Boxing Great Mary Kom Announces Retirement, Cites “Age Limit” | Boxing News

Six-time World Champion and 2012 Olympic medallist Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom on Wednesday announced her retirement from boxing. Mary Kom hung her boxing gloves as the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) rules allow male and female boxers to fight in elite-level competition only till the age of 40. During an event, Mary, 41, admitted that she still has the hunger to compete at the elite level, but she has to bring curtains down on her career because of the age limit.

“I have the hunger still but unfortunately because of the age limit it is over I cannot compete in any competition. I want to play more but I am being forced to quit (due to the age limit). I have to retire. I have achieved everything in my life,” Mary said during an event.

Mary is the first female boxer in boxing history to have captured six world titles. The five-time Asian champion was the first female boxer from India to take home a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games.

The experienced pugilist won a bronze medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games leaving any record or title untouched from her reach. She introduced herself to the world at the age of 18 in the inaugural world meet in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

With her near-flawless boxing style, she impressed everyone and made it to the final of the 48kg category. She fell short in the final but left a mark of the success that she was going to achieve in the future.

In the coming years, she went on to become the first Indian to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. She went on to clinch the World Championships titles in 2005, 2006, 2008 and the 2010 editions. After winning the 2008 title, Mary went on a break after giving birth to her twins.

After winning the 2012 Olympic medal, Mary once again went on a break after giving birth to her third child. She marked her return but sealed her place at the summit in the 2018 World Championships which was held in Delhi.

She dominated with a 5-0 win over Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota for her sixth world title. A year later, she went on to clinch her eighth world medal, the most by any male or female boxer.

Rohan Bopanna Secures Historic World No. 1 Spot, Progresses To Australian Open Men's Doubles Semis | Tennis News

Rohan Bopanna Secures Historic World No. 1 Spot, Progresses To Australian Open Men's Doubles Semis | Tennis News

India star Rohan Bopanna made Gran Slam history as he progressed to the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2024 men’s doubles event. Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden reached the semi-finals with a straight-sets win against the Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni on Wednesday. Courtesy of the quarter-final win in the Australian Open, Bopanna will become the No. 1 men’s doubles player in the world, at the age of 43. When the rankings are updated, he will become the oldest player in the sport’s history to clinch the numero uno spot.

The feat comes less than a year after Bopanna became the oldest man to qualify for a grand slam final in the Open era, when he and his partner Ebden lost the US Open 2023 final. Bopanna had made his debut more than 20 years ago.

Bopanna entered the Australian Open with a career-high ranking of No. 3. Having progressed to the semi-finals of the year’s first Gran Slam, the veteran Indian is assured of becoming the new No. 1 when the rankings will be updated next week. His men’s doubles partner Mathew Ebden, is assured of the No. 2 spot spot in men’s doubles rankings.

It was for the first time in 17 attempts that Bopanna managed to enter the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Earlier, Bopanna and Ebden sealed a spot in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a victory over Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic in a tight two-set match 7-6 (8), 7-6 (4) in Melbourne Park.

Koolhof-Mektic took the early initiative and claimed the lead, breaking the 43-year-old Bopanna’s serve as early as the second game of the opening set. To offset the lead, the Indo-Australian duo counterattacked in the seventh game, breaking Mektic.

Bopanna-Ebden’s expertise helped them win 10-8 in the tiebreaker after the set eventually went to it.

The second group followed a similar pattern as well. In the sixth game, Koolhof-Mektic secured the first break point by breaking Bopanna once more. The score was tied at 6-6 when Bopanna and Ebden broke Mektic in the eighth inning.

In an hour and forty-three minutes, Bopanna-Ebden emerged victorious in a tie-break set and secured their place in the quarterfinal.

