Key Accused In Kerala Organ Trade Case Tried to Sell Own Kidney: Cops

Hyderabad:

A man from Andhra Pradesh, said to the kingpin in a massive organ trade racket, has been arrested from Hyderabad. Bellamkonda Ram Prasad, 41, also known as Prathapan, was tasked with finding donors who would match recipients, the police said.  Investigations in the Nedumbassery case that surfaced in Kerala, indicated that Prasad facilitated over 60 per cent of donor matches — none resulted in rejection.

The police believe that he conducted preliminary testing at labs in Hyderabad to verify compatibility, a key point in transplantation.

A well-known real estate entrepreneur in the Hyderabad and Vijayawada, Prasad was arrested by the Kerala police from a hotel in Hyderabad.  The man, who allegedly played a key role in the Nedumbassery case as well as other similar rackets, has been taken to Kerala’s Aluva for questioning. The police zeroed in on him after questioning other suspects in the case.

Reports say Prasad roped in a large number of people in Andhra Pradesh for organ trafficking. Two Malayalis, Sabith Nasar, 30, from Thrissur and Sajith Shyamraj, 43, from Kalamassery, were taken into custody earlier.

After selling his own kidney in 2019, Sabith Nasar got involved in the racket. Following his statements, inquiries started in Hyderabad. The investigators found that the presence of a huge racket that operated across Iran, Kuwait, and Sri Lanka.

Vaibhav Saxena, the chief of Ernakulam district police, who is leading the Special Investigation Team probing the case, said Prasad had got in touch with the gang when he tried to sell his kidney. His health problems had barred him, after which he joined in the racket and became a procurer.

He later got in touch with Madhu, the gang’s alleged link in Iran, who is yet to be arrested. Recipients would approach Madhu, who would then work with Prasad to meet their requests, the police said. All the gang members in India have been arrested.

Investigation indicates that the donors – mostly from low-income families — were flown to Iran and lodged in apartments ahead of transplants, which took place at private medical facilities. Aadhaar cards and other documents were used to generate fake passports for them.

Upto Rs 6 lakh was given to donors, but middlemen made much more money.

Explained: Why RBI Keeps Gold Reserves In Foreign Vaults

Explained: Why RBI Keeps Gold Reserves In Foreign Vaults

A gold reserve is the gold held by a country’s central bank. (Representational)

The Reserve Bank of India transferred 100 metric tonnes of gold from the United Kingdom to domestic vaults in FY24, making it one of the largest gold movements since 1991, according to reports. The country’s total gold holding now stands at 822 metric tonnes in FY24, with a significant portion stored in foreign vaults, including the Bank of England.

This move comes amid the geopolitical tensions and the West’s freezing of Russian assets, which has heightened concerns about the security of overseas assets.

A gold reserve is the gold held by a country’s central bank, acting as a backup for financial promises and a store of value. India, like other nations, stores some of its gold reserves in foreign vaults to spread out risk and facilitate international trading.

Where does the RBI store its gold?

India’s gold reserves are primarily stored in the Bank of England, which is known for its stringent security protocols. The RBI also stores a portion of its gold reserves at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the United States.

Why does the RBI store its gold in foreign banks?

During India’s foreign exchange crisis in 1990-91, the country pledged some of its gold reserves to the Bank of England to secure a $405 million loan, according to reports. Even though the loan was paid back by November 1991, India decided to keep the gold in the UK for convenience.

Storing gold overseas makes it easier for India to trade, engage in swaps and earn returns. However, there are risks involved, especially during times of geopolitical tensions and war. The recent freezing of Russian assets by Western nations has raised worries about the safety of assets kept abroad and the RBI decision to shift a portion of the gold reserve to India could be prompted over these concerns.

Why does the RBI need so much gold?

With its big stash of gold, the RBI can help control local gold prices by using some of it in India. The bank regulator has been buying more gold lately, especially since many other countries are losing faith in the US dollar. Last financial year, the RBI added about 27.47 tonnes of gold to the total reserve, bringing it to 794.63 tonnes. The increased gold reserve works as a hedge against any financial crisis and to take measures to control inflation as well as currency devaluation.

7-Phase Lok Sabha Election Ends Today With PM Modi's Varanasi In Focus

7-Phase Lok Sabha Election Ends Today With PM Modi's Varanasi In Focus

New Delhi:

The seventh and final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha election begins today.

Fifty-seven seats across seven states – 13 in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, nine in Bengal, eight in Bihar, six in Odisha, four in Himachal Pradesh, and three in Jharkhand, as well as Chandigarh – will complete a mammoth exercise that began 55 days ago – on April 19.

Ahead of this phase of voting ex-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched a final attack on the BJP, writing a letter urging voters to make the most of a “final chance to ensure our democracy and Constitution are protected from repeated assaults by a despotic regime”.

