Excise policy case: Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia furnish security bond before Delhi court

Excise policy case: Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia furnish security bond before Delhi court

Former Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday furnished surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each before a court here following their discharge in the corruption case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders appeared before the Rouse Avenue Court and submitted the surety bonds in compliance with the order passed earlier while discharging them from the case investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

As per legal procedure, an accused who is discharged or acquitted in a criminal case is required to furnish a surety bond to ensure their presence before the court in case the prosecution files an appeal challenging the order.

In a detailed judgment running into more than 1,100 paragraphs, the Rouse Avenue Court, on February 27, had discharged all the accused, including Kejriwal and Sisodia, in connection with the alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy introduced by the then AAP-led Delhi government.

Meanwhile, the discharge order has been challenged before the Delhi High Court by the Central Bureau of Investigation through a criminal revision petition. Earlier this week, a single-judge Bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued notice to Kejriwal, Sisodia and other accused on the probe agency’s plea assailing the trial court’s order refusing to frame charges.

During the hearing, the Delhi High Court also stayed the trial court’s direction ordering departmental action against a CBI officer who had investigated the case and said the remarks made against the investigating agency and the officer would remain stayed.

The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy introduced by the then AAP-led Delhi government, which the probe agency claimed was designed to benefit certain private liquor entities in exchange for alleged bribes.

However, the trial court had rejected the CBI’s theory of an overarching conspiracy, holding that the contemporaneous record indicated that the policy was the result of a consultative and deliberative process undertaken in accordance with prescribed procedure.

In a related development, Kejriwal has submitted a representation to Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya seeking the transfer of the CBI’s revision petition from the Bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma to another Bench of the Delhi High Court.

The representation urged the Chief Justice, who is the master of the roster, to reassign the matter to a different Bench.

Fake hospital sealed in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar after complaint of doctor’s name misuse

Fake hospital sealed in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar after complaint of doctor’s name misuse

The health department in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district has sealed a private hospital in Choumahla town after receiving a complaint that it was being operated illegally using the name of a fake doctor. The action was taken on the instructions of Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Sajid Khan.

The hospital, located on Kundla Road, was running under the name Maa Pitambara Multi Speciality Hospital. According to officials, the hospital was allegedly operating without proper authorisation and was falsely using the name of a doctor.

Block Medical Officer Rajkumar Baghela said that the complaint was filed by a doctor who claimed that the hospital was being run in his name without his permission. The doctor informed the health department that he had no connection with the hospital, yet his name was being used to promote and operate the facility.

After receiving the complaint, CMHO Sajid Khan ordered an investigation and directed a team from the health department to take action.

When the health department and administrative team reached the hospital for inspection, the operator of the hospital and several staff members reportedly fled from the spot. However, a nursing staff member named Amit was present at the facility when the team arrived.

During the inspection, officials found several medical instruments, medicines, and an OPD register inside the hospital. The team seized these items as part of the investigation and sealed the hospital premises.

Officials also said that the hospital was claiming to treat serious diseases such as cancer, brain tumors, and paralysis, which raised serious concerns about the authenticity of the services being offered there. The health department has prepared a report on the entire incident and will submit it to the CMHO. Further action will be taken after reviewing the report.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing to determine who was responsible for operating the hospital illegally and whether more people were involved in the case.

Amit Shah must come to Punjab with answers, not ‘jumlas’: AAP’s Aman Arora

Amit Shah must come to Punjab with answers, not ‘jumlas’: AAP’s Aman Arora

CHANDIGARH: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora on Thursday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah must come to Punjab with answers, not “jumlas”, as he raised six crucial questions related to Punjab’s economy, farmers, flood relief, industry and the ongoing fight against drugs ahead of Shah’s March 14 visit to the state.

The AAP Punjab State President said the people of Punjab expect clarity from the Union Government on long-pending financial dues, compensation for massive GST losses, delayed flood relief, threats posed by the proposed India–US trade agreement to farmers and traders, the Centre’s role in tackling drug smuggling along the border, and whether a special industrial package will be provided to revive Punjab’s economy.

Addressing a press release at Punjab Bhavan on Thursday, AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora on Thursday said that as the 2027 Assembly elections draw closer, leaders of various political parties have begun visiting Punjab and trying to mislead the people of the state for their political gains. “Although every political party and leader has the right to visit Punjab and they are always welcome here, the people of Punjab are fully aware of the intentions behind such visits,” he added.

Referring to the recent visit of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Aman Arora stated, “Recently Rahul Gandhi also visited Punjab. His agenda was about MGNREGA, but how much he actually spoke about the concerns of poor labourers is clear to everyone.”

Aman Arora also referred to the upcoming visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Punjab on March 14 and said, “Just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and the entire BJP have misled the people of the country with slogans and ‘jumlas’ in the past, there is a possibility that similar ‘jumlas’ may be heard again during this visit. However, I hope that Amit Shah will show some seriousness and goodwill towards Punjab and speak about something that is genuinely in the interest of the state.”

The AAP Punjab President said that as the state president of the AAP and a cabinet minister, he would like to ask six important questions on behalf of the three crore people of Punjab during Amit Shah’s visit. He said these questions are related to Punjab’s economy, development and the effort to make Punjab prosperous and vibrant again.

Highlighting the issue of pending funds, Aman Arora said, “Punjab’s farmers work day and night and grow crops with their hard-earned sweat and blood before bringing them to the mandis. The central government has withheld ?8,300 crore of the Rural Development Fund (RDF) and Market Development Fund (MDF) from Punjab for nearly four years. This money was meant to be spent on rural infrastructure, rural development, and the construction of roads and mandis. I hope that during the March 14 rally Amit Shah will announce that the central government will immediately release these ?8,300 crore to Punjab.”

