“No Chief Minister Face, No Agenda”: Arvind Kejriwal Counters BJP Attack

“No Chief Minister Face, No Agenda”: Arvind Kejriwal Counters BJP Attack

Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi launched registration for Mahila Samman Yojana

The BJP does not have any vision for Delhi and its sole agenda is to abuse Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said today. “The BJP neither has an agenda nor a Chief Minister face for this election. BJP knows only one thing: how to abuse Kejriwal,” the AAP national convener said as the party started doorstep registrations for the Mahila Samman Yojana with an eye on Assembly polls due in February.

The BJP, on the other hand, came out with an aarop patra (allegation list) against the AAP government in the national capital. BJP MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur said Delhi’s government is the most inefficient in the country. “They (AAP) said free water for all, today people pay thousands to tankers. They said they will make Delhi pollution-free, see the AQI for yourself. They said corruption-free, ministers have gone behind bars,” Mr Thakur said.

Targeting the AAP government on the pollution in Yamuna, Mr Thakur said, “My Purvanchali brothers and sisters who celebrate Chhath, Kejriwal’s government made Yamuna so polluted they we cannot even celebrate our festival there. Kejriwal ji you said you will take a dip, 2025 is here, it’s time.”

The BJP also slammed AAP on the issue of women’s safety. “Why weren’t you able to use Nirbhaya fund? What happened to those fast -track courts you were going to set up?” Mr Thakur asked.

Law enforcement has been a contentious issue between Delhi’s AAP government and the Centre. Delhi Police reports to the Union Home Ministry and the ruling AAP has repeatedly sought its control and criticised the Centre for crimes in the national capital.

“I am asking them, all seven MPs in Delhi are from BJP, why are you not taking care of law enforcement. It’s deteriorating day by day,” Mr Kejriwal said today, countering the BJP’s attack.

Responding to the BJP’s ‘chargesheet’, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “Delhi citizens know us better. Bharatiya Jhoota Party’s politics is based on lies.”

Mr Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi today launched doorstep registration for Mahila Samman Yojana and the Sanjivani medical insurance scheme. “Under Mahila Samman Yojana, every woman who registers will get Rs 2,100 every month. And those over 60 who register for Sanjivani Yojana, the government will bear cost for their treatment,” he said.

Assembly polls in Delhi are due in February and the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is pushing for a third consecutive term. Mr Kejriwal stepped down as Chief Minister after he was granted bail in a corruption case. He has said he would return to the top office only after the “people’s verdict in this election. The BJP, meanwhile, is going all out to turn the tables on AAP and ensure its defeat.

AAP vs BJP As Delhi Tableau Rejected For Republic Day Parade Yet Again

AAP vs BJP As Delhi Tableau Rejected For Republic Day Parade Yet Again

New Delhi:

Delhi will not have a tableau in the traditional Republic Day parade at the Rajpath again this year. This would be the fourth time the national capital has not been included — a situation that has sparked a war of words again between Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP. Mr Kejriwal, who headed the Delhi government for almost a decade, led his party’s attack on the BJP — his comments coloured by the coming assembly election.

“For the last so many years, the tableau of Delhi is not allowed to participate in the parade. What kind of politics is this? Why do they hate the people of Delhi so much? Why should the people of Delhi vote for them?” Mr Kejriwal said in a pointed message.

“They have no vision for the people of Delhi. They only abuse Kejriwal. Should we vote for them just for this? Why are the tableau and the people of Delhi being stopped from participating in the 26th January parade?” he said.

Delhi, he added, is the capital of India and should be represented every year in the January 26 parade.

The BJP claimed Mr Kejriwal’s comments indicated his “anarchist nature” and questioned what the former Chief Minister wished to display.

“I want to ask him what he wants to show (in the tableau of Delhi). The severe overflow where more than 60 people died… or the ‘Sheeshmahal’ that he has made by looting the money of people,” said Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva.

“The tableau of the whole country is displayed in the parade of Republic Day. A committee decides the tableau. Now, Arvind Kejriwal wants to do politics in this too,” he said.

“We have not forgotten the Republic Day of 2014 when Arvind Kejriwal staged a protest,” Mr Sachdeva added.

Last year too, Delhi was not allowed a tableau in the parade. Senior AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said it was the third time in a row and claimed it was the BJP’s “revenge” after losing to AAP in the Punjab assembly election.

Mr Bharadwaj said it’s not a coincidence that Punjab’s tableau proposal was also rejected.

Officials said the last time Delhi’s tableau featured in the Republic Day parade was in 2021. It showcased the Shahjahanabad redevelopment project.

Google Slashes 10% Of Managerial Staff In Hunt For 'Googleyness': Report

Google Slashes 10% Of Managerial Staff In Hunt For 'Googleyness': Report

New Delhi:

Google has laid off 10 per cent of its managerial staff as part of a long-running campaign to increase efficiency by double that number. Multiple news reports said CEO Sundar Pichai, in an all-hands meeting Wednesday, indicated the cuts will come at the manager, director, and vice president roles.

