“Sudden Attack” On Bangladesh Airbase, Locals Clash With Airmen, 1 Killed

Dhaka:

A man was killed and several others injured in a clash Monday between a group of local people and air force personnel at an airbase in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, officials said.

The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) – the media wing of the military – in a statement said the “miscreants” attacked the Bangladesh Air Force Base near Cox’s Bazar’s Samitipara. “Bangladesh Air Force is taking necessary actions in this regard,” it said.

The ISPR said that “some local miscreants” of the Samitipara area adjacent to the beach resort town “launched a sudden attack” on the airbase after a biker was stopped at a checkpoint as he was crossing the base area without any papers for the vehicle.

It said the biker was taken inside the base for interrogation when over 200 people marched towards the base. The security personnel tried to stop them, sparking a clash that left four Air Force personnel injured.

Deputy Commissioner of the district, Mohammad Salahuddin, said: one person was killed, and several others were injured in the incident”. The official said a thorough investigation would be conducted into the cause of the attack.

The officer-in-charge of a police box at a local hospital where the wounded were being treated said the incident took place at around noon. “Shihab Kabir, 30, a local trader, was shot during the clash,” the officer said.

The incident sparked a social media uproar, with people claiming that the youth died of gunshots fired by the Air Force personnel. Bangladesh’s defence ministry came up with a statement, saying BAF men did not fire any live bullets during the violence.

The ISPR said the Air Force personnel fired “blank shots” to protect a key installation, but no shot was fired on the people. It termed the incident to an “evil motive” of some “vested quarters”. “Bangladesh Air Force expresses its deep shock at the death of the youth and conveys its sympathy to the members of his family,” it said.

According to a local journalist, the government plans to expand the airport and relocate the people in the neighbourhood, a proposal opposed by some residents.

The attack occurred hours after Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen (retd.) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

In a pre-dawn press conference at his residence, Mr Chowdhury said that “cohorts” of the ousted Awami League regime of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina were out to destabilise the country, but “in no way they will be spared”.

“We will ensure that terrorists cannot stand anywhere and prevent crimes at any cost,” he said, adding that law enforcement agencies were asked to strengthen their patrolling across the country.

Bangladesh’s security forces have arrested over 8,600 people in a two-week crackdown named “Operation Devil Hunt” that targeted gangs allegedly linked with the ousted Hasina government.

The arrests come amid growing concerns about rising crime levels, particularly in Dhaka, with police saying the number of robberies had doubled since January last year. “Operation Devil Hunt will continue. We won’t let the perpetrators sleep or rest. I have ordered the forces to intensify patrolling,” Mr Chowdhury told reporters.

Mr Chowdhury’s emergency briefing comes as students, who led the July-August 2024 uprising eventually toppling the Awami League regime, expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, with many demanding his resignation.

In a related development, Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said on Monday that the military must continue working to maintain law and order until Bangladesh gets an elected government.

“We initially thought the task would be completed quickly, allowing us to return to the cantonment. We have been working for a long period now. We must exercise patience and fulfil our professional responsibilities with dedication,” he said at an event at suburban Savar Cantonment.

General Zaman said it was imperative that while performing duties “we must avoid the use of force, which may be applied only when necessary”.

Champions Trophy: Huge Babar Azam Drama Ahead Of India Clash, PCB Chief Tells Team To… | Cricket News

Champions Trophy: Huge Babar Azam Drama Ahead Of India Clash, PCB Chief Tells Team To… | Cricket News

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam was conspicuous by his absence from the team’s training and there was no clarity on his availability for the Champions Trophy clash against India on Sunday even as the country’s cricket board chief Mohsin Naqvi urged the side to win “at any cost”. Speculation is rife that he may be not be considered for the match after he was not seen at the practice session on Saturday evening. The practice was attended by PCB chief Naqvi and Azam was the only player who chose to take the day off.

Azam copped a lot of criticism for a 94-ball 64 in the 60-run loss to New Zealand in the opening match. He was lambasted for failing to accelerate while the asking rate crept up in the chase of 320 runs in Karachi.

Interim head coach Aqib Javed, who addressed the media after practice, did not give any specific reason for Azam’s absence, saying that the former captain chose to rest.

Last night, Naqvi met the Pakistan cricket team at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, and urged them to win Sunday’s crucial match against India “at any cost” to silence critics. Pakistan would be knocked out of the tournament if they lose this game.

The team was scheduled to practice for about two hours but the proceedings were halted within an hour as Naqvi took “stock of things”, met captain Mohammad Rizwan and head coach Aqeeb Javed and discussed cricketing matters with them.

PTI has learned through reliable sources that he urged the captain, coach and players to give it their best shot against India and win the match to “silence their critics, including himself.” He was seen having a long chat with pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.

Naqvi, who was reportedly unhappy with the selection of the team, made it a point to meet each and every player, coach and support staff.

Later, Naqvi told media-persons that the Pakistani team was ready to face India and do well against them.

“It would be a great game and our team is fully prepared and in my opinion, they are in form. We are with our team, whether they win or lose,” he said.

When asked about Pakistan having to play India here despite being the hosts of Champions trophy, he quipped: “You should ask this to Indians if the same would have happened to them, then how they would have felt?” India had refused to travel to Pakistan citing security concerns and are playing their share of Champions Trophy matches in Dubai. Even the final of the tournament will be held in Dubai if India go the distance.

