6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Taiwan

Taiwan hit with magnitude-6.0 quake after day of tremors late on Monday night. (Representational)

Taipei:

-More than 80 earthquakes, the strongest of 6.3 magnitude, struck Taiwan’s east coast starting Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday and some caused shaking of buildings in the capital Taipei, the island’s weather administration said.

The quakes were centred on the largely rural eastern county of Hualien, where on April 3 at least 14 people died after a 7.2 magnitude temblor. Taiwan has been jolted by hundreds of aftershocks since then.

The fire department in Hualien said early on Tuesday that a hotel which had already been damaged on April 3 and was no longer in operation was now slightly leaning on its side.

However, there were no reports of any casualties.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3 magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.

On Earth Day, Google Doodle Spotlights Climate Change

On Earth Day, Google Doodle Spotlights Climate Change

Each letter showcased a real-world conservation effort.

Celebrating Earth Day, Google used breathtaking aerial views to showcase Earth’s natural wonders and rich biodiversity. This served as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding these treasures for those who come after us.

As per the official website of Google Doodle, the letters of the search engine showcased some places across the globe where “people, communities, and governments work every day to help protect the planet’s natural beauty, biodiversity and resources. These examples promise hope and optimism, but also remind us that there’s much more to do to address the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.”

The six letters remind people to “practice sustainable habits year-round, and to continue the work needed to conserve water, electricity, and other resources,” the website stated.

The Google Doodle wasn’t just a pretty picture! Each letter showcased a real-world conservation effort. The “G” highlighted the Turks and Caicos Islands, known for their biodiversity and ongoing efforts to protect natural resources and endangered species.  Moving on, the “O” featured Scorpion Reef National Park in Mexico, the largest reef in the southern Gulf of Mexico.  This UNESCO biosphere reserve safeguards complex coral reefs and shelters endangered birds and turtles.

According to the website, the letter ‘L’ features the Great Green Wall in Nigeria, an “African Union-led initiative is restoring land affected by desertification across the width of Africa, planting trees and other vegetation while implementing sustainable land management practices.”

The last letter E shows the Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves in Australia, which, according to the website, is “one of 20 nature reserves in Australia that help protect fragile ecosystems, increasingly rare natural habitats, and several threatened or endangered species.”

This year, the theme of the Earth Day 2024  is “Planet vs. Plastics” which calls to “advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion,” according to the official website of Earth Day.

KKR vs RCB Live Score: Here’s what Shreyas Iyer said at the toss

“Last afternoon game here, we know how the wicket plays, we would have loved to bowl as well. It’s stiflingly hot and we’ll look to make them as tired as possible. We’ve tried to keep things simple, it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you end, just stick to the basics. We are playing the same team. It’s important to assess the conditions, execute our plans, then it’ll go in our favour.”

  • 15:13 (IST)

KKR vs RCB Live Score: Here’s what Faf du Plessis said at the toss

“We will chase. This is probably a chasing ground, always has been. I’m a fan of batting first when it’s really hot, but the temperature did drop after an hour or so yesterday, unlike in Mumbai or Chennai where it stays very hot. The batting is so strong that a general score or 60-70 isn’t considered great during the batting PP. We have three changes – Green and Siraj come back, so does Karn Sharma. We know if we do a few things back, the momentum can be back and we do have the firepower.”

  • 15:01 (IST)

    KKR vs RCB Live: Toss

KKR vs RCB Live Score: The dangerous Sunil Narine

The biggest threat for RCB will be Sunil Narine, not just with the ball but also with the bat at the top of the order. Narine, who scored his maiden T20 century in their last match against RR, is KKR’s leading run-getter this season with 276 runs at an incredible strike rate of over 187.

  • 14:42 (IST)

KKR vs RCB Live Score: Pitch Report

“This is an afternoon game and that changes the dynamics completely. One short boundary at 61m, the other side is at 66m, the straight boundary is 73m long. It’s very hot at 43 degrees and the pitch will suffer because of that, it’s very dry. Most of the pitch looks even and flat, but there’s one big chunk where it’s extremely dry, the grass has been removed. It’s around the spinner’s length and they could exploit the patches. Otherwise, this pitch has plenty of runs on offer. With this heat, the captain winning the toss should opt to bat first,” reckons Graeme Swann and Sanjay Manjrekar, in their pitch report.

  • 14:41 (IST)

KKR vs RCB Live: KKR’s strong batting

Kolkata Knight Riders are having a great IPL 2024 campaign as they have won four games out of games. They have also defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru, earlier in this season. • 14:28 (IST)

KKR vs RCB Live: Virat Kohli eyes huge feat

Amid all the losses, one thing which Royal Challengers Bengaluru are definitely cherishing is the form of their star batter Virat Kohli. He is currently highest run-scorer with a total of 361 runs in 7 matches. In today’s game against Kolkata Knight Riders, he will aim to complete his 1000 runs against them. He is just 56 runs away from the feat.