Ram Lalla Idol That Lost Out. Rajasthan Sculptor's White Marble Version

Ram Lalla Idol That Lost Out. Rajasthan Sculptor's White Marble Version

The white idol of Ram Lalla is currently with the temple trust

Ayodhya:

While the black stone idol of Ram Lalla carved by Mysuru sculptor Arun Yogiraj has made it to the sanctum sanctorum of the grand temple at Ayodhya, two other idols under consideration will now be placed in other parts of the temple. One of them is a white marble idol carved by Rajasthan’s Satyanarayan Pandey. NDTV has accessed a photograph of this idol, which could not make it to the temple’s ‘garbha griha’ but will be placed elsewhere in the Ram Temple.

The white marble idol is currently with the trust. It shows Ram Lalla holding a golden bow and arrow. Behind the deity is an arch-like structure that contains smaller sculptures depicting various incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The idol shows remarkable craftsmanship as jewellery and clothes adorning the deity are chiselled out of marble. The dimensions of the idol are in line with those laid down by the trust overseeing the construction of the temple.

The 51-inch black granite idol that now adorns the temple’s sanctum sanctorum has been carved out of a rock 2.5 billion years old, National Institute of Rock Mechanics HS Venkatesh has told NDTV.

“The rock is highly durable and resistant to climatic variation and will sustain thousands of years in this subtropical zone with minimum maintenance,” he has said.

The rock used for the idol was brought all the way from Karnataka and was reportedly excavated from Gujjegowdanapura in Mysuru. According to news agency PTI, a local contractor drew the temple trust’s attention to the rock’s quality after it was found during a levelling exercise on agricultural land.

In Ayodhya yesterday for the ‘pran pratistha’ ceremony, sculptor Yogiraj said it was the best day of his life. “I have always felt that Lord Ram has been shielding me and my family from all the bad times, and I strongly believe that it was Him who chose me for the auspicious task. I spent sleepless nights working on the idol with precision, but it was all worth it. I feel I am the luckiest person on Earth and today is the best day of my life,” he told PTI.

Besides Mr Yogiraj and Mr Pandey, Ganesh Bhatt from Karnataka had also carved a sculpture that was considered for the sanctum sanctorum. That too will now be placed somewhere in the temple.

Large parts of the temple are yet to be constructed, including the first floor that will house the idol of Raja Ram, with those of Sita, Laxman and Hanuman.

Later, he was taken to a hospital but was declared dead by the doctors.

A man dressed as Hanuman died after suffering a heart attack in the middle of a performance in a Ramlila today. The Ramlila was organised in Haryana’s Bhiwani to mark the grand inauguration of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

In a video of the shocking incident, Harish Mehta can be seen dancing dressed as Lord Hanuman at a local event. The act was supposed to end with him touching Lord Ram’s feet. As Harish Mehta suffered a heart attack in the middle of the performance, he fell on the floor. People confused it as a part of the act and didn’t come to his rescue. It was after he did not get up and was unresponsive for over a minute that people realised it was a medical emergency.

Later, he was taken to a hospital but was declared dead by the doctors.

Harish Mehta had retired as a junior engineer in the electricity department. He was also an artist and had been performing as Lord Hanuman for the last 25 years.

Mega Ram Temple Inauguration Today, History At Ayodhya

Mega Ram Temple Inauguration Today, History At Ayodhya

Security has been tightened in Ayodhya for the Ram temple event

Ayodhya:
From night vision devices to CCTV cameras with artificial intelligence (AI), Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya has been secured tightly for the Ram temple consecration ceremony. The temple has been decorated with tonnes of flowers and colourful lights.

Here’s your 10-point cheatsheet to this big story

  1. Invitees to the pran pratishtha ceremony started arriving yesterday. Once a quiet town, it is now resplendent with new infrastructure and religious fervour, a day before the seminal event in India’s political and religious history.

  2. Multicoloured flowers bedecked the town, and recordings of ‘Ram dhun’ played from loudspeakers and people dressed as Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman paraded down the streets.

  3. Ceremonial gates depicting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in floral patterns and illumination visible at night add to the aura of the ancient city, which has undergone a massive infrastructural growth. “The entire country is chanting the name of Lord Ram,” said Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

  4. The streets and skyline of Ayodhya are covered with saffron flags fluttering from rooftops of buildings, small and big. Cut-outs of the Ram temple along with Lord Ram have been put up at Lata Mangeshkar Chowk.