PM’s Varanasi Bastion

Much of the focus in this phase will be on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat of Varanasi in UP, which he is hoping to win for a third straight time.

Mr Modi romped to victory in 2019 with nearly 6.8 lakh votes and more than 63 per cent of the vote share. He faces the Congress’ Ajay Rai.

The Prime Minister filed his nomination on May 14 accompanied by a phalanx of senior leaders from the BJP and its partners, including party boss JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma. This was after a flashy six km roadshow the evening before.

Mr Rai has contested each of the past three elections from the temple town; the past two as a Congress leader and the 2009 poll as a member of Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.

His best return was in 2019 – 1.5 lakh votes and around 14 per cent of the vote share.

Hindus make up around 75 per cent of Varanasi’s demographic and Muslims 20 per cent.

An estimated 10 per cent are from Scheduled Tribes while 0.7 are from Scheduled Castes. The rural-urban split of the population is 65 to 35 per cent.

Away from Varanasi, the spotlight will be split between Punjab and Bengal.

Battle For Punjab

There is an intriguing AAP vs Congress vs BJP battle in Punjab. The AAP and Congress are, on paper, part of the INDIA opposition bloc and are contesting as allies in neighbouring Delhi.

In Punjab, however, the two are ‘enemies’, a strange state of affairs replicated in Bengal, where the Congress and the Trinamool are rivals despite being INDIA members.

The ‘friendly fire’ contests have been criticised by the BJP, which has said the bloc’s failure to agree seat-share deals underlines its unstable nature and makes it a poor choice.

The battle for Punjab is complicated by the Akali Dal – a former BJP ally that walked out over farmers’ protests from 2020 that continue to simmer – fighting independently too.

In 2019 the Congress – then led by ex-Chief Minister Amarinder Singh – got eight seats.

The Akalis and BJP (then allies) got two each and the AAP got one.

Fast-forward three years and the AAP thumped the Congress in the state poll, winning 92 of 117 seats. A faction-ridden Congress got just 18, the Akalis three and the BSP got one.

Significantly, the BJP contested 73 and won just two. This was against the backdrop of farmers’ protests, which rumbles on to this day, suggesting it might struggle this time too.

Rumble In Bengal

Only nine of Bengal’s 42 seats will vote today. However, these include the prestigious Kolkata North and South seats and Diamond Harbour, which was won in 2014 and 2019 by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

Diamond Harbour was previously a CPIM bastion; the party held it from 1967 to 2004.

The Kolkata seats were also won by the Trinamool.

The South seat is Ms Banerjee’s bastion, which she held from 1991 till 2011; this was when she was elected as the MLA from Bhabinipur and quit her MP post to become chief minister.

Prajwal Revanna Returns From Germany, Arrested In Sex Crimes Case

Prajwal Revanna Returns From Germany, Arrested In Sex Crimes Case

Prajwal Revanna is the outgoing Lok Sabha MP from Karnataka’s Hassan (File).

Bengaluru:

Karnataka lawmaker Prajwal Revanna – who went to Germany last month, shortly after sex crimes allegations by women who said he forced them into sexual acts that were then filmed – was arrested just after midnight as he arrived at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport.

The Janata Dal-Secular leader – who flew back aboard Lufthansa flight LH0764 – was taken into custody by members of a special police team tasked with investigating the charges against him.

Sources said he had twice earlier cancelled flights home.

A special court in Bengaluru on Thursday rejected an anticipatory bail request.

The police, meanwhile, have searched his Hassan home and seized “incriminating material”.

“Apologise To My Parents…”

On Monday Revanna released a video statement on X in which he said, “I apologise to my parents… I was in depression (over political rivals’ attacks on the sex assault charges). I will appear (before the police team) on May 31. I will cooperate to the best of my abilities… I have the blessings of God…”

The message came after a ‘warning’ from his grandfather and JDS patriarch HD Deve Gowda, who told him to return to India and surrender, or “face your family’s anger…”

Revanna is also the nephew of ex-Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who issued similar warnings.

And he is also the outgoing Hassan Lok Sabha MP; the 33-year-old won this seat in 2019 and was re-nominated for the 2024 election with support from the JDS’ new ally – the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The BJP has distanced itself from Revanna and the investigation. Its state unit boss, S Prakash, said, “We, as a party, have nothing to do with the videos and neither do we have any comments to make…”

The JDS, meanwhile, had to deal with internal criticism after it emerged party leader Sharangouda Kandkur had warned of potential embarrassment if these allegations were to become public.

Prajwal Revanna Sex Tapes Case Timeline

On April 27 – six days after the allegations surfaced, and a day after voting in Hassan – Revanna boarded a flight to Munich on the back of his diplomatic passport. On the same day, he posted a statement on X; he only said “truth will prevail soon” and made no mention of the charges.

