Delhi Temperature Now Just 3.8 Degrees Shy Of World Record Set In 1913

The US ranch where the world record was set is now called the Furnace Creek Ranch.

New Delhi:

If you are in Delhi-NCR and it felt like your skin was sizzling this afternoon or you thought it was the hottest it has ever been, you were not wrong. The national capital recorded its highest-ever temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius, just 4.4 degrees shy of the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth: 56.7 degrees Celsius at the Greenland Ranch in California’s Death Valley.

The ranch is now aptly called the Furnace Creek Ranch.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department, the Mungeshpur weather station in northwest Delhi recorded the temperature-bulb-shattering number at 2.30 pm.

IMD regional head Kuldeep Srivastava said the city’s outskirts are the first areas to be hit by hot winds from Rajasthan.

“Parts of Delhi are particularly susceptible to the early arrival of these hot winds, worsening the already severe weather. Areas like Mungeshpur, Narela and Najafgarh are the first to experience the full force of these hot winds,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

At 51 degrees Celsius, the previous highest temperature in India was recorded in Rajasthan’s Phalodi in 2016. This was followed by 50.8 degrees in Churu, also in the desert state, in 2019 and 50.6 degrees in Alwar in 1956.

The world’s highest temperature, according to the Guinness World Records, was recorded on July 10, 1913. There is some dispute about the number, though, and if the current record is decertified –  like the figure of 57.8 degrees Celsius recorded in Libya in 1922 – then the next highest figure will be 54 degrees, just 1.7 degrees higher than Delhi’s temperature today.

The national capital also recorded its all-time high power demand of 8,302 megawatts on Wednesday, powered by increased use of air conditioners. The use of air conditioners, however, also adds to the temperature by exacerbating the heat island effect in urban areas.

Speaking to NDTV earlier, Robert Muir-Wood, Chief Research Officer at Moody’s RMS, had said temperatures at the heart of cities can be as many as seven degrees higher than the areas surrounding them.

Listing the main causes of the heat island effect, Mr Muir-Wood had said, “There are three drivers, the first reason is that the surfaces of the buildings, the surfaces of the roads absorb a lot of heat. They tend to be dark materials. They may be glass and concrete, but they absorb a lot of heat. The second reason is that there are lower wind speeds inside a metropolitan area where you have a lot of big buildings. The bigger the buildings, the more they are slowing down the wind.”

“The third factor is that there will be a lot of air conditioning plants and other machinery, and cars in the middle of the city, and they are all producing heat too. Depending on how concentrated the population of buildings is, it can drive up the temperatures by five, six or seven degrees centigrade in the heart of the city,” the expert had said.

“Sketchy, Tainted”: Court Condemns Probe In Murder Case Against Ram Rahim

“Sketchy, Tainted”: Court Condemns Probe In Murder Case Against Ram Rahim

Gurmeet Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year-sentence for raping two of his disciples.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim, chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, was acquitted in a 22-year-old murder case today, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court citing  lapses in investigation and lack of solid evidence against the accused.

The court also listed the areas in which investigation was “tainted and sketchy” — including the weapon used for the murder, ballistic reports, postmortem report, and polygraph test which did not bear out the prosecution claims in the murder of former sect manager Ranjit Singh.

Influenced by media glare, the investigating officer(s) “carried out a tainted and sketchy investigation into the crime,” said the bench of Justices Sureshwar Thakur and Lalit Batra.

The case “is a stark portrayal of the necessity of Courts of law making an incisive and objective analyses of the evidence as exist on record,” the judges said.

Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year-sentence for raping two of his disciples and has a 16-year-old murder case against him as well.

Ranjit Singh was killed allegedly for his suspected role in the circulation of an anonymous letter, which said how women were being sexually exploited by Ram Rahim at the Dera headquarters.

Ram Rahim, who was accused of conspiracy, and four others were convicted by a CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana, in October 2021 and given life imprisonment. He is currently in jail at Haryana’s Rohtak.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s conviction in 2017 in the rape cases sparked massive violence and arson in parts of Punjab and Haryana. Thirty people died, more than 250 were injured and the Army had to be called in.

“Bomb Blast @30 Minutes” Message In Plane Toilet, Fliers Exit Using Slide

IndiGo flight bomb threat: The flight was scheduled to take off from Delhi airport around 5 am.

New Delhi:

A hoax bomb blast message forced authorities to evacuate and conduct thorough searches of the Varanasi-bound IndiGo flight at the Delhi airport on Tuesday, officials said.

The flight, 6E2211, with 176 passengers onboard, was scheduled to take off from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport around 5 am but was stopped on the runway minutes before departure after the pilot found a tissue paper with the message “bomb blast @30 minutes” written on it in the aircraft’s washroom.

