Develop Rules To Probe ‘Love-Jihad’ Cases: Himanta Sarma To Cops

Develop Rules To Probe ‘Love-Jihad’ Cases: Himanta Sarma To Cops

Guwahati:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday urged the police to develop a standard operating Procedure (SOP) for probing cases of ‘love-jihad’ in the state.

The root cause of ‘love jihad’ is forceful religious conversions, Mr Sarma claimed in his address to the superintendents of police at a convention in Bongaigaon.

“Besides, an act will be implemented soon in the state through which the marriageable age will be legally fixed for all communities, multiple marriages will be stopped and more legislative steps will be taken so that when arrests are made for violating the norms, the accused do not get bail,” Mr Sarma said.

The chief minister has been claiming that the triple murder case in Golaghat where a 25-year old Muslim man killed his Hindu wife and her parents on Monday was a case of ‘love jihad’, a term used by right-wing groups to allege that Muslim men lure Hindu women to convert through marriage.

He also claimed there have been many tragic incidents of suicide by girls who have been victims of ‘love jihad’.

Mr Sarma had earlier claimed on Thursday that there will be peace in the country if Hindu and Muslim men marry women of their respective communities. The chief minister told the convention that another operation to combat child marriages in the state will be launched in September and legislative backing will be given to ensure prosecution of the accused held for polygamy and child marriages.

Mr Sarma urged all SPs of the state to be prepared for more arrests in September as there will be another round of action against child marriage then.

”Whenever a child marriage comes to our notice we will have to prosecute the accused under POCSO as it is a secular Act and does not deal with any religion,” he said. The POCSO Act applies equally to all citizens of all religions who commit sexual offences against children.

”There are some vintage acts that have come to our notice. We will repeal them as it comes in the way of taking action against child marriage,” he said. Mr Sarma said crime against women in Assam has drastically come down to 14,030 cases in 2022 as against 29,046 cases in 2021, which is much below the annual average of 27,240 cases between 2017-21. Crimes against children in the state have also come down to 4,084 as against 5,282 in previous years.

High profile cases must be tried in special courts, special public prosecutors must be engaged and charge sheets must be filed within the stipulated period to serve as a deterrent in future, he added.

Sanju Samson vs Suryakumar Yadav: ODI ‘Comparison Stats’ Paint Intriguing Picture | Cricket News

Sanju Samson vs Suryakumar Yadav: ODI ‘Comparison Stats’ Paint Intriguing Picture | Cricket News

As India skipper Rohit Sharma announced the playing XI for the first ODI against West Indies, there was no place for wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson. While Ishan Kishan got the wicket-keeper’s spot in the team, it was Suryakumar Yadav who earned the nod at the No. 3 spot despite the horrific form he has been in ODI cricket of late. Seeing Surya struggle to score runs in the 50-over format once again, many fans sympathised with Samson who remains on the bench despite proving to be an asset in his recent outings in one-day cricket.

While Suryakumar incurred three consecutive ducks in his previous three ODIs — all against Australia — his last 6 innings weren’t great too. The middle-order batter’s last 6 scores read 19, 0, 0, 0, 14 and 31.

In comparison, Samson’s last 6 scores are: 36, 2*, 30*, 86*, 15 and 43*. When compared to Suryakumar, Samson’s average is also extremely high, at 66 in 11 matches. Surya, on the other hand, averages 23.78 in 24 matches.

“We are gonna field first, no particular reason, just that we wanted to try a few different things and see where we are as a team. We want to head into the World Cup with a clear mindset. For us, the results are also important. At times, we are going to try out different players but we don’t want to compromise on our results. All cricketers around the world who are playing all formats need to adapt well. Hopefully, we can get what we want here. We have got four seamers and two spinners,” India skipper Rohit had said at the time of the toss, suggesting he wants to try a few different things as the team prepares for the World Cup.

Surya, who arguably remains the most fearsome batter in T20 cricket, hasn’t been able to convert his shortest-format form into one-day cricket. While the team management and selectors remain convinced of his skill, the Mumbai batter would need to repay their faith with performances, especially considering there are only about 2 months to go before the ODI World Cup begins.

For Samson, it remains a waiting game, as it arguably always was.

Rahul Gandhi Fights “Fire” With “Fire” After Smriti Irani’s Manipur Charge

Rahul Gandhi Fights “Fire” With “Fire” After Smriti Irani’s Manipur Charge

Rahul Gandhi has attacked PM Modi for the violence in Manipur.

New Delhi:

A day after Union Minister Smriti Irani’s scathing accusation that he set “Manipur on fire,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has fired back, questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the three-month-long ethnic clashes in the state and pinning the strife on the ruling party’s ideology.

