After Shops Get “60% Kannada” Order, Pro-Kannada Groups Go On Rampage

Bengaluru:

The language row in Karnataka escalated sharply Wednesday after pro-Kannada groups held violent protests at various parts in state capital Benglauru, including the Kempegowda International Airport.

There are also protests outside a hotel; the video showed women and men, some in yellow and red scarfs (the colours of the Kannada flag) storming the courtyard and tearing down English signage.

One video showed a man attacking the English signboard of a salon and spa, as truckloads of men in red and yellow scarfs drive past. In another, men waving red and yellow flags protest outside an Airtel store; one man is defacing the sign by spraying black paint over the shop’s red signboard, which is in English.

The protesters are demanding the immediate implementation of an order by the city’s civic body, which directs all businesses to have 60 per cent of their signs in Kannada. The order followed a meeting with the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, seen by some as a right-wing group pushing the language row.

BBMP chief Tushar Giri Nath said commercial stores in the civic body’s jurisdiction had till February 28 to comply, failing which they could face legal action, including suspension of business licences.

The language row is back in focus after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said in October “everyone living in this state should learn to speak Kannada”. “We are all Kannadigas. People speaking different languages have settled in here (and) everyone living in this state should learn to speak Kannada.”

In his earlier tenure too Mr Siddaramaiah had pushed for the wider use of the local language, and it was in his previous tenure that Hindi names of Bengaluru metro stations were targeted and covered with tape.

Merchant Ship Was Hit By Drone 400 Km West Of Indian Coast, Confirms Navy

Merchant Ship Was Hit By Drone 400 Km West Of Indian Coast, Confirms Navy

A Navy team carried out a detailed inspection of the ship.

The merchant vessel MV Chem Pluto was struck by a drone 400 km of the Indian coastline, a Navy analysis confirmed today. The ship with 21 crew members (20 Indians and 1 Vietnamese) arrived at the Mumbai port under the protection of Indian Coast Guard ship Vikram today, two days after it was struck in the Arabian sea.

On its arrival, an explosive ordnance disposal team of the Navy carried out a detailed inspection of the ship.

Analysis of the area of attack and debris found on the ship pointed towards a drone attack and further forensic and technical analysis will be required to ascertain all the details, Navy officials said.

Several images showed the damage caused to the stern (rear) of the ship by the suspected drone attack.

The attack came amid a flurry of new drone and missile attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels on the vital Red Sea shipping lane since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, with the group claiming to act in solidarity with Gaza.

Amid the spate of recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Arabian Sea, the Navy has deployed warships INS Mormugao, INS Kochi and INS Kolkata to maintain a deterrent presence in the region, the officials said. Long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft P8Is are being regularly tasked to maintain domain awareness, they said.

The Pentagon claimed the tanker ship was targeted by a drone “fired from Iran.” It was the first time the Pentagon openly accused Iran of directly targeting ships since the start of Israel’s war on Hamas, which is backed by Tehran.

The Navy and the Indian Coast Guard swung into action by deploying their assets including a warship and maritime patrol aircraft on Saturday soon after the UK Maritime Trade Operations, or UKMTO, reported the drone attack on the ship.

The UKMTO is a British military organisation that provides maritime security information and largely acts as the primary point of contact for merchant vessels involved in maritime incidents.

The vessel was reportedly carrying crude oil to the New Mangalore port from the Al Jubail port in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operation by its company-in-charge at Mumbai. The ship is scheduled to undergo mandatory checks by the various inspecting authorities before undertaking Ship to Ship (STS) transfer of cargo. This is likely to be followed by docking and repairs of the damaged portion of MV Chem Pluto.

KL Rahul To Keep Wickets In 1st Test, Says Rahul Dravid. Ex India Star Not Happy | Cricket News

KL Rahul To Keep Wickets In 1st Test, Says Rahul Dravid. Ex India Star Not Happy | Cricket News

India head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that KL Rahul, who has not kept wickets in red-ball cricket much, will take up the role behind the stumps for the first red-ball contest against South Africa, starting December 26. Rahul wasn’t India’s designated wicket-keeper in any of the three formats during his early days in the team but made the transition quite well in white-ball cricket. He is now India’s No. 1 choice behind the stumps in both T20Is and ODIs. Now, the team management wants to see how he does behind the stumps in Tests. But, former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel isn’t in agreement.

Parthiv, taking to social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), said that the wicket-keeper’s role in the Test team should be given to a player who has kept wickets in Ranji Trophy and First Class wicket.

“India’s test match wicketkeeper should be someone who is keeping regularly in Ranji trophy or first-class cricket….#imho #INDvSA #IndianCricket,” he posted on X.

On Sunday, Dravid gave his vote of confidence to Rahul for the wicket-keeper’s role while speaking in a press conference.

“I see it as an exciting challenge, an opportunity for him to certainly do something different. Obviously, with Ishan not being available this opportunity came up, we had a couple of keepers to choose from and Rahul is one of them.

