Manish Sisodia To Spend The Night At CBI Headquarters, Court Date Today

Manish Sisodia will be presented in a CBI court on Monday.

New Delhi:

Manish Sisodia, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, has been arrested by the CBI and will be presented in court on Monday. The Aam Aadmi Party leader was arrested Sunday evening in connection with alleged corruption in the implementation of a new liquor policy in Delhi.

Manish Sisodia will spend the night at the headquarters of the Central Bureau of Investigation in Delhi. He will undergo a medical checkup Monday morning before being presented in a CBI court.

Mr Sisodia and others face corruption allegations in bringing a new liquor sale policy in the national capital. The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing of the 2021 policy, for which kickbacks to the tune of ₹ 100 crore were paid by a liquor lobby it dubbed the “South Group”.

After his arrest, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart met Mr Sisodia’s family. Slamming the arrest, Mr Kejriwal warned that “people will respond”

“Manish is innocent. His arrest is dirty politics. There is a lot of anger among the people due to the Mr Sisodia’s arrest. Everyone is watching. People understand everything. People will respond to this. This will boost our spirit further. Our struggle will get stronger,” Mr Kejriwal tweeted.

Earlier Sunday, Mr Sisodia was questioned by the CBI for over eight hours.

Manish Sisodia’s CBI Date Today, AAP Leaders Allege House Arrest: 10 Facts

Manish Sisodia’s CBI Date Today, AAP Leaders Allege House Arrest: 10 Facts

Manish Sisodia has been called for questioning by the CBI today in the Delhi liquor policy case

New Delhi:
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia will go to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office today for questioning in the liquor policy case. Mr Sisodia is expected to reach the CBI’s headquarters in central Delhi’s Lodhi Road at 11 am.

Here’s your 10-point cheat sheet to this big story

  1. Mr Sisodia left his home just before 10 am, standing out of the sunroof of his car and leading a roadshow of AAP supporters who waved placards and shouted slogans. He visited Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial at Delhi’s Rajghat. AAP leaders have said they have been put under house arrest because the CBI will arrest Mr Sisodia.

  2. “Going to CBI again today, will cooperate fully in the entire investigation. The love of lakhs of children and the blessings of crores of countrymen are with us. I don’t care if I have to stay in jail for a few months. I am a follower of Bhagat Singh who was hanged for the country,” Mr Sisodia tweeted.

  3. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “God is with you Manish. The blessings of lakhs of children and their parents are with you. When you go to jail for the country and society, it is not a curse, it is a glory. I pray to God that you return from jail soon. Children, parents and all of us in Delhi will be waiting for you.”

  4. The CBI had previously called Mr Sisodia for questioning on February 19. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, who is also Delhi’s Finance Minister, however, sought a week’s time for making Delhi Budget. The CBI agreed to his request.

  5. Mr Sisodia and others face corruption allegations in bringing a new liquor sale policy in the national capital. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had ordered the CBI probe last year. The Delhi government reverted to the old liquor policy and blamed the Lieutenant Governor for loss of revenue worth crores of rupees.

  6. The BJP said the Delhi government went back to the old liquor sale policy to cover up corruption in the excise department held by Mr Sisodia. The CBI has named seven accused in the liquor policy case chargesheet, which has no mention of Mr Sisodia.

  7. The CBI has said it is focusing on the alleged influence of a “South Lobby” of businessmen and politicians making the Delhi liquor policy to swing in their favour using middlemen, traders and bureaucrats. Recently, the CBI arrested Butchibabu Gorantla, a former chartered accountant of K Kavitha, leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

  8. The AAP alleged the BJP at the centre was behind the Lieutenant Governor’s decision to send the CBI after Mr Sisodia. The liquor policy case soon found itself on top of the long list of friction points between the AAP and the Lieutenant Governor, and by extension the centre.

  9. The most recent example of the friction between the Lieutenant Governor and the AAP was when the Supreme Court agreed to the AAP’s request that members of Delhi’s civic body nominated by the Lieutenant Governor can’t vote in the mayor election.

  10. Even before the mayor election, back in November last year, Arvind Kejriwal had alleged that the centre, with the Lieutenant Governor working as a proxy, wanted to harm the AAP’s election campaign in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP had swept the polls.

Ram Charan’s latest update on Instagram needs all your attention. No, we aren’t talking about RRR  or the song Naatu Naatu. This time, it’s about a selfie. Ram Charan, who attended the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) awards with team RRR, said that he is looking forward to clicking a selfie with actress Angela Bassett. Expressing his gratitude to the HCA, Ram Charan wrote, “Honoured to be representing Indian Cinema at the Hollywood critics awards along with SS Rajamouli and MM Keeravani garu. I am proud of the recognition we received as team RRR tonight. Thank you for having me as a presenter & Angela Bassett,  I am looking forward to my selfie with you soon.” The actor has also shared a series of pictures from the awards night.