New FBI Director Kash Patel's Family Has Roots In This Gujarat Village

New FBI Director Kash Patel's Family Has Roots In This Gujarat Village

Ahmedabad:

Indian-American Kash Patel, confirmed by the US Senate to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), traces his roots to Bhadran village in Gujarat’s Anand district, from where his family migrated to Uganda 70 to 80 years ago, members of the community he belongs to said on Friday.

New York-born Patel (44), who belongs to the Patidar community, has become the first Indian-American to lead the premier law enforcement agency of the United States.

Leaders of the Patidar community said all close family members of Mr Patel are settled in foreign countries. They sold their ancestral houses in Bhadran once they shifted to Africa.

Chh Gam Patidar Mandal, an organisation of the community based in Anand, maintains a `vanshavali’ (family tree) of its members.

“In the ‘vanshavali’ we have names of Kash Patel’s father Pramod Patel and also his brothers and grandfather,” said secretary of the organisation and Anand district BJP present Rajesh Patel.

Rajesh Patel told PTI that though Kash Patel’s name was yet to be added to the family tree, the entry of 18 generations of his family is there in the ‘vanshavali’ and it is stored in their office along with those of all members of their community.

“As per our records, the family used to live in Moti Khadki area of Bhadran village and they migrated to Uganda some 70 to 80 years ago,” he informed.

“The family sold their ancestral house and land and all of his relatives are settled in foreign countries, especially in the USA. Now, when a family member of Kash Patek comes back to India we will seek their permission to record their next generation’s names, including his own name, in the ‘vanshavali’,” Rajesh Patel informed.

“We have not met Kash Patel as the family has not visited Anand in recent years. But many in our community know them as the Patidar community is a close-knit one,” he said.

Rajesh Patel said, as far as he knows, that the family had returned for a brief time to India after their expulsion from the African country in the 1970.

“Those Indians who were expelled from Uganda had come to India for a brief stay as they had applied for asylum in the UK, US or Canada. Kash Patel’s family had also come here for a brief stopover and then moved to Canada once their applications were accepted,” he said.

From Canada, they shifted to the US, where Kash Patel was born in 1980, Rajesh Patel maintained.

Indians who migrated to Uganda were expelled from the African country by dictator Idi Amin who seized power in a military coup in 1971. In 1972, he ordered the Indian community to leave his country in 90 days.

Chh Gam Patidar Mandal is an organization of the Patidar community from six villages/towns of Anand district — Dharmaj, Nadiad, Sojitra, Bhadran, Vaso and Karamsad. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first home minister of the country, hailed from Karamsad.

The new FBI chief served as the former Chief of Staff to Acting Secretary of Defence Christopher Miller. He was responsible for leading the Secretary’s mission at the Department, including his executive staff and providing counsel to him on all matters concerning its operations, the US Department of Defence’s short biography on Kash Patel said.

A native of New York, Kash Patel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Richmond before returning to New York to earn his law degree, along with a Certificate in International Law from University College London Faculty of Laws in the United Kingdom, it said.

Kash Patel, a trained lawyer, is an ice-hockey fan and has been playing the sport since he was six, it said.

“We are Gujarati,” he had told PTI in an earlier interview in the United States.

Trump's Aide Congratulates New FBI Director Kash Patel In Bollywood Style

Trump's Aide Congratulates New FBI Director Kash Patel In Bollywood Style

Washington, United States:

Kashyap ‘Kash’ Patel, a loyalist of US President Donald Trump, has been confirmed as the first Indian-origin Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director. The Republican-controlled US Senate approved him by a 51-49 vote on Thursday. Dan Scavino, assistant to the President and White House Deputy Chief of Staff welcomed Mr Patel in a Bollywood style.

Mr Scavino shared a dance clip on X of the song ‘Malhari’ from the movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’ featuring actor Ranveer Singh – except Mr Singh’s face is replaced with Mr Patel. The song roughly translates to: “Let’s play the song of happiness…We have crushed our enemies”.

“Congratulations to the new Director of the FBI, @Kash_Patel,” Mr Scavino captioned it.

The 47-second clip has so far received over three million views and more than 10,000 likes.

The Republican-led US Senate confirmed Mr Patel in a narrow majority vote of 51-49, with two Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins voting with all Democrats against confirming Mr Trump’s nominee. However, Mr Patel overcame their opposition and that of the Democrats, one of whom warned at a press conference outside the FBI headquarters in Washington DC, that Mr Patel “will cause evil in this building behind us”.

Shortly after his confirmation, Mr Patel thanked Mr Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi for their support and emphasised his commitment to restoring public trust in the FBI. He also vowed to rebuild the agency into one that is “transparent, accountable, and committed to justice”.

“The FBI has a storied legacy-from the “G-Men” to safeguarding our nation in the wake of 9/11. The American people deserve an FBI that is transparent, accountable, and committed to justice. The politicalization of our justice system has eroded public trust-but that ends today. My mission as Director is clear: let good cops be cops-and rebuild trust in the FBI,” he wrote in a post on X.

“Mission First. America Always. Let’s get to work,” the new FBI director added.

Born in New York in 1980 to Gujarati parents, Mr Patel grew up in East Africa. He graduated from the Garden City High School in Long Island. According to his Department of Defense profile, Mr Patel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Richmond before returning to New York to earn his law degree and a certificate in International Law from the University College London Faculty of Laws in the United Kingdom.

He has also served as the National Security Advisor and Senior Counsel for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI).
