The GPS-based technology will charge the motorists for the exact distance travelled on the highways, Gadkari said.
The Centre plans to launch a GPS-based toll collection system on national highways on a pilot basis in addition to FASTags, Union Minister
Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday.
A consultant has also been appointed for the implementation of the project, the Road Transport and Highways Minister said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
He said that it has been decided to implement the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System initially at selected sections of national highways.
At present, FASTags, an electronic toll collection system, is used in which ‘Radio Frequency Identification’ (RFID) technology is employed to make toll payments. The RFID passive tag on the vehicles is used for making payments directly from the customers linked to prepaid or, savings or current account.
How does a GPS-based toll collection system work?
The GPS-based technology will charge the motorists for the exact distance travelled on the highways, Gadkari said. It involves collecting toll payments via satellite-based GPS (Global Positioning System) imaging on vehicles.
Under this system, the money is deducted from the bank accounts with the identification of the vehicle number plate. The number plate recognition is done via automatic number plate reader (ANPR) cameras installed on the highways.
Difference between FASTags and ANPR tech
The current system of FASTags facilitates the process of electronic payment at the toll plaza, which has a scanner. This allows the vehicle to pass through the plaza, without needing to stop. In the case of the GPS-based system, the toll will be deducted based on the distance measured by ANPR technology, thereby making the toll plazas redundant.
Gadkari said that tech-based initiatives are being introduced to improve the efficiency of the system and promote ease of travel on highways. The move is aimed at streamlining traffic management as the system doesn’t require the vehicles to stop.
Notably, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) collects about Rs 40,000 crore toll revenue at present. This is expected to surge to Rs 1.40 trillion in the next 2-3 years.

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) has reported multiple security vulnerabilities in
Google Chrome Operating system and Microsoft Edge web browser. According to the note published on CERT-in website, these vulnerabilities could be exploited by a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions and gain unauthorised access to users data in Chrome OS and run malicious code on Microsoft Edge.
CERT-in has rated the severity rating for vulnerabilities on both ChromeOS and Microsoft Edge browser as high, suggesting that security threat is high for users who are using outdated versions.
The notification states that due to insufficient data validation in Extensions on Chrome OS, any third-party could persuade a victim to visit a specially crafted web page to exploit these vulnerabilities.
CERT-in in a note recommended users using the Google Chrome OS and Microsoft Edge to immediately update to the latest version or install security patches that are provided by their respective companies.
Microsoft has already released stable channel updates for its Edge browser incorporating the latest security updates.
Earlier, Google released the latest version of the Chrome OS containing security fixes for vulnerabilities mentioned in the CERT-in alert such as insufficient data validation in Extensions.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on Monday that every country needs to have its own artificial intelligence infrastructure in order to take advantage of the economic potential while protecting its own culture.
“You cannot allow that to be done by other people,” Huang said at the World Government Summit in Dubai.
Huang, whose firm has catapulted to a $1.73 trillion stock market value due to its dominance of the market for high-end AI chips, said his company is ‘democratizing’ access to AI due to swift efficiency gains in AI computing.
“The rest of it is really up to you to take initiative, activate your industry, build the infrastructure, as fast as you can.”
He said that fears about the dangers of AI are overblown, noting that other new technologies and industries such as cars and aviation have been successfully regulated.
“There are some interests to scare people about this new technology, to mystify this technology, to encourage other people to not do anything about that technology and rely on them to do it. And I think that’s a mistake.”
Following a new round of US restrictions in October imposed on some of its AI chips, Nvidia said in November it was working with customers in China and the Middle East to obtain export licenses for new products that would comply with US rules.
The CEO did not address that issue on Monday.
Nvidia is due to report fourth-quarter earnings on Feb. 21.

Representative Image: iPad Air 2022
Apple is expected to revamp the
iPad line with new models in the Air, Pro, and mini series. While the Pro model is likely to feature the series first OLED display, the iPad Air is expected to go through a major revamp this year. From a bigger display to a new processor, here is everything new expected for the iPad Air 2024:
Larger display
Apple would likely retain the flat-edged design form factor of the iPad Air from 2020. However, the maximum screen size is expected to go up from 10.9-inch on the current generation to 12.9-inch on the upcoming model.
According to news reports, Apple would introduce the iPad Air 2024 in a 12.9-inch screen variant. If true, this will be the first time that the iPad Air will have options for display sizes. Much like the 10.9-inch iPad Air, the 12.9-inch variant would likely feature the LCD panel.
New chipset
Following the natural trajectory of upgradation, Apple would likely equip the upcoming iPad Air model with the M2 chipset, as the current generation features M1 chip. However, according to news reports, Apple may skip a generation on the Air’s and power the tablet with its latest M3 chip.

Redesigned camera bump
The next-generation iPad Air models are expected to get a raised camera bump at the rear. The new camera bump would likely incorporate the camera sensor and an LED flash in a vertically-oriented design. This would mark the first time that the iPad Air features a camera flash.
Other upgrades
Other notable features that are expected on the upcoming iPad Air includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support for connectivity. Apple would likely introduce new colour options for the iPad Air models as well.