  5. The main ceremony will begin at 12.20 pm and is expected to end by 1 pm. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will then address a gathering of more than 7,000 people, including seers and prominent personalities, at the venue. The entire event will be telecast live.

  6. Surveillance drones have been scanning the ground for suspicious activity. Ayodhya’s ‘yellow zone’ has 10,715 AI-based cameras with face-recognition technology.

  7. To bolster emergency response capabilities, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed. SDRF teams will conduct boat patrols on the Saryu river.

  8. An anti-drone system has been deployed by the UP Special Security Force (SSF), adding an extra layer of security against potential aerial threats. “Ayodhya is under the watchful eye of drones equipped with AI, alongside anti-mine drones, as part of the concerted efforts to enhance security in the temple town,” a senior police officer said.

  9. The anti-mine drones fly at a height of one metre above the ground, and are equipped with advanced technology like spectrometer wavelength detection for detecting underground explosives.

  10. The new idol of Ram Lalla, sculpted by Arun Yogiraj, was placed inside the temple. The idol shows the Ram Lalla as a five-year-old standing on a lotus, also crafted from the same stone.

AIIMS Reverses Decision On Half-Day For Ram Temple Event After Huge Backlash

AIIMS Reverses Decision On Half-Day For Ram Temple Event After Huge Backlash

Patients from across the country come to AIIMS-Delhi for affordable healthcare

New Delhi:

Amid a massive row, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi today reversed its decision to shut non-critical services till 2.30 pm tomorrow for the grand consecration event at Ayodhya Ram Temple.

This comes a day after the premier healthcare facility announced a half-day break for staff in non-critical services. While the official note did not specifically mention if Out Patient Department (OPD) services would be available, it was feared that outdoor patients would not be able to consult specialists during the break.

A memorandum issued by Rajesh Kumar, AIIMS-Delhi’s administrative officer, yesterday had referred to the central government’s announcement of a half-day for government employees tomorrow. “It is notified for information of all the employees that the Institute will remain half day closed till 14.30 hrs on 22.01.2024,” the memorandum said. It, however, added that “all critical clinical services” shall remain functional.

The notification sparked a huge outcry, with many pointing out that patients wait for weeks, and sometimes, months to get an appointment at the premier healthcare facility. To shut OPD services suddenly would severely inconvenience them, especially those who had travelled from outside Delhi in the hope of good, affordable healthcare at the state-run facility.

This morning, AIIMS-Delhi issued a fresh notification, stating that the OPD “shall remain open to attend to patients with appointment in order to prevent any inconvenience to them and to facilitate patient care”.

Safdarjung Hospital, another key healthcare facility in the national capital, has said OPD registration will take place between 8 am and 10 am and all registered patients will be attended to. The hospital will run pharmacy services till noon but elective surgeries won’t take place.

Earlier, Opposition leaders had strongly slammed the AIIMS announcement of a half-day break for the Ayodhya event. Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi had hit out at the move with a sarcastic post on X. “Hello humans, Please don’t go into a medical emergency on 22nd, and if you do schedule it for post 2pm since AIIMS Delhi is taking time off to welcome Maryada Purushottam Ram,” she had posted.

“PS: However, wonder if Lord Ram would agree that health services are disrupted to welcome him. Hey Ram, Hey Ram!,” she added.

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale, too, criticised the move yesterday. “India’s largest Government Hospital AIIMS Delhi will remain closed till 2:30 pm on Monday. There are literally people sleeping outside in the cold at AIIMS gates waiting for an appointment. The poor and dying can wait because priority is given to Modi’s desperation for cameras and PR,” Mr Gokhale posted on X.

The centre has announced a half-day leave for government employees tomorrow so that they can watch live telecast of the pran pratishta ceremony in Ayodhya, last-minute preparations for which are underway.

Several states have announced half or full day leave for government offices and educational institutions tomorrow.
