continuing its hearing in the case on Tuesday, a bench of Justices Hima Kohli and A Amanullah referred to the Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022 and pointed out that Guideline 13 requires a person to have enough information or experience with the product or service he or she is endorsing and ensure that it is not deceptive.

“The provisions are meant to serve the consumers and ensure that the consumer is made aware of the kind of product being purchased from the market, particularly in the health and food sectors,” the bench said and ruled that celebrities and social media influencers are equally liable for misleading advertisements of products or services featuring them.

The bench emphasised that ministries need to set up procedures to encourage the consumer to lodge a complaint and then it  is taken to its logical conclusion instead of “simply being endorsed or marked”.

Until that happens, the court ordered broadcasters to file a self-declaration form before carrying any advertisements, stating that the commercial complies with the relevant rules and codes.

“As a remedy, we deem it appropriate to direct that a self-declaration be obtained before an advertisement is permitted. Self-declaration is to be obtained for advertisement on the lines of 1994 Cable TV Network Rules, Advertising Code et cetera,” the two-judge bench said.

The court said TV broadcasters can upload the declaration on the Broadcast Sewa portal and ordered that a portal should be set up for the print media within four weeks.

“We don’t want a lot of red tape. We don’t want to make it difficult for advertisers to advertise. We only want to make sure there is responsibility,” the court said.

“Enjoyed Seeing Myself Dance”: PM Modi Reacts To Viral Meme

“Enjoyed Seeing Myself Dance”: PM Modi Reacts To Viral Meme

New Delhi:

It was Narendra Modi versus Mamata Banerjee again, in identical memes that showed them dancing. What made the difference was the reaction. While the Bengal police started a hunt for the creator — and gathered much scorn from netizens — PM Modi applauded the “creativity” and said he “enjoyed” seeing himself dance.

“Like all of you, I also enjoyed seeing myself dance. Such creativity in peak poll season is truly a delight!” he posted, retweeting the meme that portrayed him shaking a leg to a popular Bengali number.

The meme on Ms Banerjee, that showed her dancing to her own speech, was met with a strong reaction from the Bengal police.

“You are directed to immediately disclose your identity including name and residence. If the information sought is not revealed, you shall be liable for legal action u/s 42 CrPC,” read a post from the Kolkata Police responding to the tweet.

The reaction on social media was stronger, with most people censoring the police. Many said that PM Modi has not reacted to the many jokes and cartoons and memes on him in this election season.

The meme on PM Modi had a caption that read, “Posting this video cuz I know that ‘THE DICTATOR’ is not going to get me arrested for this”.

For decades, elections in India have been accompanied by a laughter riot as cartoonists starting with RK Laxman poked fun at political leaders and the common man. In the age of social media, it was replaced by cartoons and memes, which brought crackdown from time to time.

In recent years, many have faced legal action across the country for posting content on leaders including Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

In Bengal, it started in 2012, with a professor of Kolkata’s premier Jadavpur University, Ambikesh Mahapatra, getting arrested for allegedly forwarding an email containing a cartoon of Ms Banerjee.

In 2019, a BJP youth wing member was arrested for posting a morphed photo of Ms Banerjee on Facebook.

In 2022, a 29-year-old YouTuber was arrested from Nadia district for allegedly creating memes on the Chief Minister. Calling the memes “derogatory”, the police said the complaint named seven other content creators.