Raising the issue of GST compensation, the AAP Punjab State President stated, “When the central government introduced the GST regime in 2017, Punjab, which is the food bowl of the country, was given GST compensation for five years, but that too was discontinued in 2022. As a result, Punjab has suffered a loss of approximately ?55,000 to ?60,000 crore. If the central government has taken any decision to compensate for this loss, it should inform the people of Punjab. If not, at least promise that before stepping into the 2027 election battle, the loss faced by Punjab will be compensated.”

Referring to the devastating floods last year, Aman Arora stated, “Punjab faced some of the worst floods in its history last year. PM Modi visited the state, conducted an aerial survey and himself announced ?1,600 crore as relief. It is unfortunate that not even ?16 out of those ?1,600 crore has reached Punjab so far. Before coming to Punjab, Amit Shah should ensure that this ?1,600 crore is released, or at least announce when the funds will be provided. Since the money has not yet been released, the people of Punjab deserve a clear explanation.”

Speaking about the concerns of farmers, Aman Arora stated, “Earlier the central government attempted to destroy Punjab’s agriculture through the three black farm laws, but the farmers of Punjab and the people of the state presented strong resistance and forced the government to withdraw them. Now the same attempt is being made in a refined form through the so-called India–US trade agreement. Through this deal the central government is bowing before the United States and accepting conditions that will cause serious harm to farmers across the country, small traders and especially the farmers of Punjab. The BJP leaders, the party and the Government of India must explain what interests or compulsions lie behind this one-sided deal.”

Addressing the issue of drugs, Aman Arora asserted, “Punjab has been fighting a war against drugs for the past year, but this battle cannot be won by Punjab alone. On one side there is a 543-kilometre international border, and on the other side there are neighbouring states ruled by the BJP, whether it is Rajasthan or Haryana. Along with this, it has been seen many times that drugs enter Punjab through ports in Gujarat. The central government and the BJP must explain how they are contributing or planning to contribute to this war being fought by the Punjab Government and three crore Punjabis. Punjab will be waiting to hear the answer.”

Raising the issue of industry, Aman Arora said, “For a long time neighbouring hill states such as Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand were given industrial incentives for nearly two decades, which caused heavy losses to Punjab’s industry. At the same time, with the international border remaining closed, trade with other countries has also been affected. The central government must clarify whether it plans to provide any special package to protect Punjab’s industries and traders under these circumstances.”

Concluding, Aman Arora said, “Amit Shah is welcome in Punjab, but he must answer these questions before leaving. He should not return after merely making speeches, offering false promises or indulging in rhetoric. Punjab’s wounds are already fresh on many issues. Sometimes the matter of Chandigarh arises, sometimes the issue of Punjab’s waters, and the BJP and the central government have repeatedly aggravated these concerns. The wounds are already very fresh, and they should not be reopened further. Instead, they should be healed.”

He urged people to spread only correct and verified information and expressed confidence that the country will navigate every situation successfully. “Today, I’d like to speak to the people of Tamil Nadu about the conflict in West Asia. It has affected the whole world’s energy supply chain. We believe in the ideology of India First,” he said.

“In any situation, we have seen how our government always puts the interests of Indians above everything. Even in these times, our approach will be the same. The Prime Minister also referred to the government’s handling of COVID-19 pandemic and said 100 crore Indians “showed the world how mature our nation is”. “I am confident that as a nation, we will navigate every situation successfully,” he said.

Earlier, addressing a rally in Ernakulum in Kerala, PM Modi said that the new India doesn’t leave their people in trouble and has always used all its strength to protect them. “It’s natural for all of you to be concerned about what’s happening in West Asia today. Millions of our brothers and sisters work there. But you must remember that the BJP-NDA government is in power today. Whenever any of our countrymen has been in trouble, we have used all our strength to protect them. Today’s India doesn’t leave its people in trouble. We are providing security all facilities to Indians stuck in the war,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to the Gulf countries for ensuring the safety of Indians. “I am satisfied that our friendly countries in the Gulf are taking care of our citizens. Our embassies and missions are 24/7 helping them. They are offering food, residents, protections to them,” he said.

Targeting the Congress over their criticism of the Government’s handling of the West Asia Conflict, PM Modi accused them of “willingly giving provocative statements” to endanger the safety of Indians. “It is unfortunate that the Congress party is looking for politics at this time of global crisis. Congress is willingly making provocative statements to cause disruptions. Our people get stuck there so they can abuse Modi. This is thier play,” he said.

“It is unfortunate that the Congress party is looking for politics at this time of global crisis. Congress is willingly making provocative statements to cause disruptions. Our people get stuck there, so they can abuse Modi. This is thier play,” he added. PM Modi also urged people to break the pattern of electing UDF and LDF governments for Keralam’s development.

“You have given Congress and the Left more than 70 years. Now give a chance so that the BJP-NDA serves you. You will see a great glimpse of Viksit Keralam,” he said. In his speech in Tiruchirappalli, PM Modi attacked the DMK government and accused it of pursuing a “scientific corruption model”.

“In 2021, the people of Tamil Nadu brought DMK to power. Instead of taking it as a responsibility, they have betrayed the mandate. In DMK, everything starts and ends with one family. Ministers may change, MLAs may change, but power remains with one dynasty. DMK is infamous for its scientific corruption model. Today, the same model is being used to make Tamil Nadu an ATM for one family. A Minister from this very district is involved in a huge cash-for-jobs scam,” he said.

Earlier, PM Modi unveiled multiple development projects worth around Rs 5,650 crore in Tiruchirappalli.