In a video shared on social media by the Congress, Mr Gandhi retorted, “Why is he not speaking anything about Manipur? This is because Narendra Modi ji has nothing to do with Manipur. They know that their ideology has burnt Manipur.”

The heated exchange follows Ms Irani’s allegations in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, where she accused opposition parties, including Mr Gandhi, of remaining silent on crimes against women in non-BJP-ruled states. Ms Irani didn’t pull any punches, charging Mr Gandhi with igniting Manipur’s unrest.

“When will you have the courage to tell us how women are raped in Congress-ruled states? When will you have the guts to tell how Rahul Gandhi put Manipur on fire? Do not cast aspersions on women ministers in this cabinet,” she challenged amid loud cheers from her party’s MPs.

Mr Gandhi, however, redirected the blame, accusing the BJP and its ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of being “power-hungry” and divisive.

He made these remarks during a virtual Youth Congress program, stating, “The BJP-RSS only want power and can do anything to get power. For power, they will burn Manipur, they will burn the entire country. They don’t care about the sorrow and pain of the country.”

The Congress party shared excerpts of Gandhi’s fiery speech on its Twitter handle. This comes amidst increasing demands by the opposition, led by Congress, for a statement from the Prime Minister on the situation in Manipur, followed by a comprehensive discussion on the issue.

This verbal sparring in the Rajya Sabha is the latest in a series of heated exchanges since the monsoon session began last Thursday. Amidst the tumult, both ruling and opposition members have submitted numerous adjournment notices supporting their respective demands.

US Hiding Info On Alien Craft: Ex Intel Officer In Congressional Testimony

US Hiding Info On Alien Craft: Ex Intel Officer In Congressional Testimony

Washington:

We are not alone — and American authorities are covering up the evidence, a former US intelligence officer told a congressional committee on Wednesday.

David Grusch testified that he “absolutely” believes the government is in possession of unidentified anomalous phenomenon, or UAPs — which has replaced UFO in official parlance — as well as remains of their operators.

“I was informed, in the course of my official duties, of a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering program,” Grusch said.

“I made the decision, based on the data I collected, to report this information to my superiors and multiple inspectors general, and in effect becoming a whistleblower,” he said.

Pressed for details in the course of the hearing, Grusch repeatedly said he could not comment in a public setting because the information is classified.

He said the US government is hiding information on UAPs not only from the public but from Congress, and that he “personally interviewed” people with direct knowledge of non-human craft.

“My testimony is based on information I’ve been given by individuals with a longstanding track record of legitimacy and service to this country — many of whom also shared compelling evidence in the form of photography, official documentation, and classified oral testimony,” Grusch told lawmakers.

US Representative Tim Burchett supported the idea that the government was concealing information, saying at the opening of the hearing — which also featured testimony from two former Navy officers who said they witnessed UAPs — that “we’re going to uncover the cover-up.”

“This is an issue of government transparency. We can’t trust a government that does not trust its people,” he said.

But the head of the Pentagon office set up to identify UAPs that pose a potential threat told lawmakers earlier this year it had not identified signs of alien activity.

The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office “has found no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology, or objects that defy the known laws of physics,” Sean Kirkpatrick testified in April.

The US government has however begun taking the issue of UAPs more seriously in recent years.

NASA held its first public meeting on UAPs in May, calling for a more rigorous scientific approach to clarify the origin of hundreds of mysterious sightings.

The Pentagon also began paying closer attention after a slew of inexplicable sightings from US Navy and Air Force pilots.

The central worry was that the sightings could be of unknown aerial surveillance technology China was using to collect intelligence on US defenses.

Monsoon Fury Shifts To South India, Red Alert For Heavy Rain In Three States

Monsoon Fury Shifts To South India, Red Alert For Heavy Rain In Three States

Monsoon alert has been issued in several districts in South India.

Hyderabad:

After wreaking havoc in several North Indian states, incessant rain has now also moved to the southern states and authorities have urged locals to stay indoors and take precautions.

Red alerts forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rain have been issued in several districts of Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala.

With heavy rain predicted today, Telangana has declared a holiday today for all schools and colleges.

Two girls were washed away in an overflowing stream in Mahabubnagar district in Telangana on Tuesday as heavy rain led to inundation of low-lying areas and disruption of road links at several places in the state. The two teenaged girls, who were crossing the stream, did not realise the current of water and got swept away, police said.

To prevent traffic jams, the Hyderabad police has urged IT companies to conduct a phase-wise logout of their employees.

In Karnataka, the weather department has asked people in coastal regions to avoid areas that are prone to waterlogging and asked them to stay away from vulnerable structures which might collapse due to incessant rains.