  • 14:19 (IST)

KKR vs RCB Live: RCB eye redemption

“BJP May Get 350 Seats On Its Own, 5 In Tamil Nadu”: Top Economist To NDTV

“BJP May Get 350 Seats On Its Own, 5 In Tamil Nadu”: Top Economist To NDTV

Economist Surjit Bhalla also dismissed data by the think tank CMIE as unreliable

New Delhi:

The BJP is likely to perform better this time than what it achieved in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, a top economist and psephologist told NDTV today.

Surjit Bhalla, whose new book ‘How We Vote’ details the voter’s mindset, in an interview to NDTV said the BJP may get 330 to 350 seats.

“Based on statistical possibility, they should get 330 to 350 seats on their own. This is just the BJP, not including its alliance partners,” Mr Bhalla said, agreeing that the party whose campaign is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would likely see a 5 to 7 per cent rise in seats won compared to the 2019 results.

“It can be a wave election. Every election has a potential (to be a wave). But it may not also be a wave election,” said the economist who has tracked elections in India for four decades.

For the Opposition Congress, Mr Bhalla said the party may get 44 seats, or 2 per cent less than what it won in the 2014 election, the year PM Modi became Prime Minister.

“The problem with the (Opposition) alliance is the leadership. The economy matters the most, the leadership matters second. And both of them are in favour of the BJP. If the Opposition had selected a leader who could have a mass appeal or approximating half the appeal that Prime Minister Modi has, then I think it could be a contest,” Mr Bhalla told NDTV.

He predicted the BJP would likely win at least five seats in Tamil Nadu, where the BJP has been traditionally a weak party. “I won’t be surprised if, of all the places, the BJP in Tamil Nadu gain over five seats. In Kerala, maybe one or two,” Mr Bhalla said.

He attributed this possibility to the improvement in people’s living conditions. “India votes on the basis of how much improvement has been in people’s lives. That’s the basic premise. It’s not caste, not gender, not the various factors that people attribute to, but it is precisely what Bill Clinton had said in 1992, ‘It’s the economy, stupid’,” Mr Bhalla said.

“What we say is that because of the significant improvement in their lives, 1 per cent or 14 million are poor by the old definition of poverty. Look, we have developed, per capita consumption has improved, lives have improved, so raise the poverty line. In some sense, maybe a quarter of the population is poor. Poverty is relative now, no longer absolute,” the economist told NDTV.

“The poor will always be with us. The rich will always be with us. It depends on how you define who are the poor, and we use the World Bank definition of $1.9 per person per day. We are saying it should be doubled because of the improvement in lives and economy,” Mr Bhalla said.

He dismissed data by the think tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) as unreliable, and faulted the Opposition of selectively using the CMIE data to target the BJP during election season.

“Everywhere in the world, the Opposition will always say inflation is high, there are too few jobs. But there are less percentage of people unemployed than in 2019 in India, for example,” Mr Bhalla said.

“Am not the only one to question the (CMIE) data. Several authors have. THey are saying less women in India are in the workforce today than in Yemen and Iraq, less than 10 per cent? This is the point I want to make. It is so absurd. Why has it got currency? Because the Opposition loves it. The CMIE data I think is one of the most untrustworthy data published anywhere at any time in the world,” Mr Bhalla said.

The second phase of the Lok Sabha elections will be held on April 26. The rest will be held in May. Votes will be counted on June 4.

Will Respond At “Maximum Level” If Israel…: Iran Warns Amid Tensions

Will Respond At “Maximum Level” If Israel…: Iran Warns Amid Tensions

Iranian Foreign Minister comments follow reports of an Israeli strike on Iran early Friday.

Tehran:

Iran’s foreign minister on Friday said Tehran was investigating an overnight attack on Iran, adding that so far a link to Israel had not been proven as he downplayed the strike.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told NBC News the drones took off from inside Iran and flew for a few hundred meters before being downed.

“They’re … more like toys that our children play with, not drones,” Amirabdollahian said.

“It has not been proved to us that there is a connection between these and Israel,” he said, adding that Iran was investigating the matter but that media reports were not accurate, according to Tehran’s information.

Iranian media and officials described a small number of explosions, which they said resulted from air defenses hitting three drones over Isfahan in central Iran in the early hours of Friday. They referred to the incident as an attack by “infiltrators”, rather than by Israel, obviating the need for retaliation.

Amirabdollahian warned that if Israel retaliated and acted against the interests of Iran, Tehran’s next response would be immediate and at maximum level.