A Google spokesperson told the Business Insider that some employees whose positions had been cut would be “transitioned to individual contributor roles”, while some others were “role eliminations”.

This news follows rapid developments in the AI, or Artificial Intelligence, world and at high-flying rivals like OpenAI, which has released products that industry experts have said can threaten Google Search, its online search business that accounted for over 57 per cent of its revenue last year.

Google responded by introducing generative AI features in its products and the launch this month of Gemini 2.0, its most advanced AI model to date. Mr Pichai said the new model would herald “a new agentic era” with AI models designed to understand and make decisions about the world.

The release sent shares in Google soaring by more than four per cent on Wall Street, a day after the stock already gained 3.5 percent after the release of a breakthrough quantum chip.

The layoffs are also the fourth this year alone, including eliminating “a few hundred” positions from its global advertisements team in January and a 100 more jobs across its cloud unit in June.

Alphabet Inc.-owned Google launched its efficiency drive in September 2022.

By January of the next year, the company had eliminated over 12,000 roles, or 6.4 per cent of its global workforce. In an open letter to employees then, Mr Pichai took “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here”, but said the company had to fuel preceding periods of dramatic growth”.

The eliminations, he said then, followed a “rigorous” and company-wide efficiency audit that included reviewing product areas, functions, levels, and regions across Alphabet.

He also admitted the company could have handled the layoffs better.

“This is difficult for any company to go through. At Google, we really haven’t had a moment quite like that in 25 years… (but) it became clear that if we didn’t act, it would have become worse…”

Meanwhile, in the same meeting, Mr Pichai also spoke about a transformation of the corporate culture and the need to redefine its “Googleyness” – an amorphic term that has meant many things over the years, but is commonly understood as expressing what Google looks for in potential hires.

Pentagon's China Report Has A Startling Revelation About Its Nuclear Weapons

Pentagon's China Report Has A Startling Revelation About Its Nuclear Weapons

Washington DC:

Every year the Pentagon prepares a detailed special report about China’s rapidly-growing military and sends it to the US Congress which then examines it thoroughly. The Pentagon keeps a very close watch on China’s military activities and tracks its progress on various parameters on a yearly basis.

This year’s report has revealed something startling about China’s nuclear weapons stockpile. In an era where the focus of the world is on de-nuclearisation and disarmament, Beijing was found to most-actively adding weapons to its stockpile. At least 100 nuclear warheads have been added to its arsenal in 2024 alone.

The Pentagon report also highlights that China now looks to accelerate the pace of producing even more nuclear weapons and cross the 1,000-nukes mark by 2030. It is estimated that China currently has around 600 nukes in its inventory.

“China has the world’s leading hypersonic missile arsenal and has advanced its development of both conventional and nuclear-armed hypersonic missile technologies,” the report stated. It also noted that China will continue to grow its nuclear arsenal at least till 2035.

A POLICY OF SECRECY AND DECEIT

China keeps everything related to its military and defence a closely-guarded secret. It never divulges any information regarding its army, air force, or navy, and the weapons under their control. Though Beijing formally announces a defence budget annually, the Pentagon believes that is not the true figure.

In 2024, Beijing announced an annual defence outlay of $224 billion, but Pentagon’s report reveals China has spends at least 40 per cent more than what it officially declares. This brings the defence budget anywhere in the range of $350 billion to $450 billion – or roughly half the US defence budget, which is over $880 billion.

Pentagon’s research also highlights Beijing’s wider focus to further modernise its military by developing a range of new missiles, including Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles or ICBMs – both conventional and nuclear – “that could strike Alaska, Hawaii, and the continental United States”.

The Chinese Navy is already the largest in the world with a declared fleet size of more than 370 ships and submarines. This is significantly larger than the fleet size of the US Navy, which is 290 ships and submarines.

China’s air force too is a force to be reckoned with as it has more than 1,200 fighter jets that are fourth-generation military aircraft – at par with some of the most sophisticated fighter jets manufactured by the United States and its allies in Europe. China’s air force has an overall strength close to 2,000 aircraft, which is massive.

US-CHINA DEFENCE TIES

Though there is a basic structure for defence talks between the two nations, and communication does take place at a junior level, China has rejected any high-level dialogue or cooperation with the US.

When US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin reached out to the Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun for a meeting on the sidelines of the defence summit in Laos last month, the latter declined it. Secretary Austin called it “unfortunate” and said that such an attitude is a “setback for the entire region”.

Incoming US President Donald Trump has appointed two fierce China hawks in his administration – Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State and Mike Walz as the US National Security Adviser.

the Chinese government has placed sanctions on Marco Rubio, and in 2020 had banned him from ever entering the country again – something Beijing would need to reconsider when he takes office as Secretary of State.

Weeks before the Trump Administration takes over, NSA-designate Mike Waltz has already urged President-elect Trump to “urgently end the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East in order to counter the greater threat from the Chinese Communist Party”.
