Will Respond At “Maximum Level” If Israel…: Iran Warns Amid Tensions

Iranian Foreign Minister comments follow reports of an Israeli strike on Iran early Friday.

Tehran:

Iran’s foreign minister on Friday said Tehran was investigating an overnight attack on Iran, adding that so far a link to Israel had not been proven as he downplayed the strike.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told NBC News the drones took off from inside Iran and flew for a few hundred meters before being downed.

“They’re … more like toys that our children play with, not drones,” Amirabdollahian said.

“It has not been proved to us that there is a connection between these and Israel,” he said, adding that Iran was investigating the matter but that media reports were not accurate, according to Tehran’s information.

Iranian media and officials described a small number of explosions, which they said resulted from air defenses hitting three drones over Isfahan in central Iran in the early hours of Friday. They referred to the incident as an attack by “infiltrators”, rather than by Israel, obviating the need for retaliation.

Amirabdollahian warned that if Israel retaliated and acted against the interests of Iran, Tehran’s next response would be immediate and at maximum level.

“If Israel wants to do another adventurism and acts against the interests of Iran, our next response will be immediate and will be at the maximum level,” Amirabdollahian said.

The attack appeared to target an Iranian Air Force base near the city of Isfahan, deep inside the country, but without striking any strategic sites or causing major damage.

Israel has said nothing about the incident. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States had not been involved in any offensive operations, while the White House said it had no comment.

CALIBRATED RETALIATION

Israel had said it would retaliate after a strike on April 13, the first ever direct attack on Israel by Iran, which caused no deaths after Israel and its allies shot down hundreds of missiles and drones.

Tehran launched those attacks in response to a presumed Israeli airstrike on April 1 that destroyed a building in Iran’s embassy compound in Damascus and killed several Iranian officers including a top general.

Allies including the U.S. had pressed all week to ensure any further retaliation would be calibrated not to provoke more escalation, and Western countries tightened sanctions on Iran to mollify Israel.

There was no word from Israel on Friday as to whether further action might be planned. Apart from direct strikes on Iranian territory, it has other ways of attacking, including cyber attacks and strikes on Iranian proxies elsewhere.

Violence between Israel and Iranian proxies across the Middle East has intensified throughout six months of bloodshed in Gaza, raising fears the longstanding foes’ shadow war could spiral into a direct conflict.

Israel’s assault on Gaza began after Hamas Islamists attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200, according to Israeli tallies. Israel’s military offensive has killed 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Gazan health ministry.

As night fell on Friday, Israeli planes and tanks pounded several areas across the Gaza Strip, with air strikes hitting areas of Rafah where over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are sheltering, according to residents, Hamas media and officials at the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.

One strike hit two apartments in a residential building in the city, killing nine people, including four children, and wounding several others, health officials said.

Air strikes also destroyed at least five houses in the Al-Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, residents and Hamas media said.

“They (Israeli security) phoned some residents and ordered them to evacuate their houses before planes bombed some buildings nearby,” Abu Omar, a resident of Al-Nuseirat, told Reuters via a chat app.

“Soon as we ran away explosions shook the ground,” he added.

Israel’s government did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

“Misusing Mandate Is Congress Legacy”: Amit Shah Exclusive

“Misusing Mandate Is Congress Legacy”: Amit Shah Exclusive

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to NDTV in an exclusive interview

Gandhinagar:

As the Great Indian Election began with 102 seats in 21 states and Union Territories polling in the first phase, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP will never change the caste-based reservation policy and won’t let anyone else touch it either. He also said the Congress, and not the BJP, has a legacy to misuse its numerical strength.

Mr Shah today filed his nomination from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar seat, which votes on May 7.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Mr Shah said the BJP is hoping for its best-ever performance in southern India in this election. “Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Andhra (Pradesh) and Karnataka, we will perform strongly in all these states. This is the first time when (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi’s popularity in the South has reached a point where it will convert into election results,” he said.