A day later the ruling Congress formed a special police team based on complaints from the state’s Women’s Commission, and the first case was filed – a week after the videos surfaced and Revanna fled, triggering a political row with the Congress and the BJP blaming the other for his escape.

A police case has also been filed against his father, HD Revanna, for allegedly kidnapping a woman who said she had been raped by both men. The father, a former MLA and Public Works Department Minister, was given bail in the kidnapping case on May 14 and the sexual assault case last week.

On May 1 the Congress and the BJP escalated their sniping over Revanna.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked for Revanna’s diplomatic passport to be cancelled. He wrote to the PM again on May 22; a day after the investigating police team sent a similar request – to the Ministry of External Affairs.

A separate squabble then broke out over the passport cancellation requests.

The Congress accused the BJP of dragging its feet to shield Revanna. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hit back by saying his office had only received the request on May 21.

“We immediately acted on it… on May 23… we have to follow a certain procedure,” he told news agency ANI. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson confirmed Thursday (May 29) that a show-cause notice had been sent to the JDS leader, and that he had been given 10 days to respond.

On May 7 Interpol issued a Blue Corner notice, which requests police in member nations to collect information about an accused, his location, and/or activities in relation to a criminal inquiry.

The warrant against Prajwal Revanna – under which he has been arrested – was issued May 18.

And last week, on May 23, Deve Gowda wrote to his grandson demanding he surrender.

“At this juncture, I can do only one thing. I can issue a stern warning to Prajwal and ask him to return from wherever he is and surrender before the police.”

Four days later Revanna posted the video in which he said he would return on May 31.

Charges Against Prajwal Revanna

Three cases have been filed.

One was on April 28 in Hassan in which a 47-year-old former maid has alleged sexual assault and exploitation. HD Revanna was arrested in connection with this case as the primary accused, and rape charges were added against Prajwal Revanna after an additional statement from the woman.

NDTV Analysis | Systemic Failure In Not Forcing Revanna To Face Law

The second was registered by the cops on May 1; a 44-year-old woman – who may be a JDS worker – has accused Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times, including at least once at gunpoint.

The third was filed on May 3 and a 60-year-old woman has accused Prajwal Revanna of rape.

Prajwal Revanna has denied all charges against him and has claimed a conspiracy by his rivals.

“Final Chance To Protect Nation From…”: Manmohan Singh's 7th Phase Appeal

“Final Chance To Protect Nation From…”: Manmohan Singh's 7th Phase Appeal

Former PM Manmohan Singh also served as a Rajya Sabha MP (File).

New Delhi:

Ex-Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, 91, has made an emotional appeal to Punjab voters before voting Saturday in the final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha election – to make the most of a “final chance to ensure our democracy and Constitution are protected from repeated assaults by a despotic regime”.

In a three-page open letter the veteran Congress leader lamented the “unimaginable turmoil” in the Indian economy over the past decade – the two terms of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

Dr Singh – who was Finance Minister when Indian economy was liberalised in 1991, and was also Governor of the Reserve Bank – presented a succinct comparison of key socio-political and economic moments from the past 10 years and the two terms of his Congress-led UPA government.

Dr Singh On GDP Growth

“The imposition of the demonetisation disaster, a flawed GST (goods and service tax), and the painful mismanagement during the COVID pandemic has resulted in a miserable situation, where an expectation of subpar six to seven per cent GDP growth has become the new normal,” Dr Singh said.

“Average GDP growth under BJP government has plunged to under six per cent… during Congress-UPA tenure it was about eight per cent (New Series). Unprecedented unemployment and unbridled inflation have greatly widened inequality, which is now at a 100-year high,” the former PM said.

According to World Bank data GDP growth under the UPA government touched a high of 8.5 per cent in 2010, and hit a low of 3.1 per cent in 2008 (during the global financial crisis). In the 10 years since it has reached a high of 9.1 per cent (in 2021) and plummeted to -5.8 during the pandemic.

NDTV Explains | “Price Rise, Joblessnes…”: Congress’ Black Paper On Centre

Incidentally, Dr Singh’s letter was shared on X by the Congress an hour after the central bank released its annual report, in which it forecast real GDP growth of seven per cent for FY2024/25.

Last week a State Bank of India report pegged overall FY2023/24 growth at eight per cent.

Dr Singh said the UPA “despite challenges, had increased purchasing power of our people”, while “BJP misrule has resulted in depletion of household savings to historic 47-year low”; in FY2022/23 households’ net financial savings plunged to a five-year low of Rs 14.2 trillion 5.3 per cent of GDP.

However, between FY2011/12 and FY2021/22 (except for the pandemic years) the same figure was between seven and eight percent.

Dr Singh On Farmers’ Protest

Referring to farmers’ protests that still haunt the centre – four years after a nation-wide agitation by lakhs of agriculturists made headlines worldwide, and forced the BJP to roll back three controversial laws – he reproached the government for having “left no stone unturned in castigating Punjabis”.