RRR won big at the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) awards. The SS Rajamouli film has won four awards, including the Best International Film, Best Action Film, Best Stunts, and Best Original Song for the Oscar-nominated Naatu Naatu. Rajamouli, who walked up to the stage to accept the Best Stunt award, in his speech said, “A big thank you to all the members of the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) who thought RRR had the best stunts. Thanks, alot. I must first thank my choreographer who has put in lots of effort to execute all the stunts. Juji [stunt master] helped them with some of the climax action sequences. And, to all the other choreographers who worked really hard and came to India and understood our vision. They changed their working style to suit our working style and delivered what we had today.”

For his “wonderful actors” Jr NTR and Ram Charan, SS Rajamouli added, “ “In the innumerable action shots in the whole film, there were hardly 2-3 shots where we used body doubles. The actors performed each and every stunt. They are wonderful guys.”

RRR’s official page has shared the video on Twitter. The note read, “Here’s  SS Rajamouli’s acceptance speech of #HCAcritics award for Best Stunts. Congratulations to our entire team.”

RRR, earlier this year, scripted history by winning the Best Original Song award at the Golden Globes. It also won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu at the Critics Choice Awards.

“BJP Councillors Attacked Me”: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi

“BJP Councillors Attacked Me”: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi

Violent clashes broke out between many councillors of the AAP and the BJP.

New Delhi:

Hours after the municipal House was rocked by fresh clashes between the councillors of the BJP and the AAP, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Friday alleged that a few members of the saffron party inflicted life-threatening attack on her.

At a press conference in Delhi, she alleged that her colleague Ashu Thakur was also attacked by another BJP councillor.

There was no immediate reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Shortly before the media interaction held at the Civic Centre, the mayor adjourned the House and announced that the election to six members of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be held afresh on February 27 at 11 am.

AAP MLA Atishi alleged Ms Thakur was held by her scarf and dragged from the dais to one of the exit gates of the House.

“We will go to the Kamla Market Police Station and lodge a case of life-threatening attack on Mayor Shelly Oberoi and our other women councillors,” Ms Atishi said.

Scenes of uproar and high-decibel protests by BJP councillors were witnessed in the House after Oberoi declared that one vote cast during the election to the standing committee of MCD on Friday, was “invalid”.

The bedlam in the House turned into a full-bown pandemonium and violent clashes broke out between many councillors of the AAP and the BJP.

Mayor Oberoi had barely started to announce the results when the ruckus began. One councillor even ripped off the mayor’s mike on the dais.

“When I was announcing the standing committee election result, they (BJP councillors) pushed my chair and attacked me. BJP councillors Ravi Negi, Arjun Marwah, Chandan Choudhary and others inflicted life-threatening attack on me,” she alleged.

She said ballot papers used on Friday have been “torn” and lost so as a moral responsibility, fresh election will be held for picking the six members of the MCD panel.

Ms Atishi alleged that what BJP members did on Friday was akin to “booth capturing”.

“The BJP must accept its defeat in the MCD polls. They should not try to use violence to get back door entry into (MCD) governance,” she said.

The mayor also alleged that the ruckus on Friday amounted to disrespect of the House and the chair of the mayor, and was “sheer hooliganism”.

Ashu Thakur, later talking to reporters, said her scarf was wrapped around her neck. “I was dragged by the scarf from the dais to an exit door, and if the cloth had tightened longer, it could have suffocated me to death,” she added.

Later, AAP supporters held a protest outside the Kamla Market Police Station.

India Abstains From UN General Assembly Vote On “Lasting Peace” In Ukraine

India Abstains From UN General Assembly Vote On “Lasting Peace” In Ukraine

The resolution called upon member states to redouble support for diplomatic efforts in Ukraine

United Nations:

India abstained in the UN General Assembly on Thursday on a resolution that underscored the need to reach as soon as possible a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine in line with the principles of the UN Charter.

The 193-member General Assembly adopted the draft resolution, put forward by Ukraine and its supporters, titled ‘Principles of the Charter of the United Nations underlying a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine’.

The resolution, which got 141 votes in favour and 7 against, “underscores the need to reach, as soon as possible, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” India was among the 32 countries that abstained.

The resolution called upon member states and international organisations to redouble support for diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, consistent with the Charter.

It reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, extending to its territorial waters and reiterated its demand that Russia immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, and calls for a cessation of hostilities.