Mr Shah said the BJP had improved its vote-share in the South in both the 2014 and the 2019 general elections, as compared to the earlier years. “But we had not reached the level of winning seats. But this time, we are confident that many of our colleagues will be elected there this time,” he said.

Responding to a question on the Opposition’s allegation that the BJP plans to change the Constitution if it returns to power with a strong majority, he replied, “They are linking this with reservation and saying this in a roundabout way. I will answer this directly. In 2014, we (NDA) had the majority required to change the Constitution, in 2019, BJP had absolute majority. But we never tweaked reservation (policy). And I am making it clear, we will never tamper with reservation and won’t let anyone do it either. This is our commitment to the people. Modiji has worked the most for the betterment of Dalits, tribals and backward classes.”

The Home Minister said the BJP has used its majority to water down Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, abolish triple talaq and bring the Citizenship Amendment Act. “We have not used it to stop reservation. It is the Congress that has a legacy of misusing majority. Indira Gandhi used the majority to impose Emergency, to choke democracy. We used our majority to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures. The people know they (Opposition) have no issues, so they are trying to evoke sentiments, but I don’t think people will be misled,” he said.

On the Opposition’s charge at BJP over Electronic Voting Machines and the electoral bond system, he said, “Their parties have also received donations through bonds. Is that extortion as well? Rahul Gandhi must tell the people, yes, we have also extorted. And the donation they have received in proportion to the number of MPs is more than what we got. They don’t have an issue, there is no allegation of corruption against us. So they are trying to create confusion. They won’t be successful. I have travelled across the country. Everywhere, people are ready to vote in support of Prime Minister Modi.”

On the government’s war against left-wing extremism, he said, “There is no change in the BJP’s commitment. Terrorism and Naxalism are not democratic ways and should be eradicated. We welcome those who lay down arms. Security forces will respond to those who don’t.”

“If Anything Happens To My Wife…”: Ex Pak PM Imran Khan Warns Army Chief

“If Anything Happens To My Wife…”: Ex Pak PM Imran Khan Warns Army Chief

“I will not leave Asim Munir as long as I am alive,” Imran Khan said (File)

Islamabad:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday alleged that Army chief General Asim Munir was directly responsible for the imprisonment of his wife Bushra Bibi.

Bushra Bibi, 49, was convicted in a corruption case as well as in the case of illegal marriage with Mr Khan, 71, and is currently held in detention at their Bani Gala residence in the suburbs of Islamabad.

The PTI leader in a conversation with journalists at Adiala Jail where he is currently incarcerated hurled allegations on the army chief, according to a long post uploaded on Mr Khan’s official X account.

“General Asim Munir is directly involved in the sentence awarded to my wife,” Mr Khan said, adding that the judge who convicted her said that he was forced to make the decision.

“If anything happens to my wife, I will not leave Asim Munir, I will not leave Asim Munir as long as I am alive. I will expose his unconstitutional and illegal steps,” he threatened.

Mr Khan said there was a law of the jungle in the country and all was being done by the “king of the jungle”. “If the king of the jungle wants, all the cases of Nawaz Sharif are forgiven, and when he wants, we are punished in three cases in five days,” he alleged.

Mr Khan also said that the economy would stabilise not through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans but by investment. “Due to the law of the jungle, there will be no investment in the country. It is good that Saudi Arabia is coming but investment will come once there is rule of law in the country,” he said.

He also referred to the recent reported clash between police and army in Bahawalnagar area of Punjab and said that the “police were thrashed” by violating the law, but the IG (inspector general police) and Viceroy, who oppressed our people, apologised from those who had thrashed the police.

Mr Khan said the Viceroy said after the incident that “they (police) are our brothers”. He went on to say that “such treatment is done to slaves and not to brothers” because those having power thrashed the police and also forced to apologise.

He also said that PTI was being stopped from contesting in the by-elections. “At this time, standing in front of oppression is Jihad. Our workers have to protect each vote, guard the vote,” the former premier said.