“If Israel wants to do another adventurism and acts against the interests of Iran, our next response will be immediate and will be at the maximum level,” Amirabdollahian said.

The attack appeared to target an Iranian Air Force base near the city of Isfahan, deep inside the country, but without striking any strategic sites or causing major damage.

Israel has said nothing about the incident. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States had not been involved in any offensive operations, while the White House said it had no comment.

CALIBRATED RETALIATION

Israel had said it would retaliate after a strike on April 13, the first ever direct attack on Israel by Iran, which caused no deaths after Israel and its allies shot down hundreds of missiles and drones.

Tehran launched those attacks in response to a presumed Israeli airstrike on April 1 that destroyed a building in Iran’s embassy compound in Damascus and killed several Iranian officers including a top general.

Allies including the U.S. had pressed all week to ensure any further retaliation would be calibrated not to provoke more escalation, and Western countries tightened sanctions on Iran to mollify Israel.

There was no word from Israel on Friday as to whether further action might be planned. Apart from direct strikes on Iranian territory, it has other ways of attacking, including cyber attacks and strikes on Iranian proxies elsewhere.

Violence between Israel and Iranian proxies across the Middle East has intensified throughout six months of bloodshed in Gaza, raising fears the longstanding foes’ shadow war could spiral into a direct conflict.

Israel’s assault on Gaza began after Hamas Islamists attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200, according to Israeli tallies. Israel’s military offensive has killed 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Gazan health ministry.

As night fell on Friday, Israeli planes and tanks pounded several areas across the Gaza Strip, with air strikes hitting areas of Rafah where over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are sheltering, according to residents, Hamas media and officials at the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.

One strike hit two apartments in a residential building in the city, killing nine people, including four children, and wounding several others, health officials said.

Air strikes also destroyed at least five houses in the Al-Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, residents and Hamas media said.

“They (Israeli security) phoned some residents and ordered them to evacuate their houses before planes bombed some buildings nearby,” Abu Omar, a resident of Al-Nuseirat, told Reuters via a chat app.

“Soon as we ran away explosions shook the ground,” he added.

Israel’s government did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

“Misusing Mandate Is Congress Legacy”: Amit Shah Exclusive

“Misusing Mandate Is Congress Legacy”: Amit Shah Exclusive

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to NDTV in an exclusive interview

Gandhinagar:

As the Great Indian Election began with 102 seats in 21 states and Union Territories polling in the first phase, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP will never change the caste-based reservation policy and won’t let anyone else touch it either. He also said the Congress, and not the BJP, has a legacy to misuse its numerical strength.

Mr Shah today filed his nomination from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar seat, which votes on May 7.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Mr Shah said the BJP is hoping for its best-ever performance in southern India in this election. “Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Andhra (Pradesh) and Karnataka, we will perform strongly in all these states. This is the first time when (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi’s popularity in the South has reached a point where it will convert into election results,” he said.

Mr Shah said the BJP had improved its vote-share in the South in both the 2014 and the 2019 general elections, as compared to the earlier years. “But we had not reached the level of winning seats. But this time, we are confident that many of our colleagues will be elected there this time,” he said.

Responding to a question on the Opposition’s allegation that the BJP plans to change the Constitution if it returns to power with a strong majority, he replied, “They are linking this with reservation and saying this in a roundabout way. I will answer this directly. In 2014, we (NDA) had the majority required to change the Constitution, in 2019, BJP had absolute majority. But we never tweaked reservation (policy). And I am making it clear, we will never tamper with reservation and won’t let anyone do it either. This is our commitment to the people. Modiji has worked the most for the betterment of Dalits, tribals and backward classes.”

The Home Minister said the BJP has used its majority to water down Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, abolish triple talaq and bring the Citizenship Amendment Act. “We have not used it to stop reservation. It is the Congress that has a legacy of misusing majority. Indira Gandhi used the majority to impose Emergency, to choke democracy. We used our majority to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures. The people know they (Opposition) have no issues, so they are trying to evoke sentiments, but I don’t think people will be misled,” he said.

On the Opposition’s charge at BJP over Electronic Voting Machines and the electoral bond system, he said, “Their parties have also received donations through bonds. Is that extortion as well? Rahul Gandhi must tell the people, yes, we have also extorted. And the donation they have received in proportion to the number of MPs is more than what we got. They don’t have an issue, there is no allegation of corruption against us. So they are trying to create confusion. They won’t be successful. I have travelled across the country. Everywhere, people are ready to vote in support of Prime Minister Modi.”

On the government’s war against left-wing extremism, he said, “There is no change in the BJP’s commitment. Terrorism and Naxalism are not democratic ways and should be eradicated. We welcome those who lay down arms. Security forces will respond to those who don’t.”