In the year since Russia’s February 24, 2022 invasion of Ukraine, several UN resolutions – in the General Assembly, Security Council and Human Rights Council, have condemned the invasion and underlined the commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

India has abstained on the UN resolutions on Ukraine and consistently underlined the need to respect the UN Charter, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

New Delhi has also urged that all efforts be made for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an urgent return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.

Last September, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said in his address to the high-level UN General Assembly session that in this conflict, India is on the side of peace and dialogue and diplomacy.

“As the Ukraine conflict continues to rage, we are often asked whose side are we on. And our answer, each time, is straight and honest. India is on the side of peace and will remain firmly there. We are on the side that respects the UN Charter and its founding principles. We are on the side that calls for dialogue and diplomacy as the only way out,” Jaishankar had said, adding that it is in the collective interest to work constructively, both within the United Nations and outside, in finding an early resolution to this conflict.

India has also consistently underlined that in the conflict, the entire global South has suffered “substantial collateral damage” and developing countries are facing the brunt of the conflict’s consequences on food, fuel and fertiliser supplies.

Jaishankar has said that India is on the side of those that are “struggling to make ends meet, even as they stare at the escalating costs of food, of fuel and fertilisers.” The UNGA resolution called for an immediate cessation of the attacks on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine and any deliberate attacks on civilian objects, including those that are residences, schools and hospitals.

It urged all member states to cooperate in the spirit of solidarity to address the global impacts of the war on food security, energy, finance, the environment and nuclear security and safety and underscored that arrangements for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine should take into account these factors.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the emergency special session of the General Assembly that resumed on Wednesday that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is “an affront to our collective conscience” and said it is “high time” to step back from the brink.

“The one-year mark of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine stands as a grim milestone – for the people of Ukraine and for the international community. That invasion is an affront to our collective conscience. It is a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law,” Guterres said adding that the invasion is having dramatic humanitarian and human rights consequences.

In a strong message, Guterres said the war is fanning regional instability and fuelling global tensions and divisions while diverting attention and resources from other crises and pressing global issues. “Meanwhile, we have heard implicit threats to use nuclear weapons. The so-called tactical use of nuclear weapons is utterly unacceptable. It is high time to step back from the brink,” he said. PTI YAS RUP

Congress’s Pawan Khera Deplaned, Arrested, Party Goes To Supreme Court

Congress’s Pawan Khera Deplaned, Arrested, Party Goes To Supreme Court

Congress alleged an attempt to detain Pawan Khera at the Delhi airport and protested on the tarmac.

New Delhi:

Congress leader Pawan Khera was arrested at the Delhi airport today, after being taken off a flight to Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, over an alleged insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nearly 50 Congress leaders launched a rare protest on the tarmac, refusing to let the flight leave. The opposition party also approached the Supreme Court against the arrest.

Pawan Khera, a senior Congress spokesperson, was forced to exit the IndiGo flight after he boarded it as part of a Congress group heading to Raipur for a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Pawan Khera was arrested by the Assam Police, who arrived at the airport with an FIR or First Information Report. “It’s a long battle and I’m ready to fight,” he said as he was whisked away by the police.

Several Congress leaders got off the plane in protest, staging a sit-in on the Delhi airport tarmac.

IndiGo said in a statement: “A passenger was deplaned by the police at the Delhi airport from Raipur-bound flight 6E 204. Some other passengers have also decided to deboard on their own accord. We are following the advice of the concerned authorities. The flight is delayed as of now and we regret the inconvenience caused to other passengers.”

Mr Khera said he was first told that there was a problem with his baggage. “They told me you can’t fly. Then they said the DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) will meet you. I have been waiting for a long time,” he said.

Mr Khera was named in the FIR on the basis of a BJP leader’s complaint in Assam.

At a recent press conference, Mr Khera flubbed PM Modi’s name while demanding a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani-Hindenburg row. “If Narasimha Rao could form a JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee), if Atal Bihari Vajpayee could form a JPC, then what problem does Narendra Gautam Das…sorry Damodardas…Modi have?” he said, appearing to confirm the middle name with a colleague.

The BJP insists that Mr Khera’s fumble was deliberate.

“Make no mistake- pathetic remarks by courtier Pawan Khera on PM’s father have blessings of the top levels of Congress, which is full of entitlement and disdain against a person of humble origins being PM. India will not forget or forgive these horrible remarks of Congressmen,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said.

The Congress said the BJP is acting out of fear and wants to block the party’s plenary session because of the “successful Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi”. Last week, the Enforcement Directorate carried out searches on Congress MLAs in Chhattisgarh over allegations of money-laundering.

“This is nothing but a rattled government and its high-handedness,” Congress’s Supriya Srinate told NDTV.