So far the army has not responded to the serious allegations.

The Science Behind 'Surya Tilak' Ceremony At Ayodhya's Ram Temple

The Science Behind 'Surya Tilak' Ceremony At Ayodhya's Ram Temple

A team of ten esteemed Indian scientists is stationed at the Ram Mandir.

Ayodhya:

At noon, today, the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya witnessed a unique event as the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol will be anointed with a ray of sunlight, known as ‘Surya Tilak’ on the occasion of Ram Navami.

Using cutting-edge scientific expertise, a 5.8 centimetre beam of light illuminated the deity’s forehead. To achieve this remarkable phenomenon, a specialised instrument has been designed. A team of ten esteemed Indian scientists is stationed at the Ram Mandir to ensure the success of this auspicious event on Ram Navami. For approximately 3 to 3.5 minutes starting at 12 noon, sunlight will be precisely directed onto the statue’s forehead using a combination of mirrors and lenses. The team has worked tirelessly to finalise the mechanism before this highly anticipated day.

Commissioned by the temple trust, scientists from a leading government institution have devised a sophisticated apparatus consisting of mirrors and lenses. This mechanism, officially termed the ‘Surya Tilak mechanism’, marks a significant scientific and engineering feat.

Dr Pradeep Kumar Ramacharla, Scientist and Director at the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, explained to NDTV the intricate workings of the optomechanical system.

“The opto-mechanical system consists of four mirrors and four lenses fitted inside the tilt mechanism and piping systems. The complete cover with an aperture for the tilt mechanism is placed at the top floor to divert the sun rays through mirrors and lenses to the Garbha Girha,” Dr Ramacharla said.

“The final lens and mirror focus the sun rays on the forehead of Shree Ram facing east. The tilt mechanism is used to adjust the first mirror’s tilt, sending the sun rays towards the north direction to the 2nd mirror to make the Surya Tilak on every year’s Shree Ram Navami. All the piping and other parts are manufactured using brass material. The mirrors and lenses are of very high quality and durable to sustain a long period. The inner surfaces of pipes, elbows, and enclosures are black powder-coated to avoid scattering of sunlight. Also, at the top aperture, an infrared filter glass is used to restrict the Sun’s heat waves from falling on the idol’s forehead,” he added.

The development of the ‘Surya Tilak’ mechanism involved collaboration between scientists from CBRI, Roorkee, and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP), Bengaluru. Employing a special gearbox and using reflective mirrors and lenses, the team orchestrated the precise alignment of sunlight rays from the temple’s third floor to the inner sanctum (Garbha Griha) using established principles of solar tracking. Technical support from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and the manufacturing expertise of Optica, a Bengaluru-based company, further helped the project’s execution.

Dr Pradeep Chauhan, Scientist at the Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, said with confidence that the ‘Surya Tilak’ would flawlessly anoint the statue of Ram Lalla. Given the fixed date of Ram Navami based on the lunar calendar, intricate arrangements involving 19 gears were implemented to ensure the timely occurrence of this auspicious ritual, all without relying on electricity, batteries, or iron-based components.

India’s premier institution in the field of astronomy, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru, has devised a solution to reconcile the apparent disparity between the lunar and solar (Gregorian) calendars. “We possess the requisite expertise in positional astronomy,” elaborated Dr Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of IIA, adding, “This expertise was applied to ensure that the Sun’s rays, symbolised by a ‘Surya Tilak’, could ceremoniously anoint the idol of Ram Lala on every Ram Navmi.”

The team from CSIR-CBRI includes Dr SK Panigrahi, Dr RS Bisht, Mr Kanti Solanki, Mr V. Chakradhar, Mr Dinesh, and Mr Sameer. Prof. R. Pradeep Kumar, Director of CSIR-CBRI, mentored the project. From IIA Bangalore, Dr Annapurni S., Director of IIA, Er S Sriram, and Professor Tushar Prabhu are the consultants. Mr Rajinder Kotaria, Managing Director of Optica, and his team, Mr Nagraj, Mr Vivek, and Mr Thava Kumar, are actively involved in the execution and installation process.