“We do understand it is not something he has done as often (keeping in Tests). But he has been doing it regularly in 50 overs cricket and that takes a lot out of your body. He has prepared well over the last five to six months, he has done a lot of keeping,” Dravid said in the press conference.

“This will be a new and exciting challenge for him. I guess one of the things is there’s not going to be that much spin bowling, so that will ease him into the role a little bit, something how it goes and pans out,” the coach said.

Woman Claims Sexual Assault By Hospital Staff, Delhi Minister Orders Probe

Delhi Health Minister directed the constitution of an enquiry committee headed by the Health Secretary.

New Delhi:

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has directed the chief secretary to constitute an enquiry committee to look into the allegations of molestation and harassment of women contractual workers at a hospital in north Delhi’s Burari.

A woman, working as a housekeeping staff on a contract basis in Burari Government Hospital, has accused her manager and three supervisors of molesting and harassing her and two other employees, police said.

Based on the woman’s complaint, her manager and three supervisors of the firm that provides multitasking manpower to the hospital have been booked and asked to join the probe, a police official said.

In an official communication to the chief secretary, Mr Bharadwaj said he had learnt from social media that “some unfortunate incident related to outraging the modesty of women & sexual harassment of outsourced workers” has been reported at the Burari Hospital.

“However, it appears Delhi Police has been soft against the accused persons, thereby causing much outrage on social media. Such incidents cannot be tolerated in any situation. You are directed to ensure that the strictest action is taken by Delhi Police against the culprits,” read the note.

In her complaint, the woman claimed the four accused molested and harassed her and two other female employees on December 17 and December 19.

On December 17, the accused allegedly molested the women and on December 19 they threatened to sack them if she did not agree to their unreasonable demands, an official said.

Mr Bharadwaj directed the constitution of an enquiry committee headed by the Health Secretary.

“He must submit a preliminary report in 24 hours while the final report must be submitted within a week.

“Strictest punishment must be recommended against the culprits. Please submit the ATR within 6 hours of the receipt of this note,” the minister said.

The minister said he has learnt that the services of accused supervisors and managers have been terminated by the outsourcing firm.

“However, strictest action must also be ensured against the firm if they are also found guilty,” he said.

Police said a case under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 509 ( Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) was registered at Burari Police station on December 19.

Focus On Votes, Ram Temple: Inside Story Of Key BJP Meeting

Focus On Votes, Ram Temple: Inside Story Of Key BJP Meeting

PM Modi has set the BJP a target of winning 35 crore votes in the 2024 elections.

New Delhi:

With the Assembly polls behind them, both of India’s biggest political parties have turned their focus to the all-important Lok Sabha elections, which are due in less than four months. This was borne out by two key meetings held by the BJP and the Congress on Saturday, which also reflected the very different positions the parties find themselves in.

While the two-day BJP meeting of national office-bearers, which ended on Saturday, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi exhorting workers to gear up for the campaign and the party setting a target of getting 35 crore votes in the 2024 elections, the Congress meeting was focused on working out seat-sharing with allies from the INDIA bloc, which was formed to take on the ruling party.

‘Mission Mode’

During the BJP meeting of national office bearers and state presidents, which began on Friday, PM Modi asked workers and prepare for the Lok Sabha elections in mission mode. Sources said the Prime Minister also set the party a target of winning 35 crore votes in the 2024 elections, against the 22.9 crore it managed to get in 2019.

The BJP meet, according to the sources, also focused on the Ram Temple consecration on January 22. It was decided that workers would be asked to give out as much information on the Ram Temple as possible on social media platforms and hold discussions on it. They will also be instructed to arrange for live telecast of the consecration ceremony in their respective areas on January 22 and organise visits to Ayodhya after the consecration for people from every state.

“To achieve the increase in votes, a strategy was formulated to reach 7 crore beneficiaries of various government schemes,” a source said.

PM Modi will address the youth across the country in January and it has been decided to run a campaign to connect with women, youth, farmers and the poor.

Workers will also be asked to stay in touch with every voter at the booth level and visit their homes and meet them. One of the key issues they have been asked to discuss is India’s growing power on the global stage, the sources said.

Alliance Panel Meet

The National Alliance Committee of the Congress held its first meeting on Saturday. The five-member panel was formed earlier this week to discuss seat-sharing and alliances with other political parties from the INDIA bloc for the 2024 elections. Mukul Wasnik is the convenor and the other members are Union minister Salman Khurshid, former chief ministers Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel, and Mohan Prakash.

After the meeting, Mr Wasnik said, “We will first speak to the state units. We will decide on a  seat-sharing formula soon. There is no deadline set for this. But we will decide as soon as possible,” he said.

The Congress has been criticised by some INDIA allies after its defeats in the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh elections, who have also said that the party should be more accommodating in seat-sharing conversations.