“As if the lathis and rubber bullets were not enough, the Prime Minister verbally assaulted our farmers by calling them ‘parasites’ on the floor of the Parliament,” he said.

READ | Farmers Resolve To Intensify Protest, Continue During Polls

“Modiji had promised to double the income of our farmers by 2022 (but) his policies in the past 10 years have eroded the earnings… the national average monthly income of farmers is a meagre Rs 27 per day, while average debt per farmer is Rs 27,000 (from government data),” Dr Singh said.

READ | Farmers Try To Cross Punjab-Haryana Border, Tear Gas Used

The former PM then highlighted the UPA government’s loan waivers “worth Rs 72,000 crore to 3.73 crore farmers” and said it had “increased MSP (minimum support price, at the heart of renewed farmers protest against the BJP government), and increased production, while encouraging exports”.

The Congress today, he continued, had promised a legal guarantee for MSP, which has been one of the protesting farmers’ biggest demands, and a stable import-export policy for agriculture, as well as loan waivers and the “direct transfer of insured compensation in 30 days in case of crop loss”.

Dr Singh On Income Disparity, Jobs For Youth

Dr Singh also flagged wage disparity that has led to “widespread distress”.

His red-flag on this subject comes after a report by the World Inequality Lab in March, which said India’s richest people today have a larger share of national income than at any time in the past 100 years.

The former PM also flagged “course corrections” – the five ‘yuva nyay’ pillars – in his party’s election manifesto with specific reference to unemployment among the youth, and also “…30 lakh government (job) vacancies (and) innumerable paper leaks have cast a dark shadow on their future”.

“We have committed that 30 lakh vacancies would be systematically filed according to a job calendar… half of those jobs would be reserved for women, and we will establish fast-track courts for (exam) paper leak cases…” Dr Singh said in his letter.

The BJP, though, has argued that indicators like filed income tax returns (3.36 crore in 2014 to over eight crore in 2024) suggest jobs are being generated. Mr Modi has also pointed to Employee Provident Fund data – over six crore new subscribers in seven years – to make the same point.

A government report last week said unemployment rate for people over 15 (in urban areas) ‘fell’ to 6.7 per cent in the January-March period; it was 6.8 per cent a year ago.

Dr Singh On Agniveer

The former Prime Minister also mounted a sharp attack on the BJP over the contentious Agnipath military recruitment scheme, which the Congress has said it will scrap if it wins this election.

READ | “Soldiers Like Labourers”: Rahul Gandhi On Agniveer Scheme

“BJP government imposed an ill-conceived Agniveer scheme (Agniveer is the name given to those who enlist under the Agnipath programme) on our armed forces… BJP thinks value of patriotism, bravery, and service is only four years. This shows their fake nationalism,” he said.

NDTV Exclusive | “Back Off”: Rajnath Singh To Opposition On Agnipath

Defending the scheme, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told NDTV this week he is “fully confident the scheme is successful and will remain so”, and hit out at the opposition for politicising the issue.

Dr Singh’s Appeal To Punjab Voters

All of Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha seats will vote on Friday. The Congress is contesting all the seats, despite being part of the INDIA bloc with the ruling AAP, setting up a ‘friendly-fire’ election.

READ | “Give All 13 Seats To AAP”: Kejriwal To Punjab Voters

The veteran Congress leader reminded the border state and its inhabitants of their warrior spirit, and said their “indomitable courage and innate belief in the democratic ethos of inclusiveness, harmony, and brotherhood” is needed, at this point in history, to “protect our great nation”.

“Punjab and Punjabis are warriors. We are known for our spirit of sacrifice,” he said, lamenting the BJP government for having left “no stone unturned in castigating Punjab, Punjabis, and punjabiyat“.

Dr Singh On PM Modi

Finally, the former Prime Minister also took a swipe at the current leader, declaring Mr Modi had “lowered the dignity of public discourse”. “No PM, in the past, has uttered hateful, unparliamentary, and coarse terms… meant to target either a specific section of society or opposition,” he said.

READ | BJP Gets Notice In Delhi, PM’s Inheritance Tax Jibe In Madhya Pradesh

The reference has been seen to a massive row over the Prime Minister’s speech in Rajasthan, in which he referred to Muslims and the Congress’ alleged plans to “redistribute wealth to infiltrators”.

The remarks prompted a notice to Mr Modi’s BJP (and another to the Congress over comments by Rahul Gandhi) after each complained the other had violated the Model Code of Conduct.

Dr Manmohan Singh concluded his letter with a warning that India’s voters “are seeing through all of this… narrative of dehumanisation (that) has now reached its peak”, and called on them to “save our beloved nation from these forces of discord”.