A similar ‘Surya Tilak’ mechanism already exists in some Jain temples and at the Sun Temple at Konark, but they are engineered differently.

“Created Chimera Of Free Water”: Lt Governor's Open Letter To Arvind Kejriwal

“Created Chimera Of Free Water”: Lt Governor's Open Letter To Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi:

Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena has written an open letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in jail in connection with the liquor policy case, after a note by AAP minister Atishi to him seeking suspension of the CEO of Delhi Jal Board over a murder triggered by a water dispute in the national capital. “It has become habitual on the part of your ministers to blame officers for their own fault,” he wrote, stressing he had to write the open letter as “direct communication with you in present circumstances is not possible”.

He also accused the AAP government of deceiving the people by “creating a chimera of free water”. “Instead of fixing the iniquitous water supply, you and your ministers created a chimera of free water. Deception of people has been mastered into an art form by you and your minister,” he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party swiftly responded to the letter and accused the Lt Governor of encouraging officers to obstruct the work of the Delhi Jal board. “The Lt Governor is responsible for stopping DJB’s work. He encourages officers to do so. No action was taken against the officers despite repeated requests,” said Atishi.

A woman was killed following a quarrel with her neighbour over taking water from a common tap in Farsh Bazar area in north-east Delhi.

“In light of this shocking incident of the death of a woman in Farsh Bazar following violence due to water shortage, Hon’ble LG is requested to immediately suspend the CEO of Delhi Jal Board within 24 hours as this criminal negligence has taken place under his watch,” Atishi, who holds the water portfolio, alleged in the note.

Hitting back, Mr Saxena said Atishi indicted her own government by “underlining the inadequate supply of water as the cause of the incident”. “Atishi has ironically indicted her own government of more than nine years. Her note indeed is a prima facie admission of guilt, inaction and inefficiency over,” he added.

Detailing the crisis in numbers, Mr Saxena claimed of about 2.5 crore people in the city, “more than 2 crore (over 80%) people are deprived of drinking water supply in varying degrees”.

“It simply points to the fact that there has been no effort whatsoever during the last ten years for plugging the leaks and we seem to be spending thousands of crores in pumping water into a leaking bucket,” the Lt Governor claimed.

Atishi, in her note, alleged “inaction” by officers of the Delhi Jal Board and claimed that “there has been a concerted conspiracy to stop the funds of Delhi Jal Board in the FY 2023-24”.

Rebutting her claim, Mr Saxena said, “Since 2015, Rs 28,400 crore has been spent as Capital Expenditure by DJB. However, according to the Economic Survey 2023-24, over the last decade, water treatment capacity has grown marginally from 906 MGD to 946 MGD, a barely 4.4 percent increase.”

Mr Saxena, who is often at odds with the AAP government, took a dig at the Chief Minister’s promise to “transform Delhi into Singapore”. “It would be educative to know that in Singapore “unaccounted for water” is just five per cent, compared to Delhi’s 58 per cent. Even other Indian cities fare much better than Delhi – Chennai (35 per cent), Mumbai (27 per cent), Pune (35 per cent).

Unaccounted for water is a sum of water leakages by way of transmission and distribution losses, water theft and non-payment of dues.

He also alleged there was a stark difference between the water supply to affluent societies and to slums and unauthorised colonies. “The rich in the city staying in affluent colonies have round-the-clock water supply and get as high as 500 litres per person per day- which translates to nearly 35 buckets of water per person per day while in unauthorised colonies and slums, water availability is less than 50 litre per person per day,” he said. “Many of these settlements receive water supply for barely half an hour a day. In some cases, water is supplied on alternate days,” Mr Saxena added.

VK Saxena also alleged that seven per cent of households – an average of 20 lakh people, still do not receive piped water supply.