“At 05:40 am, a phone call was received from the IGI airport regarding a bomb threat. A message ‘BOMB BLAST @30 MINUTES’ was written on a piece of paper inside the lavatory of the flight and was found by the pilot,” a Delhi Fire Services official said.

The aircraft was immediately taken to the isolation bay for further necessary action, the official said, adding that a quick response team was deployed, which found no suspicious items.

All passengers were deboarded through the emergency door and are safe, the official said.

The IndiGo also released an official statement and said that an alternate aircraft was arranged for passengers from Delhi to Varanasi.

“The passengers were provided with refreshments and were boarded. The flight departed for Varanasi at 11:10 am. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers,” the airline said.

Earlier this month, a tissue paper with the word ‘bomb’ written on it was also found on an Air India flight lavatory at Delhi airport, but it had turned out to be a hoax.

Police had said that they received information regarding a tissue paper found in the lavatory of an Air India flight scheduled to depart for Vadodara on May 15, with the word ‘bomb’ written on it.

“Following standard security protocols, a thorough inspection was conducted, and no suspicious items were found,” an official had said.

Several hospitals and schools in Delhi have recently been targeted with bomb threat emails, that claimed the presence of explosives on their premises. However, investigators found the threats to be false alarms.

Video: Welding Sparks May Have Caused Huge Fire At Gujarat Gaming Zone

28 people, nine of them children, were killed in the massive blaze that broke out on Saturday.

A CCTV footage of the fire at a gaming site at Gujarat’s Rajkot that is being widely circulated on social media, shows the blaze had started while welding. Twenty-eight people, nine of them children, were killed in the massive blaze that broke out on Saturday.

The footage, which could not be independently verified by NDTV, shows the fire spreading from the sparks emitted during the welding. Some of the sparks fell on a pile of plastic that lay nearby and it caught fire, which proved impossible to contain despite efforts by the panic-stricken workers.

As the fire spread, a temporary structure at the facility collapsed near the entrance, trapping a number of people. The facility had only one emergency exit. Most of the bodies recovered are charred and a DNA test has been ordered to identify them.

A police case has been filed against six partners of the game zone, which was operating without a license. The police said they have arrested two persons — the owner and the manager of the site — which did not even have a fire safety certificate.

A Special Bench of the Gujarat High Court that took suo motu cognizance of the matter today, said it was prima facie a “man-made disaster”. Pointing to reports that claimed the site was operating without proper approvals, the court also noted that a stock of highly inflammable material — petrol, fibre, and fibre glass sheets — were stored at the premises.

Sources have told NDTV that the gaming zone did not have the licences to operate, and there was no record of a fire clearance from the Rajkot Municipal Corporation.

The state police chief, meanwhile, has issued instructions that all the game zones in the state be inspected those running without fire safety permission be closed down. A Special Investigation Team has been formed to look into the case, which is expected to submit its report within 72 hours.

No Fire License, One Exit: Major Safety Violations At Rajkot Game Zone

No Fire License, One Exit: Major Safety Violations At Rajkot Game Zone

Rajkot:

The massive fire at a gaming zone in Rajkot which resulted in the death of 28 people, including 9 children, has raised serious questions about the safety standards at the facility. Officials said that the amusement centre was operating without a no-objection certificate (NOC) for fire clearance and also had just one exit.

The gaming zone, called TRP, was packed with visitors due to a weekend discount offer with tickets priced at just Rs 99. It is suspected that the fire might have started due to a short circuit, but officials said that the exact cause will be known only after a probe.

“The reason for the fire has yet to be ascertained. The attempts to douse the fire are underway. We are facing difficulty in the firefighting operation because the temporary structure has collapsed and also due to the wind velocity,” a fire department official said.

The intensity of the fire was such that smoke was visible from several kilometers away. The bodies were charred beyond recognition, officials said. The DNA samples of the bodies and the victim’s relatives have been collected for identification.

According to sources, the gaming zone did not possess the necessary licences to operate, and there was no record of a no-objection certificate (NOC) for fire clearance from the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. This lack of regulatory compliance has come under sharp scrutiny following the disaster.

Rajkot Mayor Nayna Pedhadiya, who arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue operations, confirmed the absence of a fire NOC.

“We will investigate how such a big game zone was functioning without a fire NOC and we are witnessing the consequences of it. No politics will be allowed over this issue,” Ms Pedhadiya asserted.

The facility also had just one emergency exit and there was panic after the fire broke out.

“People got trapped as a temporary structure at the facility collapsed near the entrance, making it difficult for the people to come out,” Rajkot fire officer Ilesh Kher told reporters.

The owner and manager of the TRP game zone have been detained for questioning.

In the wake of the fire tragedy, the state director general of police has issued instructions to the commissioners of police and superintendents of police to inspect all the game zones in Gujarat and close those running without fire safety permission.

The DGP has directed the police to carry out this procedure in coordination with fire officers of the municipalities and municipalities.
